HELP! I think my computer secretly hates me

I bought my iBook G4 a year and a half ago, new from apple. Recently, within the last month or so, everything is going wrong! Safari and iTunes unexpectedly quit on me constantly. My computer has been freezing, forcing restart. And one thing that happens as well, is randomly the screen goes gray and a little box pops up telling me that I have to restart my computer. This happens when I'm usually in the middle of a paper. I have 256 MB memory and I have about 39 GB available on my hard drive. I've cleared a bunch of stuff out that I don't need and it still does it. I don't know what to do. Another helpful bit of info, a few months ago, my RAM card was bumped somehow and it ended up being offset from it's little home. I fixed it, put it back where it belonged, but this whole shutting down on me thing, didn't happen until later.

Hi valamrama,
Before running Archive & Install you might like to run through
Dr Smoke's 'Resolving Kernel Panics' first.
"...a few months ago, my RAM card was bumped somehow and it ended up being offset from it's little home. I fixed it, put it back where it belonged..."
If you're referring to the original, installed RAM I'm not sure how you can have done that. The original RAM is not user accessible as far as I know. Or do you mean that you have an additional 256mb RAM which you reseated. (How does a RAM card get 'bumped' anyway...?)
If it is, indeed, additional RAM then remove it completely and see if that solves your problems.
Anyway run through Dr Smoke's advice, which will include removing additional RAM, in the above link and post back here with how you got on. It's always nice to know when, or whether, things get fixed
Good luck.
Adrian

  • Help I think I have Macvx on my computer and I can't get rid of it.

    Help,
I think I have Macvx on my iMac late 2012 21.5 running the latest OS.
I am getting heaps of ads in my web browser.
I have seen similar question from other people and responses explaining to find and search for it in your applications menu but I can't find anything that relates to it or that was installed recently.
I have even looking in the library and through spotlight search searching the specific words Macvx and Vidx.
    Please help,
    Thank you very much.

If you are having an immediate problem with ads popping up see The Safe Mac » Adware Removal Guide and The Safe Mac » AdMedic.
Open Safari, select Preferences from the Safari menu. Click on Extensions icon in the toolbar. Disable all Extensions. If this stops your problem, then re-enable them one by one until the problem returns. Now remove that extension as it is causing the problem.

From user Joe Bailey comes this equally useful advice:
    The facts are:
    1. There is no anti-malware software that can detect 100% of the malware out there.
    2. There is no anti-malware that can detect everything targeting the Mac.
    3. The very best way to prevent the most attacks is for you as the user to be aware that
the most successful malware attacks rely on very sophisticated social engineering
techniques preying on human avarice, ****, and fear.
    4. Internet popups saying the FBI, NSA, Microsoft, your ISP has detected malware on
your computer is intended to entice you to install their malware thinking it is a
        protection against malware.
    5. Some of the anti-malware products on the market are worse than the malware
from which they purport to protect you.
    6. Be cautious where you go on the internet.
    7. Only download anything from sites you know are safe.
    8. Avoid links you receive in email, always be suspicious even if you get something
you think is from a friend, but you were not expecting.
    9. If there is any question in your mind, then assume it is malware.

My MacBook (10.5.8) is very slow and has significant problems loading will Snow Leopard (10.6.3) help or make my computer slower?
Also why does my Macbook make so much noise (The noise concerns me because it is so loud it sounds like the laptop will break down or something at any point)?

It depends on your Macbook model how to open the bottom case.
Anyway you need to open up the buttom case or keyboard panel to access the CPU fan like following.

If you think you can't do that by yourself, you'd better bring it to Apple Store Genius Bar or Authorized Servce Shop to tell them about the problem.

The following comes from user stevejobsfan0123. I have made minor changes to adapt to this presentation.
Fix Some Browser Pop-ups That Take Over Safari.
Common pop-ups include a message saying the government has seized your computer and you must pay to have it released (often called "Moneypak"), or a phony message saying that your computer has been infected, and you need to call a tech support number (sometimes claiming to be Apple) to get it resolved. First, understand that these pop-ups are not caused by a virus and your computer has not been affected. This "hijack" is limited to your web browser. Also understand that these messages are scams, so do not pay any money, call the listed number, or provide any personal information. This article will outline the solution to dismiss the pop-up.
    Quit Safari
Usually, these pop-ups will not go away by either clicking "OK" or "Cancel." Furthermore, several menus in the menu bar may become disabled and show in gray, including the option to quit Safari. You will likely have to force quit Safari. To do this, press Command + option + esc, select Safari, and press Force Quit.
    Relaunch Safari
If you relaunch Safari, the page will reopen. To prevent this from happening, hold down the 'Shift' key while opening Safari. This will prevent windows from the last time Safari was running from reopening.
This will not work in all cases. The shift key must be held at the right time, and in some cases, even if done correctly, the window reappears. In these circumstances, after force quitting Safari, turn off Wi-Fi or disconnect Ethernet, depending on how you connect to the Internet. Then relaunch Safari normally. It will try to reload the malicious webpage, but without a connection, it won't be able to. Navigate away from that page by entering a different URL, i.e. www.apple.com, and trying to load it. Now you can reconnect to the Internet, and the page you entered will appear rather than the malicious one.

Windows: How to Authorize or Deauthorize iTunes | PCWorld.
In iTunes you use the Authorize This Computer or De-authorize This Computer option under the Store menu in iTunes' menubar. For Windows use the ALT-S keys to access it. Or turn on Windows 7 and 8 iTunes menus: iTunes- Turning on iTunes menus in Windows 8 and 7.
More On De-authorizing Computers (contributed by user John Galt)
You can de-authorize individual computers, but only by using those computers. The only other option is to "de-authorize all" from your iTunes account.
      1. Open iTunes on a computer
      2. From the Store menu, select "View my Account..."
      3. Sign in with your Apple ID and password.
      4. Under "Computer Authorizations" select "De-authorize All".
      5. Authorize each computer you still have, as you may require.
You may only do this once per year.
After you "de-authorize all" your authorized computers, re-authorize each one as required.
If you have de-authorized all computers and need to do it again, but your year has not elapsed, then contact: Apple - Support - iTunes - Contact Us.

  • Don't think my computer is sleeping-

    Hi Guys
Bit of an odd situation. I have my computer quite near to my bed in a little room and so the numerous lights of my system (7 Power LEDs - G5, two monitors, USB hub, speakers and ext. HD and powerboard) illuminate my room to the point that i can't sleep with them ! So i taped most of them up with dark black electrical tape and turn off whatever i can.
My problem is that i don't think my computer is sleeping. Firstly i can hear HD wirr and possibly fans - there so quiet! and secondly i can *wake up* my computer by shaking the mouse - something you shouldn't be able to do. I've unplugged all peripherals including my non apple USB mouse. I've only unmounted and powered down my ext HD due to the position of the cables. The computer still only turns off the monitors and doesn't go to sleep fully. I haven't tried closing all open apps and i don't want that to be the solution as there is not point in my having to close all my programs in order to let my computer sleep.
The only thing i can think of right now is the fact that my computer is the dreaded Late 2004 / Oct 2004 Single Processor 1.8 Ghz G5 post G5 update. Do any other people with this same computer after applying the update have similar problems by any chance? Or is it just my computer? Can someone please think of something else that might be giving my poor little troublesome G5 insomnia ?
    Thanks for any replies
    DKR

Pretty obvious but did you check the sleep settings?
Have you tried to manually sleep your mac?
Sleep on a mac is a software/hardware dance where everything must be correct for it to work.
Usb devices (especially card readers) can mess it up. Do you have usb plugged into other devices (monitors, printers, etc.)?
    • Mac will not sleep if Applications/processes continuously writing to the Console logs.
Launch Console in Applications/Utilities and check both the console.log and system.log logs for blocks of recurring messages written therein that repeat at high frequency.
Note: the console.log file should open by default when you launch Console.

  • What is the best way to remotely access my sister in laws Mac who lives in another city to help her with her computer problems?

    as stated above
What is the best way to remotely access my sister in laws Mac who lives in another city to help her with her computer problems?

The best way? Get her to bring it to you, especially if she makes good cakes.
Apples Back to my Mac isn't really suitable for this - it is designed for a single person who wants their Apple ID on the system. It would mean she would have to share hers with you & you would also have to setup her Apple ID on your Mac - it is messy & causes trouble with iCloud, iTunes etc.
You can try Messages if she is able to begin a session with you, see the 'invite to share screen' in the menus, weirdly you need to use a service that isn't from Apple.
    Messages (Mavericks): Share your screen
It may be better if you to setup LogMeIn or GoToMyPC. They should 'dial out' & maintain a constant connection so you can login whenever the Mac is powered up. It won't, require a human to initiate the process at the other end, just be aware that the router may cause issues depending on what is configured, you may need settings to enable automatic port forwarding - it really depend on which option you choose.

  • If the battery pack is ruined do you think the computer will turn on if I use the charger

If the battery pack is ruined do you think the computer  will still work and turn on if I use the charger

how are you certian the battery is "ruined" ?  If water damaged, I wouldnt dare charge it.
Theres a big difference between dead (cycled out, old, dead) and RUINED / damaged/ cracked cells/
If damaged or a cell is broken, I wouldnt dare charge it.
Will it work if the batteries are utterly dead, no.

  • IPad and iPhone Wrongly Think My Computer is Not Subscribed to iTunes Match

I paid for iTunes Match, my Mac Book Pro shows it is on, my iTunes has it on, and yet when I turn iTunes Match on in my iPad and iPhone, they ask me for my password, then both tell me:
"You are not currently subscribed to iTunes Match.  Use iTune on your computer so subscribe."
I restarted everything, but the phone and pad still think the computer's not subscribed?
    THANKS

If you have songs from another account, sign-in with that account on your Mac Book and download them to your Mac.  See Downloading past purchases from the App Store, iBookstore, and iTunes Store: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2519
Then, sign in with your original ID and use the iTunes Store menu > Update iTunes match.
    Look at
iTunes Match: How to add a computer or iOS device to iTunes Match, http://support.apple.com/kb/ht4913
    It has important tips like:
When enabling iTunes Match on your iOS device, the music library on your iOS device will be deleted and then replaced with your music in iCloud.
Syncing music with iTunes will be disabled while iTunes Match is enabled on your iOS device.
By default, when adding an iOS device to iTunes Match, downloading over a cellular network is enabled. To disable downloading over cellular for iTunes Match, choose Settings > Music > Use Cellular Data > Off.
