HELP !– iBook and Sprite don't mix

I need some help. My daughter is home from college for the break and was working on a paper when shen dozed off and spilled some Sprite onto her iBook. Needless to say all is not well. At the advice of the techs at the local Genius bar I pulled out the RAM chip and keyboard and the Airport card and dryed everything the best I can. The laptop then sat for 2 days in order to get everything to dry inside. I put it together last night and got nothing. I am desperate for any suggestions or help on somehow recovering this iBook or finding her another inexpensive ne wor refurbished. I lost my job in November and any money i have is going to her tuition and books for next semester. Any and all help is greatly appreciated. I have 2 weeks before she heads back to school. Thanks in advance

Check with your insurance company or the credit card company you used to purchase the computer (if you did) whether their insurance covers such accidents without affecting your deductable or your coverage. If not, this is a good lesson to never again allow food or drink near a computer. These repair shops may offer a less expensive solution:

  • IBook and champagne don't mix!

A few nights ago I spilled a glass of champagne into the keyboard of my iBook G3. ... Don't ask ...
So, here's the thing. It'll start up. I hear the familiar "bong." The cap lock light come on when the key in pressed. The screen is black.
But that's all ... It's sticky (but not dripping) under the keyboard, and so far I've been unable to dig any deeper - mostly because of a few stubborn screws that won't come loose.
I've tried everything I can think of: Firewire boot to my G4, rebooting PRAM.
I hate to lose this little sucker. It's not a huge data loss. Most everything's on one of my other two Macs.
    Is there any hope?

Hi, Jim. Welcome to Apple Discussions, but so sorry this is what has brought you here.
    Is there any hope?
Probably not much. It likely took out the logic board and/or the display.
Disassembly instructions can be found here:
    http://www.ifixit.com/Guide/50.0.0.html
    and here:
    http://www.powerbooktech.com/knowledge,type-6.htm
You may want to try taking it apart and gently wiping off the stickiness with a slightly damp lint-free cloth or Mr. Clean Magic Eraser (just the very end dampened with distilled water and any excess water squeezed out). Leave it apart for several days to dry off completely, but put it somewhere where it won't be subjected to dust. (No heat or fans; air dry only.)
Then reassemble it and cross your fingers and hope for best when you push the power button. I am not optimistic.
Sending it in to a recovery service would probably cost more than it would be worth, and none guarantee that they can get it up and running again. You could be out big bucks and still not have it working. If you had important files with no back up, it might be worth it, but from what you've indicated about your situation, I won't even bother giving you a link.
On the bright side, those new MacBooks look pretty nice. You've given yourself a perfect excuse to upgrade.
    Good luck.

  • Can anyone help me I downloaded drake ablum and it said it comes with digital booklet but I don't see it and I downloaded the iBook and still don't see it I need help

Your iTunes Digital Booklet should appear on the PDF shelf in iBooks.

  • IPhoto '08 and '06 don't mix?????

just bought my beautiful new iMac 2.4gmz, 20", of course it has iLife '08...I have set up a network with my mini by the stereo and TV, so I can show slide shows of photos from the shared iPhoto library for guests(to bore them and get them to leave). The iMac has apprently done some "rearranging" of the files and left its mark on them, so that I can no longer access the iPhoto library with the mini becuase it is iPhoto '06, and the iMac has '08 "a newer version". Is there any alternative to buying iLife '08 for a computer that will be barely used?

No, there is no way that v6 can read a v7 library.

  • Blackberry Bluetooth and Macs don't mix

One of the best features I had with a Nokia smartphone was how effortlessly it would sync with my bluetooth macintosh using iSync.  Just absolutely painless.
The Blackberry Pearl has bluetooth -- but it won't communicate with a Mac with either Missing Sync or PocketMac.   This seems such a natural fit (yes, even if one is supposed to use USB to keep the BB charged).
RIM -- there is so much potential here.   Please don't let the opportunity go by.

Its true, Bluetooth communication with Pocketmac and BlackBerry isn't currently supported.   As you say, it'd be nice if that'd change in the future.   Honestly, I'd be suprised if it didn't.
I have talked with Mac users who have had sucess transfering thier Address book to the Mac, but bidirectional communication generally dosn't work.

  • HT4059 What if I purchased the WRONG ibook and I don't want it?  How do i cancel it?

I thought I was purchasing a book, when it was actually a 'study' of the actual book.  I don't want the 'study.'  How do i return/cancel my purchase?

All purchases are considered final, but you can try contacting iTunes support and see if they will refund or credit you : http://www.apple.com/support/itunes/contact/ - click on Contact iTunes Store Support on the right-hand side of the page, then Purchases, Billing & Redemption

  • Bumper and Dock don't mix

Warning, the dock and bumpers for the iPhone 4 don't work together which is a real pity.
I bought both and no have to decide do I use the dock or the bumper.
The bumper is not going to last being removed and replaced every few days.

  • Graphite and Leopard don't mix?

I live out in dialup land (no affordable broadband providers in much of my service area).
I have a client who has an old Graphite base station that was working with her machine previously, but wanted me to change the phone number it called. Her machine could see and use the base station, but the Airport Admin Utility on her machine wouldn't even admit its existence.
I had the "Airport Utility for Graphite or Snow" on mine, which I used to reconfigure the base station. (The interface was maddening -- I could not see how it was already configured, all I could do was reconfigure the entire thing from scratch every time.) When I got done, the base station was working fine, but she could not log onto it using the correct password.
I discovered that I couldn't log onto it either, unless I used "Airport Utility for Graphite or Snow" which processed the passwords fine and had the side-effect of connecting my Airport card to it as if it were going through some kind of back door. But if I shut off my Airport Card then turned it back on, it would not allow me access any more. I tried both "WEP" and "WEP 40 ASCII" with no joy.
I didn't load any new firmware into the base station, at least as far as I know. What is going on?

    Thank you.
Correction to my original post: the utility I had on hand was "AirPort SETUP Assistant for Graphite or Snow," which I assume explains why it would write but not read the AirPort configuration. I have since collected both the "AirPort Admin Utility" (4.2) and the "AirPort Admin Utility for Graphite and Snow," which I did not have with me during that service call, and feel pretty confident that one or the other of these will address her problem tomorrow. I will also remove the preferences as you suggest.
If all else fails, I will simply disable her network password, as she lives pretty much out in the back end of squat, and I doubt there is anyone in a position to poach off her dial-up connection.
My client reports that she is able to get on the network by using Network Diagnostics every time she wants to connect. I have seen this symptom reported by others in these discussions. I also noticed that the AirPort selection software kept insisting that base station was "not a preferred network" even though it appears in the table of preferred networks (I did check carefully for subtle typos). Since only tools that pick up the SSID by themselves tend to work (as opposed to typing in the SSID), one thing I intend to check is that there is no hidden space at the end of the network SSID that may be causing such symptoms.

  • I lost one of my eartips for my in-ear headphones. Apple won't help me and i don't know where else to go

I just lost one of my eartips for my in earheadphones. Apple doesnt sell them on their site and also no other store in my country sells them. I called to the supportnumber but they told me that i 'll cost me 25 euros. 25 euros for a set of three rubber eartips from which i only need one?! (size s). Also i need to pay with a credit card, which i haven't got. So basically there is no way for me to get the replacement tips. Is there anything else i can do? Any number i can cal to complain about it? Because i feel like i''m gettng screwed. And no i dont want ear tips from a different brand. Thanks.

I wandered streets of Sydney including Apple store to be told these are not available however, I have since successfully purchased from
    http://www.dealsishop.com
who provide the silcone plugs in all 3 sizes promptly and quite affordably. They seem to stay on better than the original Apple [product that comes with the headsets. Delivery was quick and an easy way to shop, recommneded fully, now placing another order for friends and family!

  • Pages and iTunes don't mix

All of my Macs (2) are freezing when I have Pages 2 and iTunes open. I can run all day long w/o iTunes and Pages behaves, but when it is on, Pages is off. Anyone else having these issues?
    G4 imac   Mac OS X (10.4.7)   Pages

    Hello ballesco,
128 mb is not enough to have running the system, Pages, iTunes and perhaps Dashboard apps at the same time. By the way, Dashboard can be a real RAM and performance eater, especially if you are using a lot of the apps.
I have disabled the entire Dashboard app for better work performance. If you want do disable Dashboard, too, follow this link: http://www.macworld.com/weblogs/macosxhints/2005/08/disabledashboard/index.php. After that you can enable Dashboard whenever you want.
But you should install more RAM if you want to work with large documents or with several apps at the same time. 512 mb is a must have. How much you need depends on what you want to do with your Mac. The more graphic intense and the greater file sizes, the more RAM you will need.

  • Outlines in Word Processor, numbers and bullets don't mix?

I'm writing a meeting adenga in an outline form. I want the main topics to be numbered, sub-topics to be bulleted, and sub-subtopics to have diamond bullets.
For some reason, the following (as an example) happens. I've created a list of 7 main topics. I add subtopics to topic # 5, which are by default also numbered instead of bulleted. As soon as I change the label style on these subtopics to bullets, topic # 6 is re-labeled # 1, topic # 7 becomes # 2, etc.
I need to make my sub-topics bulleted without affecting the numbering of the main topics. What's happening?

When you add a label (eg. Number) to a paragraph, you are setting a Style for that paragraph. The Style is inherited by subseqent paragraphs until a new style is set.
When you change the label, you are resetting the Style of the selected paragraph(s). This change breaks the chain of 'subsequent paragraphs', and the count is reset.
Rather than a Paragraph style (such as Number or Bullet), you could use one of the three Outline styles (Harvard, Diamond, or Legal) which do allow marking subtopics without affecting the numbering of the main topic list. Unfortunately, none of the three will give the topic marking pattern you want.
You can get (almost) what you want by not creating new 'paragraphs', and by manually inserting the bullets and diamonds.
AppleWorks considers every return character to mark the end of a paragraph, and any character following a return (other than another return, and probably a small set of other characters) to be the first character of a new paragraph.
To start a new line without starting a new 'paragraph', use a line feed (soft return), made by pressing shift-return.
Follow the shift-return with a tab to indent the subtopic, then option-8 for the bullet.
For the second level of subtopics, use shift-return, tab, tab, shift-option-V.

    Barry
