Help, I need to replace my hard drive in my hp pavilion a6863w how do i do this?

The hard drive surface test and seek test failed,  A seagate 2TB SSHD. I want to install it and I am sure I can do it but I need to know if I should leave the bad drive in and just add this one, if I do this will I need any other cables, if so, I would rather just take out the old.
I have the recovery install discs that I made when I first bought it. I have used these b4 to reinstall.
I just need to know the steps if I add the 2nd drive or the steps (if I need a cable) to replace the old drive with the new drive. Would this drive be considered my boot drive? When I ask for the steps, I am more concerned with the turning off the computer and what things I need to unplugged, etc. Then once the new drive is in place, do I simply run the recovery discs or is there an easier way?
I tried to run a backup but it stopped and wouldn't let me. I have all my important things like photo's movies, etc already backed up.

Remove the old drive, replace it with the new one and use the recovery disk set. Choose factory image recovery.

  • I need to replace the hard drive in my HP Pavilion dv6405, where can I find a replacement?

I was given this computer, first I had to contact your board to unlock because I had no password for Power on, I got it unlocked with your help, and I thank you for your help, but the hard drive must have failed because it says there is no hard drive. Do you know where I could get a replacement for it? Or is it even worth fixing?

    Hi:
First run the hard drive diagnostics found in the BIOS to see what it reports.
If it also reports no hard drive found or reports errors with the disk, the hard drive is probably dead.
I had posted the link to the service manual on your other question regarding the password.
I highly recommend you open the hard drive bay and see if there is a hard drive in there now.
If there isn't, you will not only need a new hard drive, but also the caddy which it needs to be connected to the PC's motherboard.
If the notebook has a hard drive, then you can get any SATA II notebook hard drive. I would not go beyond 320 GB for that model.
This site has hard drives at very reasonable prices.
    http://www.newegg.com/Store/SubCategory.aspx?SubCategory=380&name=Laptop-Hard-Drives
Then you just remove the caddy from the old hard drive and transfer it to the new one.
You will also need recovery disks to install the operating system and programs that shipped with the PC.
Please read the info at the link below on how to order recovery disks.
    http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?cc=us&lc=en&dlc=en&docname=bph07143#N76
If HP no longer has them for your model, then you can order them from this non-HP vendor. You will need to know if the model is a dv6405us or dv6405ca.
    http://www.computersurgeons.com/SearchProducts.aspx
If you discover your PC does not have a hard drive or caddy, it would be best if you ordered a drive from HP (one of the ones listed in chapter 3 of the service manual). I believe they come with the caddy.

  • Do I need to replace my Hard Drive?

My Mid 2012 13" MacBook Pro recently was not able to boot on startup when I reset the NVRAM. I looked on the commands and there was something to do with a hard drive error. I had to reinstall OS X for me to use it again.
Since then my computer has been unusably laggy at times and performance has dropped. YouTube and other videos will lag uncontrollably and Minecraft runs at about 1 FPS. I am also running bootcamp and problems are consistent on Windows 7 as well. Do I need to replace the Hard Drive or just completely reformat it and reinstall OS X from a bootable disk?
    THANKYOU

You shoudn't consider replacing your drive unless you know that's the problem. AHT, to the best of my knowledge, does not do surface scans on drives and it can't tell you if you have bad sectors. It can, however, identify other problems so running tests on the system might help you.
Other things to consider are the following:
How much free disk space do you have? If you're running out of disk space the system will not be able to swap out properly or easily and your system will bog down.
How much memory are you using? If you're using a lot then swapping will be rampant and your system will slow down.
Are there problematic applications that don't work properly that are consuming too much memory or hitting your system with a lot of disk reads and writes?
If you're using Mountain Lion, have you upgraded to 10.8.4? If not, do so. A lot of your problems may disappear.
The easiest way to check the first 3 above is with Activity Monitor. You can find a good write up on it with the following link:
    http://www.scsc-online.com/Activity%20Monitor.html
I'm sure there are others on the web that are every bit as good as well. If you're still convinced your drive is the problem then check out this link for a list of drive testing tools:
    http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=1544280
That list is pretty much the web's de facto standard list of reliable hard drive testing tools currently available for Macs, and it's reasonably up to date, unlike some of the other lists on the web that are 5 years old or older. I really wouldn't assume it's the drive until you check out other stuff first.
    Good luck, diddypants.

Hello, I am having a macbook air early 2008 and it is having a hard drive failure i need to replace the hard drive is it possible ? the hard drive number is HS082HB could you please help !!

You can replace it with a solid state drive, see the one OWC sells here.  The video on how to install it is here.
iFixit.com has used hard drives available here.
If it were me, I'd go with a solid state drive, as the prices have come down recently and the performance improvement is noticeable.

  • HT4889 Replacing System hard drive with a new one. How to get everything over to the new boot drive?

Replacing System hard drive with a new one. How to get everything over to the new boot drive? Should I use Carbon Copy or does apple have a better untility to do this?
I can't get my current system drive (OSX 10.8.3) to start on the first try. I always have to shut down and restart again to finally see the Apple logo.
Have used disc utility to repair the disc and permissions several times and that works. The next time I boot up, it works fine and I get the apple logo, but then the second time I boot up, it's back to the blank screen again and it only boots after the second try.  I have tried this repair three different times now always with the same result. Works right the first try (after the repair) then from the second time on it doesn't work. I just get the white screen until I reboot a second time.
Thinking I should change drives but what's the easist and best way to move everything over to the new drive so it will boot correctly with all my data on it. This is the system drive for a Pro Tools 10HD setup. MacPro 3,1 with 16 gigs ram and OSX10.8.3 on it.
    Thanks for any help!

If you have a time machine back up of your current drive you can do this
Shut down your computer, install the new drive. While the computer is off plug in the external hard drive that you have your time machine back up on. Hold Option key while the computer turnes on, let go of the option key once you get a grey screen. Shortly after you'll see  a list of bootable drives, select the one that has your time machine back up on it and boot into that drive.
From there go into disk utility, format your new drive too, osx extended journaled ( I think, double check that, its been awhile since ive had to do this), hit format
Exit disk utility and then you can use time machine to copy all your exisit data to the new hhd and then your pretty much done.
There is also a program called Carbon Cloner that will do esentially the same thing however I've never uesed it.

  • I just had to replace my hard drive. I want to know how to re-download my Lightroom 5.0. I have my serial number and everything. Please help me!!

So, this past week I had a lot of problems with my computer and had to replace my hard drive. Doing so, meant that I lost all my files, pictures, Word, Power Point, and Lightroom 5.0 which I just got in December. Right now, I just am downloading the Cloud, and it says that Lightroom is downloading. I hope that it will be on my computer and all good but Im really not sure if I'm doing the right thing. I tried calling customer service TWICE yesterday, got put on hold both times, once for 25 minutes the other for 32 minutes. I was dumb. BUT if you are able to help me get Lightroom back on to my computer that would be wonderful. If I am already on the right path and just have to wait for it to finish downloading that woohoo!!
    Thanks,

    Hi,
See the maintenance and service guide for your laptop: http://h10032.www1.hp.com/ctg/Manual/c01758220.pdf
There are listed all compatible hard drive (size and rpm). You can buy a 500GB 5400rpm hard drive as a replacement. I recommend Western Digital hard drives: http://www.amazon.com/Western-Digital-Scorpio-Drive-WD5000BEVT/dp/B001JSSDGU/ref=sr_1_1?s=pc&ie=UTF8...

  • I have to replace my hard drive in my 2008 macbook. HOW DO I BUY A NEW HARD DRIVE???

The apple genius said I can easily buy one online and a 10 year old could put it in. However, all of the hard drives I'm seeing mention PC rather than Mac.

SATA drives are the same for Mac, PC or PlayStation. It's the way that they're formatted that make the difference.
    For a hard drive try Newegg.com http://www.newegg.com/Store/SubCategory.aspx?SubCategory=380&name=Laptop-Hard-Dr ives&Order=PRICE
    Or OWC  http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/hard-drives/2.5-Notebook/
Here's instructions on replacing the hard drive http://creativemac.digitalmedianet.com/articles/viewarticle.jsp?id=45088
To transfer your current hard drive I like the free application Carbon Copy Cloner. It makes a bootable copy of everything on your hard drive http://www.bombich.com/index.html You'll need a cheap SATA external hard drive case. Put the new drive in the case and clone your old drive to the new one. Then replace your old hard drive with the new one.
With the new drive plugged in, open Disk Utility. It's in the Utililities folder in your Applications folder. You should see the new drive in the left hand column along with your other drives. Click on the new drive and select the Erase tab. Set the format value to Mac OS Extended (Journaled) and click the Erase button. After that has finished select the Partition tab. Type in a Name for your hard drive and select how many partitions you want from the Volume Scheme. The usual setting is one partition. Click on the Options button after you've selected a partition to make sure it's set for GUID. Then click the Apply button and after the partitioning is done quit Disk Utility. Your new drive should now appear on your desktop. Then clone your old drive to the new one.

  • Help/explanation needed - Using an external hard drive

    Hi everyone,
I bought an external 250gb hard drive as my MBP was very close to full capacity. Yesterday, I had a bit of a scare...
    1. I backed up my Aperture Library onto the external hard drive.
    2. I had about 500 of my favourite images rated 5 star and so I selected these and set up a new project.
    3. I went through my Aperture library deleting folders/projects that I have completed.
    4. I went back into the 5 star ratings and they did not exist. I assume this is because I deleted the master files.
    5. I wanted to have the 5 star images on my laptop and so I connected my external hard drive once again. [This is where I felt I lost control and understanding of what was going on].
    6. I looked for the seperate Aperture files but could only find a file called Aperture Library. I clicked on this but nothing happened at all [I had thought that it would open up Aperture with the previous library].
    7. I dragged the library onto my desktop and waiting for all the images to reload onto my laptop. I then saw that everything was as it was previously, i.e. all the files and images existed. However, my hard drive space was even lower [I assume this was because the current workflow that I had left on the laptop was now duplicated?].
    8. Then I got a message saying my iDisk space is critically low and may damage my Aperture library. Moments later the majority of my images disappeared and a red space appeared where every photo had previously been. Since I have 2 weddings that I am yet to deliver I was very panicked. I tried to drag and drop the Aperture library once again and the message came back that the operation could not be completed due to the current file already existing.
    9. I unplugged the external hard drive and the photos re-appeared [much to my delight]. However, my concern is that I really don't understand what happened and more importantly why. I will need access to the data on the external hard drive in the event in the near future and am worried that the same thing will happen next time I connect it.
As a result of all this I have some questions, as follows:-
    - Have I adopted the completely wrong approach to backing up data?
    - Can the master files be compressed as I shoot RAW and these are huge files?
    - Why could I not use the Aperture library stored on the external hard drive without downloading it back onto the laptop?
and a more general question about file storage...
    - I am confused as to how much hard drive space is being used on my MBP. I have 13gb in Aperture, 1gb in iTunes and 1gb in iPhoto. However, I only have 50gb available, so half the capacity is currently being used. I know that Aperture and Garageband applications use about 10gb between them and there is of course the operating system, but 50gb in total seems a lot. On investigation in the finder screen I see that on my personal drive the Aperture, iTunes and iPhoto data is stored there. However, it is also stored under pictures and music respectively. Does this mean that it is storing duplicate copies of this data and that is the explanation for such high hard drive usage? If this is the case, can one be removed?
I appreciate that this has been a long email, but I felt it was important to illustrate the steps I have taken. As you will no doubt glean from this post I am not the most computer literate person. Any help/explanation would be most appreciated.
    Many thanks,
    Jamie

    Hi Jamie.
I am not sure what went wrong with your setup but I will let you know my configuration as an example and you can decide if you think it is a good way to have it. I am asuming you are using ver 1.5?
Like you I have only a Laptop (G4 17" 1.5Ghz 2 Gig Ram - would love a macbook) so hard disk space is a premium. I also have an external firewire drive to hold all the HiRes RAW images. When I download my images from the Camera I do it manually into folders on the external drive (Cataloged by Date and maybe description of location). I then Import the images from those folders into Aperture but use the option when importing to "Store Files - In their current location".
My Aperture library file is on my laptop so all that it has to store is the "Preview" file that gets generated automatically (in the preferences I have it set up to the resolution of my laptop 1440pix so that if I did a slide show it is only as big as my screen - anything more is a waste of disk space IMO.)
I do it this way so that it is easy to find and work on my files with other programs such as Photoshop by going straight to the image rather than exporting from Aperture.
Obviously I cant edit the RAW files while the drive is disconnected but I can still do ratings and keywords without the original files being there.
    I hope this helps.
    Regards
    Andrew

  • Need to replace my hard drive, no response from hp in 5 days

    Hi,
I bought a HP Pavilion Touchsmart 15b146ef in France some months ago (still under warranty) and my hard disk drive in now dead. I ran a hard drive short DST check test which failed with the following failure ID : 60D5XV-6MQ6TA-MFPWW1-60QX03. It's a 303 error meaning that I have no other choice than replace my HDD. The problem is that I'm in Sweden for my studies and no one from HP is able to help me (in France and in Sweden).
What can I do ? Does anyone have a direct email contact that I could use to speak with the HP Support Sweden ?
Thanks for reading and for answering if possible

I can't reach the HP Support Sweden service (tried 5 days long). Do you have any contact? Sorry but NO, I don't have any contact information other than what is publicly available.
And I don't have any CD/DVD driver on my computer, how can I do without having to buy an external CD/DVD reader? On today's computers, a 32GB USB Flash Drive can replace Recovery Discs. If the computer can still boot and the Recovery partition is not corrupted, you may be able to create a USB Recovery Flash Drive.
If you have any further questions, please don't hesitate to ask.

  • Need to replace failing hard drive but I don't have RnR discs

The hard drive has started to fail on my brand new T500 with WIn7 Pro pre-installed. I have not had time to create RnR discs. Lenovo support says they are ready to ship a new hard drive but there is a problem getting the RnR discs put together with the drive for me. When the drive first started to fail, I tried to create the RnR DVDs but it seemed to be going nowhere.  I got 1 DVD created that I was told to label "Final SP". What is that?  There is next to no information available describing the process, but I'd like to take another crack at it in case there is a major delay in Lenovo replacing my drive and providing RnR discs.  Any idea how long it should take and how many DVDs? Any suggestions??
    Thanks.

OK. I took another look and I think I found what I need to create the Rescue discs... don't know how I missed it the first time around.  I will give it a shot.

  • Help! Need to recover lost hard drive data after creating a partition!

So, I'm the world's biggest idiot, and I was trying to reformat my hard drive so that I could bring the documents from my Mac to my PC.
All of the docs were perfectly organized in folders and subfolders a long time ago, and once that had been done, I deleted everything off of the MacBook itself. I never thought I'd have to move all of the docs to a PC, but alas, nothing ever goes the way we plan now does it?
Anyways, I created a FAT 32 partition not realizing it would delete everything I already had on the hard drive, so now I need to recover all of that.
Is there ANY way that I can recover all the data I lost?
    Pls respond.

When you create a partition, the partition is the erased so all content is lost.  There are data recovery services that may be able to recover the material, but they are very, very expensive, if they can even succeed with this kind of erasure.
Check and see if there are any hard drive data recovery services in your area.

I have a HP Pavilion Slimline s5212y with Windows 7. My computer shut down with no error messages. Tried rebooting using F10 where I see the HArdware Diagnostics screen and then the computer dies. I don't get to run a repair or any diagnostics. • Do I need to replaced my hard drive?

For the second time this month I am restoring from Time Machine due to disk errors. The current restore has been running for 2 days and still has 30 hours for an estimate.

    Barbara Daniels1 wrote:
I'd guess that the Time Machine backups might be corrupted - if the data was backed up from a corrupted hard drive? So, I wouldn't even do that unless I had a known "clean" earlier backup?
It's possible, but doubtful. Time Machine backups and restores are file-level, not block-level, so directory problems, etc., will usually make the process fail, rather than being copied.
But it does happen on occasion that a file damaged internally will be coped, and of course if something gets deleted, it won't be copied at all. Since it apparently restored ok, the backups are probably ok.
Most likely, you're right about it being a problem with the internal HD.
