    Please help.
    I did something stupid.
I restored a previous backup onto my iphone5, without doing a backup on current first. Previous backup was about 4 months ago, and now I found that I had lost 4 months worth of photos (and videos)
Is there anyway I can retrieve those lost photos? lots of precious memories of kids and family in there. Will do anything to have them back.
P.S: Read that somewhere photos won't be lost, but apparently it wasn't so.

I kind of guessed that ....
    Excuse me while I do a silent scream ........ ...... ............ ........
curse the day I read that I can do a restore backup without doing a current backup .......
And all because some notes went missing ....
Thanks for all those who read my last rant ....

  • I did something stupid and afraid I invited virus or trojan HELP

Ok, I did something really stupid, and after a few hours of beating my head against the wall, I am reaching out here to see if anyone can calm my nerves.
I just purchased a Brother Printer and was having difficulty setting up the wireless connection. I googled "Brother printer customer service phone," and the top of the page it said, Brother Printers with a phone number. I called that number and the tech person said he needed to take control of my computer to see what drivers I needed (he comes Mr. Stupid...that would be me). The tech person directed me to download a program called Team Viewer, and after taking control, he opened the TERMINAL BASH window and pointed out to me the words, "CODE RED." He told me that I have a virus and that's why I could set up my printer wirelessly. He started telling me about a virus program, and it was at this point the my Mr. Stupid thought is this really the Brother Printer company. I hung up and called back the number 866-362-8280 and asked if they were Brother Printer. The person said they weren't that they do tech support for them and that this company is called, Alpha Systems. I looked up Alpha Systems phone number and they said that number is not there's. I called back that number and this time another person said that the name of the company was NBTECHERS. I asked if that person who took control of my computer did anything like plant a virus or create a way to see all my files, he said no (yea sure, the voice of truth?). I called Apple Care and they were terrific in helping out and walked me thorugh what Adware Medic would do automatically (my OS was too old for Adware to install) and removed all the TeamWare and everything else in the specific folders.
FINALLY, HERE IS MY QUESTION TO MY FELLOW MAC's and not as stupid as I am people:
Is there anyway other than the Adware Medic to check if there's anything this awful ripoff company did to my computer?

Unfortunately, after these scammers have had remote access, there is no way of being 100% sure that your computer is clean. AdwareMedic won't help with that, even if you were running a newer system. Neither will anti-virus software. Your system should be considered compromised at this point. You will need to erase the hard drive and reinstall everything from scratch. For instructions, see:
How to reinstall Mac OS X from scratch
(Fair disclosure: I may receive compensation from links to my sites, TheSafeMac.com and AdwareMedic.com.)

  • I did something stupid - need help

I'm using iWeb for sharing photos, podcasts, etc. A week ago while editing, I accidently renamed my web-site, which is the name at the top of the site organizer. Consequently, this changes the address and the links I sent to people no longer work.
What is the default name which is used to publish to .Mac?
    Help!

As long as you have only one site, it doesn't matter. The following will work (and your site name will automatically be added).
    http://web.mac.com/yourdotmacname/iWeb
However, if you already gave out the long name to your friends and can't remember what it is, why not ask one of your friends? (I'd ask one that already owes me big time!)
One other thought. If you did NOT publish with the incorrect name, simpy open your browser and enter the short name and you'll see the old site name yourself.

  • I don't care if you think i did something stupid just help me.

So here is what happened. A while ago i accidentaley left my ipod out in a full downpour. It survived but it started doing weird things like when i tried to watch a video it would enter the video thing and for a few seconds the screen would go black. Then it would go back to the menu and then i could watch the video. later on it started totally freezing up and so i restarted it. when i did it showed little sad ipod. so i did it again and it started acting normal. later it started clicking sometimes while i was using the buttons. i now realize that is the hard drive. after that LCD juice in the screen starting coming out so i sent it in to get repaired. after a while i was so fruastrated with my ipod clicking and screwing up i started banging it on my couch and bed mattress. That made it freeze for a few seconds every time i pushed the buttons. i banged it on things some more and now what happens is every time i restart it it shows sad ipod. so i restart it again and this time it starts clicking, and it switches between the apple logo and the sad ipod twice, then says connect to computer to restore. so i connect it and now it switches between apple, sad ipod, and +very low battery, please wait+ for about 30 minutes then automatically switches to forced disk mode for i dont know how long. and it dosent connect to itunes whatsoever. So i'll say it once more: +*CALLING ALL MAGICIANS AND MIRACLE MAKERS*+

similiar thing happening to me except for the leaving it out in rain, banging it against stuff, LCD juice, clicking and screwing noises, and forced disk mode. so basically mine just goes to sad ipod when i try to turn on then shuts off, but when i have it connected to charger/computer it goes to sad ipod screen to low battery screen, restarts and repeats

  • I did something stupid

First time for me so here goes. I have a PC. I downloaded a [Genius] system to improve the drivers (messing about with something I did not understand ... blame my age, 61). Silence from then onwards. I removed the system and hoped the sound would return but it did not. My Sound Blaster Audigy Advance AB has been brilliant for 5 years. If I go into Control Panel the audio icon is grey not black. If someone recognises my problem and can help me with this, I will be very grateful.

I don't know what operating system you have or had on your PC, but assuming it was some version of Windows, have you tried simply uninstalling and reinstalling your soundcard hardware and software?

  • I did something stupid (i386)

I was messing around in my command line, when the autocomplete feature showed me the command i386. I wanted to know what it did, so I ran it. I can't believe I did this, but I guess I expected it to display help to explain the command. Instead, it ran without output. Afterwards, I did "man i386" and it brought up the setarch man page. My question is, how do I reverse this change?

No, I ran it as a normal user.
I've read over the man page, it seems to suggest that it did nothing to my system. Is this true?
Edit: I just noticed something interesting, after running i386 in a terminal, running exit displays the output 'logout' instead of exiting. Then, running exit closes the terminal. What is the meaning of this? This seems to reinforce the idea that is made no change.

  • I think I did something stupid

Problem: System profile won’t acknowledge printer. No printers list under USB in print utility.
Equipment: IMAC OS 10.3.9. Epson Stylus C60 printer.
Stupid thing I did: When printer was giving me problems, I deleted printers from Print Utility list before downloading a driver.
Steps taken: Per the Epson people, I repaired permissions. Threw out Epson folder from library.
Results: No improvement. Is it time to restore my software? I should mention that some of my applications seem to be crashing more than usual and it’s running slow. Can anyone help with this?

    Hello grouchyfoglady,
    1. Try to download and install the latest printer driver from Epson.
    2. Download and install MacJanitor from http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/10491
Run the Daily, Weekly, and Monthly utilities.
    (In fact, run them regularly).
    3. If this doesn't help, download and run Printer Setup Repair from http://www.fixamacsoftware.com/software/psr4/index.php. Has a 7 day free trial period.
    Hope this helps.

  • I did something stupid, and lost all my photos in iPhoto

So, I thought I was in a specific Album with 5 photos in it I wanted to remove from iPhoto. I hit Apple-A to select all and hit delete. It wasn't until a moment later that I realized I must have actually been in my Library, and removed ALL my photos from iPhoto.
Now, all the Albums still appear in the left of iPhoto (6.0, BTW), but when I click on the albums, no photos appear. I went through my hard drives and dragged the appropriate photos back to their original Albums to reimport them into iPhoto. This worked fine with old photos I had organized BEFORE I switched to importing everything in iPhoto.
When I try to import those newer photos, the ones imported through iPhoto over the past couple of years, I keep getting the following error: "The following files could not be imported (they may be an unrecognized file type or the files may not contain valid data)." The files are fine...I'm just trying to import them from their organized roll folder in the iPhoto folder under Photos. Sometimes, I will also get an error that says the file is "already in the iPhoto library."
Is there some kind of preference or something I need to delete so I can reimport these photos from the iPhoto folder into iPhoto again?

    EditThis:
If you did not empty the iPhoto Trash via the iPhoto menu the photos will still be in the iPhoto trash container in the Source pane. Click on the trash icon, select all of the photos and drag to the Library icon at the top of the Source pane. They will be returned to their rolls and albums.
The reason you're getting that message is you're trying to import photos that are within the iPhoto Library folder. That can't be done.
    Do you Twango?

  • Did something stupid, stuck in darwin

    Hey everyone,
I have a young kid coming over and I set up a guest user account for him. In doing so I decided that I wanted to lock him out of my hard drive, so I logged back into my admin account did "get info" on my hard drive and set it up so that admins have read/write permissions and non-admins don't. I thought this was risky but would be reversable if I just logged back into my admin account, what I didn't realize was that OSX treats the user login screen as a user, and therefore I locked the computer out of the gui user login screen. Now when I turn on my computer it boots into Darwin/BSD and prompts me for a login/pass. I can type in my admin login/pass, but I'm not sure what to do next to fix the issue. I guess I have a few questions, and if I'm totally off let me know:
    1) Is there a UNIX command to get me out of Darwin and back into my GUI after loging in as an admin in darwin? (unless the GUI and darwin are not running in any related way)
    2) Will this require a system dvd to reverse the settings on my hard drive access priviledges?
and thanks in advance for any advice you may have, it is greately appreciated.

You need to get into single user mode. The startup drive is named: / You need to change the permissions on it. I tried the command on another directory.
This is safe if you limit yourself to these commands.
You need to get into single use mode for the commands that are listed below.
This page will tell you how to get into single user mode.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1492
Basically, you hold down the command-s key then powering on your machine. The command key has a little apple symbol on the lower left. It is between the alt/option key and the space bar. On a PC keyboard, it will be the windows key, I think.
( Do you know Unix. You are in a Unix single user console. ) The setup commands you need should be listed on the screen. For Mac OS 10.4.11, the commands are:
    # Type the follow two instructions to access the startup disk in read/write:
    /sbin/fsck -fy
    /sbin/mount -uw /
    root # cd /
    root # pwd
    root # ls -ld
    drwxrwxr-t   48 root  admin  1734 Dec 31  1969 ./
    root # chmod 1775 /

  • I think I did something stupid with iSync

I am trying to get my Treo 650 to sync with my powerbook and iCal, specifically. Someone told me to get the isync conduit and install it and badda bing, my ical should sync with my treo. problem is, is now I cannot open isync, and when I try to install i sync v.2.1 it says I cannot because I have a newer version on my computer already. Since I cant open it, I am as you say, iscrewed! How do I find that application of isync, and or how to do get it all of my comp and re-install v.2.2? Thanks much~

  • I did something stupid, can I un-do it?

Okay, so when I first got Tink the Wonder Boxen, I was very happy to have my own computer that I could have root on. My ex is a fairly hardcore kernel hacker, and we'd been running Debian unstable on it, so it's probably a good thing that I didn't have root...anyway!
I figured out how to create accounts and I made three of them-one for school things, one for personal things, and one account for who knows what.
The problem is, I have things on all three accounts that I kind of need in one place, like bookmarks on Safari and Firefox, bits of an accounting project that really needs to be in one folder, etc, etc. It's ugly. It's fugly. It's bad.
Is there any way I can merge accounts? I only want one account, honest to goshness, and I want all my stuff in it. I'd like to be able to listen to all my Mp3's (only one user has the collection), use all my software (only one user has that info), and on and on.
I'm enthusiastic but I will be strait-up honest- I'm not that fantastic with computers yet. I can play just a little in the shell, know ls and grep (kind of), but I'm a lot better at creating problems for myself than fixing them at this point.
Is it even possible to merge accounts? If not, how can I delete the extra accounts and save my data(move it all to one account)?
    Thanks a lot!

    Bippy,
    You're a mess, you are!
Yes, it is possible to "merge" accounts, but maybe not like you are thinking, or as easily. You have two things with which you will need to deal: First, there are individual files; these are easy enough to deal with. Second, there is infomation that will be contained within files; this is the tricky part.
To give you an example of how this can be tricky, let's consider the info for a single application, say Safari (and its bookmarks). Safari will collect all of your bookmarks and keep them in a single file, stored in your HOME folder. In another account, you might have different bookmarks, but all contained within the same file, only within this second account. As I mentioned, it is easy enough to move the "account 2" file into "account 1," but it can be used by Safari only by completely over-writing the existing file. Basically, you would replace your "account 1" bookmarks with your "account 2" bookmarks; not ideal.
The alternative, then, is to import the new bookmarks into Safari. You can export and import bookmarks in Safari from the "File" menu. Export from account 2, transfer the file to the account 1, then import in that one. Go slowly and methodically, exporting and importing the application info you want to "merge."
For plain old files, log into account 2 and do a thorough search for everything you might need in account 1. Once you have located everything, just drag it to a location that can be accessed from account 1 (the "Shared" folder in "Users" is a good place). Now, log into account 1 and move them to the correct place(s) in that account. Hint: It might be better to copy the files into the new account by Option-Dragging them; this will insure that your account 1 user has complete ownership of the files.
If you do ever have problems with ownership once files have been moved, you can use the following command in Terminal to correct any problems:
    <pre style="overflow:auto; font-family: 'Monaco'; font-size: 10px">sudo chown -R `id -u`:`id -g` /Users/`id -un`</pre>
I would recommend that you make a text clipping of this command and use it at the appropriate time by dragging it into Terminal.
Let's say that you have a bunch of Word documents in both accounts. Some of the Word documents are duplicated in both accounts, but there are files that are unique in both. These files can be "merged" by selecting all of the files from one account and dragging them to the folder containing all of the files in the second. You would then use the "Replace" dialogue that will pop up and choose not to replace any files, using the "Apply to All" option. This will effectively "merge" the two collections. Different versions of the same file must be dealt with on a file-by-file basis.
Keep at it, very patiently, until you find that one account is no longer necessary. When you find that you are never logging into this account to retrieve stuff (and you are quite sure), go ahead and delete the account.
    Scott
p.s. Baltwo's suggestion to "archive" one account is a good one, but only after you have exported any data that must be handled in this fashion. Once the account has been archived, individual files can be moved to the other account by mountng the disk image as he has mentioned. Any files you move will then be copied, and ownership in the new account will be insured. -s

  • Can anyone help me correct a stupid email mistake?

I needed to transfer some saved emails from one iMac to another - and I did something stupid. I copied the saved email folder - put it on my "stick" and tried to re-copy the files on to another computer. Needless to say, it didn't work. Can anyone help me retrieve these emails?

    We're using POP3.
I moved the folders (2) to the desk top and then copied them to my flash stick - thinking I could just copy them onto the 2nd iMac and move them into the mail folder on that computer. It didn't work. I clearly have the files - they show up in the copied folders - but I can't access them.
Unfortunately (and here's the really stupid part) after I had copied them to my flash stick I deleted the folders from the original computer - so I can't even print the darn things!
Any help will be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks!

I have a Mac Air. I stupidly did something that wiped out the machine and I managed (wow) to get the system back only with the old operation system that was a free upgrade at the time I bought this. Help! Do I have to purchase a new one now? Thanks

If you paid for OS 10.8 at any time, you can get it again at no cost from the App store. You will need to use the same Apple id that you used for the purchase.
