HELP i've lost 2000 songs in a click of a button!

i bought an external hard drive and transfered all of my itunes library over to it. I just went onto itunes and purchased a few songs, and it asked me about syncing- i said yes. I've just checked my ipod and i only have 8 songs (that i purchased) on it. over 2000 songs have come off it. I can still see them on the itunes library, but they wont sync.
I assume that perhaps something is pointing at the wrong drive and i am very worried that i've really messed up
PLEASE SOMEONE HELP! 8 SONGS!!!! It'd be funny if i werent panicking!!!
THanks in advance guys

It sounds like all your music still exists on your computer. Essentially you hid your music files from iTunes when you moved it. Since iTunes uses a database file to store all the info about your music and it can find that file it knows all your songs and show that in the library pane. Included in this info is the location of the music and since you moved it iTunes can't find the actual music file. If you try to play a song in iTunes it will likely show an exclamation point which is the "I can't find this song" alarm. To solve your problem I suggest following the instructions located here http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=305451
Once iTunes can locate your music files then connect your iPod and iTunes will transfer all the music back.

  • My itune library will not let me play any songs. I click the play button and it won't start the song.

Everytime i open itunes, it says that the songs cannot be played for some reason. I click the play button and it won't play a song.

Did you already try to reset the phone by holding the sleep and home button for about 10sec, until the Apple logo comes back again? You will not lose data by resetting your device, but it can cure some glitches.

  • Help Please- just lost 5600 songs

I have two things going very wrong, please help.
1.I have had trouble dropping songs into iTunes. i have searched the forums and I am very frustrated at the amount of people having the same problem with no resolution. i tried to drop 20 concerts into iTunes and only 2 showed up. These shows play in Quicktime and I know that they're not all corrupt. i doubt any of them are. I tried saving to a flash drive and they still wouldn't drop in. I tried importing the shows, tried importing the songs, but to no avail. I tried saving the music into another folder on the desktop and they still wouldn't drop into iTunes.
    2. This is the biggie. My harddrive isn't very big so after I save the music onto my ipod i have to erase it. So I have 5000 songs that can't play because they're not stored onto the hard drive anymore. So I selected all of the songs that aren't able to play anymore and erased them from iTunes. I recently synced the ipod and now I've lost all 5600 songs. Please help before I ruin anything else.
    Thanks,
    -Norman

It's very frustrating because I had tried to add the files like you said, but to no avail. But there hasn't been a reason stated as to why we can't add the files. The only answer seems to be that that's the way it is and we'll have to live with it. I know the files aren't corrupt, the format is the same, they're from a sharing website and there's no copyright protection or anything like that on them. iTunes just doesn't do it. I'm kinda sick to my stomach right now
And now i just lost 5600 songs

  • Help!  Just lost 1200 songs!

I just updated my itunes on my computer, plugged in my ipod and it deleted over 1200 songs on my ipod. These songs were deleted off my computer for space...how can i get them back. Thanks sooo much for any help.

Restore them from yourbackup as you will probably not be able to get them off the iPod.
You can try 3rd party apps like Senuti or yamipod.

  • Laptop stolen, lost 2000 songs, what now?

I know itTune is a "one way street" iTunes to IPod but is there any fix for this? I have my iPod but my laptop was stolen and I don't what will happen when I synch to my new laptop. Will the iPod go crazy since the source songs aren't in the new version?

    Shelly,
Here is a small ray of hope.....
As long as you have not reloaded much (or any) new information to the iPod, the following links will direct you to software that has a chance of recovering some or all of your iPod’s music files. Most are not shareware or freeware, so you may have to spend a little money..... Several members here have gotten good results from Recover4All.
This PodSalvage software will only work with Macs running OS X. See the PodSalvage page at SubRosaSoft.com: http://www.subrosasoft.com/MacSoftware/index.php?mainpage=product_info&productsid=2
This link will give you several 'Erased iPod' recovery resources for both Mac and Windows users:
    http://forums.ipodlounge.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=45619
Make sure you read through many of the posts on the iLounge – some folks had good results, others had poor results. There seems to be a split camp on the effectiveness of recovery programs.
Either way, strongly consider a backup strategy after you recover/replace your music (as you already know)

  • Lost 6k songs.. help...

My computer had to be reformatted, and although the tech said he made back up, he didn't. I lost 6k songs on my computer. I still have them on my ipod. Is there a way to get the songs from my ipod back onto my computer?
    Thanks for any help.

If you have any iTMS purchases the transfer of purchased content from the iPod to authorised computers has been introduced with iTunes 7. A paragraph on it has been added to this article: Transfer iTunes Store purchases using iPod
The transfer of non iTMS content such as songs imported from CD is designed by default to be one way from iTunes to iPod. However there is a manual method of accessing the iPod's hard drive and copying songs back to iTunes on Windows. The procedure is a bit involved and it won't recover playlists but if you're interested it's posted in this thread: MacMuse - iPod to iTunes
If you prefer something more automated then there are a number of third party utilities that you can use to retrieve the music files and playlists from your iPod. This is just a selection, you'll find that they have varying degrees of functionality and some will transfer movies, videos, photos and games as well. Have a look at the web pages and documentation, they are generally quite straightforward. You can also read reviews of some of them here: Wired News - Rescue Your Stranded Tunes
    YamiPod Mac and Windows Versions
    iGadget Windows Only
iPod Access Mac and Windows Versions
    PodUtil Mac and Windows Versions
    iPodCopy Mac and Windows Versions
    TuneJack Windows Only
    CopyPod Windows Only
If your iPod is set to update automatically take care when connecting back to your computer and an empty iTunes. You will get a message that your iPod is linked to a different library and asking if you want to link to this one and replace all your songs etc, press "Cancel". Pressing "Erase and Sync" will irretrievably remove all songs from your iPod. Your iPod should appear in the iTunes source list from where you can change the update setting to manual and use your iPod without the risk of accidentally erasing it. Also when using a lot of the utilities your iPod needs to be enabled for disc use, changing to manual update will do this by default. Check the "manually manage music and videos" box in Summary then press the Apply button: Managing content manually on iPod
Whichever of these retrieval methods you choose, keep your iPod in manual mode until you have reloaded your iTunes and you are happy with your playlists etc then it will be safe to return it auto-sync again. I would also advise that you get yourself an external hard drive and back your stuff up in case you have problems again. External drives are comparatively inexpensive these days and you can get loads of storage for a reasonable outlay.

  • Lost purchased songs, help!

I need help trying to retrieve my songs (about 10) that I purchased through iTunes. I checked in the drive that it is set to go in as well as my entire computer, and all are gone. I checked in my iTunes account under 'Previously Purchased' and they show there with the dates and everything. How can I get them back, or are they gone for ever?? Also, I think this happened after I had selected to sync my music, did that delete them?? Please help. I would like to have the songs I paid for come back.

You can use Explorer to search your computer for missing songs.
On the Start menu, click "Search".
    Select "All Files and folders".
In the "All or part of the file name" field, type the song name and then click "Search".
If you see the file you are looking for in the Search Results window, you can add it back into your iTunes library.
See: How to add songs from your hard drive to iTunes.
If you've done all this and they are gone, are they still on your iPod?
If you are using iTunes version 7 or later, then you can transfer purchased iTunes store music from the iPod to an authorized computer by using the "file/transfer purchases from iPod" menu. Note that the maximum of 5 authorized computers applies here.

  • I've copied my itunes library onto an external hard drive.  Is there any way I can do this and delete songs from my PC without also deleting from the external drive? Already lost two songs!!!

I've copied my itunes library onto an external hard drive.  Is there any way I can do this and delete songs from my PC without also deleting from the external drive? Already lost two songs!!!  I just want a back up - using a work PC and don't want others accessing my songs.  Hope someone can help.  Thanks!

I see. To get a better idea of what is being stored where please download and run the script iTunesInfo which should output something like this:
I'm interested in the block of 4 results starting ITL location. If your profile name shows up somewhere replace it with <Name>.  It is also worth checking under Edit > Preferences > Advanced to see where iTunes thinks your media is supposed to go. My script estimates the setting based on the location of the first media file it can actually find.

  • HT1339 I have an ipod classic.  I have approx. 2000 songs on it.  WHen I move the settings to shuffle all music, the music stops in the middle of the song and moves on to the next one.  It happens every other song or so.

I have an Ipod classic 120gb.  I have approximately 2000 songs on it.  When I put it on shuffle to play it, it stops in the middle of songs and moves to the next.  This happens every other two songs or so.  Please help!

Try playing the song again and if it does it in the same spot on both your ipod and itunes then you have a corrupted file. You need to re-download the song. Don't worry, this is free if you bought it on iTunes. First, verify that you did buy the song on iTunes and not anywhere else. Go to the iTunes store. On the right hand side of the window there is a column named quick links. Look for "Purchased" about 2/3 of the way down. Click on it. The next window that shows up should show you all the tunes you have bought. Find your tune and you'll see that is says "downloaded." Now you know you have the tune.
Now go back to your music library on the left hand column of the window. Click on Music. Find that tune that is giving you the problem. Delete the song.
Now go back to the iTunes store like before and go back to your "purchased" list. The page needs to be reloaded Press the back button and then click "purchased" again on iTunes so the list reloads. Find your tune again. Now instead of it saying "Downloaded," it has a picture of a cloud with an arrow pointing down. Click on it and the tune will download again with, I hope, no problems. I hope this helps.

  • Help!  I want my songs back!

I plugged in my Iphone 4 to my computer and it began to sync.  Now I have lost some of my most recently purchased songs.  I've never had this happen before.  I see all of the songs in my past purchases on my itunes account but they are not in my Itunes on my phone.  Help!  I want my songs back!

so then technically I can't transfer the songs off my ipod to my itunes library?  since it is one 1 transfer from pc to ipod...correct?  So when I synch my ipod the warning screen comes up and says "there are content not in the library, erase and synch library to Itunes, only purchased songs can transfer."   Can I leave the songs on my ipod and when I purchase new songs to itunes I can still transfer those correct?  while having the others on there that wont transfer?

  • Hi, I've lost all song data ( besides song name) on 1,100 WAV files. Does anyone know an app or fix that can identify Album & Artist (& maybe album art) on these files? Thanks

Hi, I've lost all song data ( besides song name) on 1,100 WAV files. Does anyone know an app or fix that can identify Album & Artist (& maybe album art) on these files? Thanks
    Dermot

    Hi John,
A major drawback with using wav for storage is that it doesn't carry a tag. This means that in the event of a corrupted library the only information remaining is the filename. Other data may be stored in the path but iTunes doesn't know how to get it. I understand that you need this format for your workflow with Diamond Cut, but that makes it all the more important that you backup your iTunes database on a regular basis.
Provided that you still have the tracks in their artist and album folders and haven't let iTunes "reorganise" them you should be able to restore some useful metadata using my script TagFromFilename. The script reads the path and filename, and provided these are in the normal layout of <Path>\<Artist>\<Album>\## <Name>.<Ext> can restore Artist, Album Artist, Track Name and Track Number. If your files have a different but predicatable layout with the same information, e.g. the data is all in the filename, then I could create a suitable version of the script to get the data into iTunes. I recommend you disable both the Keep... and Copy... options in iTunes advanced preferences before adding files to the iTunes database. Ideally you also want a complete backup of your correctly structured folders in case you need to pull copies back from it.
As stated earlier, uninstalling iTunes before the upgrade wouldn't have helped. The crucial thing before any upgrade is to backup all user data from the drive that will be wiped. Typically the iTunes database lives in C:\Users\<User>\Music\iTunes on Vista or Windows 7. The crucial file is called iTunes Library.itl. You seem fairly certain that you don't have a backup database that you could restore but an exhaustive search of your hard drive for files of the form *.itl might still be worth doing. If you find any apart from the active library we can discuss how you open them to see if they are useful.
