Help! I'm stuck in an erase/reinstall of Panther!

Hi, I'm having some trouble. My computer was having some issues, and a mac store genius recommended that I reformat my HD. I've erased my HD after backing everything up on my external HD. I inserted my OS install disc, but it's damaged and the install keeps freezing up. I have an older install disc from a friends computer, same model, about a year older though. I can't eject the disc, because my only startup disc options are the install disc and a network location, which I don't have. HELP! Thank you so much.

Hi Brandon!
Have you contacted Apple Support, to see if your original discs could be replaced, for a fee smaller that the original purchase prce?
Tiger is available for purchase at The Apple Store (U.S.).
Panther, is no longer available directly from the Apple Online Store, as Tiger 10.4.x is the most up to date OS.
If you know what to look for, a Full Retail Version, of the Panther Install CDs, or a Full Retail Version, of the Tiger Install DVD, can also be purchased rather inexpensively, at some online Apple retailers, Amazon, eBay, AppleRescue, FastMac, etc.
As you have discovered, be sure not to purchase grey, upgrade or machine specific CDs or DVDs.
Panther is only on CDs, not DVDs.
Unless purchased from AppleRescue, the discs should look exactly like the images in the above links, and not say Upgrade on them.

Software Update, Upgrade: What's The Difference?
I will assume that at one time, you had a sucessful install of OS X, so this step probably has already been done.
Before upgrading to any OS X version, check to see if your Mac needs a Firmware Update.
If one is required, you must start the computer from a Mac OS 8 or Mac OS 9 System Folder on the computer's hard disk, not from a CD, in order to install it.
If Panther 10.3.x is re-installed, you can again use the 10.3.9 Combo Update, to upgrade to the final version.
If your Mac meets the Tiger System Requirements, and you purchase and install that, then use the PPC 10.4.9 Combo Update, to upgrade to the current version.

  • REstoring settings after erase & reinstall

I had to do an erase & reinstall on my Mac to clear up some problems. Fortunately, I have a valid Time Machine backup. How can I restore my bookmarks and extensions from the backup and avoid having to laboriously re-install them one-by-one? Thanks.

  • Need to Erase/Reinstall After Failed Migration

Hi! I attempted to do a transfer via Migration Assistant yesterday from my 2009 MacBook Pro to my new MacBook Pro and it failed (it stalled for 10 hours on "Less Than a Minute Remaining..."
I powered off the new machine and quit MA on the old one. I ran Disk Repair and Repair Permissions on the old machine and everything checks out fine.
I need to restart the migration ... what steps do I need to take to erase/reinstall? The new machine shows that ALL of the date was transferred, but I shouldn't trust that - right?
From Disk Utility do I choose Erase>Mac OS Extended (Journaled)? And then wait for it to erase and then go where to reformat to GUID before doing the migration? And when I start the migration, will I need to first re-install the system software? One more question ... my old machine has 10.5.8 running, is that a problem??
I REALLY appreciate any help you can offer!! I'm crunched for time and need to get this done!

I'm not sure who your communication is directed to but I think it's me. Please reply to the person you're intending your communication to go to. If you want to start all over here are some instructions:
    1. First Backup!!!! This is critical just in case and disconnect any peripherals!
    2. Insert the Mac OS X Install DVD and click the icon that says *Install Mac OS X.app*
    3. Click Utilities then click Restart enter the Name and Password
    4. After it restarts (this takes awhile because it's loading from the DVD) Choose the language then click Utilities menu then click *Disk Utility* then choose your HD (it will be called something like MacBook Pro) then click the *Erase tab* and make sure the format is set to Mac OS Extended (Journaled) then click Erase
    5. After it has reformatted the HD you can exit Disk Utility and continue with the installation, this will take about 30 minutes and it will walk you through the installation so it will think it's brand new and you can then use Setup Assistant to migrate all of your stuff from the old Mac.
    6. After the migration has been completed you will now want to install the data from the Applications Install DVD that came with the computer. Click Install Bundled Software.mpkg and follow the on-screen instructions. After that has fully installed you should be up and running with you new machine.

  • Both CS4 and PS6 are stuck on the eraser tool

They are both stuck on the eraser tool.
I have quit and reopened.  How is it possible that both programs have the same issue all of a sudden.
How do I make it work?
I have quit and reopened but nothing changes.
    I don't like PS6 and prefer to use CS4.
HELP, PLEASE!  I have a deadline and can't work.
    Thanks

    Hey jestinsinclairr,
Thanks for using Apple Support Communities.
After reviewing your post, it sounds like you had one issue and then got a second trying to resolve the first. A frustrating situation for sure. The first article linked has what to do if it is not powering on unless plugged in. The second article addresses the error you are receiving when trying to restore.

When starting Window XP on my laptop (which was connected, in the past, in a wi-fi network now no more available) appears immediatly this allert: "iTunes Helper was not installed correctly. Please reinstall iTunes. ERROR 7."
Reistallation of older or up to date  iTunes versions is impossible because: "Installation package iTunes.msi is located on a network resource not available" and because "It is impossible to remuove thew previous verson of iTunes. Impossible fto find the path."
    Someone can help me ???
    Thank,

Take a look at iTunes for Windows: "Error 7" message when opening iTunes. Perhaps your .NET Framework needs a repair.
For general advice see Troubleshooting issues with iTunes for Windows updates.
The steps in the second box are a guide to removing everything related to iTunes and then rebuilding it which is often a good starting point unless the symptoms indicate a more specific approach. Review the other boxes and the list of support documents further down the page in case one of them applies.
Your library should be unaffected by these steps but there is backup and recovery advice elsewhere in the user tip.

  • I have an ipod 2g , The keyboard won't work! Or at least some of it's letters and numbers won't. please help i'm stuck with emojis

i have an ippd touch 2g , a part of my keyboard won't work , i can type letters but i can't type numbers . please help i'm stuck with emojis keyboard

Try restarting the iPod by holding down the lock and home button together and then slide the power button to turn it off and then wait 10 seconds and start it up again. If it is not a reset issue then it may be a hardware issue. Is your iPod damaged or have you dropped it recently? If it is a hardware problem then you may not be able to fix it. If your iPod has multitasking options like the new iOS devices, close out the app and then try again, it should reset your device to letters instead of emojis.

  • How to replace home folder after yosemite erase-reinstall?

Hi, I did an erase-reinstall and then simply copied my backed-up home folder (administrator's home folder) back into the new home folder but this has not worked well. Can anyone tell me the correct procedure of how to restore the home folder. I have a Time Machine back-up from a previous online Yosemite install (not an erase-install) as well as a regular back-up on a separate drive. Can I fix this up (i.e. remove the whole current home folder and replace it properly) without doing another erase-install of yosemite? Many thanks, Barak

baltwo, out of interest, I just found this at:  http://www.theinstructional.com/guides/how-to-re-run-the-os-x-setup-assistant
How to Re-Run the OS X Setup Assistant
Under certain circumstances, it can be advantageous to re-run the Setup Assistant. Using some command-line trickery, we can do just this without having to erase and reinstall OS X...
    Option?

    (1) Download the Windows Installer CleanUp utility installer file (msicuu2.exe) from the following Major Geeks page (use one of the links under the "DOWNLOAD LOCATIONS" thingy on the Major Geeks page).
    http://majorgeeks.com/download.php?det=4459
Here's a screenshot showing the particular links on the page that you should be clicking:
After clicking one of the circled links, you should be taken to another page, and after a few seconds you should see a download dialog appear for the msicuu2.exe file. Here's a screenshot of what it looks like for me in Firefox:
Choose to Save the file. If the dialog box does not appear for you, click the link on the page that says "CLICK HERE IF IT DOES NOT". Here's a screenshot of the page with the relevant link circled:
When the dialog appears, choose to save the file.
    (2) Go to the Downloads area for your Web browser. Doubleclick the msicuu2.exe file and follow the prompts to install the Windows Installer CleanUp utility. (If you're on a Windows Vista or Windows 7 system and you get a Code 800A0046 error message when doubleclicking the msicuu2.exe file, try instead right-clicking on the msicuu2.exe file and selecting "Run as administrator".)
    (3) In your Start menu click All Programs and then click Windows Install Clean Up. The Windows Installer CleanUp utility window appears, listing software that is currently installed on your computer.
    (4) In the list of programs that appears in CleanUp, select any iTunes entries and click "Remove", as per the following screenshot:
    (5) Quit out of CleanUp, restart the PC and try another iTunes install. Does it go through properly this time?

  • When starting up after a erase/reinstall of Mac OS X 10.6 it will not accept any of my passwords/names

when starting up after a erase/reinstall of Mac OS X 10.6 it will not accept any of my passwords/names, I had just entered my info and clicked on "continue", the cube began to turn and froze, a translucent screen came over the whole window and request that I restart the computer, after doing so, I got the start up sound and a message saying that OS X was starting up and then the sign in window, but when I entered my info it kept shaking/rejecting it, only thing I can think is that could I have possibly entered my password wrong twice, don't know, I'm still scratching my head.

Do it again, I'm afraid. Be sure you set up the initial admin account with a proper password you can remember - all lowercase letters and numbers. No special characters or spaces except for the "_" underline character.
    Clean Install of Snow Leopard
Be sure to make a backup first because the following procedure will erase
the drive and everything on it.
         1. Boot the computer using the Snow Leopard Installer Disc or the Disc 1 that came
with your computer.  Insert the disc into the optical drive and restart the computer.
After the chime press and hold down the  "C" key.  Release the key when you see
a small spinning gear appear below the dark gray Apple logo.
         2. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue
button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu.
After DU loads select the hard drive entry from the left side list (mfgr.'s ID and drive
size.)  Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.  Set the number of
partitions to one (1) from the Partitions drop down menu, click on Options button
and select GUID, click on OK, then set the format type to MacOS Extended
(Journaled, if supported), then click on the Apply button.
         3. When the formatting has completed quit DU and return to the installer.  Proceed
with the OS X installation and follow the directions included with the installer.
         4. When the installation has completed your computer will Restart into the Setup
Assistant. Be sure you configure your initial admin account with the exact same
username and password that you used on your old drive. After you finish Setup
Assistant will complete the installation after which you will be running a fresh
install of OS X.  You can now begin the update process by opening Software
Update and installing all recommended updates to bring your installation current.
Download and install Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1.

  • Had to do a erase/reinstall on older iMac

I had to do an erase/reinstall on my older iMac. I reinstalled system 9.0.4 and then reinstalled Panther. Everything seemed to go fine. However when I went back from OSX to 9.0 I am unable to start up again in OSX. I don't see it as a choice in my startup preferences in 9.0
How can I return to OSX?

The start up manager in some older version of the OS didn't see OSX properly and wouldn't list it as a startup volume. Hence you could get to 9 from X but not X again from 9.
OSX should be fine you just need to tell the mac to boot from it. (You can try holding down the 'X' key at boot to try and force it to boot OSX. Or hold down the Option key should get you into the boot manager and it will list the OSs and let you pick witch to boot from (When you get back into OSX don't forget to reset it as the boot volume)
Or Try putting in the Install CD and set the start up volume from there.
Where to post depends on what iMac you have. The idea is to post in a forum of people that know it to get the best possible info.
this is the iMac (early 2006) forum for the new Intel iMac
    others are for the
    iMac G5
iMac (Flat panel) The G4 flat screen
iMac (CRT) If its a CRT (or 'TV tube') like one, or coloured, Flowery or Dalmatian like.
You don't need OS 9 if you have a full install version of Panther you can just boot from that disk and install Panther.
Also you can download the free updates to OS 9.2 from Apples web site if you want.
