Help I broke firefox

I started up my computer (Windows XP) and went to open Firefox. I got the message prompting me to choose between Safe Mode or restarting Firefox entirely. I picked the second one and it started backing up my data. After a minute I figured it was stuck, so like the impatient little dork I am I closed the back-up. When I went to start up Firefox I got an error message that reads: "Profile Missing: Your Firefox profile cannot be loaded. It may be missing or inaccesable." Clicking "Okay" leads to... nothing. Trying to start up Firefox after that just gives me the error message and then still nothing. I restarted and the problem persisted. I uninstalled Firefox and reinstalled it and the problem's still here. I'm using the most recent version of Firefox. Please help, I'm stuck with an old version of IE.

Cor-el: That first link helped me fix the problem, thanks so much!
oh my lovely bookmarks how I missed you

  • I'm suddenly in need of help with my Firefox browser (6.0.2)

    Hi there,
I'm suddenly in need of help with my Firefox browser (6.0.2)
    (OS: I use Windows XP).
When I open up the browser, all I see is a completely blank white screen, with all the toolbars at the top.
I know that my physical connections are fine: I've tested the modem, turned the pc off and on etc. and I can also receive/send emails.
This problem started today, 8th September, 2011 and has never happened before.
Is it a coincidence that Firefox updated itself just before I logged off yesterday evening? Could it be something to do with this particular new update?
I've also noted that just before I "open up" Firefox, I now get a small box saying:
    [JAVASCRIPT APPLICATION]
Exc In Ev handl: TypeError: This oRoot.enable is not a function
This has never appeared before - I hope it offers a clue a to what is wrong.
The Browser is not stuck in Safe Mode, by the way.
Obviously, I can't search for any solutions to the problem on the internet, as I can't physically see any websites!
(A friend is sending this query on my behalf from their pc)
Any light you could throw on this confusing problem would be much appreciated. I'd rather not have to uninstall and reinstall Firefox if possible.
If the only option is to uninstall Firefox and reinstall it from your site, then I'm also in trouble (I can't see the internet or make any downloads).
In that case, would you be able to send the .exe file as an attachment to my email address? If so, please let me know and I'll give you further details.
    Many thanks in advance.

A possible cause is security software (firewall) that blocks or restricts Firefox or the plugin-container process without informing you, possibly after detecting changes (update) to the Firefox program.
Remove all rules for Firefox from the permissions list in the firewall and let your firewall ask again for permission to get full unrestricted access to internet for Firefox and the plugin-container process and the updater process.

You can add a solid color theme to change the color of the top of the browser window, which includes the Menu Bar.

First you need to update to Firefox 17.0.1, as the version you are running is out of date.
Then, follow cor-el's instructions above, and if that doesn't resolve the issue, please read [[How to fix preferences that won't save]]

  • Can you help me with Firefox v7.0.1?

Since your latest version of Firefox came out, it has been working like a charm. My problems started on Oct. 23, 2011 when I found I could not delete my e-mails, close tabs or serf the web. I can use my bookmarks and get in and out of Firefox but that's about all. I am now using IE because I cannot fix this problem. I love Firefox and there is no way I'm going to switch to Google Chrome (too many bugs). I hope you can help me

Pre-IE9 browsers do not support CSS Media Queries.  Your page looks OK to me in IE9 standards mode.  However, Compatibility mode is essentially IE7 so that will look very bad.
Add this meta tag under your <title>.  It forces IE into standards mode with the highest engine available on the user's computer.
    <meta http-equiv="X-UA-Compatible" content="IE=edge">
That said, if you must support legacy browsers (pre-IE9), then you'll need to create an IE only style sheet without any media queries in it.  Then wrap your link to IE-only.css inside a conditional comment just above your closing </head> tag.
    <!--[if lt IE 9]>
    <link rel="stylesheet" type="text/css" href="IE-only.css">
    <![endif]-->
    </head>

  • I need help. My Firefox will not stop doing this even after i reinstalled. I will shut down firefox and when I open it back up it shows the previous website.

Please Help. This is starting to anger me. I Reinstalled and everything.

You should update your outdated Firefox 13.0.1 version to the current Firefox 17.0.1 release.
I'm not sure what you mean.
Do you mean that Firefox always opens the web pages that were open when you closed Firefox even if you set to open with the home page or a blank page?
Make sure that Firefox closes properly and that there isn't a hanging Firefox or plugin-container process left in the task manager.
    *"Hang at exit": http://kb.mozillazine.org/Firefox_hangs
*"Firefox hangs when you quit it": https://support.mozilla.org/kb/Firefox+hangs
Use "Firefox/File > Exit" (Mac: "Firefox > Quit"; Linux: "File > Quit") to close Firefox if you are currently doing that by clicking the close X on the title bar.
You can check for problems with the sessionstore.js and sessionstore.bak files in the Firefox Profile Folder that store session data.
Delete the sessionstore.js file and possible sessionstore-##.js files with a number and sessionstore.bak in the Firefox Profile Folder.

Deleting sessionstore.js will cause App Tabs and Tab Groups and open and closed (undo) tabs to get lost, so you will have to create them again (make a note or bookmark them).

  • Please help, I broke the Finder

I think I broke the Finder. I was trying to transfer some photos as my disk space was running low and I was trying to clean up and back up stuff so I could install Leopard. I had a bunch of photos I was trying to drag and drop from one folder on the desktop to another. My hand slipped and suddenly it said that it was copying the 1700+ photos to the desktop. Then my finder had a breakdown. Spinning beachball, had to force quit the finder, then had to push button because nothing was happening. When the computer came back up my dock was there with some apps still on it, but the hd icon, some folders and the ext. hd icon were gone. Finder would not work, could not open a new finder window. I unplugged hd manually, and got told that was bad, which I knew but if it had no icon on my desktop, I could not eject it.
Anyway, I ran disk utility (it is in my dock). It sees nothing wrong. I was going to run it from the install disk, but when I put a cd or dvd in the drive it does not show. The finder toolbar (or whatever it is called--File, Edit, View, Window, Help--at the top of the screen does not function. Trying to get a pull down menu results in more spinning beach ball. Apple menu seldom works.
I have turned the computer off twice with button, and unplugged it for a few minutes after one of those times.
I am at my wit's end. Is there any help? Closest apple store is 70 miles away, so if there is something I can do, I need to.
    Thanks in advance.

You want to run Disk Utility from the Tiger install disk. Reboot from it, select your language, and once the menu bar appears go to it and select Disk Utility. Run the Repair Disk function. If everything passes, fine. If it finds something to repair, run it again until the disk is reported fine. If it finds something it CAN NOT repair you'll have to invest in a specialized repair utility, Disk Warrior is one that many people recommend.
The hardware check is specific to each machine. To run that you would need to use the disks that came with the computer. The exact way to do it depends on the machine. There should be instructions on how to do it in the documentation that came with your computer. If you can't find that, do a search here on the Apple site for the appropriate computer.
I doubt you have a hardware problem, but wouldn't be at all surprised if Disk Utility finds something that needs repair in the directory structure. If it does, and is able to repair the damage, then you're fine. When you boot up normally into Tiger, launch Disk Utility again from the Utilities folder, and this time run Repair Permissions. You should then be set.

  • I cannot get the Menu options (file etc) or Help in updated firefox. I've got Windows Vista. I've done all the things reccomended in help pages ( i had to search for Help online!) and they don't work,

The ALT key gave no response
I found the place to tick Menu toolbar but no toolbar came up.
The Restore defaults toolbar thing doesn't have the options I want (File, print, help etc)
Beginning to think I'm going crazy

    fredmcd-hotmail,
The only "Firefox symbol" I see is the one with the blue fox 'spanning" a red globe. Neither left or right click brings up options.
As I wrote initially: "When I right-click on an empty section of the Tab Strip, all I get is options for the Navigation Toolbar, the Bookmarks Toolbar, and the Add-on Bar; no Menu Bar option."

  • WHERE THE HELL IS HELP TO RECREATE FIREFOX PROFILE?

I have spent hours trying to recreate my Firefox profile and the only thing I can do is import bookmarks. I want to import passwords, history and other files but cannot. This is frustrating as hell and Im about to go to Chrome if I have to start all over. This is a total pain in the butt now that the critical update for Firefox is now installed and I am back to square one. The directions in the Help forums suck because you have to close Firefox to in order to update it, but once you close it, the instructions go too. Totally stupid and useless. I should not have to go through this BS. Mozilla needs to simplify this process of transferring the user profile without having to spend fruitless hours trying to keep what I had.

You can copy the logins.json and key3.db files from the "Old Firefox Data" folder on the desktop to the current Firefox profile folder.
*Help > Troubleshooting Information > Profile Directory: Show Folder
Note that you should avoid copying files like prefs.js and temporary SQLite files (.sqlite-shm and .sqlite-wal) files and remove such files if they are already in the profile folder if you copy SQLite database files.
    Also extensions should be reinstalled.

  • All help posted for Firefox cannot load websites but other programs can fail, now what?

I have tried all the things listed but they made no difference at all.
I have no problem with IE. I have been to this site before and it is a bookmarked site.
This problem only came with the last update that never saved any of my search engines either.
Can go to some sites but not others and I have been there before.
Is it time to dump Firefox?
EDIT: One of the sites is speedtest.net, how crap is that?

Big FAIL there as well. I have already tried all that.
I also ran Moz Backup and that failed to help.
I can google speedtest but when I click on the result in the search it times out.
If I try from my bookmarks it also times out.
I have about 80 bookmarks I use all the time
I won't return to Firefox if this is the crap I get after updates.
Not the first time I have had to start from the beginning.
Why do they release this crap if it is not ready for us to use?
I have already tried all the things listed as well as increasing the time out period. That just took longer to tell me it had timed out. RUBBISH

  • Can someone help me when Firefox closes randomly it removes all the cookies and cache, and I am not able to restore lost tabs...?

For a while now Firefox has randomly shut down for reasons unknown. Sometimes windows reports the error but not always. When I start Firefox back up again, it does not restore my tabs. Also as an added bonus it deletes the cookies and cache, and I don't know why. Furthermore this occurrence has become more and more frequent. Just in the last hour along before writing this complaint, Firefox crashed three times right as I switch users, but not every time I switched. I am a taboholic, addicted to tabs, sometimes 70+, and this is the final straw. This frequency became more and more prominent a few days ago. When it first crashed, Windows was kind enough to let me know of the error which first occurred one to two weeks ago. It has become the very bane of my internet surfing. Someone please help, or I will have to renounce my allegiance to Firefox and switch to the dark side that is Crome.

<blockquote>... or I will have to renounce my allegiance to Firefox ...</blockquote>
There is no citizenship oath involved in using Firefox, it's a piece of software.
Look, if Firefox isn't generating any crash reports, you more than likely have an operating system or hardware issue. If Firefox is generating crash reports you can retrieve that information and post the report numbers here.
    https://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/Firefox+crashes#Getting_the_most_accurate_help_with_your_Firefox_crash
Type '''about:crashes''' in the URL bar and hit Enter.
Click the hyperlinks to bring up the Crash Report pages and copy'n'paste the URL of each of those reports into the message box here. We'll see if we can help you figure out what is causing those crashes to happen.

  • Help trouble-shooting firefox https/http/something issues

I just wrote a very long post only to be told on trying to submit it that I did not have permission to access the page.
I am having various extremely frustrating issues in firefox.
Some of these seem to be profile or addon related but I cannot quite pin anything down.
    With my default config:
    1. I cannot post in any thread in the forums.
    2. On tex.stackexchange.com, I cannot view many pictures in situ although I can view them in a new tab. These all seem to be hosted on http://i.stack.imgur.com.
    3. If I login to the meta site for tex.stackexchange.com, I end up on the regular site for tex.stackexchange.com. Although I appear to be me when I go there, I cannot post or vote or anything. If I try to navigate to meta from the top bar menu, I get a warning from firefox that I can't trust the connection because the certificate is not valid for the domain with the "get me out of here!" button.
    4. On SE's diagnostic site, https://meta.stackoverflow.com/network-login-help?, I get failures for both Messaging and Storage.
    5. Disabling rules for sites in https everywhere doesn't help. Nor does disabling it completely and disabling the ssl observatory. When I do that, I still seem to get errors in ~/.xsession-errors:
SSL Observatory: Cert submission failure 0:
With a clean profile in safe-mode:
    1. I just lost a post when I tried to submit saying I had no permission to access the page.
    2. If I try to navigate to meta from the top bar menu on tex.stackexchange.com, I get a warning from firefox that I can't trust the connection because the certificate is not valid for the domain with the "get me out of here!" button.
    3. On SE's diagnostic site, https://meta.stackoverflow.com/network-login-help?, I get a failure for just Messaging.
One of the problems is that what works one moment seems to fail the next and I can't get any robust work around which survives, say, a restart of the browser even using a clean profile. It is driving me nuts. Some of this is documented in this thread. (I always find firefox issues confusing.)
I first had problems at the same time as being bitten by a https everywhere bug which prevented login on SE sites. However, although that seems to have been resolved, the issues aside from that persist for me.
I am not using Arch's build but the 64bit from Mozilla. However, this version (26) worked for some time before I started seeing issues so I doubt it is a firefox update issue per se.
Does anybody have any thoughts about whether I am seeing one or several issues? how best to individuate them? and how best to diagnose them?
In the past, firefox issues have generally been entirely addon related and it has just been a question of being systematic but while some of this might be addon related, there seems to be a basic issue independent of my profile and addons. At least, so it seems given the failures in safe-mode with a clean profile. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated as this is driving me not-so-slowly mad.

I was wondering why I hadn't seen any posts from you for a while!
I had an issue just the other day that sounds kind of like this.  I couldn't post things on the forums, I couldn't log into a number of internet services, and things were just all around failing.  It took me a while of trying to debug my own local network to finally realize that it wasn't actually my problem.  In an effort to just see if things were getting through, I tried a speed test site.  The ping time and download speeds were normal, but my upload was working hardly if at all.
So I called comcast and was told to stop by the comcast store to trade in for a new cable modem.  I got home and it magically worked great.  In fact, there were several small issues I had with the last cable modem that were suddenly gone.
A grrr about the situation.  I had to go pick up the cable modem because they told me it would be $15 to ship the new modem out to me, and I would also have to pay for a service appointment.  The lady on the phone told me that comcast had recently made it so that they could not wave the fee for such things, despite the fact that it was their won hardware that was causing the problems.  Then of course when I went to the comcast place I took a number and waited a good two hours for a two minute cable box trade.  Thanks comcast, your customer service sucks.
