Help, iMac 27'' wireless keyboard types weird symbols, and mouse is crazy

Hello, I have had my iMac for about 6 months, and its been fine up until a few days ago. I downloaded an update, and now its going crazy.
When I type, the keyboard acts as though my alt key is stuck, and I get characters like: œ∑®∂¥†∫≤∫≈. But my volume control keys do not work. When I restart my computer, its fine for about an hour, then the crazy characters start again.
Also, when I am in Safari, my mouse downloads EVERY link I click on, as if I were right-clicking, then downloading the link.
If I use my remote, the Sound menu appears, instead of raising the volume.
Another thing I noticed, in my Apple menu, my "About this Mac" menu is gone. The icon closest to the top is the system preferences.
When I tried to check the keyboard preferences, bluetooth cannot find the keyboard. I'm thinking it may be a software problem, but I am not certain. I checked to make sure that my language in my system preferences was set to english, and no other languages are checked.
I also tried to re-download the OS X 10.6.4, I also downloaded the 10.6.4 Combo update.
I am soooo frusterated at this point, if anyone has any idea of what is going on, please help! Thank you for your help.

FWIW, you might want to try if _*resetting your Mac's PRAM and NVRAM*_ helps.
another thing to try is booting your Mac into _*safe mode*_, repairing permissions while in safe mode, then rebooting normally.

    HellO:
I would not waste time trying to troubleshoot the problem.  Since it is new, call Applecare with a warranty problem.  I had a similar problem with a new KB some time ago and it was replaced at no cost (shipping included).

I have a wireless keyboard for my ipad and it says to charge it connect it to my pc.  can i charge it by connecting it to my ipad?

No. The iPad's port won't put out enough power. You could probably plug your keyboard into your iPad charger and charge it that way, but it won't charge off the iPad.

  • When I try to connect my bluetooth keyboard to my ipad, the dialog box pops up and says: "Make sure 'Apple Wireless Keyboard' is turned on and in range." But the keyboard is turned on and is right in front of the ipad. Any thoughts?

When I try to cnnect my bluetooth keyboard to my ipad, the dialogue box pops up and says: "Make sure 'Apple Wireless Keyboard' is turned on and in range." The thing is, the keyboard is on and is sitting in front of the ipad. I have used it before, but not for many months. I changed the batteries today just in case. The green light on the keyboard comes on and continues blinking. What am I missing?

  • My wireless keyboard has come unpaired and I can't log in to my iMac to pair it...help!!

Help...my wireless keyboard has some how come unpaired with my iMac...and since the keyboard does not work I can not log in to repair it.  Anyone know how to fix this??

You can access your Mac from your iPhone or iPad through a remote desktop client like Splashtop or LogMeIn if you already have something like this installed. Are you sure that your keyboard is 'discoverable'? (Hold button until light comes on and then goes off. Release button, then depress agin. The light will come on, hold for for about 3 seconds then let go. The light on the keyboard should be blinking in a 3 flash succession.) If it doesn't connect to the Mac after this, you'll need to get/borrow/buy a USB Keyboard (It's always good to have one of these handy anyway when you have a wireless accessory setup as your main way of connecting with your Mac).
Once you do get in to your system, be sure and go to System Preferences>Bluetooth and make sure that the 'Discoverable' box is checked. Also, go on to the Advanced pane and make sure that the box that says "Open Bluetooth Setup Assistant at startup if no trackpad or mouse is detected" is Checked.

  • Macbook Keyboard Only Types Weird Symbols

Yesterday my macbook all of a sudden started typing only weird symbols. Every key pressed provides these weird symbols. I have searched for answers on how to fix this but none seem to work:
I have plugged in an external keyboard and that works, so it isn't the OS/software, it is the laptops keyboard.
I have cleaned the "alt keys" in case they were sticking.
I have checked my preferences and the US American Flag is selected.
I am completely open to starting from scratch and resetting the entire system but it doesn't appear to be a solution to this problem.
Any help would be appreciated. I can bring it into a apple store but was hoping I could figure it out through here first.
    Thank you.

    Odd!
Has anything been spilled on the computer at any point in time? Are you under warranty?
I missed the bit about the external keyboard working. You may have a hardware issue that needs repair or replacement.
If you computer has a removable battery, save your work, connect the AC adapter then remove the battery. Does the keyboard still act strangely with the keyboard removed?

  • I just purchased an IMac with lion and I tryed to install an old math program that is for winmac running systems. When I try to boot the cd it comes up with a notepad window with a bunch of weird symbols and codes but the program will not start up.

I just purchase my first IMac with lion and I was trying to install a math program I bought 6 years ago. When I went to boot it off the disk while following the program instructions a window popped up with a note pad format with symbols and codes but the program would not download or open. How do I get this program to work? It is a mac compatible program by the way.

Your Mac probably does not know with which application to open the file and is opening a file with a text editor that really needs to be opened by the application itself.  Try starting the application first, then use the File > open command to open the file.
As varjak paw comments, there isn't a "winmac" so that's not telling us anything.
Note that it is possible that software purchased 6 years ago may no longer run on your computer.  Once we know what it is we can help more.

  • I disconnected my Wireless Keyboard from my Mac and I am logged out! Please help?

So, I was trying to test out the Wireless Keyboard for my iPad, so I disconnected it from the computer and logged out. So now I am logged out and I can't even log in without my keyboard! What should I do? I have another keyboard in the house that works via USB, should I use it?

    Hi
I have the same problem. Did you use the USB keyboard and works? Did you log in again?
Youd answer will be very helpful to me!

  • My Aluminum Wireless Keyboard Thinks it's a Mouse!

I'm having troubles with my aluminum wireless keyboard. When I first got it I paired it with my MacPro1,1 and it worked great for a couple of months, then it all of a sudden stopped working (no, I didn't drop it). I went back to using my old white/clear wireless keyboard and that one works perfectly.
I have tried pairing the aluminum keyboard numerous times to no avail. I will explain to you what happens. After deleting the keyboard from bluetooth, I pair it again. The aluminum keyboard appears on the list and I click it to pair it. It asks me to type in a code, which I do (from the aluminum board, not the white one). I hit return and wait a few seconds and it tells me pairing was successful.
When I go to use the newly paired keyboard, it will not type. What I DO get is mouse curser movement from various keys. Holding down the letter "O" moves the curser to the right, "U" moves it left, "8" moves it up, and so-forth.
I took the keyboard in to the Apple store to get an exchange. They tested it and showed me how it works perfectly on their computers. They suggested I update my OS to the latest version along with all related firmware and try it again. So, I just installed snow leopard 10.6.1, and tried repeatedly to pair the keyboard again to no avail. It is still doing the exact same thing! I am running the latest wireless keyboard firmware, it has new batteries, I removed and replaced the batteries several times and it just does not help. I am stumped!
I love my aluminum keyboard and desperately want to use it. Any ideas on how I might correct this problem? Thanks for your time!

    Hiya opalmic,
have you tried a PRAM reset: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1379
and secondly, do you need to install a bluetooth firmware update 2.0.1? :
    http://www.apple.com/support/bluetooth/
finally, you could open up keychain first aid and repair it.
Please advise if that resolves your problems?

  • Wireless Keyboard is not working and I cannot boot to MAC using Boot Camp

    Hi,
I cannot get my wireless keyboard to connect to the Mac anymore. I have a 17" iMac that is running Boot Camp. since the Mac keyboard is not working I am using a PC USB keyboard (which does not have an "option" key) without the Option key I cannot enter Mac mode, so I only get the default boot to XP... HELP!!! Is there any other way to get into Mac mode without using the option key on the keyboard? Or is there another key on the PC keyboard that maps to Option?
    Thanks

I wrote up my travails getting the wireless keyboard working, maybe it will help: http://industriousone.com/apple-wireless-keyboard-vs-windows-xp. Otherwise, you can boot into OSX by clicking on the Boot Camp icon in the system tray (looks like a gray diamond) and choose "Reboot in OS X mode" (or something like that, working from memory). In OS X, you can reboot into Boot Camp by going to System Preferences > Startup Disk and choosing Windows. Hope that helps!

  • Wireless Keyboard (original apple KB) and current bluetooth pairing

I have an Apple original wireless keyboard and when I try and pair it with a MacBook Pro with Bluetooth software update 2.3.3-f8 the MBP can see the keyboard but can not pair with it. I know the Keyboard is old but is there a way to get it to work with my current MBP running OS 10.6.4. For what its worth, the wireless mouse of the same vintage does work.

Yes you can have multiple Bluetooth devices connected simultaneously. I believe you have have up to 7 BT devices at one time.
Also you may find http://www.apple.com/support/bluetooth/ helpful.

  • Wireless keyboard for Palm TX and Adobe reader update?

I am considering purchasing a wireless keyboard for a Palm TX. Will the 3169WW work? If purchased new, what driver will it come with ( what driver do I need?). How universal is this keyboard? I have Adobe Reader 3.05 on the TX. Should I be looking for a newer version. Thank You!
    Post relates to: Palm TX

I just deployed a "new (!) TX and the Palm Bluetooth Keyboard, after years of using the Tungsten T3.  For the most part I'm happy with both.  There's just a little downside to the keyboard, that is, the lack of a key combination to duplicate the Graffiti stroke that involkes shortcuts (these are the mostly custom texts that you set up in Prefs to insert by making the stroke followed by just one or two or three characters).  On the Ultrathin Keyboard, which I used with the T3, the fn-ctrl combination made the shortcut stroke on the screen, after which I could type (for example) "dts," which would insert a date and time stamp.  I think the Palm infrared wireless keyboard does the same thing.  If there is such a functionality on the BT keyboard, it's not documented and I cannot find it.  (I suspect that it may have been left out because it may be mostly used with smartphones, Treo series etc., which have the hardware keyboards and so dispense with Graffiti, but I use the Graffiti shortcuts a lot, so this omission makes me a somewhat unhappy camper.  If anyone has discovered a way to invoke this function on the BT keyboard, I would be very interested.)

  • Connecting remotely with Apple wireless keyboard, ARD 3.5, and Lion

I don't know if the keyboard issue is related but here is my problem:
    1. I have used Vine Server with .NET VNC viewer for years and iTeleport for close to a year to remote to my iMac. Vine Server stopped working after I upgraded to Lion so I bought Apple Remote Desktop 3.5 and installed it.
    2. I can connect once, but after I disconnect, I can no longer connect using iTeleport; instead, it tries for a long time then gives a timeout error. After I restart the Mac then I can reconnect, but only if I restart from the login screen or the Apple menu; if I use either "sudo reboot", or "sudo shutdown -r now", then I still cannot reconnect. I cannot test this behavior using .NET VNC viewer because it is a 30 minute drive away.
    3. When I try to connect using .NET VNC, I get an error that the server is not a VNC server; however, I have never managed to attempt to connect at a time when I could connect using iTeleport.
    4. When I connect using iTeleport where I can see my Mac, the Mac dispays the message that it cannot find a bluetooth keyboard. This message does not appear on my iPad screen, but it does display on the Mac's monitor any time I attempt to connect using iTeleport whether or not the connection is successful.
    5. The behavior is the same whether I connect through the local wifi or over the internet.
    6. I have never been able to connect using the iTeleport connect utility that comes with iTeleport.
Right now, I would be happy if there were a special restart command that I could execute over ssh that does the same thing as clicking the restart button on the Mac. Does anybody have an Idea how I can get this working again? Driving home to reboot every time I need to remote in is not an option.

Thanks for the quick reply Skydiver! So...I really should buy a second wireless keyboard so that I don't have to go through the hassle of re-pairing the keyboard when i switch devices, yes? Yes, I believe I've answered my own question as I now sit here with my MBP attempting to pair it to the keyboard. Oy. Taking forever. I don't mind buying a second -- for $69, it seems to be the most efficient thing to do. Now I just need to figure out a way to designate which wireless keyboard goes with which device. Time to buy a little sticker! Thanks again.
