Help! I've forgotten my master password to my imac.

I was recently going through a divorce, and had stored my entire household in a storage unit, including my iMac. Now I can't remember the Master password. Can anyone tell me how to reset it, PLEASE? Thanks so much!

Classic operating system passwords, which refer to passwords on 13 + year old operating systems are much different in setting.
You should at minimum be able to find your Darwin version if running some version of Mac OS X by booting with command-S on a wired USB keyboard.
That should help tell us your Mac OS X version.  This table comes from: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Darwin_(operating_system)

If you are indeed running a Classic operating system, here's how to reset your password:
Mac OS 9.1 - forgot password - reset
Here's how to reset your password with Apple Article to reset the password for OS X 10.6.8 and earlier, and 10.7 and later.
Note: Macs can't boot an operating system older than shipped with them, or a different Mac model or different version of the same Mac model's installer disc.  They can use newer retail discs as long as they meet specs.   Lastly no discs were included for Mac OS X 10.7 or later.

  • What do you do if you've forgotten the master password for reset and you've thrown out the gift reciept? HELP??????????

How do you reset the iPad if you've forgotten the master password and threw out the gift reciept?

Contact the person that gave it to you.  See if they have a receipt.
Apple doesn't use the term master password.
There are two different locking mechanisms:  passcode, prevents access to your data,  and activation lock, prevents use of device if stolen.  You do not want the students setting the activation lock.
If the passcode is set & forgotten , you can reload from backup or wipe ( first typed whip ) the device.
iPhone or iPad locked from incorrect passcode.
If you enter the wrong passcode six or more times, you'll see a message that says Ipad is disabled.
See how to restore from backup.  No back up on your computer, click on the triangle before "If you have never synced your device with iTunes, or you do not have access to a computer"

The problem arises when someone sets the activation lock which is set by logging onto your apple id then setting the appropriate option.   DEP is the preferred preventative.  It established your organization as the owner.  The student cannot set an activation log.

  • I have forgotten my Master password , help !

I have forgotten my Master password , what should I do , please be precise as I am barely computer literate .

Please clarify if you are talking about the Master Password associated with FileVault, or your standard everyday login password.
If you're talking about FileVault's Master Password it is possible to reset the it, but it still requires all users with FileVault-protected accounts to know their passwords. If a user has forgotten his or her login password, and you have forgotten the master password, there is no way to recover the user's data.
If you forget the master password, you can reset it, but you must know the passwords for any accounts with FileVault enabled:
    1.
As an administrator user, delete the master password keychain file (/Library/Keychains/FileVaultMaster.keychain). When the master password keychain is deleted, Mac OS X assumes that no master password is set yet.
    2.
In Security preferences, set a new master password.
    3.
Log in to each account that has FileVault turned on, and use Accounts preferences to reset the password for each account.

  • I have an old emac I want to use and have forgotten the master password. Is there anyway to reset it?

How to reset master password for an OLD emac.

Thanks. I wish I had that info earlier. Unfortunately I got a set of OS emac installation disks and tried to install and start over  which basically erased everything. There were 16 disks and when I got to disk twelve it "failed" and asked to try again. I went through the whole process again and same message again.
Now I am stuck with the installer which wants me to install disc 2 to continue installation. It won't let me do anything else.
I know there must be a way to erase and start over but I'm not sure where to start.  Any ideas?

  • Help resetting a forgotten log in password

I forgot my password to log into my MacBoook Air, using OSX 10. Rats. I was told that I can reset the password by opening and using password utility from OSX recovery and that there is an article on Apple support that will tell me how. I looked and can't find the article. Can anyone suggest how to do this? I am stuck on my Log In screen feeling silly about resetting my password to keep my kids off of the computer - and then forgetting the password.I am pretty sure I have the latest version of OSX - 10.7 - on the computer. As a first time user I would also appreciate someone letting me know if I posted in the right Community.

If the user account is associated with an Apple ID, and you know the Apple ID password, then maybe the Apple ID can be used to reset your user account password.
Otherwise*, start up in Recovery mode. When the OS X Utilities window appears, select
              Utilities ▹ Terminal
from the menu bar at the top of the screen—not from any of the items in the OS X Utilities window.
In the window that opens, type this:
    res
Press the tab key. The partial command you typed will automatically be completed to this:
    resetpassword
Press return. A Reset Password window opens. Close the Terminal window to get it out of the way.
Select your startup volume ("Macintosh HD," unless you gave it a different name) if not already selected.
Select your username from the menu labeled Select the user account if not already selected.
Follow the prompts to reset the password. It's safest to choose a password that includes only the characters a-z, A-Z, and 0-9.
    Select
               ▹ Restart
    from the menu bar.
You should now be able to log in with the new password, but your Keychain will be reset (empty.) If you've forgotten the Keychain password (which is ordinarily the same as your login password), there's no way to recover it.
*Note: If you've activated FileVault, this procedure doesn't apply. Follow instead these instructions.

  • Master Password Change w/o Install Disks

    12/07
    Greetings:
I have a friend that has forgotten his master password; plus, he never received the install dvd's with his new iMac (10.5.4. I know that the master password can be changed with install dvd. Any help to get this changed will be appreciated.
    Mike

    The following may work:
You can reset the password as follows:
To start, reboot in safe mode.
At the prompt enter the following:
    /sbin/fsck -fy
Press RETURN. If you receive this message: ** The volume (nameofvolume) appears to be OK then continue to the next command. If you receive this message: *** FILE SYSTEM WAS MODIFIED *** then repeat the above command until you receive the OK message. If you repeat the command seven times without receiving the OK message then you cannot repair the drive and should not continue.
    /sbin/mount -uw /
Then, type in pressing RETURN after each:
    /usr/libexec/registermach_bootstrapservers /etc/mach_init.d
    cd /var/db/netinfo
    netinfod -s local
    SystemStarter
    passwd root
You’ll be asked to come up with a new password. If you want to change a login’s password, substitute ‘root’ with the username.
    After that, enter
    reboot

  • Master Password Hint?

I see when changing the master password, there is an option to enter a hint. I have forgotten my master password and was wondering where I could find the hint I entered when I initially set it.
Thank you very much for your assistance.

    thbarnes,
    Welcome to Apple Discussions.
Mac Help says...Adding a password hint: If you have trouble remembering your password, you can have a hint appear after the third time you try unsuccessfully to log in. You'll also see the hint if you fail three times to enter a correct password when you install software or perform other tasks that require your password.;~)

The master password protects saved passwords in Thunderbird and has nothing to do with connecting to your providers server. You need to work with your email provider if you have forgotten your email password. Go to their email help site and look for a link to reset your password.
If you are truly working with a forgotten master password this article tells you how to remove it.
