HELP! I lost all my contacts overnight/apple rep had me do restore/now gone

I am using the IPhone 3G. I had approx 400 contacts on my phone and about 600 songs on my 16GB IPhone. Last night, I synced my phone, all was fine. This morning, the summary page on ITunes showed that all my music was gone, all of my ringtones were gone, and I had 7.83 of "other" in orange. Spoke with Apple rep, couldn't figure it out, so she had me do a system restore as I had always synced my contacts to Windows Contacts. When we did the system restore, I checked contacts, and they were ALL gone. She had me go to Windows Contacts program and it was empty (?). Then, I remembered that I had synced all of my contacts with my Facebook account and you could link the two. I tried syncing my Facebook contacts with my IPhone contacts and alhough it says it's syncing, when I check my Iphone, my contacts are still missing. Any thoughts? And one final odd thing...the apple rep had me check last "sync" and said we could do a restore from a previous sync, but for some strange reason, there was only one...the one we did right before we deleted everything. We tried using that as a last ditch effort and even utilizing that one sync did not work, but it should have. I'm lost at this point, and don't know what to do...Someone please HELP??

As a workaround if you have a GMail account or get one you could try syncing with Google Contacts as described in this thread here then sync your iPhone with Google as described here

  • Does the iphone 4 work with Ford SYNC?  I recently lost all my contacts and think it had something to do with SYNC.  Any suggestions?

Anybody else had problems with Ford SYNC and iphone 4?
Lost all my contacts.  Any way to recover them if they haven't been backed up?

The complaints I've heard most are due to the fact that the iPhone will not let you use the sync system to read and compose text messages, etc. I vaguely recall somthing about address books not syncing properly, but I've never heard of the sync system wiping the address book on the phone. It shouldn't be possible as the iPhone only supports PBAP for contact syncing, which is one way.
In any event, if the contacts were not synced to something and have been lost, there is no way to recover them, no matter what it was that wiped them.

  • HT4859 lost all wifes contacts when i updated iphone4 on my computer now sehe has my contact can get contacts back

    Anyone able to help

    Try:
    - iOS: Not responding or does not turn on
    - Also try DFU mode after try recovery mode
How to put iPod touch / iPhone into DFU mode « Karthik's scribblings
    - If not successful and you can't fully turn the iOS device fully off, let the battery fully drain. After charging for an least an hour try the above again.
    - Try another cable
    - Try on another computer
    - If still not successful that usually indicates a hardware problem and an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store is in order.

My contacts are back.  Now when I go to 'messages' and open that, all my im's are there but they are by number and not by the names they used to be.  Do you know how to restore the names to what is was previously or do I need to go through each one and name it again?

    Hello 6underwood,
Thanks for using Apple Support Communities.
For more information on this, take a look at:
    iOS: Troubleshooting car stereo connections
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS3581
If you are experiencing difficulties with the connection between your stereo and device, disconnect the device, and then power cycle the stereo and your iPhone, iPod touch, or iPad. When the Home screen reappears, reconnect your device. If you cannot power cycle the stereo, turn the car off and then back on to allow the stereo to power off.
    Best of luck,
    Mario

Help me please..I lost all my contacts when i sync. it with google contacts ..they completely gone from iphone and my gmail account ..how can i get them back? please help

Its a easy fix,it will take too much time to type out all of the steps,
Check your email account. see if they are their, You can then import them on your DAV card, The best thing to is add them to icoud then they will be safe.
Apple support can talk you through it.

  • My husband and I both have iphones and share the same apple id. Everything was working fine until I synced his phone which lost all his contacts and pictures and gave him my info. I then used verizon's contact retreival app and got his contacts back

My husband and I both have iphones and everything was ok until I synced his phone and lost all his contacts and pixs. I downloaded verizon's contact retreival app and got his contacts back but now his contacts keep overwriting mine. I can sync my phone and get my contacts back but within a few hours, his show up again. We use the same apple id for purchases. What can I do?

Are you sharing the same iCloud account (in Settings>iCloud)?  And do you both have Contacts turned to On in Settings>iCloud?

The "system" performed as designed. All devices syncing to one iCloud account are kept in common sync. The idea is that all such devices belong to one user. Different users should have different iCloud accounts.  Once your contacts were edited, all devices were updated as well and subsequent backups (from yours and her device) reflected the changed contacts (and any other data that may have been edited like calendars). Your first task is to change your daughter over to a new account before she makes other changes.
The only way I see for getting back contacts is to restore them from a time machine backup, assuming you also have a Mac included in the account which syncs the contacts. However, I'm not sure whether time machine includes contacts from iCloud along with those that are local, "on my Mac".
Otherwise the deleted contacts are gone.

  • Lost all my contacts in Mac address book.  Tried syncing my iPhone/iPad contacts to Mac is not working.  Please help

Lost all my contacts in Mac address book.  Tried syncing my iPhone/iPad contacts to Mac via iTunes and is not working.  Please help

    Welcome to the Apple Community.
Unless you have the contacts backed up somewhere, you won't be able to restore them.
You and your son should have your own iCloud accounts then you can keep your own contacts and calendars etc and avoid deleting each others.

If you are saying that you both have iCloud accounts and use the same icloud ID, then yes, the contacts will be deleted.  The idea is that all devices using the same icloud ID are kept in sync.  You need to use different IDs.  You can keep the same iTunes ID so you can share the songs and apps.  But use different icloud IDs.

Something in your backup may be corrupt. Try wiping it and setting it up as a new device, then sync your apps, data and media back to it from iTunes. DO NOT resotre from your backup. If the problem is contained in the backup, it will bring it right back again if you restore.

  • Please help!! I lost all my contacts on iphone after I sync'd

    hey guys,
This afternoon I sync'd my phone to move some new downloaded songs, I pulled my phone off the docking station and I lost all my contacts.
please tell me they are somewhere in itunes. I have no idea how to move them back.
    anyone have any ideas.

    Hello miwung,
roaminggnome is correct in that you should be syncing your contacts with whatever contact management software you are using on your computer.
You can sync contacts with Windows Contacts, which comes pre-installed with Vista.
To sync both contacts and calendars you'll need either Outlook 2003 or Outlook 2007. All of these programs need to be opened and setup (at least create one contact) prior to syncing per:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1347
If the contact information is in one of those programs, the content should be synced back to the iPhone the next time you sync.
If you weren't syncing to one of those programs. It is possible that the contacts may be in your iTunes backup.
If you haven't tried another sync since you noticed the issue, leave the iPhone disconnected from the PC for now.
    Open iTunes.
Open Preferences from the Edit Menu.
    Click on the Devices tab.
Check the list of backups. If there is one there that corresponds to the time when you last synced with your contacts on the iPhone, and the sync was not interrupted in progress, it may contain the contacts.
If you tried reconnecting and re-syncing after you noticed the contacts issue, the backup may not contain any recoverable data.
While you're in the Preferences, put a check in the "Disable Automatic syncing for iPods and iPhones."
    Connect the iPhone.
Right-click on the iPhone under Devices and choose "Restore from Backup."
If the contacts are restored, make sure you sync them to a contact management program from now on -- and you may want to check with that program's website on how to backup the data in the program as well.
    Good Luck,
    Charles H.
