HELP! ID2 to CS3 or CS4

I have a large document that was created in ID2 several years back. When trying to open in either CS3 or 4 it crashes. My printer can open it in ID2, but it too crashes his CS versions.
He has tried doing a simple save and then reopen.
Is there any way to save this out of ID2 so I can open in CS?

InDesign 2.0 does not export to .inx. That was introduced in InDesign 3.0 (CS).
If it is a small document (1 or 2 pages) you may be able to get someone to copy the data from InDesign 2, and paste it into a newer version.
I'd be willing to help with that this weekend if you want. If so, send me an email.

Help with some CS3 to CS4 Migration

Hi all, my company has just upgraded to Photoshop CS4 and some of my artists are asking some UI questions. If anyone has an answer/woraround/information on these points that would be great. I've done some searching on these forms and cant find and info on these points.
1. Right-click menu on document window title bar has gone. (Used to have Image/Canvas resize options, no only accessible through the 'image' menu)
2. CTRL-Double-left-Click on an empty area of photoshop's background used to open the 'new document' dialogue.
3. Dragging a file from explorer to photoshop opens it as a maximised tab, even if you have tabbed images turned off.

Cool, thanks guys, I did extensivly search for these points, it's not that easy to find stuff here if you only visit once every couple of months, some posts have several hundred replies etc and I simply don't have the time to sift through it all, not trying to be rude, just telling it like it is, I do really appreciate the replies. Maybe some links to these posts? I also looked in the FAQ...
My ""artists"" have to churn out several pieces of concept art / textures for games per day plus deal with our own internal technical issues and don't have the time to look up help on how to use an app that they have been using for 10+ years. They should already have all the skills they need and shouldn't have to look up help on anything other than new features, not to work out how to use the program from scrath again. I guess because they use a very limited cross section of Photoshop's features (pretty much painting and thats it) they get annoyed when all these extra features get added that they don't use and at the same time they're workflow gets messed up. Most of the time they just ask "Have they made it like painter yet?".
I'm not at all saying that the new features arn't great, it's justs that such a large number of people and industries use Photoshop its hard to keep everyone happy. I don't intend this as a flame of any sort, just getting it off my chest.

CS3 and CS4 keeps crashing right after opening and loading. Help!!!! Can't even open a doc!!

I have CS3 and CS4 on my MacBook Pro. Since yesterday each application I try opening crashes right when it finishes loading. ID, PS, IL, FL, ect. I need help!!!!!!!!! I can't get a person on the phone or email to assist me. Do I need to download something to make it work. Was there an update? I've been researching for two days now and I can't figure it out. Have design jobs to finish!!

reset each programs preferences.
use google to see how to do that for each problematic program.

How do I edit image viewer slideshow created in CS3, in CS4?

I apologize for posting this twice...once in a previous post and once here. The reason being...the other post was old (2008) and I'm afraid it might get overlooked. So I thought I'd create a new discussion.
I created a bunch of slideshows in CS3 using Insert - Media - Image Viewer. I was looking for an easy way for my client to update the site themselves. Even though it creates a Flash element, it is easy for them to go in and switch out the images. All they do is click on the slideshow box, hit Window - Tag Inspector and click on the little folder at the side of the Image URLs' line. Nothing could be simpler. Well...I went in to see my client to show her how to do this but she has CS4. When I tried to do the same thing, nothing looked the same. The tag inspector did not have the same elements in it at all. Does this mean she cannot edit the slideshows I have created? Ugh...
If anyone can help with a work around to this...I'd be very grateful!

Enabling Installation of CS3 and CS4 products that will not install on Windows 7 64Bit.

Adobe installers are not known for their helpful or forgiving ways & I have more than once had to reinstall Windows when installation of CS3 and CS4 products has failed with patently inscrutable errors.
The background to the current issue that I was attempting to install PS CS4 on a W7 system which already had CS CS3 installed. The CS4 installer threw up inscrutable messages indicating that the installation could not proceed and to contact Adobe (they are joking right ? Their phone & web support is notoriously UN-helpful).
After reading through threads suggesting that I uninstall CS3, apply CS3 and CS4 cleaning scripts I was in exactly same position I have found myself in on least 2 occasions with WinXP. By this time I couldn't event get CS CS3 to reinstall!
Then I decided to review the event log and found a number of installer events thrown up by the Adobe installers resembling "Error 1402. Could not open key: UNKNOWN\Components\xxxxxxxx".
I tracked down this very helpful solution which allowed me to change the registry permissions on the parent key HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Installer\UserData\S-1-5-18\ Components and propagate the new permissions down to the child keys.

My advice is to follow instructions for "A More All-Encompassing Solution" and propagate the permissions right down to all the child keys as I could see a number of separate adobe installer errors in the event log. Also note the instruction to change the Owner from 'System' to 'Administrators' in Advanced settings. This is necessary in order for the Permissions change to be accepted and replace all the child object permissions.
As with most registry changes good advice to backup your registry hive first (although I didn't; by this time I was already expecting to have to reinstall Windows) and restart your system after making the registry changes before attempting to install / reinstall CS3 or CS4 products.
Hope this solution works as well for others as it did for me as the Adobe support on this issue has been next to useless.
[P.S. Q: Did you hear the joke about the guy who worked on product installation at Adobe rocking up at job interview with 'Adobe Installation Project Team' on his Resume? A: That that is the joke! If you wanted another job in installation development you would hardly admit to experience at Adobe ;)]

End of Upgrade Cycle for CS3 and CS4... Really Adobe?

As if business wasn't bad enough now I see there will be no upgrade paths past december for CS3 and 4 users. Is this how Adobe plans to keep users away from stopping their upgrades and reducing the number of machines they run Adobe products on? I understand Adobe is not a non-profit and has has to turn a revenue, but the geniuses at Marketing here have made a huge mistake by basically telling their customers that what they have so far will be worth zilch in comes 2013. That arbitrary deadline, is not consider some people who on the east coast are now cash strapped as anyone having to choose between home repairs and other such marvelous stuff and upgrading to CS6 guess what they'll choose. And for the lucky ones not heavily affected by the storms, they will donate to help their community before they will spend money to upgrade perfectly good software.
It wasn't enough that the upgrade path wasn't much of a discount, but in the current economy every penny counts! The choice of stopping support for CS3 and CS4 in my personal opinion an ill-advised move. I personally went from 3 to 4 within a short amount of time... then when 5 came out my budget didn't allow so I needed to wait. The new CS6 isn't direly needed so I decided I'd have to loose some additional "upgrade power" because money need to be directed elsewhere now... but the news that I'd loose all the upgrade power and would have kept on upgrading for nothing it's just ridiculous... and if that's the treatment a customer will have to expect from now on I think I'll use what I have and move to alternatives stopping to personally support Adobe products an rely on licensed copies at work instead. Perhaps Adobe hasn't notices we aren't exactly doing that great in US between the current economical situation, the various setbacks experienced across the country and for the fact that in this particular business most work is often being outsourced out of US these days... I am sure you will have a huge market on the countries where the outsourced work is being sent... as far as I am concerned comes 12/31/2013 I will no longer be an Adobe customer as Adobe is forcing me out of the upgrade cycle and I won't plan to re-enter anytime soon in the coming future... lesson learnt.

Adobe doesn't care, they don't have to. I like Phsotoshop and have been using it professionally for 20 years, but lets face it, I wouldnt mind some really good competition from another source. It didnt use to be the only game in town, and doesnt have to remain so.
I could brainstorm how I would want competing software to look like. Pshop is not the easiest workflow possible. Illustrator is clearly deficient to even CorelDraw, and certainly Freehand. I've been meaning to reconnect with CorelDraw. It did some cool things.
Google Chrome is pulling a lot of manoevers software wise and I hope they try to go a little deeper and give Adobe a run for their money on the one program they feel justifies unbelievable gouging. Go investigate Ableton Live if you want to see what a company that cares about its customers is doing, ADOBE. Audition is a JOKE compared to Ableton Live. Thank God we're not powned on the audio side by these suits.
The idea that a company would peddle buggy software, which CS4 was..., although some of that was Apple's fault, is bad, the upgrade prices were ridiculous, and this is the end of the road for me currently. The idea that a company would actively
push away customers is pretty incredible. "But I sent you an email!" Whoops, you gotta pay $1900 for production premium CS6! HAHAHAHAHA. Time for a YT video with my old hard copy box. Sounds like a good idea.
There are too many options on the motion graphics side, and I'll keep a static machine to run Pshop and AE CS4.
The masters of the universe will have theit way, and the rest must bow to their ambivalent greed. At least that's the way they think. It would seem that Adobe and Apple really, really want some upstarts to come up. Maybe $360 for a year to figure out an exit might work. It will be interesting to see if this hits earnings. VERY interesting.

MXF clips do not open in CS3 of CS4 (windows vista ultimate)

I have Sony DXCAM's MXF's which I can not import in Premiere (neither CS3 nor CS4). I did convert the original MXF's using Sony's DXCAM software.
Adobe claims it supports MXF files. Another editing company which uses CS3 can import XMF's using a Windows XP machine. I work on Vista Ultimate.
I have an itch that I am missing a vital codec of somekind, but I can not find out why my copies of CS3 and CS4 of Premiere Pro do not allow me to import MXF files. From within the Media browser in CS4 it results in the same disappointing result. It doesn't open.
When I tried to open one MXF file in CS3 the program crashes and forces me to close it. In CS4 I get an error message after importing which reads; "Unsupported format or damaged file."
Any help is very much appreciated, as I need to start my editing ASAP>

Thanks for your feedback. The first thing I tried was to import the MXF packages (I don't see lone MP4's) into Premiere. That did not work. So I exported the MXF files using Sony's U1 player/recorder.
I think its a Vista and/or codec problem, as my friend who workes on an XP machine is able to open MXF's in CS3.

Do paragraph style overrides work differently in CS3 vs CS4?

Hi All-
I’m in the process of moving a workflow from CS3 to CS4, and have run into an unexpected problem. In the existing CS3 workflow, we receive copyedited text with Word paragraph styles applied, then import this text into our InDesign template. This template has all the same paragraph style names as the Word file, so we tell InDesign to use the InDesign style definitions in the Import options. So, for instance, the Word style for Para_Text is Times New Roman 12pt, and the InDesign style for Para_Text is Helvetica Neue 8pt, and on Import InDesign automatically changes it to Helvetica Neue 8pt. This is as we want it.
Things fall apart, however, when we import the same text into the same template in InDesign CS4. It still applies the InDesign style definition, but has additional overrides to make it look like the Word style definition. So, it recognizes that the underlying paragraph style should be Helvetica Neue 8pt, but it then preserves Times New Roman 12pt as an override. If I select the text and do Clear Overrides, it’ll revert to the Helvetica Neue 8pt we want it in, but for other reasons that solution is less than ideal.
I think I can come up with a rather kludgy way around this, but I’m trying to understand exactly why we’re getting the different behavior in CS4. It seems like paragraph style conflicts are being handled in a different way in CS3 than CS4 – in CS3, if the InDesign paragraph style specifically spelled out a font, that would dominate on import; now, in CS4, it’s allowing the Word paragraph style to seep through as an override. Any thoughts as to why this is happening?

The latest Eizo 5.2.1 software fixed the problem on all 3 Eizo monitors.. Weeee
I'm back to normal.
Now i just have another damn problem started not long ago ;(
My Photoshop CS3 and CS4 keeps crashing on me after a wile of work ???
I tried everything. Deleted preffs etc. etc.
It have been working for long long time but suddenly it keeps crashing all the time.
I tried to remove some new plug-ins, but it was not that.
Only thing i did also was to install new ram.
Upgraded from 10GB to 14GB in all our Mac Pro.
So after i tried to switch the ram around to check if some was bad.
Also run some memory software but everything came out right.
So now the only thing left is that Photoshop dosent like ram between 14GB & 16GB.
Under was fine and i never tried over 16 gigs.. weird
Any ide what could corse this ?

Colors are different in PS CS3 Vs CS4, Why ?

I just found out that colors of a photo in CS3 is not looking the same in CS4 ?
I have a G5 with Geforce 6600 card in and i had to turn of OpenGL because it was so slow when it was enabled.
Then i tried to open both Photoshop CS3 and CS4 at the same time to check a picture and saw for my suprice that the colors was not identical.. Weird.
It is lighter in PS CS4 that in CS3
Also from Bridge CS4 to Photoshop CS4 it was different.
Is that normal. I woulden say.
In my Suite CS3 all colors looks the same in Bridge and PS. OFCAUSE.
I did check my color settings first. They are the same all over (Adobe 98)
Is it a bug or is it because i turned of the open GL settings in PS CS4 ?
If it is because i turned of the Open GL settings in PS CS4, that would be a very bad
thing to do because many people have older computers where the GPU dosent work
well with the Open GL settings ON and you can at least work when its OFF.
But not if the colors are not right.
Please. If someone could replay on this matter. I'm sure more people will like to know
this. I'm not even sure many people noticed this, so everybody.
If you have Creative Suite CS3 and CS4 on your Mac.
Try uncheck the Open GL settings in PS CS4 and restart PS.
Then compare the picture in PS CS3 and CS4 at the same time !!!

Need help deleting unused swatches in CS4

I upgraded from CS3 to CS4, and simultaneously switched platforms from windows to mac osx. Now I can't find the option for deleting all unused swatches in the swatch palette menu and I'm starting to feel insane because I've run several searches and no information about this is popping up anywhere. Can anyone help?

That's one way, I guess. But in CS3 I was able to select all unused swatches and then drag them to the trash. That way I could still have my default swatches for new projects. But I guess this feature was removed for CS4?

CF8 Help in Dreamweaver CS3

Does anyone know how to configure Dreamweaver CS3 to show CF8
help when I hit F1 while I have a CF tag highlighted?

Never used CF Studio or HomeSite so I don't know how they
worked. Perhaps you can explain more about what you're actually
like to have happen.
There is the CF8 updater extension for Dreamweaver (for CS3
and CS4):

Creating a text box over a photo.
I have been using a technique in CS3 learned from
"totaltraining.com"
I could take a photo into photoshop and slice it into areas
where I want to create a text block and use the photoshop save to
web application to write the html code and create the images. then
I open the html file in Dreamweaver CS3 and select the sliced block
image that I want to add text on top of and copy the link
information, Then Delete the image and add the hight measurement to
keep the space from shifting then paste the link information into
the box background in the control pallet at the bottom. Then insert
text on top of the background image. This gives me the ability to
use the page properties to add a over all background color or image
and still have a text box with the photo behind it.
The problem is that with new Dreamweaver CS4 I can not find
where to paste the link information. The control pallet has changed
and I can not find out how to add the image back into the cell as a
background. I have tried to just place the image into the cell but
everything shifts.
I know their is probably a better way to do this I am just
learning and trying to figure this out so any advice would be
helpful.
I would just use Dreamweaver3 but the demo I was working on
expired and I bought the CS4 package.
I have a website 80% finished and now I'm stuck.

Things that you 'used to be able to do but cannot in CS4' are
generally
things that you should never have done in the first place. A
big thrust of
CS4 is to remove things from DW that created invalid or
non-best practice
HTML. This method certainly sounds like a good candidate -
for example:

should only use a graphics app to write HTML that is to be

prototyping, not for production.

happens with the

There are now two buttons on the Property inspector: HTML and
CSS. Click
the HTML one.

Which is why you should never use "wizard" HTML.

Help reactivating PS CS3

I need a solution to reactivate my CS3 and CS4 products to use on my laptop since my MacPro is down. I have all proper serial #s but the programs won't connect and they have removed phone activation as an option. I have tried to contact support several times with no response from Adobe.

That's interesting. In my old permanent license copies, CS3-CS6, I entered the serial number to install and if it was an upgrade, the serial number from the previous product . When the install was done, I went to Help > Activate, no activation number needed. Never.
I don't know exactly what you got and where, but it does not seem like a normal Photoshop license. I've know some shady sellers breaking up volume licenses and selling them as single copies, still all I know it's not a normal permanent license.
I'm also a forum volunteer, not an Adobe employee. I have no authority over serial numbers and activations. My only concern was perhaps the software acting up
and I could direct a reinstall.

CS3 and CS4 Crashes (Open, Save, Randomly)

We have some users at my company that for sometime now have been having issues with all CS3 and CS4 products crashing when doing any sort of work. As the title states, the crashes were on opening, saving, sometimes randomly as well, and even renders in AE would fail.
After many trials and tribulations we finally got an error message that pointed us to something credible. The error message was "After Effects warning: GDI+ not intialized.", this happened on import of .psd file as a composition into AE. I found a thread on some Developers who were expierencing this error in their own programs, and Visual Studio.

This pointed to Turtoise CVS 1.10.1, which convientently we had installed on all our workstations. We updated to the latest version Turtoise CVS (1.10.10) and all of our troubles have gone away. Went from upto a half dozen crashes a day to zero, and even any issues we had with rendering went away.
I am posting this as it took awhile to find the cause of the crashing, and hope that it will helps someone else that this issue has frustrated.
Note: CS2 ran fine with Turtoise CVS 1.10.1
