Help!  I don't think my files backed up and system crashed!

Help!  I don't think my files backed up and when I restart computer it only comes up with osx utilities but won't  let me reinstall or do anything.  Is there anything I can do?  I didn't set up time machine because my external hard drive was full!

Did you run Verify and Repair in Disk Utility?  It will correct possible disk problems or indicate that the HDD is faulty.
Ciao.
Until you do that, a reinstallation may be pointless.

I've asked identical questions but received no answers.

It shouldn't be.  You can use multiple Apple ID's one one device. But keep in mind that purchases made under one ID are permanently tied to that ID.  So if you need to update an app that was purchased with a certain Apple ID, it will needed to be updated with those Apple ID credentials.

  • Pdf files as applications and preview crash

    hi everyone
some system glitches im trying to figure out:
I was following an apple guide on how to make FCP manuals (pdf) searchable by spotlight. It involved saving the manuals with Preview on the desktop ( those files are usually inside the FCP application) and storing them at a different location...somewhere in this prossess i guess they will be indexed by spotlight.
The problem is that when i tried this preview just frose and couldnt save the file..just the spinning beachball of doom.
not knowing if it would work (in regard to spotlight) I decided to try to do the same but using acrobat. so just to start me off i tried to get info on some other pdf. manuals installed with FC studio (motion manual etc.) and change the open with default to acrobat instead of preview. To my utter surprise this option was not available in the Info panel...and the reason (presumably) : The system classifies the files applications?! ...they still open in preview as pdf. files (and as before cant be saved to desktop). but the info panel says they are .app
    how can this be rectified?
    help needed
    thanks

This change of behaviour is most annoying, and to my mind is further proof that the primary function of iTunes as a music player/organiser has been lost sight of in the welter of iPod/iPhone/iPad 'features'.
I find that I can still import PDF booklets into the main Music library, but they no longer merge with their related album as they used to when Album Title and Album Artist were set appropriately. What you need to do now if this is what you want to happen is Get Info on the PDF booklet after you import it, and change the Media Type to 'Music' in the Options tab (iTunes 9.2 sets this to 'Book' by default).
It's a nuisance to have to perform this additional step, but at least it brings back the previous behaviour.

  • Recovering iTunes from back-up post system crash and OS re-install.

Following yet another Windows related crash of my system I now have two HDDs, one for the OS and one for data.
I have a back-up of the entire iTunes folder from 'My Music' which currently contains all iTunes housekeeping files (database, playlists etc) and all the actual music files.
What I'd like to do is have this entire iTunes folder on the Data HDD so that, effectively, it is automatically backed-up becasue it's not on the same drive as the OS (Win XP). Is there a way to tell iTunes where this folder is and to use this one instead of the one in 'My Music'?
If this 'Rolls Royce' solution is not possible, how do I split this folder up, put the database and settings files back in the right place on the OS HDD, leave the music files on the Data HDD and then tell iTunes where all my music is?
Final question - What would happen if I changed the installation directory for iTunes during set-up to one on the Data drive? Would iTunes still look for the 'My Music' folder in Windows?
    Thanks,
    Jack

If I understand correctly, you have a backup of your iTunes folder and this folder contians your iTunes Music folder where all your music files are located.
This is the default arrangement for iTunes.
If this is the case, just copy your iTunes folder from backup onto your data disk drive. Then start iTunes with the shift key held down. You should be asked to choose a library. Navigate to the iTunes folder on the data disk drive and choose iTunes library.itl.
This only works properly if your music files are in the iTunes Music folder. It is more complicated if this is not so.

  • I cannot print web pages. Tried printing with IE and it worked, so this is Firefox-specific. I will have to stop using it unless someone can help me figure out why it won't let me print a web page. Help! Don't want to go back to IE!

Can't print from Firefox. ONLY Firefox, and only since downloading v.4. Can I get back to V. 3? Kind of reminds me of when Windows XP "advanced" to Vista.

Try to create a new profile as a test to check if your current profile is causing the problem.
    See "Creating a profile":
    *http://kb.mozillazine.org/Standard_diagnostic_-_Firefox#Profile_issues
If the new profile works then you can transfer files from a previously used profile to the new profile, but be cautious not to copy corrupted files to avoid carrying over problems.

  • Please somebody help- I don't understand binary files!!

I have binary files (.bin). They contain 2D arrays of data in I16 files. It does me no good to have a .bin file.
I HAVE to be able to view this data in a spreadsheet and I am getting very impatient because I have yet to figure out how to do this correctly. Everytime I've attempted to build a VI on my own, or edit the "High Speed Data Reader.VI", I don't get the numbers I need.
*What is a good way for me to get the binary file into a spreadsheet.
*Is there some other type of code/application I could link to in a VI to read and translate the .bin file?
    I have Labview 6.1.
I am attaching a .bin file like what I need to convert.
    THANKS!!!

    Hi Lauren,
There are a couple of ways to proceed.
You can open and read the file. It should be a string of ASCII representation of the values stored (weird characters). To look at them, place an indicator where you read the file. On the front panel, right-click the indicator and select HEX Display.
To manipulate the data, you can type cast it into as a integer... Then place it into a 2D array...
    Better method:
In the Functions Palette, select File IO, then Binary Files vi, and place the "Read from I16 File.vi"
You can wire directly to the output called "2D array".
(much simpler than above). You can then wire this into "array to Spreadsheet String.vi"..
Actually, an example may be simpler to explain...
    (especially on a Friday

  • Installed OSX 10.6.8 on iMac and now I have two icons in my dock for time machine and can't access either one.  I don't think it is backing up to time capsule either.  Anyone else have this issue?

I installed OSX 10.6.8 on iMac and now I have two icons for time machine in my dock.  When I try to access either one the wheel goes round and round.  I seem to have lost all back ups that were on Time Capsule.  Not sure how to check or what to do.  Thanks.

See what happens if you select the TM icon in your menubar, and select Enter Time Machine there.

  • I think bookmark file is corrupt and I want to fix it due to lack of backup. Firefox keeps freezing when I use current bookmarks

For some reason, my Firefox browser keeps crashing every time I try to go to another site besides my homepage. I have tried creating new profiles, checking my extensions, refreshing my copy of Firefox, reinstalling, etc. The only common thread is that I copy over the "places" files from my old profile so I don;'t lose all my bookmarks. Finally, I reinstalled Firefox and built a new profile from scratch without moving the "places" files. I have a bookmark file .html backup from when the trouble began; my last backup was 1 year old. Importing this file seems to reintroduce the problem, so I am assuming the file is corrupt. Is there any way to troubleshoot, diagnose and repair corrupted .html bookmark files or the "places" files in my profile?

There are usually no problems to be expected when you import an HTML backup.
It is usually better not to use the places.sqlite file as that is a much more likely cause of issues.
If you have JSON backups (.json or compressed .jsonlz4) then you can try to use these to restore the bookmarks.
There might be incompatibilities with a JSON backup of older Firefox versions.
You can check for problems with the <b>places.sqlite</b> database file in the Firefox profile folder.
    *https://support.mozilla.org/kb/Bookmarks+not+saved#w_fix-the-bookmarks-file
    *Places Maintenance: https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/addon/places-maintenance/
To recover from a corrupted places.sqlite you can remove all places.sqlite file(s) in the Firefox profile folder to make Firefox rebuild the places.sqlite database from the most recent JSON backup (bookmarks-YYYY-MM-DD_<item count>_<hash>.json) in the bookmarkbackups folder.
Note that the file name of an automatic JSON backup includes a total item count (folders and separators are included).

  • Help in how to display pdf file in adobe and NOT in internet explorer

does anyone know what settting need to change ? I have alreadt unticked the check box for "Display in Browser" and re-started IE ,but i still shows the PDF in IE.
    Any suugestions ??
    Thanks Paul.

    You can't really.
You need to use DHTML in the swf-wrapper HTML file, usually a
division wrapped iFrame, and load the PDF into the iFrame as an
    overlay to the Flash.

  • While in school An IT person accidently removed files of my CS6. I have the Disc. How can I replace or get these files back in my system?

I need help to, I guess reinstall my CS6 in my computer. I'm not sure how to do this and I need simple instructions for an aged Old school.

There is nothing mystic about it. You simply run the installer and type in your serial, if necessary. Since your install is damaged and thus it won't be possible to properly uninstall, running the cleaner tool is the only additional step.

  • I don't want to lose my bookmarks and system I've set up, how do I sync a new computer without losing my old sync information?

I have a very extensive bookmark system already in place with the old sync. I just got a new laptop and need all of those bookmarks to transfer and sync to the new laptop. The website tells me that it doesn't recognize my account name, and I don't want to lose all my old information. I am scared that the procedure they mention if you have an old account, will not sync my bookmarks. How should I proceed?

Note that you have to update ALL of your devices to use Firefox 29 in order to use the new Sync. Once you update your Sync account to the new version using the [[How to update to the new Firefox Sync]] link then your bookmarks ,etc will be transferred over.
Thank you Ed for putting that in. It's always recommended to back up all of your personal information e.g. bookmarks, passwords in case something goes wrong.

  • Saving files very slow, and sometimes crashes.

When saving files, it is extremely sluggish, regardless of what the file contains (tons of images, or a few shapes with text). When the "Progress" window pops up, the program will grey out, and display the Not Responding in the header, and appear completely unresponsive. Though it does eventually save the file. This is a work computer, so I don't do anything besides Photoshop and Illustrator. The system specs are:
    Windows 7 64
    12GB RAM
    Intel Core i7 860 @ 2.80HZ
I don't see it as being a hardware issue, as I mentioned this delay happens regardless of the type I am working with. I experience this when saving files locally, and saving them on our network, both yield the same results.
EDIT: Forgot to mention that this hasn't always been like this. Few weeks ago it was all working flawlessly (even just saving to the network directly instead of copying), it's just been slowly getting worse.

Check your printers. this error is related to the default printer and print service. If you have an offline or unconnected printer, this is most likely your issue.
Remove any offline or old/duplicate references to networked printers. If the printer is timing out, you will experience lag in Photoshop and Illustrator even on fast systems.
If you did not have any old printers, then recreate and update your print driver, as you may have a corrupt .ppd file.

  • When trying to attach a document, a dump file is created and SBO crashes.

    Good day all,
When a user try to attach a document, using the Browse Button, SBO crashes and creates a dump file. The same happens when "manager" tries to attach a file from that PC. From other PC's there is no problem. We can access the attachments folder from that PC. The path also points through the server, (through the network), and not to C drive.
Does somebody maybe have a solution? SAP 2007A SP01 PL05.
    Kind regards

    Hi Carin ,
Have you assinged the proper path to the Attachment Folder in the " Path Tab "
of  Administration --> System Initialization  --> General Settings .
If the path is assinged to some network place and not working .
Then once try to assing some local machine path and then try the same ..
If the problem solve with local path  .. then there may be some problem with the network .
    Hope it Helps
    Thanks
    Ashish
