What do you need to do with this img?
For example, if you want to burn a physical DVD, you can easily accomplish that by using Disk Utility. You don't need FCP X at all.
You only need FCP if you need to make editing changes to your video. If that is the case, FCP will not open this img directly. Your best bet is to use MPEG Streamclip (free) and the QuickTime MPEG-2 Playback Component($20) installed. Then you will be able to create a file that FCP can work with.
But again, it depends on what you need to do with the file.
