HELP ... I'm in the land of spinning beach balls !
Hello and thanks ahead of time for any posts to my problem.
I've been successfully working a slide show from stills in iMovie 4 (w/some titles, ken burns, music, etc.)
It's been going great.
I wish I had a security camera taping me so I know exactly what I did at the end....
I "saved as" to my second internal HD
This save took several min., afterward it seemed to close the movie down and reopen the saved one.
All is looking well....
but the movie was acting jerky, not smooth as it had been.
I deleted my trash (I figured I didn't need that stuff anymore)
I closed the movie and went to double check the original on start up drive, thinking I don't want to delete anything till I make sure the backup works.
I can't open the orgiinial.
I can't open the back up on the second drive.
I get the spinning beach ball if I double click on the icon, or if I navigate there from the iMovie start up screen.
... furthermore I found a lot of iMovie type stuff in my desktop trash can that I don't think I put there. I took all that stuff out and put it in a folder on my desktop.
I've worked hard on this project and even tried to back up my work as anyone should.

I went to apple menu-recent items clicked on my movie there and it opened!
I went staight to iDVD, composed the DVD and burned so I have copies for all family members.
My question is, when I go via the finder to one of my movie projects, I can't even single click on it and get info without getting a spinning beach ball. I have to force quit the finder every time
I'm trying to comfirm which project was the last one used, how much space, etc. ... can't do it!
Should I do a Save As to my second hard drive and trust it?
In the future, is there a way to set the default location where iMovieHD and IDVD save to? I'm trying to use my second HD instead of my startup.
Whats the archive project thing in IDVD?
Sorry for so many questions, I can use the applications fine, but I have guesse I have problems on 'managing" the applications

Spinning beach ball for 45-60 seconds, then fine
For several months now, I've had the spinning beach ball issue on my Macbook Pro. Within the first 5 minutes after boot up, the spinning beach ball will occur, seemingly at random (no specific app or action), for 45-60 seconds. While this happens, the system becomes completely unresponsive. But after this occurrence within the first five minutes after startup, it never happens again and everything is fine - until I reboot of course.
I am running Snow Leopard and this problem was happening before I installed Snow Leopard, so that's not it. But one thing I did do, which I am semi-convinced is the culprit, is I replaced my hard drive with a Seagate 500 mb Momentus drive. The actual model # is SEAST9500420AS. I don't know for sure, but that's around the time this issue first started. I know there is/was a spinning beach ball problem with the newer Macbook Pros and they were attributing it to the hard drive which just so happens to be the same hard drive I now have in my Macbook Pro. There was recently an EFI update that seemed to fix the problem for the newer models, but mine is the first generation right when they went to Intel chips (bought mine in April, 2006). Problem is, if it is my drive, this new EFI update that fixes the issue on the new models won't install on mine.
I also did a verify disk and repair disk permissions, but that was no help. Another thing I found going through the discussion groups was that the problem could happen because both the Macbook Pro and the Seagate drive have anti-shock technology that could conflict with one another. So if you disabled the anti-shock on the Macbook Pro, it might solve the problem as it seemed to for some folks out there. But I did that and it didn't help either.
I'm thinking it's my hard drive, but don't know how to fix it. But it could be something I haven't looked at yet or thought of. I've been trying everything the last several months with no luck and it's been driving me batty! What's really strange is it only happens once and always within the first 5 minutes after start up. Anybody have any suggestions? Thanks.I just finished doing lots of different tests to try to solve my problem. Didn't resolve it, but I did manage to eliminate some things and narrow it down further.
First I removed all my login items and restarted my computer. That didn't fix the problem.
So then I thought it might have something to do with Safari since that's one of the first things I open up when I start my computer and there are numerous reports in the discussions of spinning beach balls with Safari 4.0.3 which I have. So I purposely did not open Safari after startup. Problem still happened.
So then I thought maybe it has something to do with my internet connection. So I disconnected my internet connection and rebooted. Then I only opened programs that don't use online access. I leisurely opened up a program, did a few things in it, closed it, and then did the same thing with another program. Did some things with Finder. Purposely did not rush things. Waited 4-5 seconds after every operation's completion before executing another task. Never had more than one program open at any given time to eliminate any issue with two many resources open. You guessed it - the problem STILL happened. Not that it matters, but it happened when I hit Command-I on my hard drive icon to get the info pane. A fairly innocuous task. Froze up with the spinning beach ball for at least 45-50 seconds. Tried clicking a few other things while this was happening, but nothing. Once it freed up, a few things I clicked on previously suddenly became active and everything was fine again. Tried Command-I for a lot of different things with no problem. Response was instantaneous.
It pretty much happens 3-4 minutes into a session and then never happens again. And I think my test here eliminated several possibilities. Very frustrating. I hope this helps someone come up with a possible solution. Thanks. -
Spinning Beach Ball - Network Issue?

I know there have been posts on this over time but my particular question does not appear to have been answered. My apologies if I missed a response somewhere else in the forums. I'll try to keep it short.
Basically, a month or so ago I started getting the spinning beach ball in any application at various points of time. There was no rhyme or reason it seemed. It could happen when I have one application open, 5 applications open, it could happen in 5 five minutes or 2 hours later. Once the beachball started spinning, it wouldn't go away and it prevented me from using other apps as well, compelling me to do a manual shut down. I typically use only iPhoto, Safari, iDvd, Numbers and Mail. It could happen in any of them.
I've tried everything. Apple tech support had me do an archive and install - didn't work. I got Disk Warrior 4.2. Nope. I deleted plug-ins and did some other maintenance tasks etc., etc. but nothing worked.
Activity Monitor didn't seem to show anything alarming. Same with Console. Apple suggested I bring it into a tech at the local Apple Store. I did that and after 4 days of running their diagnostics, they could not replicate the 'hang' on the applications. That is, they found no problems with the Macbook - hardware or software.
Now I'm wondering (not being a computer savvy person I don't know if this is possible) if this is a wireless internet issue. Could my home network be a source of the application 'hang' (spinning beach ball) that I've experienced? It's the only thing I can think of that is different from my home computer set-up to the store. My router/modem is a SMC Gateway.
Any thoughts are really appreciated. Thanks so much for your brains on this!

After searching the forum for "spinning beach ball" related articles, finding few, perhaps missing the ones that would have been helpful, we'd like to submit the following situation to the expertise of this community.
Putting together video material on a PowerBook G4 with 1GB Ram and external HD LaCie FW800 300GB, and FCE 3.0. Individual shots appear correctly in the viewer; put together with In and Out points in the Timeline. Very simple editing - no effects, no filters, just putting one after the other.
When viewing the edit in the canvas (can be from 4' to 20'), the flow sometimes stops and after a couple of seconds a spinning beach ball appears. Have to Force Quit afterwards. Taught us to save before viewing in the Canvas.
The same edits, the timeline, exports to QuickTime with no problem, can be viewed in QuickTime, RealPlayer, etc. The combination of edits, 1 hour and 4 minutes, exports to QT with no problem, we are presently writing it to a DVD. But we'd really like to go back to the canvas to view and fine tune.
The SBB appear usually at the same locations. Some happen every time, others crop up and stay. We've made an install of FCE on a different machine, hoping it would reveal a machine dependant problem, but we have the SBB at the same locations.
What can we do ?
Thanks, Robert & GillWould recapturing be much of a problem? Just re-capture into a new project, no editing, and then see if that gives trouble. If so, try capturing each half only, separately into different new projects, to see whether the problem is linked to some frames in the footage. Or delete successively chunks of frames from a full capture and see if the problem disappears. More rigorously, (to avoid changing the length of the project when the length itself might be the source of the problem), delete chunks of frames and replace by copying and pasting other similar lengths. See if a different project of similar length does/does not give problems. (The "divide and conquer" approach.)

Spinning Beach Ball - no desktop icons
Today, while I was moving between Word and Safari, at some point I got the never-ending spinning beach ball of death. I eventually force quit and restarted. Everything came up but the desktop icons -- like my HD icon and the files on my desktop -- and the beach ball continues to spin and won't quit. I have restarted several times and it's always the same thing.
I can open software by going into the dock and even get online. However, if I try to use the Finder it won't let me and I am locked into the spinning ball. I read these forums and didn't see any problem identical to this with the spinning beach ball of death. I tried repairing the permissions and repaired the disk. I have 1 GB RAM so I think that's not the issue.

PowerBook G4 15" Mac OS X (10.4.5)I tried the things regarding deleting Finder preferences from the X Lab, but that didn't work.
I took my PowerBook into the Genius Bar tonight and the Genius took a look at it. He said sometimes too many files on the desktop or a corrupt file on the desktop can cause the Finder to not respond. I didn't have that many files on the desktop, but remembered downloading a PDF from an email shortly before the problem. He worked on it in the single user mode until he could access my desktop files. We deleted the PDF just for good measure. After he worked some other magical things having to do with my desktop folder and the permissions, and then repairing the permissions -- everything is working great. Whew.

Spinning Beach Ball/ Indexing Won't Complete
I turned on my Mac one morning, and as I opened programs, webpages ect. the spinning beach ball would appear, and my Mac would be momentarily frozen. This happened out of no where. I then noticed that the Spotlight indexing had not completed, and would remain at the same completion rate. Would this have anything to do with my Mac constantly freezing up(spinning beach ball), and if so, what can I do to fix it?

I have the Mac os 10.6.3. Its been great but the last 4 days iTunes has frozen up. On opening iTunes spinning beach ball starts up and the only way to close iTunes is to force quite. I have nothing plugged into iTunes and i have scand iTunes with mackeeper but nothing. I then uninstalled iTunes and started fresh//./././.// NO GOOD, keeps doing the same thing. HELP

Reinstalling OS X Without Erasing the Drive
Boot to the Recovery HD: Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
Reinstalling OS X Without Erasing the Drive
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the main menu. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions as follows.
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility and press the Continue button. After Disk Utility loads select the Macintosh HD entry from the the left side list. Click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If Disk Utility reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit Disk Utility and return to the main menu.
Reinstall OS X: Select Reinstall OS X and click on the Continue button.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.

I accidentally quit my CC on my Macbook pro and now the cloud icon is grayed out and every time I hover over it with the mouse I get the spinning beach ball of death on the icon. I have no idea how to open it because when I use spotlight search to open it it gives me a message saying "Creative Cloud is not open anymore" help!
Since you didn't include any pertinent info such as the Mac model and OS version you are running, here is some general information:
Mac OS X: Gray screen appears during startup
Depending on which OS yours came with originally - and which OS you are now running - you would either need your original install disks - you can call Apple for replacements by giving them your serial number. Or you may be able to reinstall the OS by using recovery (again, depends on which model/which OS). -

I am running OSX Yosemite Version 10.10
My Mac Pro keeps re-booting. Last year I had to replace my graphics card. My original card was the ATI Radeon HD 2600 XT 255MB, and that is what I have now. At this precise moment my Mac Pro is running perfectly, except that it is slow and the spinning beach-ball keeps appearing. I have managed to do some work with the disk utilities, verifying, cleaning and partitioning. Some errors were found and when it was cleaned this seemed to help my Mac Pro to function properly. Although I am able to use my Mac Pro now, from day to day I still experience re-boot problems. Also quite unexpectedly my mac dictionary has an error, it closed itself down and will not open at all, I had the message to say that a report will be sent to Apple.
I have tried starting my computer with an external hard drive fitted via a USB cable, I use for back-ups. This worked and I was able to wipe my hard drive clear and replace all info from the back up I had done only a few days ago.
This worked for a few days and then the same problem started again.
I am beginning to wonder if I need to buy a new hard drive.

Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)

Each message in the log begins with the date and time when it was entered. Scroll back to the time you noted above.
Select the messages entered from then until the end of the episode, or until they start to repeat, whichever comes first.
Copy the messages to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message by pressing command-V.
The log contains a vast amount of information, almost all of it useless for solving any particular problem. When posting a log extract, be selective. A few dozen lines are almost always more than enough.
Please don't indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.

I have no idea why this is happening. I normally use Word, Excel, Google Chrome and sometimes Photoshop when using my computer and then one day it started getting super slow. This is my etrecheck.
Computer running slow all of the sudden. Getting spinning beach ball of death through all applications all the time. Computer losing charge while not plugged in.

Thanks for taking the time to reply. The beachball is literally every other minute. I tried to take the time to it's most basic second and it was 4:01:04 - I am currently backpacking in Laos with my bf and we are travel writers/photographers and he is helping me get this info.
We didn't know what anonymyze meant but we tried to make sure you couldn't see my name. So far the spinning beach ball has occurred 4 times in just writing these 4 lines.
We tried to make sure we didn't overwhelm you with the 4000 lines or more but just did a couple days worth of text. Thanks again for your time.

Why can't I download PDF files, and why does the "spinning beach ball" keep showing up?
I have a late 2008 iMac, 3.06 GHz Core 2 Duo, 4 GB 800 MHz DDR2 SDRAM, 500 Gig Hardrive, and I'm using OS X 10.6.8. In addition, there are three external drives - 750 G Maxtor, 1T Maxtor, and 1T LaCie for Time Machine. There are only 20 Gigs left of space on the internal hard drive. The two problems I continue to have are that PDF files are not visible when I click on the download link, and I keep seeing the "spinning beach ball" when I'm trying to work with photos in iPhoto '09 or Lightroom 4.1. Sometimes it seems like the system is waiting for the 750 G external drive to activate before the beach ball disappears. Can anyone tell me what's going on?

Open Activity Monitor in Applications>Utilities, select All Processes & sort on CPU%, any indications there?
How much RAM & free space do you have also, click on the Memory & Disk Usage Tabs.
Open Console in Utilities & see if there are any clues or repeating messages when this happens.
In the Memory tab, are there a lot of Pageouts? -
The movies from my Iphone 5 are not coming across on Apple TV. The little spinning beach ball appears like it is thinking. It use to work fine but quick working a month ago. I mirror from my phone to the Apple TV. Still images and everything I do on the phone is mirrored on to the TV except when I want to show a YouTube video or any video and then the screen on the phone and the TV screen go black and the spinning beach ball appears. The videos open right up on the phone if I do not have mirroring on and going through the Apple TV. I just downloaded the latest update to the phone it did not fix the problem. Please help. How I fixed the Spinning Beach Ball Issue
Ok, like many of you, I was also getting iTunes to hang when plugging in my shuffle, and it would just sit with the spinning beach ball. Even after an hour, it was still frozen. Well, I just fixed mine.
I went to check the Library File to see if it was too large or something, and I found my Music folder wouldn't open, and when it did it showed 0 items, yet iTunes was still playing songs. So I ran TechTool Deluxe on it (it came with your APP if you bought one). Anyway, it found Volume errors on the music drive. So I backed up the music folder to another drive, and let TechTool repair the errors. When it was done, I ran it again, no errors. I then opened iTunes, plugged in my shuffle, and it instantly grabbed new songs via Autofill and sync'd. So, I think the iTunes installer is causing errors to the volume, which is causing the hang ups. TechTool was able to fix the errors, and now iTunes runs fine. Hopefully that will help a few of you get yours working again.
For the record, I store my music on my secondary internal drive, and keep the library in my user folder on the boot drive. After running the fix, everything appears to be just fine, and from what I can tell I lost no data.I hope your Tech Tool Deluxe disk was not version 3.0.3 or earlier. If you used a version of Tech Tool that was incompatible with Tiger, you may have corrupted your harddrive.

Print error - there was a problem connecting to the server - spinning beach ball
This has happened pre-yosemite and since. It used to only happen at home but now also happens at work. Every time I try to print, I get a spinning beach ball and a long delay until I get an error message saying there was a problem connecting to the server. At home, after clicking OK, I get a second spinning beach ball session with same error. Once I click OK second time, I get print window and can print. At work, it's only one session of spinning beach ball. The office problem occurred after upgrading to yosemite. I've deleted and added the printers without resolution. I've repaired permissions. The home problem has been going on for at least a year, probably a couple. Using a macbook pro.
There are many possible causes for this issue, and it may be very hard to resolve without wiping your account clean of everything except documents as a last resort. Please take each of the following steps that you haven't already tried. Back up all data before making any changes.
If you get the alert in the login screen before you log in, stop here and ask for instructions.
Step 1
If you get the alert as soon as you log in, it's probably caused by one of your login items or by software that otherwise loads at startup or login. Ask if you need help identifying it. Known offenders are "1Password" and "Adobe Resource Synchronizer."
Step 2
If there's an icon representing the server in the sidebar of a Finder window, hold down the command key and drag it out.
Step 3
In the Finder, press the key combination command-K or select
Go ▹ Go to Server...
from the menu bar. In the upper right corner of the window that opens is a Recent Servers popup menu represented by a clock icon. From that menu, select
Clear Recent Servers…
and confirm. Test.
Step 4
Open the Printers & Scanners pane in System Preferences and delete any network devices you no longer use. If in doubt, delete them all and add back the ones you want.
Step 5
Triple-click anywhere in the line below on this page to select it, then copy the text to the Clipboard by pressing command-C:

In the Finder, select
Go ▹ Go to Folder...
from the menu bar and paste into the box that opens by pressing command-V. You won't see what you pasted because a line break is included. Press return. A folder may open. If it does, move the contents to the Desktop, or to a new folder on the Desktop. Log out and log back in. Test. If there's no change, put the items you moved back where they were and continue.
Step 6
Open the folder
~/Library/Preferences
as in Step 5 and move the file named "loginwindow.plist" items in that folder to the Trash, if it exists (it may not.)
Log out and back in again, and test.
Step 7
Other possible causes are references in the iPhoto, iTunes, or iMovie library pointing to the server, bookmarks in the Preview application, and PDF files created by Adobe Acrobat with embedded scripts.
Try rebuilding the iPhoto library, if applicable.
Step 8
Resources such as images or sounds stored on the server may have been added to various applications. Examples would be pictures added to Contacts and custom sounds added to Mail. The range of possibilites here is practically infinite, so I can't be more specific. You might get a hint by launching the Console application and looking for error messages that appear at the same time as the alerts.
Step 9
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed to start up. Start up in safe mode. Test. After testing, restart as usual (not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem.
Note: If FileVault is enabled in OS X 10.9 or earlier, or if a firmware password is set, or if the startup volume is a Fusion Drive or a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Step 10
Triple-click the line below to select it:
/System/Library/CoreServices/Directory Utility.app
Rght-click or control-click the highlighted text and select
Services ▹ Open
from the contextual menu.* The application Directory Utility will open.
In the Directory Utility window, select the Directory Editor tool in the toolbar. Select Mounts from the Viewing menu in the toolbar, and/Local/Default from the node menu, if not already selected. On the right is a list of names and values. By default, the list is empty. If it's not empty, post a screenshot of the window and stop here.
*If you don't see the contextual menu item, copy the selected text to the Clipboard (command-C). Open a TextEdit window and paste into it (command-V). Select the line you just pasted and continue as above.
Step 11
Open the following file as you did in the last step:

It will open in a TextEdit window. The contents should be exactly this:
