Help - I need to run IE on my iMac. How can i do it?

I have a site that i need to access for work that only runs in Internet Explorer and i have just upgrdaed my office computer to a nice new iMac.  I have tried accessing it using chrome, mozilla etc too but nothing - They say I can only use IE which i thought i had seen the last of when i switched over.
I did try to download the old mac verson of IE but that wont run on my imac.
Can anyone tell me if there is a simple solution? Its driving me mad as i really need to access this site and dont want to have to go and boot up the old p.c everythime i need to access this site as i wanted to get rid of it from my office.
Thanks
Sharon

Boot Camp is not the only option for running Internet Explorer on a Mac. It enables you to install Windows on a partition of your internal drive, alongside OS X, and boot from it as you would boot a PC. The disadvantage is that you have to restart the computer every time you switch between operating systems.
The other option is to run Windows in a virtual machine, using an application such as VMware, VirtualBox, or Parallels. That way you wouldn't have to reboot every time you need to access Windows.
Neither of these options is ideal, and both are really only suitable for advanced users. The best option, if you have to use Windows regularly, is to run it on a cheap PC networked to your Mac. A basic netbook costs not much more than a retail Windows disc, and takes up very little space.

  • URGENT HELP IS NEEDED!!!!!! How can i get two applet to communicate via a j

I am writing a program that should allow me to communicate between applet. The applet is loaded via the a web site, but i can't get that to work, so i am using appletviewer instead.
I want to establish a connection between the applets thus allowing to chat.
So far i can open both applets up, (using localhost), but the applet isn't able to establish the connection and i have to turn off one of the applet window, before i get a connection, but it won't do anything after that.
I know it is a security problem, but how can i fix this problem.
Please can you help, i am in difficult position
    Junaid

I think what u are trying to do is some peer-to-peer communication using applets.
The thing is the applet knows ( via getCodeBase and getDocumentBase methods) from where it was launched. It has no knowledge of where other applets from the same server may be residing.
It looks to me that you will need to do some server-side coding as well..
On possible solution would be to
    A) Install and run a Tomcat Server
    B) Tomcat can be used as a webserver in limited way .. (refer it documentation ) by defaul it runs on port 8080
    C) So you can say http://localhost:8080/
    D) Use this launch the applets
    E) Using HTTP Tunneling ( Read about it in Servlets ) you can set up Tomcat to broker messages between the 2 applets
Also from you question it appear that both the applets try to hook on the same port, now on one computer (localhost) one port can be used by one socket . Try to get them to use different ports then the appletviewer problems should solve it self.
To use different ports without making 2 different applets , simeply pass the port as a PARAM to the applet

Drivers? You need a program to run them such as K-Jams. Then you will need to check your connections from the laptop to the monitor and make sure your settings are correct in System Preferences.

You can get the Equivalent Network Password from the menu options of the AirPort Utility as follows:
Start the AirPort Utility; select the AirPort, and then, select Manual Setup.
From the Utility's menu bar, select Base Station, and then, Equivalent Network Password to reveal the hexidecimal key code.

I'd say your sister messed up and your iPod is toasted.
Think about it...  She plugged it in to another computer, she doesn't remember what she did (yeah, right), and now your iPod is not being recognized by your computer...
Also take into consideration how old is your sister, and how much does she know about electronics?

I need Internet Explorer for my MBP.  How can I get this?

You can't — at least not if you want to run it in the Mac OS. If you have Winidows installed on your Mac, then of course you can run the Windows version of IE, but the Mac version hasn't been updated since June 2003 and is unsupported by Microsoft. It's very insecure, it can't handle a lot of current web sites, and it may not run at all in recent OS X versions. It was lousy in 2003, and it can't have gotten any better while the world was passing it by.
If there's a web site you want to access that says it requires IE, complain to its webmaster about the benighted design of the site. No responsible web designer codes sites for just one browser any more. Every web site should be tested and should work well with a large variety of browsers — IE, Firefox and Chrome at a bare minimum — and every site owner should insist that their designer(s) adhere to that "best practice."

I want to give away or sell a 6500/250 running 7.6.1. How can the hard disk be erased so that the data are gone, not recoverable? thanks, LifeisRich

I'd recommend that you check for Mac User Group(s) in Orange County.  That's where you'd likely find a diehard Mac fanatic who might want to add your 6500 to his/her collection.  Even if you got nothing for it, it would be better than e-cycling it.  I upgraded my 6500/275 with what was a "large" hard drive at the time (15 GBs), maxed the memory at 128 MBs, installed the 512K L2 cache card, a better ATI Rage Pro PCI graphics card, a USB PCI card, and an internal 56K modem.  With it running OS 9.1, it did all of the pre-OS X stuff I needed it to do.  As I previously mentioned, it's a nice-sounding MP3 player.  Internet Explorer 5.1.7 (the final release from 2001) kept it useful for surfing the web up until 2005, when it became too outdated/incompatible with many web sites.  Unfortunately, the demands of the internet and the need for a modern browser, as well as faster processing to digest it all, are what retired many older Macs from active duty.  So my (2) 6500s and (3) 6400s (same tower design) sit in storage.  There is one concern that I'll pass along: The motherboard has a 4.5-volt alkaline battery, that's a small, black plastic cube, secured in place by velcro.  If your 6500 has been disconnected from electricity for a long time, the battery will undoubtedly be dead.  Unlike the many Apple computers that used a small ½AA lithium battery (that I've never seen leak when completely dead), the 6500's battery can and usually does start leaking.  Because the motherboard sits vertically oriented on its side edge when installed, the leaking battery will drip alkaline solution down the board, corroding any components in it path.  I've seen motherboards ruined from this.  If you're going to give it away or sell it, you might want to pull the motherboard (remove the two machine screws on the rear I/O panel, next to the pull tabs).  Slide out the board and unplug the battery's small connector (has red & black wires), then lift up on the battery, while holding down the "toothed" velcro mount with something non-conductive, like a popsicle stick.  Once it's free, dispose of the battery.  If you're interested, a replacement can be purchased for about $5-$7 from battery specialty retailers - it's a Rayovac 870 or 871.  Even if you don't replace it, removing one that will eventually leak is a good idea, (hopefully) before any damage is done.

  • I am on a intel Imac and need to update to 10.5. How can i do this?

I am on a intel Imac and need to update to 10.5. How can i do this?

You really should update to Snow Leopard because Leopard is no longer in production. The following tells you about Snow Leopard but also what's need to upgrade past Snow Leopard should you be able and wish to do so.
Upgrade Paths to Snow Leopard, Lion, and/or Mountain Lion
You can upgrade to Mountain Lion from Lion or directly from Snow Leopard. Mountain Lion can be downloaded from the Mac App Store for $19.99. To access the App Store you must have Snow Leopard 10.6.6 or later installed.
    Upgrading to Snow Leopard
You must purchase Snow Leopard through the Apple Store: Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard - Apple Store (U.S.). The price is $19.99 plus tax. You will be sent physical media by mail after placing your order.
After you install Snow Leopard you will have to download and install the Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1 to update Snow Leopard to 10.6.8 and give you access to the App Store. Access to the App Store enables you to download Mountain Lion if your computer meets the requirements.
         Snow Leopard General Requirements
           1. Mac computer with an Intel processor
           2. 1GB of memory
           3. 5GB of available disk space
           4. DVD drive for installation
           5. Some features require a compatible Internet service provider;
               fees may apply.
           6. Some features require Apple’s MobileMe service; fees and
               terms apply.
    Upgrading to Lion
If your computer does not meet the requirements to install Mountain Lion, it may still meet the requirements to install Lion.
You can purchase Lion by contacting Customer Service: Contacting Apple for support and service - this includes international calling numbers. The cost is $19.99 (as it was before) plus tax.  It's a download. You will get an email containing a redemption code that you then use at the Mac App Store to download Lion. Save a copy of that installer to your Downloads folder because the installer deletes itself at the end of the installation.
         Lion System Requirements
           1. Mac computer with an Intel Core 2 Duo, Core i3, Core i5, Core i7,
               or Xeon processor
           2. 2GB of memory
           3. OS X v10.6.6 or later (v10.6.8 recommended)
           4. 7GB of available space
           5. Some features require an Apple ID; terms apply.
    Upgrading to Mountain Lion
To upgrade to Mountain Lion you must have Snow Leopard 10.6.8 or Lion installed. Purchase and download Mountain Lion from the App Store. Sign in using your Apple ID. Mountain Lion is $19.99 plus tax. The file is quite large, over 4 GBs, so allow some time to download. It would be preferable to use Ethernet because it is nearly four times faster than wireless.
OS X Mountain Lion - System Requirements
Macs that can be upgraded to OS X Mountain Lion
             1. iMac (Mid 2007 or newer)
             2. MacBook (Late 2008 Aluminum, or Early 2009 or newer)
             3. MacBook Pro (Mid/Late 2007 or newer)
             4. MacBook Air (Late 2008 or newer)
             5. Mac mini (Early 2009 or newer)
             6. Mac Pro (Early 2008 or newer)
             7. Xserve (Early 2009)
         Are my applications compatible?
See App Compatibility Table - RoaringApps.
Am I eligible for the free upgrade?
See Apple - Free OS X Mountain Lion upgrade Program.
For a complete How-To introduction from Apple see Upgrade to OS X Mountain Lion.
How to Install OS X Updates Successfully
    A. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions:
Boot from your current OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. Then select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer. Now restart normally.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior (4.0 for Tiger) and/or TechTool Pro (4.5.2 for Tiger) to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
    B. Make a Bootable Backup Using Restore Option of Disk Utility:
      1. Open Disk Utility from the Utilities folder.
      2. Select the destination volume from the left side list.
      3. Click on the Restore tab in the DU main window.
      4. Check the box labeled Erase destination.
      5. Select the destination volume from the left side list and drag it to the
          Destination entry field.
      6. Select the source volume from the left side list and drag it to the
          Source entry field.
      7. Double-check you got it right, then click on the Restore button.
Destination means the external backup drive. Source means the internal
    startup drive.
    C. Important: Please read before installing:
      1. If you have a FireWire hard drive connected, disconnect it before installing the update
unless you will boot from this drive and install the update on it. Reconnect it and turn
it back on after installation is complete and you've restarted.
      2. You may experience unexpected results if you have installed third-party system
software modifications, or if you have modified the operating system through
other means. (This does not apply to normal application software installation.)
      3. The installation process should not be interrupted. If a power outage or other
interruption occurs during  installation, use the standalone installer (see below)
from Apple Downloads to update.  While the installation  is in progress do not use
          the computer.
    D. To upgrade:
Purchase the Snow Leopard Retail DVD.
Boot From The OS X Installer Disc:
          1. Insert OS X Installer Disc into the optical drive.
          2. Restart the computer.
          3. Immediately after the chime press and hold down the "C" key.
          4. Release the key when the spinning gear below the dark gray Apple
              logo appears.
          5. Wait for installer to finish loading.
          6. Follow instructions.
    E. If updating:
      1. Download and install update(s)
      2. Use Software Update, or
      3. Download standalone updater(s).
