  • I am writing to this forum to ask for help in determining whether Aperture will satisfy my needs when I switch from Windows to MAC in the near future.

I am writing to this forum to ask for help in determining whether Aperture will satisfy my needs when I switch from Windows to MAC in the near future.
I am currently using Photoshop Elements 8 on Windows 7.  After several years of use, I am self taught and adequately proficient for an amateur.  What I didn't realize (until I started researching my upcoming migration on the Internet) is that I actually use PE8 for two functions: digital asset management and digital editing.
Regarding Digital Asset Management: My research leads me to understand that PE on MAC does not provide the same level of organizational capability that I am used to having on Windows, instead providing Adobe's Bridge which does not look very robust.  Furthermore, iPhoto, which come on MAC will not support the hierarchical keyword tagging that I require to organize my library of photos. The two SW applications which I am thinking of switching to are either Aperture or Adobe's Lightroom.  Frankly, I'm thinking that it would be smoother to stay within the Apple product line.
So the remaining question is whether Aperture will support my digital editing needs. The tweaks that I do to my photos are not very complex (no, I do not want to put people's heads on other animal bodies).  But could someone who uses Aperture tell me whether It will allow me to do the following kinds of edits?:
    - If I have a photo where someone's face is too shadowed, can I lighten just that person's face, and leave the rest of the photo as-is?
    - if I have a photo where the background is cluttered (eg, 2 people in front of the Parthenon which is undergoing renovation), can I remove just the construction cranes?
    - Can it splice together several separate photos to give a panoramic?
If, once I get Aperture, I find that it cannot enable the kinds of editing that I do, I would probably get PE11 in the future. However, if people in this forum tell me that Aperture will definitely not  support the kinds of editing which I've described in the previous paragraph, I would prefer to get PE11 with my initial configuration (since someone will be helping me with my migration).
Thanks in advance for your consideration and help!

I am concerned, however,  about using a non-Apple Digital Asset Manager in OSX. I would really like to avoid integration problems. Is using PE11 to import and catalog my digital photos likely to cause conflicts?
Thanks for any insight on this
    Amy,
Not so much conflicts as maybe a little less seamless integration with Apple software and perhaps some third-party software providers in the Mac App Store where some programs build in direct access to iPhoto and Aperture libraries for getting images into those programs easily. Typically, there is a manual command to go to Finder (think Windows Explorer) to browse folders.
One caution to mention however, is that the organization you set-up in PE Organizer is unlikely to transfer over to either iPhoto or Aperture if you decide to change at some point.
The only real stumbling block that I see in your opening comment is that you want hierarchical keywording (Kirby or Léonie can go into the details on keywording limitations as I stay at one level). If you can work with the keywording schemes of either iPhoto or Aperture, then using PE for your external editor (either program supports setting an external editor) would probably be ideal since you know PE well. This is the idea with the Mac App Store version of PE (editor with no organizer).
Note - I use Photoshop CS6 (full version) with Aperture and it works really well. The only downside is that Aperture has to make either a TIFF or PSD file to send to an external editor so that the original file is protected by not sending it to the pixel editor. While TIFF or PSD files protect the integrity of the image information without degrading it, they are typically much larger file sizes on disk than either RAW or JPEG files. Therefore, your library size (iPhoto or Aperture) will balloon quite a bit if you send a lot of files to external editors.
One other possibility for an external editor would be a program called Pixelmator. It is pretty similar to early versions of Photoshop, but built for Mac. Other than the panoramics you want, it will do most pixel editing that PE can do. It is not an organizer, so it is built to go with either iPhoto or Aperture. It does have differences in how you complete certain procedures, so there is bit of a learning curve when you are used to doing it the Adobe way.

After upgrading to Aperture 3 I had to 'upgrade' all files. When this was done, there was an Aperture 3 library and the original Aperture 2 library. Are the two libraries identical and can I safely trash the Aperture 2 library?

If the upgrade completed successfully and you are running Aperture 3 on the converted library and you're sure all the images that were in the old library are in the new library then you could delete the Aperture 2 library.
However I'm the paranoid type and when it comes to deleting images I'm always hesitant. If you can fine a place to archive the old library that  would be your a better option.
At a minimum I would keep the old library around for a month or so after switching to Aperture 3 just to make sure in case something pops up.

  • Help, everytime I try to rebuild my library, aperture crashes (was my aperture library won't open)

I have tried to recover my aperture library through all methods specified by apple. Rebuild was my last option. Is this library lost for good? It is with all my masters and organized painstakingly over the last year.
I am running osx v10.6.7 on an intel 17" macbook pro. The library is 250GB on an external 5ooGB  Harddrive. Aperture 3 with the latest version.

  • Please help me Automate an Aperture/Photoshop workflow

I'm trying to streamline the process of exporting a RAW file from Aperture to Photoshop for editing and then re-importing it into Aperture. I have zero experience with Automator, but someone else on the Discussions site was kind enough to share hte Automator process he uses for this.
Problem is, I can't get mine to work (or I don't know how to make it work).
I created a folder called "Photoshop-IN" where I would export the RAW files from Aperture that need editing. Then I created a folder called "Aperture-IN" where the completed Photoshop files would be exported for re-import into Aperture. Then I created this workflow:
    http://homepage.mac.com/chriskresser/PhotoAlbum16.html
I think the workflows are correct, but I don't know what to do at this point. The original poster said something about making them "watched folders", but I have no idea what that means or how to do that.
To test the workflows, I tried exporting a RAW photo from Aperture to a "Photoshop-IN" folder. Then I opened Automator and clicked the play button for the designated workflow. It tells me it executed properly, but nothing happens. The CR2 file wasn't opened in Photoshop, is still in the folder, and didn't get moved to the trash.
I also tested the other workflow (getting PSD file back into Aperture), and that doesn't seem to be working either. With this workflow, I get the following message. "Aperture got an error. Some parameter wasn't understood. (-1715)".
What am I doing wrong? I realize that this might be pretty far off topic, as it is more a question of how to use Automator and possibly AppleScript. But any help would be appreciated, including direction to some resources where I could learn more about Automator (the help section is woefully inadequate!)
    Thanks again,

Your PS-in workflow is too complex, all it needs is a Finder action to open in PS:
    http://www.azurevision.co.uk/aperture/open-in-ps-action.jpg
Then File>Save as Plug-in..., choose 'Folder Actions' and then where it asks what folder to attach it to, navigate to your folder. Now, every file that is copied, moved or saved into that folder will be opened in PS.
The import into Aperture workflow is mostly OK, but you are passing a folder from the first action, not files. Try adding a 'Get Folder Contents' action just after the first action. With a bit of jiggling around and using the two actions of that workflow you should be able to save it as a folder action.

    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=1292903
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=1372571
Basically these export a RAW file out to a watched folder (as you are trying to do), but instead of saving it out and re-importing into Aperture, a duplicate file is made in Aperture by using 'Open in external editor' and saving the converted file into that.

  • HELP PLEASE! Export Aperture 1 Library and Import to Aperture 3? Or another way to transfer files WITH changes into new MacBook Pro?

    Hi everyone,
I recently purchased a new MacBook pro with Retina display, to better manage Aperture and Photoshop. I took the advice of the genius (and after spending all night messing with permissions, etc.), opted out of using Setup Assistant or Migration Assistant and decided to transfer my files manually (as the two systems weren't merging properly the first time -- it was a giant mess). Long story short, I tried to transfer everything from my previous MacBook (operating on 10.5.8 with Aperture 1), and Aperture 3 couldn't handle it. It was crashing, and crashing so badly that NO button could be activated in the program (I FINALLY got Aperture working by disabling previews, and by moving from a managed library to a referenced library).
I initially dragged and dropped all photos from my previous MacBook to my external, and imported. I obviously lost folders, edit history and any other information that I needed to know what edits had been done on the file. Additionally, any movie that had been imported into Aperture was corrupt (the file was not transferring over correctly). I searched and searched for different methods, and finally found that I could export each project from my original MacBook as a "Library" and consolidate masters, or not, etc. I took the time and did this for each project. When I went to import these into Aperture 3, it said I was not able to because the libraries were from a previous version of Aperture.
Is there any way to bypass this? Or another way to transfer my projects? I understand I won't be able to do this for my entire library... but I'm wondering if there's any way to transfer my changes made, projects and details from Aperture 1 to Aperture 3? (and for those who might pose upgrading my original MacBook as an option, I cannot. It's too old. I think the best I could uprade to is Aperture 2, IF i can update the OS. Though, I definitely don't think I should be forced to do that since I've aleady re-invested in a new computer, AND had to re-buy Aperture for the new one.
Any/all advice is VERY much appreciated, as I really want to move forward and FINALLY start appreciating this program and computer (i.e. my investment) and move forward business wise. Thank you!

    Hi Jack,
Thanks for responding (as it seems as though no one else has been able to provide any insight as of yet)! Not sure if you saw my recent post, but the version of Aperture on the 2008 MacBook has been upgraded to 3.1.2 (not sure how; I bought it in 2009, but only have OS X 10.5.8... which apparently can't house 3.1.2 of Aperture, but hey, like many other anomalies i'm encountering, I'm no longer surprised!). I am unable to upgrade it any further, as it warns me that my OS X does not fit the requirements. I exported the projects as libraries; however, like I posted before, apparently these are from too old of a version for the new Aperture (3.3.1) to handle and import.
It's getting to the point where I'd almost pay to upgrade the OS X on my previous MacBook (10.5.8) to something newer in order to THEN update Aperture to a newer version; however, my previous MacBook simply cannot handle this (the specs are awful -- hence my decision to save up and upgrade to the newest MBP with Retina).
I've spent hours upon hours transferring files, libraries as projects, previews, versions, even masters (though, apparently some of them aren't accessible?) with no luck. I've rebuilt the library and reprocessed everything. And this is all after having to return one MBP already since Aperture 3.3.1 is glitch-y as it is, and froze everything for having a "managed library". So, now that I know that I have to deal with a referenced library in Aperture... I just need to actually transfer my previous library to my new one (hopefully WITH adjustments since these are years worth of photos and work).
Again, any help is appreciated. I've lost enough sleep, time, and vision health over this at this point.
Also, I know Migration Assistant is an option, I was told that it wouldn't work properly anyway because of the different operating systems, and the potential for problems.

  • Help!  Images in Aperture are dark and oversaturated...

I just got a new MacBook Pro, so I decided to download the Aperture demo to give it a try. I have been working with Lightroom and wanted to compare the two.
So I imported my first folder of images from some conference events I shot. My first impression was that images appeared a bit dark, contrasty and oversaturated, but I figured that was probably a result of underexposure, since I didn't have a lot of light to work with, or possibly from working with flash in dark rooms.
I went through and opened up all the photos and pulled-down highlights and did color-correction (flesh tones were a bit red). Then I uploaded photos to SmugMug... imagine my surprise to see everything appear flat and light and undersaturated. I couldn't figure it out... I looked through Aperture for possible explanations... proofing wasn't on so that wasn't it. Exported images were given sRGB profile (as opposed to Adobe RGB). I checked them in both Safari and Firefox... same results. Then I went back to the originals and opened them in Preview... they were lighter and less-contrasty than Aperture showed them to be. They looked like they should have looked. (By the way, I am working with JPEGs taken in the sRGB color space.)
So what happened in Aperture? Did something happen on import? I have searched all over the internet and can't seem to find anyone else having this same problem.
    Help!
    -Erin

Okay, may have posted prematurely... images look the same in Aperture as they do in Photoshop and Lightroom. So it is something weird with how they display in Preview and online...
Grrrr! I hate this color management crap!

  • HELP!!! Aperture can't find original files!

Help!!! I imported a 64 Gig SD Card into Aperture for an engagement shoot. It imported the files, about 2,000 CR2 files.  I had to clear the SD card to do another shoot.  When I returned to Aperture, it shows a thumbnail of the file, but yellow exclamation point saying ORIGINAL IMAGE NOT FOUND!!!  I'm guessing Aperture tried saving original files to the SD card and NOT my hard drive.  When I was clearing the card, highlighted the files and put them in the trash on my IMAC.  Then I emptied the trash.  I also re-formatted the card on my Canon.  So... I have downloaded Stellar Phoenix Data Recovery, Data Rescue 3, and ISkysoft Data Recovery to see if they will either recover files I emptied from my trash, OR recover the files on the SD card.  I can't find the files!  To this point, this my best work as a photographer.  I'm mortified!  If someone will help me I will be indebted to you forever.  Thank you!

If you really deleted the files, there is little hope, but data recovery.
If you have you not restarted your mac, since you imported the images, don't do it., before checking the caches. Sometimes Aperture will write to the $TMPDIR, if the drive it trying to write to gets offline during import.
Check these system folders, if youcan  find any cr2 files:
    Quit Aperture.
Open a Terminal window and enter the following two line:
    open $TMPDIR
This will open a Finder window with cryptically named folders. Dive into them and look for Aperture's Media cache folder. Are there any image files in the folder "com.apple.Aperture"?
Sometimes Aperture will write to that directory, if it cannot write to the Aperture library.
    Also check the following location:
    open /tmp
Can you find any images in the these two caches?
When I returned to Aperture, it shows a thumbnail of the file, but yellow exclamation point saying ORIGINAL IMAGE NOT FOUND!!!  I'm guessing Aperture tried saving original files to the SD card and NOT my hard drive.
    Are you using Aperture 3.5.1?
This version will tell you, where the missing originals should be, when you select the thumbnails and use the command "File > Show in Finder". When I try this, I get a panel showing the path to the missing original. Does that really point to a file on your SD card?
What are your Import settings in Aperture? What is set in the "Store files" option? "In the Aperture library " or something else?

  • Why was the Aperture 1.0 promotion limited in time?

    Dear Apple,
I am a photobook designer and Aperture is a great help to sort out my clients photos.
I love Apple, I really like the way Aperture is going... but... I was one of the first people to buy Aperture 1.0. A very costly purchase because:
a - at the time Aperture was priced rather high (I paid 700 CHF for it)
b - at the time, I had an Intel G5 first generation (I always tend to buy the new products...) and Aperture didn't work on it. So I bought an Intel based iMac to run Aperture.
Then, the price dropped... yaouch... that was a bit hard to swallow, but coming from an International Company background, I know that pricing is a difficult exercice, so I accepted that, well, that I was just a "pricing victim".
A few months back, a photographer friend tells me about the aperture pricing promotion so I log onto the site and quickly send out the form.
Two months go by and no answer. So I contact support who tells me that I sent my request too late. As I wasn't very happy they asked me to send an email to the external company who took care of your promotion. No answer. After a reminder, I receive a very unpolite answer telling me that I was too late and that's all! (btw I don't like that company, they are a bit rude!)
So, all this to say... since you have a database with the names of the people who purchased Aperture 1.0, why didn't you write to us? and why limit this promotion in time? and why use a rude company to deal with it?
I would still like to receive my voucher so I can buy some new fun apple stuff on the shop!!!
    Thanks for listening!
iMac Intel   Mac OS X (10.4.7)

How can it be too late? The promotion is still on the Aperture web page, if it is by now too late the promotion should be taken of the web. The first time the promotion was announced I found it on the US web site and mailed it to the US. I bought Aperture in Swiss, but at that time the promotion was not yet on the Swiss or European sites. I of course never heard anything about it from the US company (while some UK people got the voucher from the US). Just a week ago I decided to look again and noticed the promotion too on the Swiss site. I printed out the form and sent it of last week.

  • Help! All referenced Aperture images offline after Time Machine restore!

Okay, I finally decided to upgrade the internal drive of my 15" MBP from the 250 stocker to a 640 WD drive. I did a Time Machine backup right before swapping the drives, then restored from backup. Everything seems to have transferred fine, except for Aperture. All the photo's metadata is still there, all my various projects and everything are fine, but the actual photos are nowhere to be found. They were all referenced from my iPhoto library. When I go File>locate referenced files, Macintosh HD is offline (which i'm guessing is my old HD). Thing is, under the Not Found column, it says 0..... Can someone please help me with this??

So I just had the same problem. I had restored my whole disk drive from a backup after Apple replaced the hard drive.
All images that were referenced on the internal drive were listed as offline even after a Aperture DB rebuild and a disk drive identically named to the original.
Procedure: first test this on a few files, then you can do the whole library.
Select any project with multiple pictures that are referenced and have a red tag indicating offline. Do a select all on the images in that project, even if some do not have offline indicated. After the selection use File -> Locate Referenced Files.
Uncheck the box that says "Show Only Referenced Files" Select one of the files that you know has a status of offline. Next, in the bottom window, navigate to that exact file and select it. Click the Reconnect All button, it may take a few minutes, but when it is done the number of offline files will have decreased and the new number of online files will be reflected.
The Reconnect All feature is smart enough to figure out the folder hierarchy for your whole library. I subsequently used the HUD to select all 14,300 "offline" images in the library, I then selected one and told it to Reconnect All as above. Took about 15 minutes but at least there was a progress bar.
    Good Luck
