HELP I am missing 340 gig's!! "hard drive help needed"

ok so i had a 160gig hardrive in my macbook pro. i bought a new 500gig for it. i used Drive Genius 2 to copy the old hard drive to the new one. when i installed the new one everything works great except it only see's the 160 gig not 500? so my question is how can i make my computer recognize the whole hard drive?
thanks for any and all help!!

Start over by first prepping your new drive as follows:
Extended Hard Drive Preparation
1. Boot from your OS X Installer Disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from theUtilities menu.
2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Note the SMART status of the drive in DU's status area. If it does not say "Verified" then the drive is failing or has failed and will need replacing. SMART info will not be reported on external drives. Otherwise, click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID (for Intel Macs) or APM (for PPC Macs) then click on the OK button. Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed.
4. Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
5. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.
6. Click on the Erase button. The format process can take up to several hours depending upon the drive size.
Connect your old drive that you have installed in an external enclosure and boot from it by restarting the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION button until the boot manager screen appears. Select the icon for the external drive and click on the downward pointing arrow button. Now clone back to your new drive:
Clone using Restore Option of Disk Utility
1. Open Disk Utility from the Utilities folder.
2. Select the destination volume from the left side list.
3. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (journaled, if available) and click on the Erase button. This step can be skipped if the destination has already been freshly erased.
4. Click on the Restore tab in the DU main window.
5. Select the destination volume from the left side list and drag it to the Destination entry field.
6. Select the source volume from the left side list and drag it to the Source entry field.
7. Double-check you got it right, then click on the Restore button.
Destination means the internal drive.
Source means the external startup drive.

  • Install new hard drive HELP !!!

Hello, I just install a new 500gb hard drive into my uni mb replacing my 160gb. I have nothing really important to save from my previous hard drive. I am starting from scratch. After installing the new hard drive and inserting the disc 1 and press 'c'. Follow the screen instruction but only get to step 3 where screen ask ' SELECT A DESTINATION'. I have waited for 30 mins and all i see was the same screen. I am unable to click on options and continue cos they were greyed out. The only button that is nor grey is the 'go back'.
I am eagerly trying to get this new hard drive installed. What should i do next. Have tried the restart and all i am able to continue is until the Select a destination page.
Hope to get a good advice from here and .......
Thanking you in advance for all help and assistance.

Finally get the new hard drive installed from sratched. Once again many thanks to ypw. Once i clear the 'select a destination' step, the rest comes easy even for a novice like me.
Just for those who are curious to know the model of the hard drive that I installed. It is Hitachi 5K500 B-500. Choose this over the more popular WD Scorpion blue that most people are using.

  • FreeAgent GoFlex 500 Gig external hard drive not allowing me to write to it

I had to get a pc for work (trust me i hate it too but i wasn't given much choice unless i wanted to pay for a macbook out of pocket then buy windows) but anyways, when I got the computer it came with a 500 gig external hard drive which says its formatted for "Windows NT File System (NTFS)" and its permissions are read only. I went into disk utility and it didn't give me the option to change the permission. I want to use this hard drive to transfer information from my imac (i .e. music, movies, pictures, documents etc...) and then after that use it as a go between storage device. One I can use to back up both computers, if thats possible.
The drive is fresh out of the box and only has its stock preloaded programs on it, all I've done so far is plug it in to start transferring my entertainment stuff so business trips are more bearable.

Check the format on the EHD, my guess is it's formatted as NTFS. This format by default allows OS X to read but not write to it, therefore it's operating correctly right now. However you can easily fix the "write problem" by downloading and installing NTFS-3G. Here is a link to that download:

I had to replace my hard drive. Need to re-install office and pages and cannot find the cds. Any help will be appreciated

Replacement System Discs can be obtained from Apple's Customer Support - US (800) 767-2775 for a nominal fee. You'll need to have the model and serial number of your Mac available.
If you're not in the US, you may need to go through the regional Apple Store that serves your location to find the contact number - http://store.apple.com/Catalog/US/Images/intlstoreroutingpage.html
Or you can purchase the applications from an Apple retail outlet, App Store or the Apple online store.

    Hi prkrgrp,
I'm sorry, I'm a bit unclear on the exact nature of your question. If you are having issues starting up from your original Install Disk and running Disk Utility to repair your hard drive, you may find the information and steps outlined in the following articles helpful:

  • Trying to upload "actions" to photoshop elements 10 but I am having troubles because things are not on my hard drive that need to be there??

I am trying to upload "actions" to photoshop elements 10 but I am having troubles!  I watched the YouTube tutorial but seem to be missing "Adobe" in my Hard Drive!  Help me I am stuck....

I just loaded my actions using the PSE 10 from the App Store.
    Close PSE.
Access the System library location from Finder menu, click "Go" in the menu bar then select "Go to Folder...". Type in  "~/Library" and click Go.
The systems Library will open up and then you take this path:
Application Support > Adobe > Adobe Photoshop Elements 10 Editor > Presets > Actions (The Actions folder is where you move your actions file to)
Then go to the Photo Creations Folder > Locales > en_US and delete the MediaDatabase.db3 file (move it to the trash)
The next time you launch PSE your Actions DB will be rebuilt with the new actions installed.

    Either of these should help.
    http://grandperspectiv.sourceforge.net/
    http://www.whatsizemac.com/
Or search 'disk size' in the App Store.
Be carefull with what you delete & have a backup BEFORE you start, you may also want to reboot to try to free any memory that may have been written to disk.

  • Does an external hard drive ALWAYS need to be connected to my mbp with retina display for Time Machine?

Does an external hard drive ALWAYS need to be connected to my mbp (OS 10.10.1) with retina display for Time Machine? Or can it be connected once a week or whenever I want? I used to have an external drive always connected to my previous mbp, but it made moving my mbp around a bit of a hassle with it connected...

When the backup drive is not connected, some of the free space on the internal drive will be used to make local snapshots, which are backup copies of recently deleted files. Local snapshots will protect you from unintended file deletions, but not from a drive failure. You should only go as long between backups as you're willing to lose data. If losing a week's worth of work is acceptable to you, then that backup frequency is OK. Otherwise, it isn't.

  • I am looking to back up my MAC, and I need to know how big of an external hard drive I need

I am looking to back up my MAC, and I need to know how big of an external hard drive I need. How do I determine this?

Well, they recommend at least 2 - 3 times the size of your hard drive if you are using Time Machine because that keeps making backups until it runs out of space (and then deletes the oldest to make room for the newest).
However, if you prefer to have a bootable clone as a backup, you need about the same size as your hard drive since it is a perfect copy of your system (unless you want to partition and keep an older clone separately).
So, check to see how large your hard drive is and go from there.

I have a Western Digital external hard drive that needs to be re formatted for use on my iMac, but I do not want to lose existing data, is this possible ?

Formatting a disk always erases all the data on it. Your only option is to back it up elsewhere and restore it once formatted.

To reinstall the original OSX in your rMBP, boot the MBP using the COMMAND-OPTION-R keys.  The display should show a picture if the planet earth and you will be connected to the Apple servers.   Make certain that you have a solid Internet connection and follow the instructions.

What version of PS?  If it's CC, just reinstall the CC application manager then PS and sign in.  For an earlier version you will need to call Abobe to have you S/N reset.

How do I find out what size exterior hard drive I need to back up my system?

Click on the Apple icon on menu bar and select About this Mac.  Click on the Storage button.  Look at how much space your hard drive is currently consuming take that number and at least double it.  This would be your minimum space for your hard drive back up.  Or for a simpler answer, if your hard drive is 1TB in size, get a 2TB external hard drive for backups.
