HELP!!!!  I get the folder with a ? in the middle of the screen...

In preparation to sell my refurbished iMac Power PC G4, I hooked it up to my new mac, started it in Target Mode, and did a 7-pass erase using the Disk Utility. When I went to start my iMac G4, I got the folder with the ?. In attempting to do some research on why it did this and what I can do to fix it, I read to hit the option key when starting it up. I did this to see what would happen. I now have a button with the refresh icon, and another button that has a straight arrow pointing to the right. I tried clicking on both and nothing happened. Anyone have any idea what the problem is and how to fix it?? Please keep in mind, I originally bought it used and it did not come with a startup disk, and it came installed with Tiger.
Thank you!

When you did the installation of new software for the iMac, since you didn't have the original discs, did you use a newer retail disc, or a disc from the eMac? If a disc from the eMac, that's not compatible with the iMac. Macs can only startup from the discs that they came with or newer retail discs.
Retail discs that iMac G4s from August 22nd, 2002 or earlier instance can startup from are:
iMac G4s from August 23rd, 2002 to February 3, 2003 can startup from:
iMac G4s from February 4, 2003 can startup from:
*, *, and *.
iMac G4s from October 24, 2003 can startup from:
*, and *
iMac G4s from April 24, 2004 can startup from:
* 10.4.6 labelled discs and
* discs only.
None of these discs are labelled update unless they are within 3 weeks of the operating system release. And would not work with update discs unless there was an operating system already installed on them.
August 31st 2004 and later iMacs were changed to G5 processors and in 2006, iMacs were changed to Intel processors.
Here's how to identify your iMac G4:
http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2643?viewlocale=en_US
That would tell us if you used the wrong retail discs.

Hi Everyone.  I have an old Mac Book with software updated to 10.6.8.  I have saved a ton of emails in my inbox 'On My Mac'.  There are so many it is slowing down my computer.  Where do I find the folder with all the emails so I can cut and paste them to an external hard drive? Pls.help.  Tks.

Depending on which email client software you use
the files should be in 'your home folder' library, esp.
if you use Mail application.... ~/Library/Mail
Since you don't specify what mail application,
that would most be associated with the file.
I notice there are some items to the right of your post
where it says "more like this' so that may be worth a
look to see if similar issues were answered. Also, the
Help viewer in your system is a searchable database.
Seems that google also brings up fair information, too.
Do you have a complete bootable clone of your entire
Mac system on an externally enclosed hard disk drive?
    Good luck & happy computing!

    Which iBook do you have?
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1772?viewlocale=en_US
Which version of the OS is installed, and which version are you trying to install?
You could try starting up with Startup Manager and see if it will allow you to select the OS X install disc as the startup disk. If so, maybe you can proceed from there. I would recommend repairing the hard drive first since you are evidently having a bit of a problem with it.

  • IMac crashed & on reboot I get the folder with a question mark

This happened last night when I went downstairs to put my computer to sleep, it was frozen. On reboot, I would get the chime, but not the apple logo—just the gray screen. Finally, after a minute or two, the folder with a question mark appeared. I tried resetting my PRAM and that didn't seem to work. I tried rebooting from the install disk to repair permissions, but my volume wouldn't even mount. It wasn't there.
Since this was 10:30 at night, I just went to sleep and when I woke up this morning, I turned it on just to see what would happen and lo & behold, it turns on, apple logo appears and ultimately takes me to my login screen. Needless to say, I was thrilled.
However, when I went to login on either my account or my husband's account, neither of our passwords will work now.
I have tried everything—typing the letters one by one. Nothing. How on earth am I supposed to login now? I'm afraid of restarting for fear of that infamous folder with the question mark appearing.
Any suggestions on how I could possibly login? Not only that, why are our passwords no longer working? Our names and avatars show up (they're custom avatars), so something is showing up on my HD, but why don't our passwords work? Weird.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
Oh, my specs are below and the only thing that I have done differently is I upgraded to v10.5.6 a few days ago. Otherwise, this never happens. No, I have not installed new RAM or anything like that.
    Thanks!!!
    Suzanne

Thank you so much for your replies, but I wanted to give you a heads up.
After speaking with tech support yesterday morning, and trying to verify disk via install disk, it was recommended that I bring my computer into Apple to have my HD replaced. I took it to the Genius Bar yesterday and yup, I need my HD replaced. Pain in the butt, but oh well, it could have been worse.
I pretty much back up all of my work (I'm a graphic designer) on a regular basis, but hadn't backed up my recent iTunes purchases, which I was told yesterday I could easily transfer from my iPod back to my "new" iMac—since they're purchased from iTunes. What a relief.
I guess the only thing that's a pain is pretty much all of my bookmarked websites (and there were a lot) and my photos, which I believe for the most part, were backed up.
Regardless, a lesson learned—never take advantage of the fact that your computer is what you think brand new (less than a year and a half old), and thinking it won't die, because you never know. This guy that was sitting next to me at the GB had a brand new MacBook Pro and it died after one week. Ouch!
I am going out right now and purchasing an external HD and having Time Machine back up on a regular basis. What a pain, but a harsh lesson learned.
    Thank goodness for Apple Care.

Not sure if I'm following you. I have 4 hard drives installed on my Mac Pro. I had a RAID 5 configured and functional for about 5 months. My battery died on the RAID card. I replaced the battery, seated the RAID card back in the slot I removed it from. When I booted to the USB drive to look in the RAID utility, I could see the battery is charged but my volumes are not showing.
The drives don't show in disk Utility. I built the RAID with the RAID Utility and they did show there. I have a early 2008 Mac Pro, Mavricks OS running Mac Server

Hi. I clicked some snaps from my iphone and post that without copying it i restored the iphone with all apps etc available from the backup taken. How do i get back the photos which were clicked earlier. Is there a way to get it back?? Please help

Yes i had not taken back up before restoring it. However i was just going through some links on the net and there is a software available for MAC to retrieve such lost data. But the point is will the said software work on iphone as the OS is not MAC..
Will have to give a try to this. If successful will share it with all. Anyone else has any idea about this please so share.

  • Macbook has the folder with flashing question mark

Yesterday as I was watching Netflix my Mac froze. I was skipping around an episode and then started opening a folder to do something else while it loaded and then it just froze. I thought maybe I was clicking on too many things at once or whatever and it got screwed up a bit so I closed it for a minute or two. When I opened it back up it had a (light) blue screen that wouldn't go away so I shut it down with the power button. Then when I turned it back it just had a white/gray screen for like a minute before the folder with the flashing question marked appeared.
I've googled possible solutions but nothing seems to work. It won't boot up in safemode. One answer suggested trying to do comm-opt-P-R (can't remember what that was trying to do) and that didn't work. The screen would just go black and then start up over and over. When I just press the opt-key it takes me straight to Internet recovery. However, none of the options available work. I don't have the TimeMachine thing, I don't have a disk to reload the Lion software, and there's nothing to click on at all in the disk utility. All that's available in that is a disk0 and the Mac OS X Base System and I can't click on First Aid/Erase/Partition/Restore. I've opened up the startup disk and there's nothing that shows up.
Is there something else I can try at home or should I just go ahead to the apple store? My Mac is under a year old still, but I spilled soda on it back in like October and had to get all the parts replaced so I don't know if that would do anything to the warranty....And if something does have to get replaced will I lose all my stuff? It was bad enough losing four months worth of data, I don't want to lose seven.
    Thanks for any help.

As long as the parts were replaced by someone authorized to do the repairs, you should still be fine. This error indicates that they computer isn't able to find a disk to boot to.
The "disk" to reload Lion is that internet recovery (also can be launched from command + r).
Seeing as how you don't have the startupdisk in Disk Utility, I would recommend getting it into a store to see why that drive isn't detected. It could be something as simple as a loose SATA cable, or as catastrophic as complete hard drive failure. While you're at the store, I'd look into investing in an external drive to start running Time Machine...

  • I had this problem with the folder with the question mark in it

hello guys, so i had this problem with the folder with the question mark in it and now i just keep the options button pressed till it shows me the option to boot and so how can i get that solved and my mac can just boot normally and something else is that i press on system preferences and nothing happens it basicly does not exist so if you guys could help me it would be great
    <Re-Titled By Host>

It sounds like either the system on your disk drive is corrupt or the disk drive died.
Assuming the information in your profile is correct then boot from the install DVD for you MBP. From there you should be able to run Disk Utility to check out the disk drive.

  • I renamed the folder with the little house as its icon, and now I'm screwed

    Here are the details:
    * I am running the latest update to 10.4
    * I changed the name of the folder with the little house as its icon. I changed it in the sidebar to the finder window. I changed the folder's name from it's original name to a new name, which is the name of my computer.
    * As soon as I did so, I started experiencing problems. I was using Azureus to download something (legally, of course) and I started getting popup warnings stating that the save location could not be located.
    * I then tried to open up my address book, which was now empty.
    * At this point, I became pretty sure that I messed up the...how you say...references for all my programs. In other words, my address book looks in "x" location for its addresses. My iPhoto looks in "x" location for the pictures and library files, etc.
    * I said to myself, "oh crap, look what I did" and attempted to change the folder with the little house as its icon from its current name back to the original. Unfortunately, it would not let me, and informed me that name was already in use.
    * I then said, "oh crap" and logged out of the account. I forget what my thinking was in doing this.
    * When I got to the log in screen, it gave me 4 options. There are two administrators' accounts; one I cannot access and my usual computer name. I logged into the latter, as usual.
    * When logged back in, nothing was as it should be. My desktop picture was gone, my desktop folders were gone. My dock was positioned at the bottom of the screen and was not hiding. Also, the little house went back to the original name. My program to automatically startup the Dashboard did not kick in. I clicked on iTunes and it wanted me to click through all the user' agreement set up options. When I opened up iPhoto I canceled the pop up window that was offered and found that my iPhoto library, which usually has 4000+ pictures, was empty. I opened up "Comic Life," and it asked me to register. I then looked in the finder to see if I could find a document for work. I clicked on the documents folder in the sidebar, and everything showed up. I then tried to do a search, but the files could not be located. I even visually verified the files where there, but neither spotlight or the finder search could locate them. If I clicked on a file, it opens, even though I cannot "search" for it. I've even tried to click on the actual folder and do a specific search, and receive nada.
*I've located all of the documents/library/etc. under "Macintosh HD/users/*current name of little house icon*, but it appears as just a regular folder.
So...there it is. I know I've screwed up my paths, but am unsure how to restore the computer to how it was. If there is no restore function, I am also unsure how to make it so my programs recognize the original library, etc.

EDIT: Welcome to Apple Discussions. Didn't notice you just joined. In case you don't know the message I left is a "link" just click on it. Sorry to be basic but I don't your level of skills.

My newest Mac just did the same "folder of death" dance. It's too late for you now, but you might consider a passport backup drive. You can get 2&3 T-bytes now fairly reasonably priced. A given with computers is they will crash, just a question of how bad and when, so you can be prepared for the next time.

  • Why do I get a folder with a question mark on bootup

why do I get a folder with a question mark on bootup
my daughters Mac and she doesn't remember which osX version she had.
can't seem to get past that flashing folder with a ? in it

A flashing question mark at boot means no start up drive can be found. Solutions vary based on what OS is installed.
Try the command and r keys held down at restart to see if it enters "recovery" mode. Use the Disk Utility to find out more about the drive.

  • Getting flashing folder with ? When starting up

Getting flashing folder with ? When booting up

The flashing folder with a question mark means that your computer can't recognize the hard drive. This could either mean that your hard drive is dead or it just isn't connected to the actual computer.
You can first try pressing the option key immediately after pressing the power button to go into startup manager. There you can choose your startup disk. If it still doesn't work (like it didn't for me) you can check to see if the problem is in the hard drive or the cable by inserting the installation dvd and re-install. Go into disk utlility and If it's unmounted, than the hdd most likely dead. If there's no hard drive icon at all, there's a good chance it's the cable.
Alternatively, you can open up the back, connect the hard drive to a different computer, and test to see if it's working. If it is, than all you only need is a hard drive connector cable ($20-60), but if it isn't then you need to get a new hard drive (about $90~$300)
Honestly, your best bet is to go to the Apple website and schedule an appointment for the genius bar where they'll do all the testing and replacing. It's actually cheaper (and faster) than doing it yourself because they usually don't charge you for a labour fee, and you don't have to wait or pay for shipping if you're ordering the parts online. I got mine replaced for about $20 and it was done in 10 min. If you're replacing the hard drive though, you may want to take the oppurtunity to upgrade to a better hard drive. Here's a guide on how to replace it yourself: http://www.ifixit.com/Guide/Installing-MacBook-Pro-13-Inch-Unibody-Late-2011-Har d-Drive/7656/1
