Help! Illustrator turned my paths with gradients into (pixel) images.

This occured after I masked a portion of the illustration and then unmasked it. Now I am unable to alter the shapes because Illustrator is seeing them as placed images.
This has never happened before! Is this a glitch in Illustrator or can it be fixed? I spent many hours on this illustration.

No, I had created the mask, saved and closed the file. I didn't realize what happened until I opened it up again and wanted to alter the image some more. Actually, I should be more specific about what Illustrator did. When I unmasked the illustration, it had turned all of the images with paths (that also had a feather on them) into LINKS. They appear to be embedded. But I didn't link anything. So I guess I should be okay if I need to resize it?? I just am not able to edit those shapes any longer. Very strange. I've never had this happen before.

My iphone turned off and i can't turn it on. I tried to turn it on with plugging into charger but it doesn't help. the problem is that the power button doesn't work.

Well, that is going to make it difficult, since the first two steps of user troubleshooting require the use of the power button. I suggest you get that fixed.

  • IPhoto destructively turned all pictures with faces into thumbnails

I just noticed a gigantic problem with my iPhoto library. Images taken with multiple 5MP+ cameras all were destructively converted in the iPhoto library. The pattern I detected is that every photo with a face detected in it by iPhoto had its original picture turned into a 0.3MP thumbnail and the original sized picture is lost. Even if I go into ~/Pictures/iPhoto\ Library/Masters have been reduced in size. Of all my pictures in the last ~10 years that I used iPhoto to solely manage, none that has a face in it has been spared.
What is going on? Why would Apple ever want to destructively modify original imports?

No - it has nothin to do with Aperture and iPhtoo sharing the same library
the next thing to do is
Connect the two Macs together (network, firewire target mode, etc)  or use an external hard drive formatted Mac OS extended (journaled) and drag the iPhoto library intact as a single entity from the old Mac to the pictures folder of the new Mac - launch iPhoto on the new mac and it will open the library and convert it as needed and you will be ready move forward.
It is very likely that you did not do this but that you imported the old liberary - NEVER import an iPhoto library into another iPhoto library - but even if you did it correctly something went wrong and you need to redo it

  • I get more and more Illustrator files from customers with gradients that are messed up, the files are cut in a lot of square and mask

What do they do wrong so I can instruct them?

Yes, a PDF exported by any application (as opposed to one saved in Illustrator with 'Preserve Illustrator Editing Capabilities' selected) is likely to have transparency stitching and clipping masks in its makeup. No version-matching will change that.
Which leads me to a quote a line posted frequently here in the Illustrator forum: "Illustrator is not a general purpose PDF editor."

  • Make objects with gradient into a stroke style for frames

    Hi Guys,
I need the frame of the image below as a stroke style (or at least I prefer that above having to copy-paste the elements of the sides 100 times along a frame in my design )
The thing is: it contains gradients. How do I get the frame to a stroke style so I can easily use it in Illustrator?
    Many Thanks

    Hi BobM1990,
If you are on AICC, you can try using the Image Brushes. You will have to crop the relevant portion of the image and use it appropriately so as to get the desired result.
You can look for more about image brushes here:

  • Help! Getting clipping paths back on exported lightroom images!

    A bit of a problem.
I have 22,000 images, half of which were colour corrected in lightroom, but all 22,000 were exported from lightroom.
So, out of the 22,000 exported files I don't know which ones were colour corrected or not, which is not important until I realise that non of my clipping paths stayed with the exported files.
There were clipping paths on about 6,000 of these images.
So first, is there any way of finding from the exported files which ones were worked on in lightroom?
Secondly, is there a clever scripty way of bringing a clipping path from one photoshop file to another photoshop file (pixel perfect).... preferbly maybe having a folder full of doner files that have the clipping paths that a script gets their clipping paths and puts them onto the photoshop files in the second folder (the two folders will have files with same file names?)

Unless you specifically set Lr to overwrite the original export creates anew file, which doesn't include layers, clipping paths, Smart Objects and a bunch of other Ps stuff. Hopefully, your original with clipping paths is still around because that's the only way you're getting them back.
BTW: as you've discovered, editing an image in Lr after t's been edited in Ps is leaving yourself open to a world of hurt, especially when the image includes editing features that Lr doesn't support.

  • HELP! - Having various probs with iPhoto formatting/constraining images

    Hello All,
I'm hoping someone out there can help me solve a few very frustrating problems that are occurring with iPhoto on my system since I upgraded to 10.5.2. These are:
    1. It persists in displaying all my thumbnails as compressed squares, regardless of whether they are portrait or landscape. It only does this with photos I have imported since I upgraded but it's hard to see what's what and just looks a bit rubbish. When I actually open up the image it displays correctly though at least.
    2. It seems to be struggling to work out whether my photos are portrait or landscape - possibly related to the problem above. If I go to an image and select constrain proportions to, say, 6X4, it automatically brings up the cropping box as either a landscape within a portrait pic, or a portrait within a landscape pic. When I scroll down to see whether it is selected as 'constrain to [portrait/landscape], it remains unticked, so I have to tick it with the wrong choice to enable me to then click it again with the right constraint before I can edit my pics - laborious and extremely annoying again!
    3. It just crashes ALL THE TIME!! It was always a slow programme but it literally crashes once every 2-5 minutes without fail now. All in all photo editing has become an extremely laborious, tedious and time consuming process - hence I have a camera full of three months pics waiting to be uploaded at present!
Everything else seems to be fine with the computer, all other programmes working normally, just iPhoto - if anyone has any ideas on what I can do or experience of the same problems please do let me know! Have tried installing the latest iPhoto updates online and have played around with the settings etc but all to no avail. Can anyone out there help me?!?
    Yours hopefully!

    Jolene
Welcome to the Apple user discussion forums
1 - back up your iPhoto library
2 - rebuild the library (launch iPhoto while depressing the option (alt) and the command (apple) keys - try the first three options first
the cropping issue will not change except that it should always start in landscape mode (I believe) - but for a portrait photo you have to do the two step selection - let Apple know of your suggestion - iPhoto menu ==> provide iPhoto feedback)
How big a hard drive do you have and how much space is free? You should have 10% of the drive with no less than 10GB free space for proper OS X operation
As to the three months photos on your camera I would recommend that you use image capture to copy them to your computer (it is in your Applications folder) and back them up for safety

  • When coppying an Illustrator CS2 gradient into photoshop CS2

I am used to using the old Illustrator CS and older Photoshop CS versions, but when I switched to CS2 for my job, I found I could not easilly copy and paste graphics with gradients into a photoshop document as before. It copies over as just a white box instead of the gradient. It usually gives 4 ways of letting you copy them over. either as a shape layer, path etc. and none of these settings works. Is there something I am missing?
    any help greatly appreciated.
    Thanks!
    Michelle

    Hi.
I just had the same issue with Illy and PS cs5, and this is what I discovered:
When you open a new document in Illustrator you get a dialog window asking you about the size of the document and so on. Under the option 'new document profile' you get options like: Print, Web, mobile & devices, and more.
If you choose web (or maybe some of the others too, im not sure. cause i just encountered this issue when using the web option), you get the issue with colored gradients turning greyscale/loosing color information.
This happens eventhough you are using the same rgb color space in both PS and ILLY.
    My solution:
Copy the artwork in the ILLY file you want to paste into PS, and copy it into a new ILLY document with the 'new document profile' set for 'Print' and voila: now you can paste colored gradients into PS.
    Hope this helps

  • Dealing with non-square pixels from video capture (CS3)

    Hi all,
This is the problem I have : I watch a video on my PC using any utility such as, for example, CyberLink's PowerDVD. I pause the movie to capture a frame to the Clipboard, then I paste it into PS CS3 via a newly created document.
Because the movie was shot and recorded on the DVD in widescreen format, therefore using non-square pixels (wider than they are tall), the still image in PS appears "shrunk" horizontally. I then go to Image|Pixel Aspect Ratio and set the ratio to, say, "D1/DV PAL Widescreen (1.42)", as I am in PAL-land. The still image now looks fine, and I can save it, for example in TIFF format ; it will retain its "non-square pixel" attribute, with the black bands on top and at the bottom.
However, what I utimately want to do is use that still image on the Web, so I need to save it as a JPEG image, and this is where the problem happens : the JPEG conversion reverts those pixels to square ones, whether I use the "Save for Web and Devices..." option, or just the "Save As..." one.
How can I turn my very heavy TIFF into a much leaner JPEG, while retaining the non-square pixels that give the image its correct proportions ? Is there a way around this problem ?
I'm not used to dealing with non-square pixel images, so any help and tip will be greatly appreciated. Many thaks in advance.
    Dominic.

As Zeno said, you can simply copy&paste. Also, there is always an equivalent square pixel format for each anamorphic format that can fully accommodate the image, which would be 1024x576 for PAL widescreen. For more info on PAR conversions, I recomemnd you do some reading in the online help files for After Effects or Premiere Pro.

  • Why does Illustrator CS4 save pdfs with clipping paths and make rasters of gradient areas

I am on a IMAC and upgraded to 10.6.8 Jan 2014. I am using CS4 Illustrator to create with. When i save my work as a pdf then reopen the pdf in Ill to make changes, the whole page has:
A.) Multiple clipping paths around it
B.) Most text has now become outlined. Not editable anymore.
C.) Gradient areas have multiple clipping paths of the single gradient area
D.) The gradient areas now become rasterized.
This is very frustrating as now all of my marketing files, some 300+, are worthless. I don't know where to look anymore to find the problem.
    Please help.
    Thank you very much

    John,
I have the presets as you have shown. I had been editing the supplied items as you suggested. Then figured i should ask the questions of those who are better than I.
But still a bit confused as to why the new save places clipping paths around the document.
Thank you John and Monika for your help.

I do a save as "pdf" in the format pull down tab. I save to a folder on the hard drive. Where is the "Illustrator editability" check box? I presumed it is in Acrobat some where
but i seem to be lost.
It is in Illustrator's Save Adobe PDF dialog, which pops up before the saved file is written.

Sorry i didn't mention this, but this seems to have occurred when using images and text from provided pdfs.
That's a critical fact. If you didn't do the original save, the above is moot, and it's too late to exercise any control over the save process. Someone else failed to save for editability. The only thing you can do is clean up/repair the content, (release clipping masks, rebuild rasterized elements, expand objects, etc.), and save correctly as AI. Then, if necessary, re-save as PDF with the correct settings.

    Hello Creative Cloud Illustrator Community:
    Help Please!
This is with regard to creating a compound path:
I have set some white type on a circle and then created outlines. I then placed the outlined type on a black stroked ring which I then selected "outlined stroke." I then put both "outlined" graphical elements on a separate solid bkg. (all 3 are on the same layer). Lastly, I then selected the top two elements and went to "make" a "compound path" (because I want the type to be the "holes" so I can see through to the background). However, the only effect I get is the white outlined type turning black (the same color as the black ring). What am i doing wrong? I can achieve the desired result with simple boxes but it won't work with a circular type path, a stroked ring and a solid bkg.
Any help on this would be greatly appreciated!
    Thank You!

    Thanks for the response Jacob.
Unfortunately, I tried your suggestion with no success. BTW, minus front is now Subtract. Apparently, by clicking option>subtract, it works in the same way as minus front. I tried this to no avail.
    Let me reiterate please.
I have 3 graphic elements-all on the same layer:
    1. Background: Gold circle with a fill and no stroke.
    2. Middle: Black ring (Stroked) inside gold background circle.
    3. Top: White copy set on a circular type path and placed directly on top of middle black ring.
Both the middle black ring and top type path HAVE BEEN CONVERTED TO OUTLINES.
LASTLY, I select the Middle and Top, go to Compound Paths and choose "Make" and my white copy turns to black. Wrong!
WHAT I WANT TO HAPPEN: I want the white copy to become HOLES, so the GOLD background shows through.
Any solutions would be very much appreciated!

  • I'm wanting to mark a path with 397 equal sections (in length)- Help?

    Hi,
I'm working with a somewhat complex path (the Circuit De La Sarthe Track Map 2010) that I'm wanting to plot points on (to make an infographic of the 24hrs of Le Mans).
So I need to create marks around the path to indicate each lap (there were 397 laps).
I don't want to split/separate the path - just need to be able to clearly see 397 sections of equal length.
By length, I mean the length of the path if it was a straight line…
I've had a look at scrips and adding anchor points but am pretty in the dark about it all.
    Can anyone help me here?
    Cheers,
    Jordan.

    Hi Jacob,
Brilliant! That looks exactly what I'm after!
I'm in the process of executing the script, it's kind of crashed Illustrator (it currently isn't responding), I'm assuming it's just because 397 is a lot of sections… I might try it on a more powerful Mac and see if it works then.
    Will keep trying.
    Edit:
Okay so it does execute the script after some time, however there are sections of the path that aren't of equal distance, and it looks like it's just plotting too many points… Any ideas?
When using the script I just selected the whole path (with the regular cursor). Even when I input a lower number (eg. 50), it still gives some inconsistent areas within the path.
    Message was edited by: oxborough
    Edit:
Figured out the script was plotting 397 points into each 'side', so the line between each bezier point… It doesn't actually say on that link how to split the entire path - only each segment, which unfortunately doesn't solve the problem…

  • Saved files in illustrator turn into all black when viewing

    Hi All,
I've searched through the forums + google but haven't been able to get an answer on why this is happening.  Sometimes when I save files as a pdf in Illustrator, or receive files from other people the image loses it's colour.
All colour is just black.  I'm attaching a screen shot so you can see what I mean, the colours here are supposed to be a shades of a PMS colour, but instead they're all black.
    Hopefully someone can help!
    Thanks in advance.
    Jo

You should never view any PDF in any other program than Acrobat or Reader. All other viewers support only a subset of PDF standards, so they are not reliable viewer program.
The Word thing has nothing to do with Illustrator or PDF. You need to know,
in which program the Word embedded graphic was created.
how the graphic was saved as. Not every file type, which can be imported on Word in Windows is supported completely on the Mac, like EMF, WMF, but also other file types. (The other way round is also true.)
How the graphic was imported. Some people copy an image or a graphic from a source and paste it via clipboard. Which is not a good way, because it needs several system ressources from the local computer to show up in the host application, in that case in Word. If such a document is opened on a different computer, often even on the same Operating System, those images show up black. The only correct and robust way to import images in Word is via the Insert-Command or button with a compatible file selected.
Another problem might be, that an image or graphic was inserted in a version which creates docx files, like 2007 or 2010.Those versions support more graphic file types than older versions do. But because some people think, it is better to save files as DOC than as DOCX (smae with PowerPoint or Excel) for compability those images get lost and are only represented as black boxes. In my experience it happens often with PNG-24 files. It is never a good idea to save DOCX back to DOC. I inerit only problems with that workflow. (Also when I import files into InDesign I get always messed up with footnotes with this method, several get lost, several change their reference with each other, I have got DOCs where not even 1 of 400 footnotes was on its original place after import to InDesign. But this is another topic, but it is also an argument to avoid this workflow!)

Thanks for any help or advice <3

What i had to do is make each "gradient section" a different "shape", and make it exactly the right angle to contour with the flag...
Traditionally, that's part of  what you do to render realistic shading in vector drawing programs. Before features like transparency effects and gradient meshes, such drawings are basically a combination of the gradient fill types provided by the program (in Illustrator, limited to the most basic two: linear and radial) and object blends. In an illustration like your sample, with compound curvature surfaces, a key to that is understanding that you can create blends between grad fills.
So that drawing could be done using nothing more than those techniques: grad fills and blends. It would not be unusual for it to take 10 hours for a beginner not yet familiar with the tools to accomplish. An intermediate level user could do it in an hour or two.
Transparency effects and gradient meshes provide more options.
The trade-off with use of transparency effects is that you have to be aware of and vigilant about the fact that such effects often have to be rasterized as soon as they leave the drawing program, which--depending on the intended usage--can obviate the whole purpose of doing it in a vector program to begin with.
The trade-off with gradient meshes is that the interface for using them is quite unintuitive and particularly frustrating to beginners.
Beyond that general advice, you'd be asking for specifics on how to draw that partricular image of that particular flag; you'd essentially be asking for someone in a user forum to draw it for you as a custom step-by-step "tutorial".
