Help-HP Pavilion All in 1 (Windows 8.1) gets stuck on start up

Help,
I am not a real techy person and am frustrated and read to get rid of this new HP.  I will do my best to outline the issues occuring.
Computer is new less than a month.  Came with 8.1 out of the box.  Did initial set up and then it did its thing applying updates.  In first few days in, when updates would occur and it had to restart it would get stuck and the HP logo would appear and be froze with no spinning wheel icon.  It then appeared to open a PC Check Up at which point we ended up running and that wiped out any Apps, we put on it, and documentes like Word documents that we transferred over and had saved from old computer and some programs that we put on like Office etc.    Starting over wife reset it all up, with items we needed and had it do the updates individually instead of all.
It seems to have worked better for past 2 week but when just turning on with power button it is a gamble, sometimes it starts fine, other times stuck on HP screen.  It seems to get stuck after updates were applied, like the day prior.
Wife is for "techy" in this arena and has gotten past the lock up issue, sometimes a hard restart and it will work.  Today though was completely stuck again, unusable machine and it ran another PC Check Up and did a System Refresh.  It never presents an option to choose a past date to refresh too and so this time we at least saved our documents BUT lost all apps and programs we use.  I was at least able to get back on the machine after it ran its process.
Please Help.  I use this machine for work and need to rely on it, but every day the stress of "wondering" if it will start up or not is wearing on me.
I have read forums where it sounds like a common issue, but the suggested solutions vary greatly and to me this is a brand new machine that should not be causing me this headache!  I read about the "Hybrid Reboot as possible cause" "Doing things in your BIOS and disabling blah blah" "One where they saind HP has a fix but you need to apply the most recent update"     I fear any update at this point at those tedn to make this machine not work when starting up and tired of doing system refresh and losing things to start all over again.
I had a DELL  for years, that over time did become slow, BUT it did always start up without an isssue and I never stressed whether it would be usable on a daily basis.
HELP, Suggestions please.
Also, is there a way to pick a past date to restore to?  Been unable to find that option like I did on past computers.

Hi again Al259,
Thank you for the quick reply!
If you are not able to successfully restore to a previous working point on your desktop, I recommend performing a backup and recovery of your operating system. This can be done by following the steps in this resource on Backing Up Your Files (Windows 8), as well as Performing an HP system recovery (Windows 8). This should return your system back to factory defaults.
If the issue persists, please call our technical support at 800-474-6836 for your in-warranty replacement options. If you live outside the US/Canada Region, please click the link below to get the support number for your region.

  • Cannot install Windows 7 Pro; gets stuck on "Starting Windows" screen

I have read dozens of posts on this topic but none has helped yet.
My system has Windows 8 with UEFI. I want to install Windows 7 Pro on another partition. I have turned off Secure Boot in the UEFI/BIOS. When I try to install Windows 7 Pro from a DVD it shows "windows is loading files" and then gets stuck on "Starting Windows"
for ever. This happens even when no USB peripherals are attached.
I have already wasted many days on this. I hope someone can help.
    Thanks!

    Hi friends of the internet
I have been reading several forums regarding the issue of installing windows 7 (64 bit) to a computer that have had windows 8 installed previously or just a GPT formatted disk.
    My Case:
Windows version installed: Windows 7 Professional N with Service Pack 1 (x64) or Windows 7 Professional (x64)
    Computer used: Samsung laptop
    Model Code: NP53U4C-A02SE
    See the specks here:
    http://www.samsung.com/dk/consumer/computer-peripherals/notebook/notebook/NP535U4C-A02SE-spec
Create a USB install disk that not freezes at ”starting windows” screen:
First I followed this great guide (Thanks Daniel):
    http://
    hodgin.ca/2012/10/02/creating-a-uefibios-windows-7-usb-and-installing-to-gpt-partitions/
    STOP AFTER STEP 13!
    1. Open a command line in administrator mode
    2. run DISKPART
    3. type LIST DISK
    4. Look for the disk number that represents your USB drive
    5. type SELECT DISK # where # represents the number of your USB drive. Get this right or you will wipe a different drive out.
    6. type CLEAN
    7. type CREATE PARTITION PRIMARY
    8. type SELECT PARTITION 1
    9. type ACTIVE
    10. type FORMAT fs=fat32 quick
    11. type assign
    12. The drive should now be formatted and marked as active and fat32. Do not format the drive as NTFS or you will only be able to boot into the installer in BIOS mode.
    13. Now you will need to copy the contents of the windows 7 install dvd to the USB with a regular copy paste from windows explorer.
Here comes a very weird hack... I do not know why it works, but I think it is all about flash drive data structure. I did these steps on a win 7 prof. computer.
    (Let’s assume it’s drive E:)
Make a copy of your e:\efi\microsoft folder to e.g. your desktop.
    Delete the e:\efi folder
Copy the \efi folder from a windows 8 installation disk (I used Windows 8 (x64) Professional) to the e:\efi folder. Sorry I cannot provide this for you.
Here comes the weird part. Then delete e:\efi\microsoft you just copied from the win 8 installation disk.
Copy the \microsoft folder form the desktop to e:\efi\microsoft
Resume the guide from step 18.:
    http://
    hodgin.ca/2012/10/02/creating-a-uefibios-windows-7-usb-and-installing-to-gpt-partitions/
    18. Insert the USB in the machine and turn it on and boot into the UEFI/BIOS loader and check for boot options. On the ASUS Zenbook it detected two boot options on the USB drive. One was UEFI and one was regular BIOS. I made the
UEFI option the first choice and restarted the machine.
    My bios setup was:
    Secure Boot = Disable
OS Mode Selection = CSM and UEFI OS
Boot Device Priority = I made the UEFI option the first choice and restarted the machine.
    The installation should start normal.
    E.g. See this guide:
    www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/186875-uefi-unified-extensible-firmware-interface-install-windows-7-a.html
    What I did was:
    Select custom installation (Advanced).
    Click Drive options (Advanced).
Delete all partitions (this might not be needed). When I did not delete all partitions I was asked every time after the install, during start up by the windows boot manager to select ether win 8 or win 7.
Click new (DO NOT make Changes in the size of the disk), apply, see NOTE!
Edit the Primary partition as you want it e.g. divide it to more partitions.
Select the one you will install windows on and do a normal install.
I do not make changes in the Bios after install. The Boot priority is automatic set to “Windows boot manager”. If I change the boot mode back to OS Mode Selection = UEFI OS, the computer will freeze at the “starting windows” screen again.
All this worked for me, good luck. There might be more to it, but this is a start.
By the way, the start up time for a MBT install was 37 s. And for the GPT it was 49 s.
Remember if we stand on each other’s shoulders we will reach higher
    J.
NOTE: Here the installation program should create three partitions automatically!
Partition 1 - System - The EFI System partition that contains the NTLDR, HAL, Boot.txt, and other files that are needed to boot the system, such as drivers.
Partition 2 - MSR - The Microsoft Reserved (MSR) partition that reserves space on each disk drive for subsequent use by operating system software.
Partition 3 - Primary - Where Windows is to be installed to.
If this isn’t the cast you are not installing in UEIF mode. To check for this (thanks again Daniel):
If you need to find out if you have booted into BIOS mode or UEFI mode when the installer starts you can press SHIFT+F10 when the welcome installer shows up to open a cmd prompt. from here you will likely be at X:\Sources. Type cd .. to
go back a dir and move into \Windows\Panther\
    Then type notepad setupact.log
Within this file do a ctrl+f and search for
        Callback_BootEnvironmentDetect: Detected boot environment:
It should either say BIOS or UEFI.
To check if your disk is in the GPT format.
    Open the command prompt.
    Type: DISKPART
    Type: List Disk
See for the star (*) in the GPT column

  • HT1449 Help! This all runs quite smoothly until i get to 'consolidate library'. Then, tracks start copying, then stop followed by a pop up saying 'Copying files failed. The disc could not be read from or written to.'  Any suggestions? Thank you!

Help! This all runs quite smoothly until I get to 'consolidate library'. Then, tracks start copying, then stop followed by a pop up saying 'Copying files failed. The disc could not be read from or written to.'  Any suggestions? Thank you!

I had similar problems, it was a nightmare and on a 3 month ipod too!. I use a Powerbook G4 at home and a G5 at work - both were returning the same problems. so I sent it off to apple, they quickly sent it back saying there was nothing wrong with and it didn't need to be repaired. I tried it again and the same problems occurred "disc cannot be written to or read from." I could copy 20 songs onto it at the very most. A couple of guys at my work suggested updating it on a PC, then adding tunes via my mac as normal - guess what!? it works a treat!?. How ridiculous is that!? an Apple product works best on a PC. these generations of ipods are obviously designed to work best on Intel based Macs. What is wrong Apple? are you abandoning the G-generation!? still, atleast my ipod works for now - it will prove a problem when I have to update the iPod's software since I don't own a PC or an intel-based Mac.

    Hi,
According to your description, it seems that your all Windows 8.1 computers connect to network via normal wireless network.
Did you have wireless router for them?
Please delete this adhoc, then check if these computer could connect to network.

  • Firefox won't start. Everytime I end the process/close the last window, it keeps getting stuck at about 2500k memory in the task manager. (continued)

Firefox won't start. Everytime I end the process/close the last window, it keeps getting stuck at about 2500k memory in the task manager. The only way I have to fix it is to change some kind of compability settings or try and access it in a new way, and every time it crashes/closed/computer blue screens that setting will no longer work.
That is a short term solution, but eventually I'll run out of ways to access firefox successfully. I've tried many solutions, and some worked, but only once. I have yet to find a permanent solution for this problem.

First please update your plugins to make sure you are up to date. Shockwave Flash player has a newer version 16. In order to better manage the memory that Firefox uses please see these troubleshooting steps: [https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/firefox-uses-too-much-memory-ram Firefox Uses too much RAM]
You also mentioned that Firefox crashes, we're sorry to hear that Firefox is crashing. In order to assist you better, please follow the steps below to provide us crash IDs to help us learn more about your crash.
#Enter ''about:crashes'' in the Firefox address bar and press Enter. A Submitted Crash Reports list will appear, similar to the one shown below.
#Copy the '''5''' most recent Report IDs that start with '''bp-''' and then go back to your forum question and paste those IDs into the "Post a Reply" box.
''' Note:''' If a recent Report ID does not start with '''bp-''' click on it and select '''Submit'''.
(Please don't take a screenshot of your crashes, just copy and paste the IDs. The below image is just an example of what your Firefox screen should look like.)

  • Firefox 3.6.5, running Windows 7, always gets stuck at the 80% when trying to install initially.

I've been a long time user of Mozilla Firefox, and have recently upgraded computers, which gave me Windows 7 Home Premium. For the past couple of days I have been trying to install Firefox 3.6.5 but it always gets stuck when its 80% done. Is there something I could do to stop that, or do I need to use a different version of Firefox, and if so, where can I download one?

Do a clean (re)install and download a fresh Firefox copy from http://www.mozilla.com/firefox/all.html and save the file to the desktop.
Uninstall your current Firefox version and remove the Firefox program folder before installing that copy of the Firefox installer.
It is important to delete the Firefox program folder to remove all the files and make sure that there are no problems with files that were leftover after uninstalling.
You can skip the step to create a new profile, that is not necessary for this issue.

  • Unable to install iTunes on windows 8 keeps getting stuck at 98%

When trying to install iTunes to my new laptop the status bar gets stuck at 98% and nothing happens.

See Troubleshooting issues with iTunes for Windows updates.
If you still have problems installing iTunes download and install 7-Zip (free) and a fresh copy of the current installer from https://www.apple.com/itunes/download/ or use these direct links (which will go out of date at some point):
    iTunes 11.1.5 for Windows (32-bit) - iTunesSetup.exe (2014-02-25)
    iTunes 11.1.5 for Windows (64-bit) - iTunes64Setup.exe (2014-02-25)
Then unpack the installer into its components using 7-Zip and install them individually in alphabetical order (don't try to install SetupAdmin.exe or iCloud.msi). If any of the components still fail to install you may get more useful error messages as to why not.

  • Mounting Windows shared disk - getting stuck; won't eject?

I'm sharing the C: on my windows 2000 server machine, on the network. Most of the time I can mount and eject the volume just fine.
However, sometimes it gets "stuck". Meaning, I can mount it once, then eject it, but when I try to mount it again, i get the ?-mark over the drive. I go to relaunch Finder, and the volume is still there, but it won't eject. I can browse it still, but every action I try seems to not cause it to eject. I have to reboot to get it to clear off.
Is there a way to force a volume to eject? Am I mounting my drive wrong in the first place? Is there a proper way to eject a volume? Thanks.

  • My macbook gets stuck while starting, please help

I bought a new macbook pro last januari and it was working very wel. I had no problems at all.
The last days i kept it on or let it hybernate, but i didn't really shut it down for some time. Today it seemed slow, so I decided to restart.
I turned it off correctly, but when i tried to turn it on it doesnt get any further then the gray screen with apple logo and turning waiting sign. I waited almost 15 minutes, but no change.
I tried restarting a couple more times but every time the same result. So I get the startup sound and logo, but then it seems to get stuck.
Is there anyone who can give me any advise on what to do now?
    Thanks so much!!!
    Suus
p.s. I have a mac OS X, but not sure which version...

That's called the Gray Screen issue and it's cause is most likely a third party kext file that loads at boot time, or it could be a corrupted drive or OS X.
I've written a tutorial here to how to go about fixing it

  • My HP Pavilion All-in-One shuts down during certain computer games. Any ideas why?

My HP Pavilion All-in-One is a year old, and has started shutting down on certain PC games and on one online game, Wizards 101. Can anyone tell me why or what I can do to prevent this? The games were not from original disks, don't know if that has anything to do with it or not. We have uninstalled them, but may buy originals if this would make any difference. Thanks

    Linda, welcome to the forum.
It sounds like a heat problem to me.  Most laptops and All-in-ones are frankly not meant for gaming.  Also, you could try installing any patches that are available for the games.  This could be part of the problem if not the heat.

  • Stuck at "Starting Windows" after Deployment

Hello. I recently updated my MDT to 2013 as well as added the Windows assessment and deployment kit for Windows 8.1. Since then, I have one particular .wim image that I can't seem to deploy using MDT. It continuously gets stuck at "Starting Windows"
