Help ibook to powerbook

hi-
i want to connect my ibook g4 to my powerbook g3 (lombard, mac os 9.1, 320 MB, 6 BG) via ethernet cord. i want to get some files off of my powerbook. is there any way i can do that? also, i want to put mac os 10.4 on my powerbook, i have the cds but my powerbook doesn't have a dvd drive, just a cd-rom. what otherway can i put tiger on my powerbook? can i do it by the ethernet cord? please go through this step by step, and i'll try not to get lost
thanks, Jordan

You actually can transfer file using ethernet and a regular cable (no loopback), if you setup private IP address for each machine (say, 192.168.10.1 for Box A and 192.168.10.2 for Box B)
I use it all of the time to move files between machines when I don't have a LAN around
I use SSH, I'm not sure about that Lombard, but SSH (client & server) it is standard on any recern Os X release, get a client for the Lombard, and setup on the Sharing option of the System Preferences, choose 'Services' and enable 'Remote Login'.
There are graphical clients, but I'm not sure if there is one available for the Lombard.

  • Anyone editing FCP on a 12" iBook or Powerbook?

I'm looking at writing an article about "micro" HD production on the road - HD in a backpack, that sort of thing. Now, when I say production, I'm not talking very high end. I know the hardware isn't there yet! Think news, documentary or magazine show packages.
Anyway, I'm thinking about including a 12" Apple laptop in the mix and I was wondering if anyone has experience using either the iBook or Powerbook for HDV or MPEG4 editing. Is the small unit up to the job - internal drive speed sufficient, single Firewire port enough, etc.?
Also, any micro equipment you've been impressed with recently would help (mics, lights, anything at all)? Whatever it is, it has to be tiny.
    Thanks

OK, I understand all that but I don't think it applies here. I'd probably be editing off the Powerbook's internal drive. I wouldn't be using the camera (it records video to an SD card) as a drive except in the initial import of files.
As far as RAM and "horsepower," while on the road I've been editing HDV pretty successfully on my 17" laptop and it's a 1G with only 512M of RAM.

I guess, ultimately, the point is not whether this would be an ideal production workflow but, could it be done in a pinch, like on a mountaintop or a sailboat.

  • Transfer Netscape email from iBook to PowerBook

I am switching from using Netscape for email on a iBook G4 to a PowerBook G4. The iBook has Netscape 7.2 with bookmarks and emails. I can’t get Netscape on the PowerBook to recognize the iBook email files that I copied over. What I did was to copy over (via Firewire) the Mozilla folder in “computer”/”hard drive”/users/”name”/Library from iBook to PowerBook.
When I start Netscape on the PowerBook Netscape acts as if a new user profile is being set up and won’t find the user profile that was copied with the Mozilla folder. There must be another file that needs to be copied that I am missing. What is it?

Your profile is contained at Documents->Mozilla->Profiles. Here's an article on moving Netscape mail that may help, and it includes macs: http://www.bu.edu/pcsc/email/manage/newprogram.html#utility

The most common Quicktime 7.1 problem I've seen is someone's audio settings get messed up by a certain software. Go to the Audio Midi Setup application in Applications -> Utilities and see if your audio output has set for 96 Hz. If you drop it to 44.1 Hz, the audio issues some may have with Quicktime 7.1 would be fixed. If you are having other Quicktime issues, you may want to post to the Quicktime board your question by clicking on Post a New Topic at the beginning of:
    http://discussions.apple.com/forum.jspa?forumID=932
rather than posting at the end of someone else's thread. That way you'll get a wider audience, and potentially someone who knows the answer.

  • IBook use Powerbook charger?

My iBook charger has begun to work intermittently. I had a Powerbook G4 titanium before this iBook and the same time happened to it. Eventually, it began to spark, and I had to replace it.
My question is, can I use the Powerbook charger on my iBook? I thought I read somewhere not to do that, but it seems that since the replacement chargers Apple sells is for both the Powerbook and iBook that I should be able to do this. I just wanted to ask before I tried it.
    Thanks!
    Sharon

    Hi Sharon,
Yes, you can use it. iBooks and PowerBooks use the same 65w adapter.

  • Updated iBook on PowerBook CD and now it can't find Finder. PLEASE HELP!

Today I updated my iBook G3 from OS X 10.2.8 to OS X 10.3.x using a disk that I had found for my PowerBook G4. My PowerBook crashed a couple of years ago and has been sitting on my desk as a paper weight, so i figured that the disk would update the iBook with no problem. I turned on the iBook and logged in and Finder would not run I tried to relaunch Finder, I tried booting in safe mode and nothing has worked. I don't want to reinstall 10.2 but if I absolutely have to I will. Thanks for any help you can provide!

As you have found, software CDs that came with one Mac usually won't work with another model.
Did you back up your hard drive with a clone before attempting the upgrade? If so, you can easily revert to your previous system.

  • HELP!! powerbook stuck on grey screen, not able to boot safe or single user

hey, i need some help, ive searched the forums the best i could, im experianced at fixing pc's but this has been my first mac in awhile, a friend of mine brought his 12" powerbook g4 to me, he says whenever he turns is on its stays stuck on the first screen where you see a grey apple and it shows a spinning wheel loading, he said hes even left it on overnight and it still stays there, he said he might have gotten a virus, cause he said he was searching **** last time it worked =P (hey i dont judge, every man has to find someway to reveive the "pressure")
so anyway, i dont have alot of his specs, not even the exact o/s # i just know he told me it osx 10.4, so i did some research and found some ways to TRY and fix it, i tried safe mode (shift) and single user mode (cmd+s) and even verbose mode(cmd+v) when booting up the powerbook, but alas, none have worked, safe mode doesnt do anything, just the same grey screen, and single and verbose mode both halts after the cmd screen goes through a few lines.
he doesnt have any software for his powerbook, they are all at home, which is about 900 kms away (or 559.26 miles to the non-metric ppl out there) so im working with nothing but my brain and the net, which isnt much, does anybody have any suggestions, maybe some third party software that would help, just point me in the right direction, or better yet, explain it to me like i was an infant, im not used to macs, but they intrigue. at least for now, i dont want to be put off just from this one little incident.
thanks to anyone who offers help, its my first time EVER asking for it in any forum.

    Welcome to Apple Discussions.
There's a couple of things I can think of that may be the problem. Based upon what you have described, the first is a hard drive failure.
A couple of ways to check for this is to use the PowerBook's original installer disc (which you don't currently have access to), or perhaps a Mac OS X Tiger installation disc, to restart from and then use Disk Utility to perform a Repair Disk. Restarting from CD or DVD is performed by pressing the 'C' key during startup with the disc in the PB.
Another way to check is to see if the drive can be accessed via FireWire Target Disk Mode.
A second possibility is that there may be a directory corruption on the drive. If so, then DiskWarrior is the best option.
Another possibility is to take the PB in to an Apple Store or Apple Authorised Service Provider for them to diagnose.

  • HELP ibook g3 OSX 10.2.8 no longer detects airport express wireless network

my ibook G3 OSX 10.2.8, airport admin utility software 3.1.1 no longer can detect the airport express wireless network (powerbook G4, OSX 10.4.11, airport admin utility 4.2; airport express, WEP protected, to DSL modem). i just installed an ipod driver update on the ibook, and wireless networking went down on restart. any help greatly appreciated!

    you name it : com.apple.airport.adminutility.plist
delete it and do as advised.
This isn't harmful, because it is only a preference list, so it will be created brandnew as soon as you re-setup the Airport stuff.
Mac OS X ( especially Jaguar ) has a tendency to corrupt some plists out of the blue, it is more or less harmless and can be fixed with recreating them plus permissions-repair.
Hint : repair permissions more than one time, it ALWAYS finds something to fix in Jaguar.
You cannot destroy something with these actions, because it is Unix maintance so usual routines.
A tool like cocktail or Onyx ( google them, onyx is freeware ) can help you run such ( and more ) routines on a scheduled base.
Always remember that OS X is no longer "the Mac OS", it is Unix with a nice Desktop, the critical things run hidden in the background, so it has to be treated like any Unix/Linux sort of OS, even if from the outside everything looks nice and kosher..

  • Which 12in laptop? ibook or powerbook

I've had an iPod for a while now and I want to make a switch for my computer as well. I've been doing research for a couple weeks and have decided to get a 12in model. At first I was going to get a 14in ibook until I found out that the resolution is the same as the 12in. Then I was going to get a 12in ibook until I found out you can't get a superdrive upgrade. I was set on a 12in powerbook but then read a review that suggested getting an ibook and upgrading the HD and RAM. So, if I was willing to stick with a 12in ibook (combo drive), and add ram and a larger hard drive would this still be comparable to the 12in powerbook. I noticed less VRam on the ibook but is this going to be signifigant enough to pay the extra few hundred for the powerbook? I know this might be left to my own personal usage but I'm very interested hearing some other opinions. Thanks, Clay

This is a real difficult question to answer without really knowing what exactly you're looking to get out of your new laptop. If you're going to be doing some graphics-intensive work, video work and creating DVD's, a Powerbook is definetly the way to go, with the faster processor and all. If you are not looking for all of those, though, an iBook may be the way to proceed. I actually just made the decision about three weeks ago to purchase a 12' iBook over the 12' Powerbook. I chose the iBook over the Powerbook, first off because I'm a poor college student, and the iBook has the power to do everything I really need it to do, and a little more. My purposes for having a laptop are to write papers, use iTunes, surf the internet, and use Adobe from time to time, so as you can see, I'm not really using graphics-intensive programs, which is why I chose to go the iBook route.
I did read all of the posts on this site also, and after searching topics such as iBook vs. Powerbook, for example, I was able to read other people's experiences with choosing between the two laptops, and thus, was able to make a decision, partly based on what I read online.
Now, you may say to yourself...sure, if you pay $200, you can get a Powerbook with a faster processor and whatnot, but $200.00 is relative to the person purchasing the product. I decided that $200-300 was a little too steep for me, considering I was also planning to purchase a case for my computer and Microsoft Office also, but for others, again, $200 may be really not that much, considering the improved performance in the Powerbook.
So if I were either one of you, I would reassess your needs out of a laptop. I mean, I chose the iBook, but honestly, either way you go, you will be purchasing a Mac, and that is a start to a larger light at the end of the tunnel.
That's my two cents, hopefully that kind of helped your situation.

  • Moving "profile" and bookmarks from ibook to powerbook?

I just bought a 15 powerbook after loving my ibook for the last two years. My question is how can I move my files from my ibook to the powerbook so I can keep my bookmarks AND my log-in passwords for website log-ins?
Of course I'd like to bring my email with me but I think I will import those from the application entourage (don't throw anything at me. I've tried Mail but really think its lacking in features that I enjoy in Entourage including the built in calendar that I've used for several years now). I can simply import using shared files once I get my powerbook online and allow file sharing on my ibook.
But what files/folders do I need to drag into the powerbook to make sure my bookmarks and log-ins/passwords are imported too. Is there a trick or a source I can read before I get started?
    thanks for your help!

The Migration Manager is the best way to transfer all of your applications, documents and settings from the iBook to the PowerBook, but if only want to transfer specific files, then you will have to move them from the iBook to the PowerBook manually. Your passwords are stored in the keychain file on the iBook in ~/Library/Keychains. You will need to make a copy of that file and add it to the list of keychains on your PowerBook as described in Mac Help:
Adding an existing keychain file to your keychain list
If you have a keychain file from another computer, you can add the keychain to your keychain list.
Open Keychain Access, located in /Applications/Utilities.
    Select Edit menu >Keychain List.
Click the Add button, then locate the keychain file and click Open
You can transfer your Safari bookmarks manually, as well, by copying the Bookmarks.plist file in the ~/Library/Safari folder on the iBook and placing the copy in the same location on your PowerBook.
    Good luck.

  • Please Help! My Powerbook is rewriting my programs!

    Hello,
I wanted to first say thank you to those of you who answer questions on this forum, and keep this great resource running!
My question involves a problem I've previously had the Genius Bar at my local Apple store look at a few times, although this time it happend it has been less severe so far.
    Here's the story....
About 3 months ago my computer had a problem similar to this guy's problem:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=413459
Essentially the dock and the dock icons reset to factory settings, along with all the programs within the dock. I lost my iTunes library, my iCal information, my iPhoto library, bookmarks in Safari and some other things.
I first thought the worst had happened and wiped my hard drive clean, did a clean install and reinstalled all my information off of my backups. I also consulted the Genius Bar after reinstalling everything and they figured this fixed everything too. It did fix the problem for a little while, until disaster struck again, with the same problem happening again.
This time I didn't wipe anything or reinstall anything, I took it straight to the Genius Bar. They decided it was the Hard Drive and replaced it. It's been about a month since they replaced the Hard Drive and things had been going well until I bought a RAM upgrade. I followed Apple's instructions perfectly to upgrade the RAM, replacing the factory 512k with 2 GB. Everything appeared fine once I started the machine up. The "About this Computer" showed, and still shows that I have the 2GB installed. Within the same start-up I opened iTunes and an error message popped up telling me my library was corrupted and that it was labeling it as damaged.
I quickly restarted, and bam! factory dock settings.. I've got the computer running now, because i'm afraid what will happen after further restarts. If I'll lose more and more. I did check all of my programs, and with the exception of iCal, iTunes, and iPhoto. Everything is working fine. I lost the dock icons, but all my information seems to still be there.
Does anyone know how to fix this, or better yet what keeps causing this problem? I'm very interested to find out if others have the same problem.
Any help or insight into this problem would be very appreciated.
    Thank you in advance...
    Bryan
    Powerbook G4 Titanium 1.5   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

    Haven't trashed anything
You don't mention whether you might have renamed something (or moved a file/folder needed by the OS). Renaming/moving some files/folders will result in exactly the behavior you've described, but if you haven't done so, you'll have to look elsewhere.
Given that you've replaced the HD, reinstalled the OS from the install discs (not from a backup) and still have the issue, it would seem to narrow down the causes to the following:
-one of your apps is renaming/moving OS files (this is not unheard of).
-the install disc is installing a corrupt OS (not unheard of either, but if the issue started occurring with the original OS that was on the PB when it was new, and the same issue is occurring after reinstalling the OS from your install disc, these are most likely different sources for the OS and would seem to rule out a faulty installation disc).
    -faulty RAM.
    -faulty logic board.

  • Need help setting up Powerbook G4 to Belkin Wireless G Router 802.11g

Cannot get the laptop to go online, says "the specified server could not be found. Called my internet provider, Belkin and no one can get it online. Can anyone give me the steps to setting up the laptop maybe the settings are not right? I bought an airport card thru ebay and did install the card in the laptop. My signal level is full so looks like the card is working. It does say that the base station id is not available not sure if this would be the problem? Again any suggestions would be helpful, I have had a friend here and look at it also and he could not get it to work. I am using this also with my PC but that is hook directly into the router. Just want to get the laptop so I can surf the web. Thanks!
    Powerbook G4   Mac OS X (10.1.x)

When I open the internet connect there is an box for airport to turn it on and off and in the box under signal level there is a blue bar there is no black or grey bars. And I am not sure abt the security on the router how can I find that out. Sorry if I act stupid with this but I am learning as I go. Thanks!!

  • IBook and Powerbook Poster

I just bought this Fabric Poster from apple. It has a picture of the iBook G4 and Powerbook G4 and in the middle it says "Too bad you only have one Lap"
Is this a geniune product, on the back it has a copyright date of 1996.
Where do you think this was used? When? Is it rare?
Its pretty big too, probably 2 feet wide and 4 feet tall?

  • Need Help with Titanium Powerbook board replacement

    Hi,
I have couple questions about replacing my motherboard for my Titanium 15" Powerbook. It's a 400Mhz w/ 256MB Ram and 10GB hard drive. Would it be possible to upgrade with a different board? Would it fit? Are there any sites that offer great prices for upgrades for this? Any information would be great. It is in great condition and I would like to make use of it. Thank you for your time.

Hi, Thank you both for the reply. I will check out the web site. I noticed in your equipment that you have a TiBook as well. How did you get it up to 1GHz? did you change the processor on that 500Mhz board? Let me know. Thanks. Appreciate your help.
