Help!! iBOOK makes whirring and flickering noises and wont boot up

I had noticed that my iBOOK G4 had been getting louder recently, making an increasingly aggressive whirring noise. Then one day it went crazy, it sounded like it was 'thinking' very hard and it froze and wouldn't even shut down. I got it to shut down eventually but now it wont start up. It rarely gets beyond the apple logo and just sits there making very loud whirring noises and it sounds like the hard drive is continually 'thinking'. It did manage to boot up fully once but soon froze again, the whirring noise getting even louder.
Is this a hard drive failure? Is there any hope for it to come back on long enough to recover some files or will I just have to give up and replace it?

Hey Sarah and welcome to Apple Discussions,
Well first try this site:

That noise you hear sounds like the fan.

Before deciding that you can't replace the drive yourself, visit the following site and find the step by step instructions for replacing the drive yourself:
    http://www.ifixit.com/
If you see the instructions and feel that you can replace the drive yourself, you will save money that way. I'm not that familiar with modern iMacs, but I know it was very easy to replace the drive in my old iMac. It may not be as hard to do as you think. If you want extra help, you can post questions on the iMac forum.
If you still don't feel like it is something you can do yourself, try looking for an AASP (Apple Authorized Service Provider) in your area and see what it might cost to have the AASP do the replacement. Often an AASP can do a repair for less money than Apple, and they will usually be willing to install a drive that you have obtained elsewhere for a reasonable price. From what I have read on these forums, many people have used AASP's to install bigger and faster drives on their machines.
Definitely contact Western Digital about your drive. Usually WD drives come with a 3 year warranty, and if the drive fails before then, WD will replace the drive. KT has mentioned that the drive apparently is not under warranty, but might qualify for some sort of an upgrade. Before shopping elsewhere, check to see if this upgrade might entitle you to a very good deal on a replacement drive or something of that nature.
    Good luck!

My iPhone4 version 5.1.1 is stuck at the reboot(the spinning circle) screen and wont boot up, any suggestions people?

Try holding both home and off buttons for a few seconds until the apple logo appears on screen. See if that solves the issue. Honestly, there may be a myriad of reasons why your phone may be stuck at boot stage. Care to share what you did before it occured? That would help us give you better troubleshooting.

  • I just installed new 8gb ram in my MBP 2010 and it beeps 3 times and wont boot.

I bought 8gb DDR3 1066 mhz to install on my MBP 2010 and it beeps three times during boot and wont boot. I looked at other threads and it seems like no one has found an answer. It looks brand new with no obious problems.

Macs can be very fussy about RAM... It is Important to get the Correct and Matching RAM

  • My Mac Pro flashes the question mark and wont boot from hard drive, flash, or Cd... Please help!

My Computer froze so I shut it down... When I tryed to boot up again it wouldn't power up.  After a few tweeks I got it to power up but now it wont boot from the hard drive, flash drive or a cd.  It want to start, then, after a few seconds it stops.  Not sher what to do.  Can anyone help?

    Have you tried Safe Boot?
You also might reset PRAM and reset SMC.
Have you tried booting with the Recovery System? See its possibilities here.
From there you can make repairs to your primary startup partition.
Do you have a backup? If not, do you have an external drive large enough to back up your primary drive? It would be good to have one in case your drive needs repair or replacement.

  • HP DV4-1155SE Black Screen and Wont Boot. Please Help!

Hello all I am working on an Hp DV4-1155SE. I have tested the memory modules, the hard drive and everything else that I can take out of the computer easily. Everything works but!, The laptop will not boot into the bios or anything else. Black screen, wont boot and i have the bios file that HP supplies on the support page of the site. I have looked at the instructions that a few people have posted about re flashing the bios and that does not seem to help me at all with this AMD processor. If anyone can please offer any help at all this would be greatly appreciated.
    Thank you!

I will search on int 19h....thanks.
My problem started before the bios-screen.
This is what I tried this evening:
    - Disconnected all non-essential devices...no effect.
    - Cleared the CMOS...system booted to OS!    Screens still garbled!
    - Put in an older graphics-card...No artifacts!
    - Put my MSI NX6600GT (AGP) back in...screen grabled while booting. Once in OS everything
looks fine at first. Later I noticed some odd random pixels. Playing movies is working fine.
Playing 3D games results in all kinds of strange looking artifacts.
    - Installed the latest NVidia- drivers...no effect.
Is my problem still MOBO related or Graphics Adapter?
    Any further advice?
    Thanks!

  • MacBook Pro hard disk noise, froze and wont boot

I was using my MacBook Pro and it froze at the same time I could hear the hard drive cracking. The following are guesses because of the sounds I was hearing: While the hard disk made cracking noises, it would stop spining. Then it started to spin again and another crack would stop the spining.
I held down the power button to shut down and now it wont boot. I can hear the same type of noises I described before.
    Thanks for the help

Based on your comments, your HDD is dead.  Get a new one, larger and faster if can afford it and swap in your MBP.  You will have to reinstall your OS and I hope you have a back up of your data.

  • Help with update issues and resulting boot problems

Ok so I have arch installed and can get through all the updating except for glibc..I know there are countless post on the subject and I have spent the past two days reading through them. I have also broken my system and have done about 15 re-installs trying to get through this. Also, after I update (excluding glibc) and re-boot I get the root device cannot be found error and am dropped to a shell.
What I am asking is, can someone PLEASE give me a straight forward answer on how to fix this stuff...I'm tired of reading and re-installing.
I'd appreciate any help you can give..

If you're using the most recent iso, the /lib to /usr/lib move has already been taken care of, so none of those countless bbs threads (or the infinitely superior official advice from the devs) apply any more. Please post the exact commands you are using and the exact error messages you are seeing.

  • IBook makes a nasty screaming noise and wont boot!

What is the verdict, it sounds like the cooling fan bearing is shot and the machine makes an awful noise on startup but it does not seem to be able to read from disk - so maybe it is not the fan after all!?

    Hi CDJA,
This can be caused by the heatsink Fan.
more than likely, the heatsink fan's axis has been damaged or misaligned.
You can take this to a service center near you and see if you can get this fixed under warranty.
Please let us know if this solves your issue

  • Help with ibook G4, Freezing and wont turn on :-(

Can anyone help a fellow MacLady?
I have an ibook G4, her her a year with no problems,
2 days ago cursor froze, and I turned off and restarted and am left with a blank screen.
Every now and then it starts up, all my documents are there, connects to to wireless ok, and last for anything from 5mins to 1hr. Then freezes again.
Took it to a local PC man who looked and said he doenst really know apples but guessed it was Hard Drive.
Have no lost NO information from the PC, its all backed up now thankfully as I do occassionaly get access to it, though all my 876 entourage emails have strangely dissapeard. Aghhhhhhhhhhhhhh
Have an appointment with a "Genius" in Bluewater on Wednesday (earliest they can see me), but just wondered if anyone knew what the problem might be and how much I am maybe looking at for a repair? As the PC man told me to buy a new one as this will cost hundreds.
I work from home so not been able to print or do hardly anything so am running out of time
Thanks for any help, the PC is here next to me (am on my old Win one, blergh) so if anyone can help or give advice I would really appreciate it,
Thanks for any help in advance.

Hi LadyMacB and welcome to Apple Discussions.
First of all see if you can start up inSafe Mode.
Safe Boot takes longer than normal startup.
What is Safe Boot, Safe Mode.
If you are able to start up in Safe Mode and reboot into normal mode this may, in itself, be enough. If not restart in Safe Mode, if you are able, & put your OS X install disk in and restart holding the C key until you see the spinning gear wheel. When you get to the Language screen select your language and select 'Next'.
At the top of the screen towards the left in the menu bar select Utilities>Disk Utility. Select the Drive name at the very top, then look at the report at the bottom of the window. Amongst everything else you will, hopefully, see S.M.A.R.T. status 'Verified'.
If it says 'Failing' then your PC bloke is spot on. Be grateful that you were able to get everything backed up. Otherwise proceed…
Select your OS volume 2nd down in the left hand box, then click the 'Repair Disk' button. Leave Disk Repair to run, If it reports that repairs were made select 'Repair Disk' again until you get the message that the Volume appears to be OK. If DU reports at any time that it could not repair then third party utilities may be necessary or, irrespective of the S.M.A.R.T. status report, your HD may be shot. Try the above for starters and report back.
    Best of luck,
    Adrian

  • I downloaded emoticons and now IncrediMail has hijacked mozilla, my start page, firefox and hotmail can you please help no virus found and wont delete off add/remove programs

I downloaded emoticons and now IncrediMail has hijacked my browser choices, my toolbars with mozilla, my start page and functions in hotmail. I tried virus scans = nothing. I tried to remove = wont go away. Please help

No virus, but that "emoticons" thing dumped a load of Malware on your PC.
Install, update, and run these programs in this order.
