Help! iBook won't boot up after latest security upgrade....................

I have an iBook G4 12 inch screen mac. I have recently updated with the latest Apple security update (15/9/08)Since installing the update my iBook has failed to boot up successfully. There is no start-up chime and the boot stops at the grey screen with the Apple logo and goes no further. I have tried safe mode, won't go there, have tried various other tips, holding down various keys on start-up, all with no joy! Does anyone have the same problem and does anyone have any answers?! Thanks in advance!
Jim

Thanks, Cornelius. I am just afraid now, is it safe or should I forget about reinstalling the most recent update? It is moot right now though anyway, because I still can't get my computer to fully boot up. At least attempting to book with the OS 10.5 disc in the drive it does not power down, but it is getting stuck for a long time (over 30 minutes) on the gray startup screen with the apple and the DVD drive repeatedly spins and stops, then finally just seems to stop spinning and gives up.

  • Powerbook G4 (OS X 10.4.11) won't boot up after latest security update

My G4 failed to reboot when restarted after latest security updtate.
The gray screen with apple logo and rotating gear stays on forever.
I tried booting in safe mode but same thing occurred.
I was able to boot in single user mode and run fsck -yf and it ran fine.
Then when I tried to boot again, same thing all over again.
I am guessing there must be some problems with new updates in the start-up folder or something. But I am not sure how to get rid of the files related to the new updates. Your help would be really appreciated. Oh, I was also able to run disk utilities application when I inserted Mac OS X installation dvd and booted from it. Then when I try to boot from HD, the same thing all over again...

I just spent a good 3 hrs or so trying to figure out why my imac running os x 10.4.11 wasn't rebooting after I downloaded the latest security update 2009-001. I finally got it running again after browsing the many helpful comments from past rebooting issues. Here are the steps:
    1. On another computer, you'll have to download the security update that you believe froze your mac. In my case it was the 2009-001 update.
    2. Save this file to a usb key, or in my case, to my LACIE backup drive.
    3. Once downloaded, connect the USB key or backup drive to your mac.
    4. Insert your install disc that came with your mac. (I installed disc 1)
    5. Power down your mac. ( I did so by pressing and holding the power button on the back)
    6. Press and hold the 'C' key on your keyboard as you restart your mac.
    7. Let go of 'C' as the apple logo and spinning wheel come on. The start-up disc should start to run.
    8. Choose your language.
    9. At the top of your desktop you'll see 'Terminal'. Start it.
    10. at the prompt, type "mount" to see a list of your volumes (in my case, the volume was LACIE).
    11. type "find /Volumes/nameofyourUSB/*.dmg" Ex. "find /Volumes/LACIE/*.dmg" (This step will give the path of your update).
    12. type "hdiutil attach /Volumes/nameofyourUSB/pathoftheupdate/SecUpd2009-001Intel.dmg" (Note the space after hdiutil AND attach)
    13. type "/Volumes/Macintosh\ HD/usr/sbin/installer -pkg /Volumes/Security\ Update\ 2009-001/SecUpd2009-001Intel.pkg -target /Volumes/Macintosh\ HD" (Note the spaces again. Took me a few tries before I finally got it. If you get it right, you'll notice your hard-drive start to be active. Let it do it's thing before you exit Terminal.
    14. Exit Terminal.
    15. Go to 'Utilities' at the top of the desktop, select 'Startup Disk', and choose your OS (in my case, OS X 10.4.11).
    Good luck!

  • IBook won't boot up after a rest..

I hava the most weird problem with my iBook..
As I have it running, it works just fine.
I can boot it up, install software and do all sorts of things with it but when I turn it off and let it stay like that for like couple of hours, it won't boot up no more.
With the OS disk I can revive it, just now it took 5 tries, but it started and now as I shut it down and turn it on again there is no problem. But yet again, if I let it stand there for a hour or two, we are back in with the same problem, it won't finf the boot disk and needs to be revived with the OS intallation disk.
I reinstalled the whole (clean install) system today, had everything set up and installed all my software and such and there was no problem during the whole day, but now I had it turned off for few hours, it's just the same..
    What might be the problem??

Now there is a new HD and it works better than this iBook has ever done.
That's great! Glad that resolved your issue.
So, problem solved, not in a conventional way but solved.
Well, actually, pretty conventional. The average life of an internal HDD in a laptop is approximately 3 to 5 years, and even if they survive beyond that they can fail suddenly or else continue with progressively degraded performance until they expire. The new HDDs have larger capacities and faster rotational speeds, both of which significantly boost performance.
    Good luck.

  • IMac won't boot up after latest update. Any suggestions?

I just updated my software (the latest from apple), then my iMac won't boot again.

There you go. Your HDD is failing hence its not booting. You need reformat the HDD
To reformat, same steps: Boot to the install disc > get past the language selection > You will see Welcome to Blah Blah Blah > just hit continue > There should be something there called erase and install
    BUT
    1. if you are absolutely sure that Time machine has BACKED-UP all of your files then proceed above
    2. If not, if you have another mac: connect it via firewire then google Target Disk mode. Basically you want to copy all your files from the damaged machine to the new mac to serve as a backup
    3. if yo dont have another mac: get an external HDD, install Mac os X on it, boot to it then back up your files
    to do this
    a) Plug external HDD
    b) Boot to the CD restart and hold C
    c) Get past language selection and keep hitting continue
    d) when it asks you where you want to install Mac os X > select the external HDD
    e) once its installed. Restart the computer and hold "Option" key. You should now see your external HDD as one of the boot drives. Select that and you'll boot into it
    f) once inside the external HDD OS, you will see the internal HDD(damaged drive)browse/navigate through it and start getting your important files

  • Can't Restart After Latest Security Upgrade

I was running Software Update on the latest Security Update, but for some reason the Update failed to download and install(yellow triangle with an excalmation point instead of the usual green circle with a check mark). The Screen Message said to restart (as I think there was also an iTunes and QuickTime update that downloaded fine).
I intitiated the restart - but it went into the blue-screen mode after the tone.
I was able to use my restart using the install disk and ran Verify and First Aid, but it found no problems.
I tried to restart- still nothing.
    Any ideas?
I saw a posting in the iMac discussions for a similar problem after the Security Update as well. I have three Macs (all running 10.4.11) and only this one won't restart. It's also the newest Mac.
My son's gonna kill me if I don't get this thing up and running soon!

    Hi.
The first thing I would do is Uninstall that Adobe ShockWave. There are plenty alternatives, that work infinitely better with Mac. If you really need it, you can Reinstall it later. NOW! You must follow the prompts, precisely, when doing maintenance. Verifying the Disk, is a different task, so, I'll write it down for you, it may be easier to follow.
Boot from Install Disk, holding down the C Key, until you see the Apple Logo.
Select your Language, and click the little arrow at the bottom.
From the Menu Bar (up top) Select Utilities. From the Drop Down, Select Disk Utility.
Select your HD from the list on the left side (usually the First one)
Click the First Aid tab, and at the bottom of the window, Select _Repair Disk_. Reboot.
After Reboot, Select Applications>Utilities>Disk Utility Select the HD( same one) Click First Aid, and Repair _Disk Permissions._

  • IMac won't boot up after latest update

    Hi
I'm a newbie to this forum but any help would be greatly appreciated please
We've had our iMac for 2yrs now no issues but when I went to do the latest update today it's gone a bit weird!
I did the install and relaunch like I always do but when rebooting it got stuck on the white start up page with the apple logo and a circular timer
Ive rebooted it several times and performed a PRAM and SMC reset but still same issue. The fan started to run fast but the resets seem to have solved that?
Any ideas what's wrong and how to fix it please?
    Thanks in advance

The reason Allan was asking what update is this will affect how it's handled. However without knowing I believe the most wise thing to do it take the machine into an Apple Store or AASP where they can help you. One of the most recent updates was a EFI update for 2011 iMacs. If your iMac is a 2011 machine (released after May 2011) and that is the update in question then the only recourse is taking it in as mentioned.
There are a couple of things you can try though, first is restart using the Install Disk or if you are on Lion restart and when you hear the startup tone hold down the Option Key. Then choose Disk Utilities and run Repair Disk Permissions, do this 2x. Then exit DU and try to restart normally. If that doesn't work then try rebooting in Safe Mode, this will clear some caches. It's possible one or more has become corrupt. If neither of these work then definetely take it in.
Finally please  please please complete your profile, use Your Stuff in the upper right of this page then click Profile and complete. This is vital to helping you. At this point we know nothing about your system, what version of OS X, which iMac, etc...

  • Won't boot up after attempted security download?

I have a G4 and was attempting to download the most recent security update. I got an error after the download and it went into my trash. I thought I would delete it and try to download again. I emptied my trash and the computer got froze getting the files ready to be deleted. So I restarted. Now, the gray screen comes up and stays up with the black spinning wheel. I have tried to restart with the start up disk (holding the c key down) and it is still gray, but no spinning wheel. I have tried to restart with the option key, same thing. I've tried every variation of holding keys down to no avail. It's now been like this for two days. I'm afraid to turn it off. Is there any way I can get it back to normal without having to bring it in to the store? : ( Thanks for any assistance.

Do you have your keyboard plugged directly into the computer chassis? Sometimes plugging it into the display means the Mac does not see those "snag Keys" at Startup.
Holding the shift key immediately after the startup chime should cause you Mac to check its disk and then come up in "Safe Boot" mode, with few extensions loaded and most stuff set to defaults.

  • IBook G4 won't load after latest security update, repair doesn't work?

Hi I had the same problem as someone else in this forum:
"Last night I saw that my ibook G4 wanted to do a security update. I told it to do it, and the ibook has not started since. It reset itself after downloaded, but it just stays on the booting up screen, never actually booting up so I can use it. After about two hours of trying to boot up, I turned it off, and on again, and it still wont boot.
I really need suggestions as how I can fix it. Thanks

    HI,
Ok... you need to boot from your install disk.
Insert Installer disk and Restart, holding down the "C" key until grey Apple appears.
Go to Installer menu (Panther and earlier) or Utilities menu (Tiger and later) and launch Disk Utility.
Select your HDD (manufacturer ID) in the left panel.
Select First Aid in the Main panel.
(Check S.M.A.R.T Status of HDD at the bottom of right panel. It should say: Verified)
Click Repair Disk on the bottom right.
If DU reports disk does not need repairs quit DU and restart.
If DU reports errors Repair again and again until DU reports disk is repaired.
If you cannot boot from your install disk, try booting in Safe Mode
Resolve startup issues and perform disk maintenance with Disk Utility and fsck
If you have the original hard drive in this iBook, it was probably a 60GB drive? When you can do this, check to see how much available disk space there is.
Right or control click the MacintoshHD icon on your Desktop, then click: Get Info. In the Get Info window, click the discovery triangle so it's facing down. You will see; Capacity and Available Make sure you have 10% available disk space, 15% is better. Not enough available drive space can cause issues like you are experiencing.

I tried restarting it after the repair (there were some things to repair and I tried to repair twice just to make sure it didn't miss anything) but it still won't load. It says its starting the OX system, but when the blue bar reaches the end, it doesn't do anything from there. I also left it on for hours and it did nothing. My mousepad still lets me move around the mouse, the caps lock key still lights up, as the num lock key. I tried safe mode but that won't load either...any other suggestions?

Your iBook needs to go in for repairs.

  • My 2006 iMac running Snow Leopard won't boot even after erasing and re-installing Snow Leopard (via my MacBookPro), either from the HD or DVD drive.  Can't get it to run Hardware Test.  Disk Utility says disk OK - files are there. What can I do?

My 2006 iMac running Snow Leopard won't boot even after erasing and re-installing Snow Leopard.   I erased and re-installed by putting the iMac in Target Disk mode and usin my MacBookPro as the host.  But after numerous attempts I still can't get it to boot either from the HD or DVD drive. I just get the white screen after the wheel stops spinning.  I can't get it to run Hardware Test - just get the white screen.  If I use Disk Utility via my MBP it says the disk appears OK. All the Snow Leopad files appear to have been installed. What can I do?

Perhaps you installed the wrong version OS X onto the iMac, you can't use the disk from another Mac.
    clean the disk.
If it's not working then use this method to create a bootable 10.6 USB from the iMac machine specific 10.6 disk or the 10.6.3 retail disk on your other Mac, use it to boot the iMac with.

Mac OSx won't boot up after update to 10.6.7?

    Hi Mike
This is called a kernel panic, similar to s 'blue screen of death' on Windows. When you say you reinstalled 3 times, do you mean the OS or the Update?
When does this kernel panic appear? You may have a hardware issue if it's happening on boot.

  • Can't activate after latest iPad upgrade. Advises me to go to iTunes but it won't get off the error screen.

Can't activate after latest iPad upgrade. Error message advises me to go to iTunes but it won't get off the error screen.

I am the original owner of an ipad and it woke it yesterday requiring me to activate it using the original apple id used to set it up.
It will not accept my apple id and password.
It does not show up in my icloud under devices.
I have tried hard restart (home + power) and itunes recovery.
I am out of ideas and have not found anything for original owners (as opposed to someone who bought it from someone else).  I did see some posts from last year where a few people had the same problem and took it back to apple and got a refurbished unit given to them since customer service and engineering couldn't fix it.  I was wondering if this was related to the recent ios8 upgrade. Anybody else have ideas or same problem before I hike down to the apple store for mercy?

  • IBook won't boot from CD

I bought this iBook, used, with Tiger on it. A while back, it had Debian Lenny installed onto it. Now I can't reinstall Tiger...
I have tried holding "C" before the gray screen when it boots, and I've tried holding "option". It only shows the disk with the Linux penguin, but not my Tiger install CD. Holding C, it only loops trying to read the CD; it does NOT reboot, it just unsuccessfully continues attempting to read the disk.
I know it not be a problem with my CD, because I can't reinstall Debian or Kubuntu or Ubuntu, even from the disk used in the past. I have tried resetting the PRAM and PMU..
Is there any hope?? I'm done with using Linux.

Yes, the iMac will still boot from the CD. The iBook won't boot from any disk anymore, not even retail Panther. I know that the CD drive still works, because I'm using it right now to listen to music in Debian.. I think something's up with the open firmware, and I should update it but that can only be done through Classic right? There's not even an update for my iBook, I think.
I've tried burning several different linix distros, and they all work with my iMac but not iBook.
And, yes, it is a set of four CDs for Tiger.
