Help!! I messed with 'users' under Mac HD and can't get back!!!

I got this computer from my father-in-law a while ago and went to change his username to mine. I thought i did so successfully. I also grabbed the shared folder and chucked it in the trash (something I'm sure I shouldn't have done). Later I'm browsing on Safari and it unexpectedly quit. I opened it again and all my settings (bookmarks, etc.) were gone. I restarted my computer and nothing changed. My Mail is completely reset, my address book too and who knows what else. All I want to do is go back.
Presently under users I have 3 icons:
1) first one is "Dean" with a folder icon. Dean info states that it's 1.49 GB in size and created back in March 2005
2) then there's "JON" (my father-in-law's name) with the house icon. JON info states that it's 12.3 MB in size and created last night (when all this happened).
3) lastly there's "Shared" with a folder icon. Shared info states that it's 4 KB in size and created last night as well.
Clearly the Dean folder is where all my past history and info is and is what I want back. When I click on it I get the following folders: Desktop Documents, Library, Movies, Music Pictures, Public, etc. Each folder with my personal documents, pictures etc. So it seems to me that everything is there but how do I get it back to Dean being the default user. please excuse my inept terminology and knowledge in these things. I do hope someone can help me get my safari settings, email and address book back. Thank-you.

Welcome to Apple Discussions.
You may have some opportunity to recover from your ill fated attempt to change usernames.
Please read Recover from renaming your Home folder by Dr. Smoke. Although I doubt that it will help recover items from the deleted shared folder it may restore a semblance of normalcy regarding some of your other problems.
If the files in the shared folder are critical, stop using the computer and consider Data Rescue II for file recovery.

The scroll bar is now set to appear automatically when you start scrolling with a trackpad or scroll wheel mouse. If you are using an mouse without a scrolling device, you should change a setting.
In System Preferences, click General, and in the Show Scroll Bars section, click the option for how you want it to work. If you want to see them all the time click "Always."

You can bypass the password and wipe the drive and return to the original facory installation if the seller included the orginal install DVDs with the Mac mini. If not you will need a retail version of Mac OS X. To boot from the Install DVD restart the mini, immediately slip in the DVD and press and hold the C key.

Helping my daughter with an older mac computer and isight

My oldest daugher and I successfully video chat with our macs and isight cameras,
my younger daugher now has an older laptop
It is a 500mhz Power PC G3. 128 mb and has 10.2.8
will she be able to use the isight camera if the isight camera says it needs

My "face thing" is my old avatar, unchanged from what I was using before Apple changed the Discussion forum operations on 14 Nov, 2005. The only difference is that my avatar does not fit in the same relative location as it did in the previous Apple Discussions layout.
Posting in the new Discussions has slowed me down, too, but I am not sure I understand the help you are offering me, Jon.
Are you trying to explain how to refer to a specific post inside a thread? For instance, I already know how to create a link so your previous post inside this thread will be at the top of the page when someone clicks on the link.
My biggest problem with the new Discussions is my inability to edit my User Tips. Thus, I cannot correct my old Tips to account for the formatting changes from the pre-14 November version of Discussions. There are also some links and other changes that should be made in my existing "User Tips" on Apple's pages, but Apple have not yet restored our ability to edit the User Tips that were migrated to the new system in the November 2005 change.
Until Apple restores our edit access, my work-around is to offer the corrected version of all my User Tips (and some additional topics) at EZ Jim's iSite. These versions are correct and up to date in the "Topics" posted there. If you find them of value, you have my permission to use them and to link to them in the help you offer to others.

Help - I am stuck in tge SL installer and can't get out

After a perfect install on an iMac, I tried to install on a MacBook over Tiger. The installer said there wasn't enough RAM (me bad) and I can't get out. It asked if I want to restore from TM backup - which I don't have. What can I do?

Try booting from the SL install disk and run Disk Utility.
Shut down the Mac and restart while holding down the "C" key until grey Apple appears.
Go to Installer menu (Panther and earlier) or Utilities menu (Tiger and later) and launch Disk Utility.
Select your HDD (manufacturer ID) in the left panel.
Select First Aid in the Main panel.
*(Check S.M.A.R.T Status of HDD at the bottom of right panel. It should say: Verified)*
Click Repair Disk on the bottom right.
If DU reports disk does not need repairs quit DU and restart.
If DU reports errors Repair again and again until DU reports disk is repaired.
*When you are finished with DU, from the Menu Bar, select Utilities/Startup Manager.*
*Select your start up disk and click Restart*
Check available disk space.
Control or right click the MacintoshHD icon on your Desktop. Click "Get Info". Under the General tab you will see Capacity and Available. *Make sure there is at least 10% available disk space, 15% is better.*

I have a new imac with osx 10.6.8 and can't get letter box to open in the mail window with 3 columns. I have downloaded the latest version and it also didn't open in 10.6.7. Any ideas?

Letterbox downloads and installs and is enabled, but does not produce the 3 columns in the mail window. I had the same problem with 10.6.7 and now 10.6.8. The download is the latest version (0.24b9) and the forums indicated that it works with both osx versions. I have tried deleting the letterbox plug-in and then reinstalling, but still no luck with the 3 column mail page. Any ideas would be most welcome. Thanks

i just fixed this on my machine running 10.6.8. the typical workaround is to add appropriate UUIDs, which get updated with each new os build, and break plugins (see here). Follow those instructions, but instead of adding the UUIDs they suggest for 10.6.7, add these (I found them on my machine running 10.6.8, and they work):

for fixing on os x version 10.6.7, this may help (though letterbox 0.24b9 should work already).
i emailed the author (aaron harnly, harnly.net) about this, but haven't heard back (a few days). to be sure, i am quite grateful, as i think we all are, for his excellent plugin, and this workaround is quite simple for dealing with updates.

I have 2 user names ID's and can't get iTunes match on my iPhone

I purchased iTunes Match so I could listen to my library on my iPhone. However, my iTunes user ID is different than my iPhone user ID. When I go to "settings" on my iPhone and select "ON" for iTunes match, it says I haven't purchased it. What can I do? There doesn't seem to be a way to merge the accounts and I'm afraid if I abandon one for the other, I will loose all the information associated with that ID. Can you help? Thanks in advance.

Last night I just made a new library and imported the old library into the new one. That took care of the problem. Not sure why I was able to import and not access the library, but whatever. It works.
To follow up on your question, I could see the iTunes folder via Finder and iTunes, but when I tried selecting the folder nothing would happen. The drive is connected to my airport and is seen as a network attached storage.

Help! I accidentally added a new library and can't get into my old one!

So we recieved this Passport (a hard drive, like a USB Mass Storage) with a TON of music on it. So I was going through the music, manually clicking-and-dragging each music file I wanted into a folder on the desktop. The folder was underneath iTunes.
As I was dragging a Justin Timberlake song, I accidentally dragged it into the iTunes icon. A window popped up and said something along the lines of: "This something cannot support something and iTunes will need to create a new library. Yes. No." So I pressed yes and continued dragging music files into the folder on my desktop.
Later, as I was transfering the music in the folder to iTunes, I finished and pressed sync. Yet, when I looked on my iPod after the sync, none of the music showed up. So I checked my library and it was a completely new library, with none of my old songs on it--- just the new ones!
So as I frantically fumbled around iTunes for a few hectic hours, all I accomplished was getting all of my old music into the new library, and finding my old library.
During that time, I had pressed iTunes help at one point and it had told me that if there are two libraries in iTunes, you can only view the other libraries songs and videos. So when I go to my old library, the songs (titles, album names, and artists) are faded out (grey-colored instead of black)!
So now I have all my new songs and old songs in the second library and also all the new songs and old songs in a playlist. The only way I can even VIEW my OLD library is by connecting my iPod and viewing the old library while it's faded.
How do I combine them? How do I get rid of the old library and just use the new one? HELP!!!

Try holding down the Shift key in Windows when opening iTunes. In the resulting dialogue you will get the option to create a new library or navigate to an existing one. The default location for your iTunes library is in C:\Documents and Settings\Username\My Documents\My Music\iTunes\ (or C:\Username\Music\iTunes\ in Vista). Look in there and see if you have more than one library file (they have the extension .itl) If you have more than one try opening them in turn, you may find your original library is still intact: How to open an alternate iTunes Library file

Windows won't install and can't get back to mac os

I printed boot camp instructions. I partitioned the disk with no problem, inserted windows 7 and it came up a black screen with blinking cursor. I cannot get out of it and if I restart, it says to insert bootable disk. I cannot get mac os to come up. What can I do?

Reboot, hold the option (alt) key down at the chime, when the boot manager loads select Mac OSX as the startup disk. When OSX loads go to Apple>System Preferences>Startup Disk and select OSX as the default.

Help! I've lost my Spotlight window and can't get it back!

I can't access two application windows -- Mail and Spotlight. I sometimes use a external monitor so this may be related to that.
When I switch to Mail, the Mail menu appears on top, but I do not see the window with my mailboxes in it. When I use Expose to see all the open windows, there's my Mail window, in light purple. I click on it, to select it, and the window zoooms away to the left, never to be seen again. The top menu indicates that I'm in Mail.
The same thing happens to me with Spotlight. I can search in Spotlight, but the results are in an inaccessible window that zooms away when I try to select it in Expose.
Plugging in an external monitor again does not retrieve the window, regardless of whether I mirror the displays or not. After searching these forums, I tried changing the screen resolution to 640x480 instead of 1024x768 but that didn't help. I looked in Library/Preferences to see if I could trash some preferences, but neither application seems to have any, that I know how to identify.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Just in case this comes up for anyone else... I got the windows BACK by hooking my computer up to the external monitor, and REVERSING the arrangement of the monitors (so the one that was on the left was on the right, and vice versa). This placed the window in my field of view and I was able to retrieve it.
