Help iDVD to ML

I am in the process of upgrading from Leopard to Snow Leopard, and then to Mountain Lion.  I was planning on doing a clean sweep, and backing up all of my old content, starting fresh with the new OS.  If I drag and save iDVD to my external drive, will I be able to upload it as usable in Mountain Lion?

Hello Alex108,
Welcome to the Discussions.
The limitation for iDVD is not the amount of content in GB sizes, but only the time-length of the movie. For single-layer DVDs, the limit is 2 hours; twice that for dual layer. That time limit includes all content on the disk--movie, audio, menu components.
Your movie of 1hr 55min leaves only 5 min for menu content so you would be pushing it unless you opted for very simple menu(s).
If your menu(s) are more complex, your total content would exceed the capacity for single-layer DVD, so you would need to burn a dual-layer disk.
It sounds as if you are having problems with creating the dual layer DVD since your 33 second test disk did not play.
Dual-layer disks are trickier. I try to stick to single layers.
You could see if you could eliminate another minute or two from your iMovie. I have successfully burned 1 hr 56 min movies on single-layer DVD disks using a simple menu.
Yes, Memorex DVD disks have been reported to burn inconsistently. Apparently, their layers are not the same quality or thickness as those of the more reliable DVD disks such as Verbatim, Maxell, Taio Yuden, and Sony. I have seen some new Memorex DVDs that appear to be thicker, but I do not use them. I use exclusively Verbatim Archival Gold DVD-R disks and have had no problems with them.
Also, you can select a slower burn speed; at least 4x or less. If your burn is not being completed, try it at 1x or 2x.
You can also create a disk image of your project, and burn from that using Disk Utility. I know that it is reported that you cannot burn a disk image of a dual-layer project, but others have reported doing this. If the disk image file is successfully created, you will be able to successfully burn the DVD disk.
Post back if you have further questions. Good luck meeting your deadline.

  • HELP, iDVD 08 cannot find my iMove 6 HD movie

Hated iMovie 08 so I downloaded the iMovie 6 HD. Built my movie in 6 HD and selected share with iDVD. Problem is iDVD cannot see any movie for me to drag it into the movie section so I can burn my DVD. It only seems to recognize the movies I tried to create with the newer iMovie 08.
Surely, there is a way for me to get my iMovie 6HD project into iDVD 08 so I can burn, right? Please help.

How did you share / export your movie to iDvd'08 from iM6?
    Was it like this?
    1. Click Here:
    Like this perhaps?
    2. Click Here:
    3. Or did you use the media/ movies pane within iDvd itself?
    4. There is a 4th approach also (drag and drop of the QT movie to iDvd).
If none of the above works for you, then try a different QT file /movie. If that too fails (and assuming you have at least 25GB's on your main HD/Boot volume) then you need to consider a re-installation of the software. (but I'm hopeful that won't be necessary).

  • Help - iDVD window won't come out and play!

This is a very weird situation and hope someone else has a solution. I use iDVD all the time and this is the first time I have encountered this problem. If I launch an existing iDVD project, it will load - I hear the motion music and the iDVD drop down menu headers appear in the menu bar. If I select a command from the drop down menu - like "Save as" - the dialog box genies down from the right side of the menu bar. Expose does not find the window.
I do use an external monitor to increase my work space. I have tried arranging the monitors differently, moving the menu bar around, disconnecting the external display, changing the display resolutions all without any luck. I was able to use iDVD by logging into the Guest user account and launching from there. But I don't want to have to do that for every iDVD project.
Any help from the Mac community would be greatly appreciated.

Found the answer finally by searching thru the old posts. Here is the answer for anyone else that might run into this.
Try the following: close iDVD, delete the iDVD preference file, com.apple. iDVD.plist, that resides in your User/Library/Preferences folder, launch iDVD and see if that helps.

  • IDVD doesnot accept 4.7GB DVD R..Help, iDVD doesnot accept 4.7GB DVD R..Help

Hey, I am using iDVD in my Mac osX 10.6.8. I have a 4.7GB Sl SVS. i DVD doesnot accept it!! What to do? Please help

I do not know anything about Moserbear DVDs - Guess that it's not High Quality brand
I only use Verbatim - Tayio Yuden also supposed to be top quality (more organic dye on those)
4.7Gb - will be 4.2Gb when created as Video-DVDs and is Single Layer (SL)
The iDVD pref file is a document iDVD creates to keep info from session to next one. As frame rate, 4x3 or 16x9, prefered encoding quality etc.
This document can be corrupted from time to time (rather common). By trashing it iDVD is forced to create a brand new Error Free one on next start-up.
One has to set format and frame rate etc. on next start up but that's all that one has to keep in mind.
You find this on - Start-Up (Mac OS) hard disk (often named
    Macintosh HD)/Users/"Your account"/Library/Preferences
And here You find - com.apple.iDVD.plist
WHEN iDVD IS NOT RUNNING - Drag this file out to DeskTop. Then start iDVD. If all is OK then trash the pref file on desktop.

  • Help- IDVD

Im kind of lost with IDVD 09. I have Final cut Express and want to export my different movies into IDVD. How do I do that? I opened IDVD but I dont know how to make the different movies segments flow from one into the other like a real movie. It keeps going back to the menu and I can then click the segment for a preview. I dont want to burn this until I have it set up correctly.
I am totally lost how to make one movie segment flow into another one.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Hi
    a. From FCE(P I export out as QuickTime .mov file. NOT selfcontained, NO QuickTime Conversion.
    b. There is no Play All button in iDVD - It has to be faked.
    1. Either make a double of Your material. One set of segments and one full movie.
Call the full Movie in iDVD "Play All"
    2. Or add Your movies into the SlideShow function. This will also work as a Play All function.
(Not tested by me - but very often mentioned in this forum as an solution)
    3. Use another program than iDVD eg Roxio Toast™ which have a Play All function.

  • HELP: iDVD plays back audio all distorted and slow

I just created a movie in iMovieHD. It looks and sounds great in iMovieHD. I then chose the iDVD button to export my movie to iDVD. After it rendered in iDVD and I play it back, the pictures looks beautiful but the audio is all distorted and is playing back at least 5 times too slow compared to the original audio. My audio source in iMovieHD was an AIFF file from iTunes. My iMovie is still photos from iPhoto set to the music from iTunes.

    Hi David:
Extracting the audio tracks in imovie first will often fix the problem.

  • Help iDVD 6

I have read tons of ideas here, but can not solve my problem. I am trying to create a DVD from a project in iMovie that is about 38 minutes long consisting of a slide show with music and a 11 minute QT video with sound.
I have one chapter marker, that at the point where the video begins.
I have 140 gig free on my internal HD.
I have tried Apple DVD's and Memorex DVD's.
The problem is that I get the Error encoding video message after the blue bar fills up and just before the burn step. Nothing I have done seems to fix it.
I have tried the save as a disk image and the same thing occurs at the same spot. I do not get image.
However, the file plays in preview correctly and there are no errors in my map view.
I need to get this project completed today. Any ideas would be very much appreciated.

OK...after a ton of time, I think I found a short cut to learn where the problem is...within iMovie, if you chose File >Export and then choose Expert, you can choose a export type. If you choose QT or DV, within 10 seconds you get a message that says it contains content that can not be compressed or it immediately begin exporting.
By using this I determined I had a RAW image in my slide show and an audio file that was copy protected even though iMovie accepted it. Normally if you try to put an iTune file into iMovie, it will not accept it. For some reason, this file was.
Removing the RAW image and fixing the audio appears to allow the export to happen. Given the time of day, I decided to resume tomorrow and do what I think will be the final fixes.
Thanks for your assistance. I will close this thread tomorrow if all works as I anticipate it will.

  • Help Viewer can't handle IDVD Help URL

I am seeing the following message when I try to access iDVD Help.
Help View does not know how to handle the seclected URL.
    The selected URL is: /Applications/iDVD.app/Contents/Resources/English.lproj/iDVD Help/iDVD Help.html
I can open the file if I go to /Applications/iDVD.app/Contents/Resources/English.lproj/iDVD Help/iDVD Help.html and double clip on the file.
    Has anyone else seen this?

    Hi, Tony.
If you're running Mac OS X 10.4.3 as your profile indicates, update to Mac OS X 10.4.6. See the sections:
    • "Help Viewer displays a blank window."
    • "Help Viewer links do not work"
in my "Troubleshooting Help Viewer" FAQ. That should solve the problem so you don't have to disconnect your Ethernet cable to use Help Viewer.
    Good luck!

  • Aspect ratio issue when watching 16'9 idvd created DVDs on regular players

I am having problems with the aspect ratio of any DVDs that I burn in iDVD as 16'9 - The original video is 16'9 and edited as such in FCP, then exported with current settings selected and then in iDVD I select a widescreen project - preview of the project is fine and when the DVD is done it plays with the correct aspect ratio if I watch on the computer's internal DVD player - but my issue is when I watch on any regular DVD player (on a widescreen tv of course) all the video looks tall and skinny, including the menu.  The only way I found to get the video to look like it's natural proportion is to switch the settings to 4'3 on the DVD player, then it creates almost a "super-widescreen" look where there are bars at the top and bottom of the screen.  On the otherhand, when i used to shoot in 4'3 and create DVDs as 4'3 projects, I NEVER had this problem when watching on a regular DVD player on widescreen TV!  It would take up the whole screen and look normal (I know it must stretch it to fit, but it wasn't noticable).  I thought creating a 16'9 video I should be able to watch on a widescreen TV and it should take up the whole screen and look normal.  Please help!

No, that is not the way it should work. This may help:

  • Pixelated pictures when dvd is played after burning in IDVD

I have created a slideshow in iDVD - all went well. I have burned to a dvd however, when the dvd is played on our dvd player/tv the pictures are terribly pixelated. (they look fine on the preview during the project) - rather frustrating when the thing takes HOURS to burn as there are 1000+ images. Any advice to be offered as to why this is happening and how to prevent it? Many thanks.

    Hi Lyn Olds
Welcome to apple discussions. If you haven't already, take a look at apple's tutorial for iDvd. They really do help.
    iDVD Tutorial:
    http://www.apple.com/ilife/tutorials/#idvd
iDVD 8 Manual, as pdf, so download it. It is very helpful:
    http://support.apple.com/manuals/#idvd
Keep in mind the protocol for burning a dvd is rather specific and reduces the resolution of most images to 640 x 480. That's less than a third of a megapixel for still images. Most burned Dvd's are lagging well behind the capabilities of current hi-resolution cameras and camcorders.
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=iDVD/7.0/en/6675.html
You may also want to take a look at these 3 apps that specialize in quality slideshows. They come highly recommended on this forum (especially the first one).
    http://www.boinx.com/fotomagico/overview/
    http://boinx.com/photopresenter/overview/
    http://www.lqgraphics.com/software/phototomovie.php
If the above apps don't meet your needs then search this forum for other solutions like using Ken Burns effect to minimize pixelation via a QT movie.
I believe OT does a great job of explaining this per the following link:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=8164545&#8164545
Btw, the only way I am aware of to burn High Resolution DVD’s is with Roxio’s Toast and a Blue Ray burner.
Another solution is to simply hook your TV to the Mac for playback. That or consider using AppleTV which essentially circumvents the need to burn a dvd altogether.

  • Using Garageband files with IDVD

I am posting this question again hoping someone can answer. I posted my question in the idvd forum and got zero responses. I used imovie08 and successfully edited a 58 minute movie and published it as a medium sized movie. I then used garageband to add chapter markers and I chose the yes option for ilife preview. I opened idvd and clicked on add movie. From media files I choose the audio files and attempt to drag and drop my garageband movie file into the add movie icon. But nothing happens. Add movie won't take the file from garageband. If I open my media files and use the imovie file that hasn't gone through the garageband chaptering process the file will drop in. But this doesn't give me the chapters that I want. Something I tried in idvd I used the menu view, highlighted that and used the advanced tool to create chapter markers hoping that this would help idvd to recognize my garageband file with previously made chapters. This doesn't work for me.
So what am I doing wrong? I did this process once before and finally after days of trying it worked for me. I chalk that one up to dumb luck. But now I can't repeat the process and have no idea how to get past this problem. I am running a business here and need to get on with this, please someone help me.
    Thanks,
    Zach

    Zach,
Did you choose the option of sending the movie (from GB with the chapters) to iDVD?? Secondly, where is the option for 'iLife preview'?

  • Iphoto Pics on IDVD - why poor quality when shown on TV?

When I download IPhoto pics using IDVD and show them on my tv, the quality of the pictures is far less than when I view them on my computer screen.  Is there anything I can do to improve the quality?

This might help: iDVD 7.0 Help (iLife '08): Preparing images for iDVD slideshows.  If you intend to use the Ken Burns effect then I'd doulbe the size recommended in the above article.
Once you have the project as you want it save it as a disk image via the File ➙ Save as Disk Image menu option.  This will separate the encoding process from the burn process.  To check the encoding mount the disk image and launch DVD Player and play it.
If it plays OK with DVD Player the encoding was good and you can then burn to disk with Disk Utility at the slowest speed available, 2x-4x, to assure the highest burn quality.  Always use top quality media:  Verbatium, Maxell or Taiyo Yuden DVD-R are the most recommended in these forums.

  • Can't export to iDVD

I used to do this with no problem. When I try to export to iDVD I get the following error "The movie could not be sent to iDVD, because of an unknown error. Please make sure that iDVD is properly installed, that your disk has write permission, and that you have enough disk space. (Error 0)." I have almost 17GB free plus another 200GB on an external HD. Any ideas? Thanks!

    Hi
This is a forum where most of us is just consumers - not Apple employe.
    Trying to help each other.
When dropping the movie icon into the theme window it can land in two
    areas.
one which will give the movie title - this to click on when wanting to view the movie and
one that works like a display area button that show up a part of the movie
    on the intro-menu.
Check where You dropped the movie icon.
To delete iDVD pref file and then start a new fresh iDVD project might also help.

  • Is there a possibility to import a theme (Idvd) to Premiere Elements or Pro

    Hi there,
I finally have received my new MBP and was surprised by the new themes of idvd. These Themes are great and I would like to have them also in Premiere Elements or Premiere Pro.
Does anybody have an idea or an advise how to get reasonable Themes to Premiere Elements/Pro.
    Thanks for your help.

iDVD themes can't be transferred to other applications, particularly non-Apple ones.
    Ask Adobe regarding Premier.
