Help! I need to upgrade my Dell Optiplex GX260 (tower) power supply!

Hi,
I plan on taking a trip to Best Buy today to purchase a video card and power supply for my Dell Optiplex GX260 (tower). I am looking to get at least a 500W power supply. Can you tell me the BEST power supply that will work/fit that Best Buy sells? Thanks very much.

I see that you posted back in March of 2009 so I hope that you haven't already fried a motherboard or PSU while learning the hardway, as I feel that I almost did. We have a Dell GX260 that my daughter wants to play some games on but I found out that the Graphic Card (ATI Radeon 7500 series) was not good enough for the games that she wants to play so I decided to upgrade the graphic card, unfortunately I found out that a lot of newer cards have PCI-Express connectors and not the PCI I need. As well, I found out that most of the PCI cards above what I have need more than the 250Watt power supply that I have. So I thought, why not just upgrade my my PSU and then I found out that Dell actually rewires their PSU differently than the industry standard ATX connectors but I see a lot of post and recommendations from people that say that you can use any store bought PSU to upgrade your Optiplex GX260 but BEWARE that if you bought your system after late 1998 then you have a Dell system that has their own proprietary wiring configuaration and even though you can buy a standard ATX PSU at bestbuy and it will seem to fit properly, it will either fry your new PSU or worse yet, it will fry your motherboard as well. In fact, I went to bestbuy three days ago and bought a graphic card and the salesman told me that if my PSU was not at least 300Watt, which is what the card required, that I can come back and buy a standard PSU from them and that would fix the problem. The salesman even knew that I had a Dell System so I wonder if BestBuy would be willing to replace my motherboard if I had fried it based on what the bestbuy salesman told me to do???? I am glad I stumbled across the information and plan on upgrading my PSU with a compatible Dell PSU or look for a Dell Converter (if there is such a cable) or just replace both my PSU and Motherboard as directed. I also think I might actually build my next PC from scratch with all industry standard parts, as I was very ignorant up until now that Dell was doing this to their products and I have 3 of their systems in my house....but no more!!! I did find a Dell compatible PSU 500 Watt on PCPower.com but it comes with SATA drive connectors and my Optiplex GX260 has IDE connectors so I don't know if I can get a SATA to IDE conversion or not but as you can see I am still researching my options. I might actually find it will be cheaper to just buy a new system or build the one of my dreams!!
I know I wrote a lot but I hope that this information is helpful to someone else out there who is in the same boat as me.

Help with using itunes with 4s library after i upgraded to iPhone 5 and computer power supply went

long story hopefully an easy fix....
on wensday my power supply went and had to ship computer across country to Puget Computer Systems as we weren't sure if it was power supply or mobo...luckily it was power supply.
i daily backed up iphone 4s with itunes (10.7) as i do all music manually, playlists, etc. have like 3,000 plus songs, videos, audiobooks, mail aaccts and about 48 apps.
so next day (sept 19th) apple comes out with iOS 6 which i update my 4s to with no problem. I wanted a day to play with it to learn my way around.
next day i wait in line for 8 hours overnite and was #2 in line at apple store for my ATT 32gb white iPhone 5. while at apple store I get my icloud backup which gets all paid music,apps, etc since itunes version 10.3 (i always did both backups so as not to lose my contacts more than anything.
I have other paid stuff that is in library on computer along with audiobooks and about 2700 more songs.
my icloud backup put the playlists on iPhone but not most of the music for them as lots were ripped from my cd's.as i double them up making a copy on iPhone and a copy on itunes.
So I have been using iPhone 5 with no problems just don't have all of itunes library on it. My computer is coming back this week how do I plug in iPhone 5 via USB (which will be seen as new phone even though it has same name) and use my existing iTunes 10.7 library which the backups in iTunes still has iOS 5.1.1 on it?
There must be an easy way of doing it as i don't want to wipe off iphone 5 again as i don't see any purpose my library is all organized perfectly. I know my way around windows 7 pro 64 bit pretty well just don't know what itunes is going to say once it sees "joe's iPhone" again and installs the usb drivers and icon for it. what will it ask in regards to library and how do i use it with previous iOS on it?

Optiplex 960 DT Power Supply Upgrade

Does anyone know if the standard 255 watt power supply unit (PSU) for the Optiplex 960 DT chassis can be upgraded to a higher wattage PSU? Any recommendations if this is possible? The DT chassis is smaller than the MT (minitower chassis) and bigger than the small form factor chassis. Thanks!

Hi, on 23rd of December i got mine 960 MT with 255W power supply. I imediately change it with spare 305W PS from optiplex 755. If fits and now I can run Radeon HD 4850 Toxic video card without power problems.
Try to use optipplex 755 DT power supply (280W) but i don't know for any other that will fit.

I just bought a new Toshiba laptop A505-S69803 that came with Windows 7 Home Premium (64-bit). Because my wife has a lot of software that can only run in compatibility mode is not supported under Windows 7 Home Premium (63), I have bought Windows 7 Professional. However, I realized that when I bought the laptop from Best Buy, it did NOT come with any CDs/DVDs with drivers, etc.
Since upgrading to Win 7 Pro is destructive to what ever is on the hard disk now, is it simply enough for me to:
(a) download all the drivers off the Toshiba A505-S69803 support site,
(b) install Windows 7 Professional (64 bit)
(c) install the Toshiba A505-S69803 drivers
What critical steps am I missing?

The very first thing to do is create your Recovery Disks. The next step is to follow the previous posters instructions.
The bad news is that upgrading to Professional won't change anything for you. You still will not be able to run XP Mode on that model as the Intel T6600 processor does NOT support Hardware VT which is one of the requirements to running XP Mode. You could install something like Virtualk Box and then do a clean install of XP from an actual XP Install Disk that you would have to purchase, but that is a lot more difficult and doesn't work nearly as well as XP Mode does.
If you don't post your COMPLETE model number it's very difficult to assist you. Please try to post in complete sentences with punctuation, capitals, and correct spelling. Toshiba does NOT provide any direct support in these forums. All support is User to User in their spare time.

Dell optiplex gx260

this machine has an intel i845 graphics chipset, with the vesa driver i get horrible fonts at 16bits and 1024x768, just unusable. then after reading in the forums someone had an intel i915 chipset i think working with the i810 driver i figured ill use that. well, turns out it works fine at 1280x1024 24bits, but im still a little surprised it worked, so i was wondering if there are some test or things i can do to make sure everything is working properly. thx.

I am not sure about the GX260, but the GX270,GX280 and GX620 all come with an onboard graphic chip that uses 1 to 8 Mb of main Ram and gives bad performance.
Almost any cheap Ati / Nvidia card (40-50 euro) performs better.

WatchDogsPerson, welcome to the forum. Here are the system requirements for GTA IV. According to them you will have to upgrade the video card and the power supply unit (PSU). I suggest a PSU with at least 500W. This will assure that you have enough power to run the card that you choose. I like Corsair products. The video cards newer than the GTX 640 require UEFI in the motherboard rather than a standard Legacy BIOS. There are not that many of the older cards available. I am going to add my opinion. Since your computer is 7 years old, if it were me, I would save my money and buy a new computer. You can buy a new computer for several hundred dollars more than you want spend to upgrade your current computer. Any new computer will be light-years ahead of your current technology. Here is a good example. You will have to use your current monitor. I don't like to see anyone spend money on a computer that may or may not do what they want to do with it. Help a newb connect his power supply cables to the MSI Z97 XPower AC?

My Background
I am mostly a software kind of guy, and this is my first time building a computer. I saved lots of money, did lots of research, and picked my parts.
So far, I've installed my CPU & Fan to the Motherboard, and mounted them to the case.
Now it's time to install my Power Supply. Mounting it to the case is easy. The problem comes when I have to connect the cables. The manuals don't explain the purpose of these cables or provide "step-by-step" instructions.
I've been searching for over an hour, but can't get a clear idea of what I'm supposed to do. So I'm hoping someone can help me here.
Hardware
Motherboard: MSI Z97 XPOWER AC
Power Supply: Seasonic X-1250
(EDIT: Forum does not let me link to the manuals, so for anyone who needs...please look online)
Problem
On page 29 of my motherboard manual, it shows 4 different power connection slots (JPWR1, JPWR2, JPWR3, JPWR4). Unfortunately, it doesn't explain what goes in them.
On page 59 & 61 of my Power Supply manual, there is listing of all the key cables.
I think the "Mainboard 24/20 Pin" cable goes into the "JPWR1" slot.
- So I am mostly confused about the other slots (JPWR2, JPWR3, JPWR4).
- Also, it's confusing that there are two CPU cables called "CPU 8/4 Pin" & "CPU 8 Pin".
Can anyone help me?

all can be used however you plan to use them! all them connectors are tied to a single 104amp +12v Rail so they are getting power off a single Rail!
as long as what you plug them into do not exceed the Rail's ratings your fine (would take quite a few Graphics cards to get above that) (basically if it works it works) (would take like 2 R9-295x2's or 4 R9-290X's to get to that point)

Is your external hard drive formatted for Mac? To transfer your current hard drive I like the free application Carbon Copy Cloner. It makes a bootable copy of everything on your hard drive http://www.bombich.com/index.html Check that it's set up right by booting up from the external drive. Put the new drive in your MacBook, then format and partition the new drive. Then use Carbon Copy Cloner to transfer your OS back to the new drive.

I had a 640GB HDD in my Early 2008 Macbook and it was just too much it would always freeze up the computer a bit for only a few seconds but ya. Then I realized that it was the size of the HDD that was causing it since the Early 2008 Macbook models can only handle a MAX od 500GB while the Early 2008 Macbook Pros could have a MAX of 640GB (Lucked out there!) lol But ya the Early 2008 Mocbooks can only handle a MAX HDD size of 500GB and that's it!! lol

Hi, thank u for responding, my harddrive is 10 gigs, and my memory ram is only 64 megs, I ordered 2 512 mg from 18004memory.com and it didnt work , the computer said there was a memory issue. So I returned the memory back to 18004 memory.com...... I will neve ruse them again , because on their website they stated its guranteed to work and is compliant with imac 400 dv. They stated they will send me another set from another manufacturer, but to return the memory first.....

The install discs I bought on ebay state imac MAC osx install disc one and there is and install disc 2, it says AHT VERSION 3A127, and dated as produced in the year 2007. it colored grey , but doesnt have the black X like someone else posted it should have

I currently have iTunes version 7 and I need to upgrade to version 10. I am afraid of losing all my music if I just download 10 and when I use the "Check for updates" in the version 7 help menu, it tells me the server cannot be contacted.

Back up your music and install from the website. You probably won't need to do this, but if your library is erased, restore it from the backup.

Many third party applications (and some Apple ones) may need updates for SL (Adobe particularly) and definitely will for Lion/Mountain Lion, so check with the vendors for compatability before you upgrade.
Also, while most legacy PPC apps that run in Leopard will also run in SL under Rosetta, they won't run at all in Lion/ML as Rosetta support has been dropped. That may include drivers for some older peripherals as well as apps like Appleworks or Office 2004 or earlier and many Adobe apps.
For what it's worth, I'd go to 10.6.8 and try the printer. If it works OK, stay there until you have a chance to try the newer OS on someone elses computer. It's not for everyone, as may be attested by the number of requests for info on rolling back to SL.
