  • Help!!! Administrator password not accepted.

    Hi to all,
just a minor problem, since recently updating to 10.4.7 my beautiful machine asks me for an administrator password, which it will not accept.
i have tried the usual roots: - System Pref/Accounts change password. Also booting up from the Tiger install disk and selecting <Reset Password> both ways accept the original password and the change, but then will not authenticate afterwards...
Any ideas guys? I'm really stuck and need a solution fast.
    Any help is much appreciated,
    Thanks.
    Danny.
iMac 1.83 GHz 512 GB RAM Intel   Mac OS X (10.4.7)   iPod 5G which will not work without password!

    Hello,
I am having exactly this same problem on an iMac (OS 10.4) that had a previous owner. They deleted all of their files, and maybe did something to the permissions. Anyhow, I have tried several times to change the administrator password using the install disk, and everything seems fine until I try to unlock a lock or do something else that requires administrator privileges. It will not accept the new password. If I try to change the administrator password, it will not take the "old" password (which I had just set using the install disk). I cannot create a new admin user because I can't change the lock in Accounts.
I looked at the console log, and it has messages about problems authenticating related to my numerous attempts and failures.
I have looked at other discussions here, and not found anything that helps.
Here's something strange: when I look at the keychain access utility, it says "login" instead of my login name.
Also, this computer has automatic login, so I have never logged in with a password. Could this be the problem? I have thought of logging out, and then trying to log back in with newly set password, but I'm afraid of being locked out of the computer altogether.
Thanks in advance for any suggestions!
    Susan

  • Lost my administration password. What can I do ?

    Hello,
I have a new IBook since Christmas. I did choose an administrative password, but it seems I typed it wrong : I cannot find it any more. I'm surprised because the hint question I left is very clear, but well, I guess it can happen. Of course, I tried all the ortograph versions I could think of and none works.
    How can I re-initiate this password ?
    Thanks in advance
    Lise

    Hi
    Thanks for your answer !
I checked on the article and selected the 'change administration password' paragraph. I followed the instructions, but it seems the CD does not launch itself automatically as it should. What should I do ? I did not have to install the OS the first time, it was already installed.
I also checked if it was an AZERTY/QWERTY keyboard problem but it's not. I also tried any variations that came into my mind with the Shift button on and off but it does not work.

  • LOST LDAP Administrator Password

So what do you do when you loose or forget your LDAP Administrator password....don't ask how...

    *enter King Kong*
    <pre class=command>mkpassdb -setpassword <slot ID>
    # where Slot-ID is second value of AuthenticationAuthority in users LDAP entry</pre>see man mkpassdb
mkpassdb actually is for directly manipulation of PasswordServer.
    You will probably need:
    <pre class=command>mkpassdb -dump</pre>HTH

  • Help Me Please! Administrator Password Help!!!! Pleaseeeeeee!!!

+*I just got this MacBook laptop and when I tried to make a password to login, it asks me my old password (but I tried that several times it does not seem to work). Mac Help thing suggests to put the Install CD and reset it or something....
But, does reinstalling erase the applications you put in the computer? as in iWork? or does reinstalling deletes your saved stuff?
And, P.S. is reinstalling bad? (is the disc reusable?)
Does, reinstalling cause any CHANGE to your computer?
    Please, kindly someone help me!!
Thanks in advance. (I just had it for three days or so... I love it...but I would like to solve this problem regarding the administrator's username and password thing. (Because software updating and all seems to need this password too so..
    +*

Roam's advice will do the trick but I am puzzled. Why do you need to MAKE a password to log in? If you bought the device new you would have set up a password when you booted and thus created the first user. I do hope you set a password then and did not decide you 'could not be bothered by passwords'.
If you bought the box second hand there may be users and passwords already there in which case Roam's advice will allow you to alter them. It is not a good thing to accept someone else's users and passwords. They know the passwords then and can get into the machine, and more to the point there could be all sorts of stuff on the HD that could cause a problem. Advice is to do an erase and install but that is another story. As said you are not to proceed to re-install you just go through the first few steps of the routine to a particular app to re-set passwords. Re-installing is a clart as it needs, if done in a particular way, that you re enter application keys and other settings. It does not make the HD un useable. It is normally recommended to make a bootable backup of the whole HD before re-installing the wholeOS.

  • Lost system administrator password

I've lost the password for account "System Administrator".
How can I reset the "S A" account password?  Googling finds ways to reset root or non-admin passwords, but no mention of the account called System Administrator.
I have root / root password.  I tried booting from the install disk and using reset password, but the list of accounts it brings up does not include System Administrator.  (Well there is one called S A, but it also says "root" and the online tips say do not reset this since it really is root.)
Since I have root access, it isn't truly critical to get the SA password, but it would be nice.
    Any suggestions?

Well, here's what confuses me.  Per this site (and others), when using install disk to do "Reset Password", I am really resetting the root password.  But there's a "System Administrator" entry in my account list, and the implication is that this is not the root account.
    http://www.macosxtips.co.uk/index_files/reset-lost-os-x-account-password.php
    Quote:
    >> Using install disk, "Restart the computer, and hold the C key as it starts up ...
    >> Be careful not to select System Administrator, as this is actually the root user,
    >> not the administrator account on your Mac."
Are these descriptions wrong?  I know the root password, and using that when trying to login using the "S..A.." acount doesn't work.  The web page is 4 years old - is it out of date?

  • Lost/forgotten administrator password

I have just bought a new imac and given my old one to my son. He reinstalled Leopard and has got everything up and running but whenever it asks for the administrator name and password it doesn't accept anything we put in.
We have tried my old name and password from before I gave it to him and we have tried his name and password from the account he has set up - which doesn't seem to be an administrator account. He is adamant that he hasn't changed any other passwords or anything but we don't know what to do now. If we try and re-install Leopard again it asks for the administrator name and password !
Is there anything we are missing like a start up default name and password (we have tried 'admin' and 'admin' or failing that do we have to reformat the whole thing and rebuild it from scratch?
    Any thoughts welcome.
    Thanks
    David

Now that's exceedingly weird, A computer that won't start up from the install disk. Cobbyco, after trying Monty's suggestion, putting the install dvd in, turning the computer off, waiting a few seconds, then holding down the C key and pressing the power button, are you continuing to hold down the C key or letting go right away? I usually continue to hold down the c key at least til the screen lights up, that way I'm sure the install disk is the one starting the computer up. The more knowledgeable folks who have replied may think that's unnecessary, to hold the c key down that long, but it's just my own habit. Try it, might work for you too.

  • Lost Administrative Password and Have to update my flash player. How Can I get around this for updates?

Sure needing help here. I've lost my administrative password on my mac and have to update my adobe flash player. I've researched several, seemingly (to me) complicated ways around this. Does anyone have an easy solution.  Really need this back up and running! Thanks in advance.

This password prompt is presented by your operating system, and is intended to keep you from accidentally installing software.
If this is your personal machine and you don't need a password to log into the computer when it first starts up, you can probably leave the password blank and click OK to get past this prompt.  If this is your personal machine and your normal password isn't working, check to make sure that CAPS LOCK is off, and type the password carefully.
If this is your work machine and it's asking for an Administrator password, well, you'll need to have a conversation with your friendly IT person.
If you're still stumped, you may need to reset the password on your Mac:
