Why we need Air Conditioning – not just for Comfort!
As far back as the Ancient Romans there is evidence of air-conditioned homes. Water from the aqueducts were circulated through their walls of to cool them. However, the first electrical air conditioner was invented by Willis Carrier in 1902. He invented it not for comfort, but for a publishing company to keep down the temperature and humidity so the paper did not expand or contract. Since then air conditioning has become one of the most significant engineering achievements of the last century and has impacted the economy and the world in many ways. If you think comfort is the only reason you need air conditioning in your home, think again as there are many other benefits.
This article made for a great read and was interesting to find out about the history air conditioning. Air conditioning is great in helping us keep cool during the warm months of the summer. I am actually surprised that it could mostly be found in movie theaters in its ealriest days. If that was the case, I can imagine people flocking to movie theaters during that early period in time. Possibly, some of the best uses for air conditioning units today can be found in the home, the regrigerator. The refrigerating unit is basically the same in the way it functions; the goal is to extract warm air from within the unit to keep the contents within it cool. What would we do without the modern refrigerator? food preservation would be hard.

Best calendar app? need repeating alert, not just once
I'm looking for a calendar app that keeps notifying me repeatedly until I acknowledge it. From what I've seen, most calendar apps (along with the built-in one) only have a one-time alert, or the alert will alert you every other minute if you fail to acknowledge the notification. I like to keep my phone on vibrate so this is a problem. I'd like it to continuously vibrate as if I'm getting a phone call, until I acknowledge the alert. If anyone can help me out, I'd greatly appreciate it. Thanks.
You can configure a google calendar to sync any way you want (2way or 1way either way). A gmail account is free - http://www.google.com/intl/en/googlecalendar/about.html
I don't use any "app" to keep my calendars sync'd - I use iCal on my MBP, calendar on my iPhone and iPad, and Exchange on my windows machine. All calendars either read/write to the google calendar or you can set them independently to only read from or only write to it.
That is what I use to keep both my personal and my work calendars syncronized on my computers and my mobile devices. So I cannot speak to any other options, sorry - I use google for all that. -

I am getting an error - An error occurred while installing the extension “Lastpass”. Not just Lastpass, ANY extension I try to install. I just updated to Mavericks 10.9.1. Safari version 7.0.1. This is super frustrating. I was going to try to delete the extentions.plist and I cannot find that. I reset Safari. I tried just sropping files into the extentions folder, that doesn't work. Can someone please help?
Back up all data.
This procedure will unlock all your user files (not system files) and reset their ownership and access-control lists to the default. If you've set special values for those attributes on any of your files, they will be reverted. In that case, either stop here, or be prepared to recreate the settings if necessary. Do so only after verifying that those settings didn't cause the problem. If none of this is meaningful to you, you don't need to worry about it.
I've tested these instructions only with the Safari web browser. If you use another browser, they may not work as described.
Step 1
If you have more than one user account, and the one in question is not an administrator account, then temporarily promote it to administrator status in the Users & Groups preference pane. To do that, unlock the preference pane using the credentials of an administrator, check the box marked
Allow user to administer this computer
Then reboot. You can demote the problem account back to standard status when this step has been completed.
Triple-click anywhere in the following line on this page to select it:

Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Paste into the Terminal window (command-V). I've tested these instructions only with the Safari web browser. If you use another browser, you may have to press the return key after pasting.
You'll be prompted for your login password. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you don’t have a login password, you’ll need to set one before you can run the command. If you see a message that your username "is not in the sudoers file," then you're not logged in as an administrator.
The command may take a few minutes to run, or perhaps longer if you have literally millions of files in your home folder. Wait for a new line ending in a dollar sign ($) to appear, then quit Terminal.
Step 2 (optional)
Take this step only if you have trouble with Step 1, if you prefer not to take it, or if it doesn't solve the problem.
Boot into Recovery. When the OS X Utilities screen appears, select
Utilities ▹ Terminal
from the menu bar. A Terminal window will open.
In the Terminal window, type this:
res
Press the tab key. The partial command you typed will automatically be completed to this:
resetpassword
Press return. A Reset Password dialog will open. You’re not going to reset a password.
In the dialog, select the startup volume ("Macintosh HD," unless you gave it a different name) if it's not already selected.
Select your username from the menu labeled Select the user account if it's not already selected.
Under Reset Home Directory Permissions and ACLs, click the Reset button.
Select

Help! iTunes has completely disappeared off my iPhone 4s. Yes the Program, not just the app! All my music has just vanished! How do I get this back!!

It's not just Download Helper v4.8.3, it's also RealPlayer: the download display window shows .mp3 files downloading, but nothing shows in the folder when it is done downloading.
Also in the '''Properties''' window of Windows Explorer I '''no longer have the Details tab''', so I can't update my mp3 files with Artist, Album, Genre, etc. But the details tab does show up when I access it thru Windows Explorer.
I ran the AVG rescue disc an no viruses found. Now on '''FF3.6.15''' '''RealPlayer''' shows when I right click but then '''immediately disappears and an icon appears in the System Tray''', but as soon '''as I hover my mouse over it it disappears'''.
Does anyone have any ideas or suggestions?

Pages app unexpectedly quit whilst I was in the middle of a document. I can now not open it AT ALL. I find it's not just that particular document that won't open, but any of my Pages docs will not open using the current version of Pages. The reports of the app unexpectedly closing each time, automatically went to Apple, but I am not sure what happens with them then. Does anyone know how to help me with this? We live in a very isolated region so rely on internet help. Thanks
I also managed to read a few other discussions about Pages and files not being able to open. I actually went to the last back-up and restored the computer from that and everything seemed to work ok again, which is great!...advice from another discussion I think you may have been involved in PeterB. Thanks for the advice...also this advice, as I will make a note of trying to open using the Shift key if it happens again and see what happens...might be an easier first option than restoring from a back-up. Thans heaps for the help!
I was interested to read some of the other discussions where it was stated that Pages '09 seems to be a better option to use. I have both installed, so I will lkeep this in mind. Thanks heaps! -

Hi. I use windows Xp with service pack 3. I have the latest itunes 11.1 installed in it. I own ipad mini. I am able to add music or apps to my library but not just videos. I have already tried removing & reinstalling it. I also have tried with various formats like MPEG, MOV, MP4. Please help.
I already have what you ( ClayandLonnie ) have suggested with the preferences>Shareing Preferences set to share all.
I have tried turing it off, and then back on.
I have tried just sharing specific items and this still did not work.
I am going to try stepping back down to 11.04.4 as previously suggested by TheDarkCanuck when I get home tomorrow. (maybe saturday). I am just leary about having to recreate all my libraries and how long that might take. I have over 1.5 TB of Music and Video, that is why I would like to get it working in the current version.
Just because I don't have a Mac, it seems that this is not being taken as a real problem for the windows 7 users (maybe it is specific to 64bit). I may try the 32bit version to see if that fixes it first. Unless someone else has, and want to chime in. -
I seem to have lost most of my 9000 photos when I upgraded to Yosemite 10.10.3. iPhoto won't work now and says it needs an upgrade not available in the UK. Only a few of the 9000 photos appear on Photos! HELP?
Move the incompatible iPhoto version to the Trash, before you try to reinstall from the AppStore, but don't empty the Trash.

The main idea is to move the iPhoto app to the Trash, so Spotlight does not see it as installed, reload the AppStore Purchases tab with ⌘R, and then to try to download again from the App Store - from your Purchases tab, not from the main page, since you can neither buy iPhoto nor update it, but you can reinstall, if your AppleID is associated with it. -
Rating is being applied to EVERYTHING, not just the active image- please help.
Seemingly out of nowhere a particular feature in LR stopped behaving the way it normally does for me.
When I am in the Survey view (in the Library mode) and I have a number of images selected because I am trying to make my selections, it suddenly started applying my star rating to the entire set of say 10 images I have selected, and not just the one that is active. This is very strange- I have never seen it behave like this before. I can't remember hitting anything or changing any settings, but it just seemed to have started out of nowhere.
It appears that if I go in and "manually" click on the star scale that appears below each of the images when you mouse over it, THEN it will apply the star rating to just that one image, but I can no longer just hit the "5" key and have just that one image that's active get the 5 star rating. It's doing it to everything.
I've tried just restarting LR but that didn't change anything. Please please help, as this is really messing up my workflow.

Looks that something has gone wrong with the reset as you still have Firefox profile folders with a date/time stamp that a reset creates, but are using a regular default profile.<br />
Such a new default profile is likely to have been created because of a problem with the profiles.ini file (if profiles.ini is missing the Firefox will create a new default profile).
Which security software (firewall, anti-virus) do you have?
You can look at the time stamps or check the name of the JSON backups in the bookmarkbackups folder.

Apple mail out of office rule is sending auto replies to all emails not just newly received emails--HELP! I set up the rule according to another apple support thread and instead of only sending the reply to new mail received, it was sent to all messages I believe that were in my INBOX, thankfully I only had a few but several people that hadn't sent me emails since I set up the rule, received the OUT OF OFFICE reply. To access this feature in Apple's Mail app, right click on any sub-folder (like your exchange inbox on the left) and choose "Get Account Info." A window will pop up that looks like the one below. Make sure to select your Exchange account from the Account dropdown. Then click on the Out Of Office tab. If you have ever put in an Out of Office message in the past it will be displayed here. You can adjust and set your Out of Office from Apple Mail from within this tab.
