Help I can't get past grey screen or reinstall osX

Hi I have an imac g5 without isight (non intel) and I tried to install the new osx update (this is thursday night). A pop up said the install failed and i tried to open a program, but it only bounced once on the dock and didn't open. When I tried to restart it, it froze on an empty backround so I manually turned it off. Now when I turn it on, I only get to the grey loading screen, then after a minute or two the fan turns on. I will not go past that no matter how long I let it sit.
I talked to the techguy at my school and he told me to archive reinstall it from the disc. When I try to do that, after installing the first disc of OSx (archive with preferences saved)It says the install was unsuccessful and to try again. I ran the hardware diognostic and it says there is nothing wrong with hardware. I dont know what to do. I'm going to try it again without preferences, but I absolutely cannot delete my hard drive. I am a film student and only a quarter of my stuff is backed up.
Please help, I could not afford the mac insurance renewall, I deffinately can't afford repairs or $49/hr apple help phonecalls. thank you.

"Disc repair was unsuccessful."
If it reported problems it could not repair then you may have directory damange/problems. Archive and Install is not going to solve this. The more you use your computer, the more damage you will cause your system if your directory is damaged.
You will need to purchased a stronger 3rd party utililty. The favorite around here is DiskWarrior followed by TechTool Pro. There are others.
You need to make your own decision on which to purchase. Read up on them on their websites because each does something a little different.

Just restore your bootable backup/clone or Time Machine backup.

  • Can't get past grey screen after update! Losing hope...

I've spent over a week trying to figure this out and about to give up... hoping that someone will reach out and try to help me resolve this. I'm seeing a lot of people with this problem, most go unsolved.
Downloaded and installed Mavericks from Mountain Lion on a Macbook Air 2012. After restart I get a grey screen (goes a little darker after a few seconds) with the Apple logo and nothing else. I can move the mouse though.
I've tried safe mode but the progress bar only goes 3/4 and then disappears and the grey screen and logo are all that remains.
Tried clearing PRAM and downloaded and installed at least 3 times now. Last time it stayed on saying that there was less than 1 minute left for over 10 minutes. Finally restarted... and brought  up the grey screen with the logo and here it is 45 min later!
Ran the disk utility on the Mavericks drive... it showed that the Mavericks drive had no repairs needed and all permissions are in order.
I do not have a backup or time capsule, so I'd really like to try to not do a clean install.
Really hope some good hearted Appleton will help me so I can be all happy with my Mac again!

Before proceeding further you should secure your data.  You are close to losing it and the instructions below will make a copy of it without having to boot the operating system.  The good news is it appears your system disk is reasonably healthy so this procedure should work.  You will need an external drive which you will erase as part of this procedure.
    Boot the recovery partition:
              • Press the power button and as you hear the bong,
hold down the Command and R keys.
Once booted, click on Disk Utility.
Format (and erase) the destination recovery disk:
Plug in the drive you are about to erase.
Select the volume that is NOT your system disk.
              Click on Partition.
Pull down under Partition Layout to 1 Partition.
              Click on Options…
              Select GUID Partition Table.
              Name: Emergency Backup
Format: Select Mac OS Extended (journaled)
              Click Apply.
              Click Partition.
Make a copy of your system disk on the recovery disk:
Drag and drop the named system disk to Source (often called Macintosh HD):
Drag an drop Emergency Backup to Destination:
              (Do not reverse these.)
Click Restore (the lower Restore button).
Be patient for it to do a full backup of your system disk.
Then try reinstalling Mavericks from the Recovery partition.

  • Help! Can't get past grey apple screen after Time Machine restore

Today I did a complete restoration of my HD using Time Machine. It seemed to successfully complete, prompting me to his <RESTART>, which I did. After the grey screen with the apple, I get this black and white pattern, almost like patchwork. Anyway, I've rebooted a zillion times, each time with the same result. I haven't had any luck starting in safe mode, but I'm wondering if the wireless keyboard is even being recognized. I've got a phone call request into Applecare, but I am really freaking out. Anyone ever heard of this before?

Did you use a Leopard disc for that? If so, that's your problem: you must use a Snow Leopard disc to restore a Snow Leopard backup.

  • Can't get past grey screen

I have a Macbook Pro 17" and i can't seem to make it past the grey screen with the waiting spiral. I have EXTREMELY important information on the hard drive. I need to get this information off of the hard drive. I have tried using a firewire attaching it to a G4 to try and access the information, and that was unsuccessful. I have also tried the archieve and install but it would not recognize the hard drive or any of the information. I have spoken to almost a dozen people and taken it to a computer store. PLEASE HELP ME!! i'm a photographer and it kills me to think of losing all my work.

    Bummer

  • IMac can't get past grey screen...

This all happened when I was creating an Image of an OS 10.4 dmg file. as soon as it finished different items began disappearing from the top Finder bar. Soon as I restarted I couldn't get past the gray screen with spinning thingy.
    Here's what I tried so far-without success:
_Zapped the PRAM (Option, Command, P, R keys held down on start-up); all peripherals had been disconnected.
_Reset the SMC controller by unplugging everything from the iMac for at least 15 seconds, and then powering back up with just the keyboard connected to it.
_Made a full hardware check holding down the "D" key with the MacOSX disc inserted upon start-up; the check turned out fine, no errors. no errors in my RAM chips either
_was able to successfully use Target Disk mode so I was able to back up my Hard Drive.
_Inserted the OS 10.4.7 Disc that came with the iMac, ran Disk Utility, selected my Hard Drive and ran a "Verify Disk" (said it had a error on the hard drive, so I then ran" Repair Disk" and told me it repaired whatever it needed to. (can't remember exactly what it said). booted it back up and still Gray Screen with spinning cycle
    few things to note:
_It won't let me boot into safe mode. (when i hold Shift down the Apple comes up but I get a circle with a diagonal line going thru it (like the no-smoking sign) flashing back and forth between that and the Apple logo until I let go of the Shift key.
__booted by holding down option, was able to select my Hard Drive {(apparently it still recognizes my HD (i.e. M. Scorsese icon)} but still won't work
i've run out of ideas other than restoring and erasing everything.

I think you did a pretty thorough job of trouble-shooting.
I think the problem is related to the error you got running +Verify Disk+ in Disk Utility. +Repair Disk+ may have reported it being repaired, but probably not completely. Some critical system file(s) may have been damaged.
Take a look at this article.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1417
I think you have done everything listed already, except using fsck, so try that method.
If that does not work and you decide to reinstall everything, you may want to first try the +Archive and Install+ option in Installer. +Archive and Install+ will give you a fresh system while maintaining your user account and settings. Some third-party apps may need to be reinstalled. Since you have a backup already, you could decide to completely erase the drive, reinstall, and restore data, as the last resort.

  • Help! Can't get past login screen!

My G3 desktop running OS X 10.2.8 has been acting odd for about a week - it's not listening to me! Netscape has been quitting on me arbitrarily [I use that mainly for it's mail function since my Eudora blew away on me a while back] and it just has not been responsive as usual. This morning I started it and signed in on the login screen; it appeared to be thinking, went blue and returned to the login screen. I was able to boot from the Install CD and ran the Disk Utility Repair for both the passwords and disk. Everything was okay. When the Install disk first opened [after the language choice] it told me I could not install on this computer - I know this is not good. I was able to start on OS 9 since that is not password protected. I'd like to have OS X not be password protected, also, but I can't get anywhere to choose that option!
I am able to access the files from another computer in the house - is there any way to get into the system preferences on the G3 from this other computer?
Any simple solutions? Even a complicated one would help. Thanks.

Reset the router for 30 secs. Keep holding the reset button for 30 secs when the router is powerred ON. Then power off the router and modem. Make sure the cable from modem is connected to Internet Port of the router. Power ON the modem first, wait for 30 secs, than the router. Connect the computer to any port [1, 2, 3 or 4]. Try  to access Internet. If fails, Open Internet Explorer, try the No. 192.168.1.1 password is admin. In the setup page, under Setup tab, click mac address clone.
Click Clone there. Save Settings and follow the process again [Turning OFF modem and router and Turning ON with the sequence].
    Should help.

  • Can't get past grey screen at start up (Late 2008 MBP)

Hi all, I have a late 2008, 15inch MacBook Pro. 2.4 GHz, with 4 GB DDR3 RAM, running Mavericks 10.9.2
    Symptoms
my problems started after finally upgrading to Mavericks 2-3 months ago. Upon restarting after the install I could only get to the grey/white screen, then it would either freeze, or restart (with a 'your computer was started because of an error' screen). This would go in a cycle half a dozen or so times before eventually starting up, and everything would then work as usual. Now however, it will not start up. It will boot up in Safe Mode every time.
    What I have tried
    SMC Reset
    NVRAM/PRAM reset
Have taken out additionally purchased RAM and tried booting without it
Tried booting without any peripherals plugged in
    Repaired Disk with Disk Utility
Run Cleaning and Maintenance software with Onyx
Erased disk (after backing up of course) and tried clean install of OS X from USB (the DVD drive failed some time ago and as such I cannot boot from disc, nor can I conduct a Hardware Test.
I haven taken my machine to an Apple Certified retailer/repair outlet (there is no Apple Store near me anymore), at first they said they couldn't find the problem, then told me the hard drive had failed, which I'm pretty sure is not the case. The error message screen implies my problems may be due to kernel panics, which I don't really understand quite honestly.
I have spent a lot of time researching these issues on the internet and have come across many cases that are similar and have tried all the suggested fixes. The solutions in the cases that have been resolved have not worked for me either unfortunately.
I think that's everything. If anyone can help or has any suggestions for things I may not have tried, I'd be very grateful. I can provide a recent Crash Report if necessary.
    Many thanks

Hey, thanks for taking the time to reply.

Sure, you can get around it if you don't need the newest version of iTunes. I still use version 7.5 because the newer versions didn't strike me as offering anything I needed.
If you do need a version 10-something then you will have to upgrade your operating system to Leopard (fi your computer will support it) at least.  If you need 10.5 for some reason then there's no getting around it, you will have to buy a new computer.

Have you tried resetting the device?
Hold down the home and lock buttons until you see an Apple Logo, then release the buttons.
If that doesn't work, you should check to see if you have a backup because you may have to restore your device.

  • My iPhone gone mad can't turn off voice control which turned on by itself now can't access phone as can't get past my screen lock! Also it keeps calling random people in my contacts help please

iPhone 4 gone mad voice control taken over phone, can't get past my screen lock it won't  respond at all, keeps dialling random people won't do anything at all!!! Even when go on voice control screen and hold power off and home screen down nothing No response. Help please? My mother very sick in hospital and need my mobile!!

Have you tried to power off and on?  If that doesn't work and the reset didn't work, have you tried connecting to iTunes to see if it is recognized?
If none of this works you probably need to visit an Apple genius bar and have it checked out by the techs.

  • Macbook keeps restarting, can't get past icon screen

I had to correct my permissions because I couldn't edit my address book and ical. Everything was working fine last night after I did the permission fixes. But when I booted up my Mac tonight, the farthest I could get was the white screen with the Apple icon and the animated circle. After a few minutes, the laptop will reboot itself and continued to do that for 30 minutes. I can't get past that screen. What is going on? How do I fix this? I finally turned off the Mac and am using my Dell.

The question mark on the file tells you that your MacBook wants to start up but can't find a viable OS to start from. Can you start up from the DVD that came with your Mac? If so, go to Disk Utility and see if you can repair the internal hard drive. If you can't see the hard drive from within DU, your drive may have failed, and you may need to replace it. Good luck.
