Help! I dowloaded an automatic update & now can't login to my Mac!!!

I started with Mac OS X v10.4 on my computer, but set it up for automatic updates. After downloading the latest update yesterday, after I type in my password on the login screen, I briefly see a "blank desktop" view (i.e., I can see the wallpaper that I normally have displayed) and then the screen goes to a "blank light blue" screen before returning me to the log in screen. I've tried running the disk utility but no luck... Does anyone have a suggestion???

If you are ok with using the terminal you can try this, copied from another thread
+FIXED WITHOUT REINSTALLING OS X+
+Found the install disk, booted from it, and instead of doing archive/install, went to Utilities | Terminal. Note that my laptop's HD is called "Laptop HD", not the standard "Macintosh HD" ...+
+I didn't have a USB drive handy, so I had to get the installer package over using another networked computer and HTTP:+
+On another computer, downloaded the installer package, opened the disk image, and copied the package itself to my ~/Sites folder. Renamed it "fix.pkg" to make for less typing. Right-clicked and selected "make an archive of fix.pkg" to make "fix.pkg.zip". Made sure web sharing was on in the System Prefs.+
+Back on BustedMac, typed the following:+
+cd "/Volumes/Laptop HD/Users/myuserid"+
+../../usr/bin/curl http://myothercomputeraddress/~myuserid/fix.pkg.zip -o fix.pkg.zip+
+../../usr/bin/unzip fix.pkg.zip+
+Now, having the package on the machine, I then did as suggested in a few other related threads:+
+../../usr/sbin/installer -pkg package.pkg -target "/Volumes/Laptop HD"+
+The package installer then ran (in the Terminal window). It said "Installer: Package name is Mac OS X Update (Intel)" and then another line ... sat there for a minute, then gave lots of errors about kexts not containing code for the architecture specified (which seems odd ... are these PPC-only kexts maybe?). Again, it sat for a few minutes with the fans on and periodic disk activity. Finally, it gave the following message:+
+"installer: The install was successful".+
+Quit Terminal.+
+Force-Rebooted (the installer disables the usual system restart menu option, so that's the only choice).+
+For giggles, I held down Command-V while rebooting ... got to the point of the "diskarb isn't ready yet" messages (and actually something which looked a bit alarming about giving up waiting for diskarb), and about 5 minutes later I had my login screen.+
+So, if you are at all adept with the command line, this will give you a way to re-run a failed OS X update without trashing the entire system!+
+15" MacBook Pro Mac OS X (10.4.10)+
If not I would suggest an Archive and install from the cd. And then run the updates.

    ah, one of those.
with that one, let's try the following procedure.
first, head into your Add/Remove programs and uninstall your QuickTime. if it goes, good. if it doesn't, we'll just attend to it when we attend to itunes.
next, download and install the Windows Installer CleanUp utility. use it to clear any existing itunes and/or QuickTime installation configuration information from the PC.

  • June 10 2012 Firefox automatically updated itself (no choice) on my Intel Mac/Tiger 10.4.11. Can no longer use Firefox, so how do I get back the old one?

June 10 2012 Firefox automatically updated itself (no choice) on my Intel Mac/Tiger 10.4.11. I can no longer use Firefox. I have an old version of Firefox on my Mac G4, but am scared to use that machine in case that Firefox also automatically updates itself. How can I transfer a copy of that older version of Firefox (from the G4) to the Intel Mac, and how do I stop both versions from then automatically updating? How do I then remove the updated version of Firefox from the Intel Mac, which I cannot use? Thank you for your help.

esqki FF update to 13 and now you can't open ? sorry about that.
    1. Download (with your safari) a copy of the latest (3.6.28) from your 10.4.11 mac
    from
    ftp://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/mozilla.org/firefox/releases/3.6.28/mac/
    2. '''Trash''' the current Firefox application to do a clean install.
    3. Install the version that you have downloaded (3.6.28).
Do not select to remove your personal data, your profile data is stored elsewhere in the [http://kb.mozillazine.org/Profile_folder_-_Firefox Firefox Profile Folder], so you won't lose your bookmarks or other personal data.

after install the 3.6.28 version go to: Options > Advanced > Update tab > Firefox updates, check mark '''Never check for updates (not recommended: security risk)''', click Ok to save it, exit firefox and restart it.

Hello fuchs (guess), If you cancelled while downloading the 4GB Lion, no problem, download again. Snow Leopard should run (start holding the option key).
If you cancelled during the install process, I do not know. In this case you could try to start with the CMD + R keys pressed, and choose the restore, which may work if the creation of the restore partition of Lion has finished.
If that does not work, reinstall Snow Leopard with the CD (start holding the C key), after that download the Combo Update 10.6.8 to update the Snow Leopard completely, then redownload Lion (App Store, click "purchases" while holding the Option Key, find Lion, click "install"). If you want to have your own copy of the Lion installer, you have to copy the installer to a Memory stick or burn to DVD before you install, see else where.

    Hey jamesarm97 & diegofoto,
On August 21st, some users may have been unable to access iCloud services for a short period of time. Apple worked quickly to resolve these issues, however you two may have experienced them. To check the current status of these systems please see:

A particular network user can't login to a mac in a classrom but other network users can. Then the network user can login to other identical macs in same classroom. Anyone seen this before? It has happen twice. Two different teachers in two different classrooms entering the correct user name and passwords and computer won't allow them to login. Then they try in different computers in same classroom and have no problem login.

Yes. I can login with a test user. And any other network user can login as well to this particular mac. Actually the mac has bootcamp and boots into either mac or windows. The same user entering the same login username and password can login into the windows side, but not the mac side.
I had this same issue last semester in another classroom, another mac and a different teacher. This summer I reformatted and imaged that mac and I asked that teacher to login today to that reimagened mac and she had no problem today doing so.

  • I automatically updated to Firefox 4.0.1 for Mac, and now the program misbehaves. It hangs when I try to quit. Can I downgrade to 4.0?

I was running 4.0 on my Intel Mac (Leopard 10.5.8), and everything was fine. Firefox automatically updated me to 4.0.1. Then I noticed my computer running very slowly. I am unable to quite Firefox without forcing a quit.
Can I reinstall 4.0? If so, where can I download the original version?
    Thanks.

Your users agent is stuck at Firefox 3.0.11 due to a extension during when you had 3.0.11 and it tacked on stuff on end and kept it from updating the version number. This was due to the "Fast Browser Search toolbar" extension (FBSMTWB). This issue is not a problem with Firefox 4.0 and newer.

  • Problem with software update - now can't log on to administrator account

    Hello -
I updated software yesterday and didn't pay attention to what was updating. I always just install the updates when they come up.
Now I can't login to my administrator account or change the password. I could log into another account, but iTunes won't stay open. It opens for about 10 seconds then closes.
So I'm assuming that the updates were a mac OSX update and an iTunes update.
Does anyone know why this is happening and how to fix?
Is there anyway to "undo" the most recent update?
    Any help would be appreciated.
    -jamendan

Hi jamendan, and a warm welcome to the forums!
Could be many things, we should start with this...
    "Try Disk Utility
    1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc that came with your computer, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
    2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
*Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.*
    3. Click the First Aid tab.
    4. Click the disclosure triangle to the left of the hard drive icon to display the names of your hard disk volumes and partitions.
    5. Select your Mac OS X volume.
    6. Click Repair. Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk."
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106214
Then Safe Boot from the HD, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, reboot when it completes.
The usual reason why updates fail or mess things up, is if Permissions are not fixed before & after every update, with a reboot... you may get a partial update when the installer finds it doesn't have Permissions to change one obscure little part of the OS, leaving you with a mix of OS versions.
Some people get away without Repairing Permissions for years, some for only days.
If Permissions are wrong before applying an update, you could get mixed OS versions, if Directory is the slightest messed up, who knows!
If many Permission are repaired, or any Directory errors are found, you may need to re-apply some the latest/biggest updates.
May even need to do an Archive and Install if you have room on the HD...
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=107120
I only use Software Update to see what is needed, then get them for real via...
    http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/
That way I can wait a week or so, check the forums for potential problems, and get Permissions & such in order before installing.
