Help! iMac doesn't start, alarming audio signals, no hard drive...any hope?

I have a 17" G5 iMac, the iSight model. Bought it pretty much exactly two years ago, when they were first released.
Problem history:
About a year ago (just too late to get Applecare) the superdrive started acting funky, wouldn't burn double layer and wouldn't read some dvd's. Ended up buying an external LaCie burner, that was cheaper than getting the built-in one replaced.
About half a year ago, one vertical line of pixels died in the LCD. Annoying. But it was pretty far to the right, so I could live with it, as it didn't affect performance.
About a month ago, a second vertical line of pixels died....I still tolerated it, as the computer itself was functional, and I'm pretty cheap.
LAST NIGHT: While browsing in firefox, the system freezes. Spinning beach ball, nothing is responding. I end up shutting it down by holding the power button. Now when I turn it on, it keeps making an annoying signal, sounds like a cheap cell phone ring, with a vibrating sound to it. Over and over. Eventually it gives me a blank screen with a folder icon with a blinking question mark. So I read up in the manual, and it says, "in case of blinking question mark, start up the computer while holding the option key, then click on the hard drive icon, and then click on the continue button". I go ahead and boot with the option key....and no hard drive icon appears! Just a refresh button and a continue button. So I'm stuck.
My interpretation: The computer cannot detect the hard drive, for whatever reason, and therefore cannot boot. Does this sound right?
Is this another one of those "common problems" with iMacs from around that time? Cause I'm just about getting tired of those... I only hope that no matter what happens, my hard drive's contents are not lost. This would be disastrous.

Well, it turns out it is a defect hard drive. The cellphone-like sounds, along with a "vibrating" sound are actually made by the hard drive itself, not the Mac.
Our IT specialist says it's most likely the head scraping on the disk surface. Very bad news, as that would really be reducing any chance of my data still being intact...
We extracted the hard drive (major pain in the *** - thanks for the design, Apple!), and it's going to a data recovery specialist.
Lessons learned so far: Be wary Apple's hardware reliability, ergo GET APPLE CARE, and back up your stuff!!

  • My iMac doesn't start.

My iMac doesn't start.  It chimes after pressing turn-on button, but it stays on the screen of white background, apple logo in the middle with the pointer going round and round and round, but doesn't move to next stage.  Please let me know what to do...

I am having the same problem. I got on last night to the same info and tried all that. None of it worked. My Mac had been running slow for a few weeks, so I restarted it and then it wouldn't power back on. The gray screen just keeps coming on and then it just shuts down.
To doctor; I have sent a request to have apple call me to try to resolve issue. Maybe you should try too. Best of luck.

  • When iMac sleeps... it shuts down external hard drives

When I wake my iMac I get the error message that my hard drives were removed, could cause damage, etc. This just started today. It's almost like the iMac kind of goes into a deeeeeeeep sleep... but the computer doesnt shut down totally. I can still wake it, takes a little longer than usual though.
Anyone know what the issue can be?
    Thanks

Do you have an external drive attached?
The reason for asking is I have seen similar errors when I fail
to properly unmount or removes an external drive.
There may be a better way but when I want to turn off my
external drive (used for TM and SD), I right click on he
external HD's icon and select the EJECT option. This unmount
the drive so the power can be turned OFF and removed
from the back of the iMac. You can also do with the Disk
    Utility.
Try unmounting your external drives and restart to see
    if this helps.

Sure-glad to help you. You will not lose any data by changing synching to MacBook Pro from imac. You have set up Time Machine, right? that's how you'd do your backup, so I was told, and how I do my backup on my mac.  You should be able to set a password for it. Save it.  Your stuff should be saved there. So if you want to make your MacBook Pro your primary computer,  I suppose,  back up your stuff with Time machine, turn off Time machine on the iMac, turn it on on the new MacBook Pro, select the hard drive in your Time Capsule, enter your password, and do a backup from there. It might work, and it might take a while, but it should go. As for clogging the hard drive, I can't say. Depends how much stuff you have, and the hard drive's capacity.  As for moving syncing from your iMac to your macbook pro, should be the same. Your phone uses iTunes to sync and so that data should be in the cloud. You can move your iTunes Library to your new Macbook pro
you should be able to sync your phone on your new MacBook Pro. Don't know if you can move the older backups yet-maybe try someone else, anyways,
This handy article from Apple explains how
How to move your iTunes library to a new computer - Apple Support''
don't forget to de-authorize your iMac if you don't want to play purchased stuff there
and re-authorize your new macBook Pro
time machine is an application, and should be found in the Applications folder. it is built in to OS X, so there is nothing else to buy. double click on it, get it going, choose the Hard drive in your Time capsule/Airport as your backup Time Machine  and go for it.  You should see a circle with an arrow on the top right hand of your screen (the Desktop), next to the bluetooth icon, and just after the wifi and eject key (looks sorta like a clock face). This will do automatic backups  of your stuff.

  • Do you have any ideas why Motion 5 would run slow on a computer? I have an Imac with 8Gigs of ram, and plenty of hard drive space, but it still gives me the beach ball when I add a few lights and effects. I'm at the end of my rope.

You probably don't really need 1080 at 60 for your finished projects but since you're just starting out with Motion, you need to lower your expectations. A long way. 1080 is about 2 million pixels per frame, DV is only about 400,000. That's not just five times as many pixels for the Mac to track; everything in video is exponential.
Explore the training tutorials available by Mark Spencer. You will get an idea of how his super powerful machine reacts with the software.
Adding a light roughly doubles the processing time over flat scenes. Two lights increases processing again. Reflections require processing the lights and then calculating the reflections so add another quarter of the time required for flat scenes. Add camera movement, motion blur, and depth of field and you need exponentially more processing time for every frame. The preload of renders into RAM is one of the cooler features of Motion, as comapred to After Effects, but that takes tons of time, to.
Try working in ye olde DV resolution for a few days. Get to know the software's limitations and what gets imposed by your Macintosh. Step up to 720p/30 and see how things slow down.

You don't need to start up your mac from another computer's hard drive to see it on the desktop of your powerbook.
Startup your iMac in target disk mode and then connect it to your powerbook with a firewire cable and it should mount on the powerbook's desktop.

After getting the apple logo, I get the MacIntosh HD image (with the words MacIntosh HD under it), with an arrow underneath pointing at it. After selecting it , everything run as normal. But once in awhile it ask me to select it again.
i got no boot camp or partition. Just macHD . And i don't have anything pressing on my magic mouse or on my keyboard.
Any idea? or any1 is facing the same issue? Is there anything i should know?

  • Hello, I need help to retrieve deleted information to partition an external hard drive. What should I do?

Hello, I need help to retrieve deleted information to partition an external hard drive. What should I do?

I'm not about the question, and giving you the right answer requires me to ask a few more questions.
Do you want to retrieve deleted information for future usage, or to completely delete a partition? The latter is straightforward: simply erase the partition. The former is more complicated: it's very difficult, even using available commercial software, to recover deleted information. If the data is important, you may want to contact a professional like DriveSavers. It won't be cheap.

    I'd suspect this known issue:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS2377
if you have a late 2007 MBP.
The only testing you can do at home is to attach an external monitor and see if the defects repeat on the external. If so, get to an Apple store. If the computer's video chipset fails a test the Apple Store will perform, you get a free logic board replacement. Turnaround is usually one day to one week--not bad at all.
If the defects do NOT repeat on an external monitor, then the problem is not covered by the above Repair Extension Program
The issue is heat-triggered. Be certain that you control heat once you get it fixed. Don't use the computer in your lap without a lapboard; don't block the vents under the display hinge; don't us in clamshell mode, etc.

  • HT1533 Help my iMac doesn't start from the white screen and apple and whirring gear icon.

Help!  My IMac doesn't boot up ...just a white screen, apple and whirring gear. I tried turning it off and on and then turning it on while holding down the shift key but nothing.

Could be a HD failure. Gina please do 2 things, first is when you post it's imperative for us to know some things about your system so we can diagnose properly. We need to know what iMac you have, some basics about how it's configured and how much RAM is installed and most importantly the version of OS X installed. Without those basics it's very difficult.  To get you started though, please carefully read and methodically follow Apple's instructions in Gray screen appears during startup

  • Used Boot Camp, iMac doesn't start

    Hello everyone!
I have got a iMac Core 2 Duo. I tried to install Windows XP with Boot Camp yesterday. When I went threw the installation steps, it asked me how much space I would like to put on the Windows partition. I left it as it was, 32gb. When I put in my Win XP disc, the computer restarted itself and started to install something (blue screen, white text at the down side). When I later would choose a partition to install Windows, there only was 1 partition, the Macintosh-one. I couldn't install on it, because it told me that the partition is damaged or has another file format. I pushed F3 and quit the windows-installation. When my computer restarted, there was only a white screen and nothing happend, OSX didnt load!
I have tried putting in the OSX install disc and restarting computer, nothing happened, still just a white monitor!! I cant do anything, even move the mouse! What should I do? Please help!

    Welcome to the Apple Discussions.
Not to be bearer of bad news, but you may need to contact Apple on this one. Some folks have reported this similar experience and needed a new hard drive.
Just an idea for you. There is an entire Apple Discussion forum dedicated to Boot Camp and Windows XP & Vista.
Whereas, not everyone here with an Intel iMac has installed, tried to install or has experience with BC & XP & Vista, everyone there has or at least has an interest. You may attract help more quickly there.
The Forum is at the bottom of the main Apple Discussions page under Windows Compatible Technology.
    Here is a link;
    Forum: Boot Camp Public Beta
If there is a way out of this that you can accomplish at home those folks will be able to assist you with the information. Try searching that forum for folks with the same/similar issue.
    Good luck!

  • Can anyone help me with this- recording at audio signal in the upper frequency region of the audio s

Using Audition, how would I go about recording an audio signal (voice) at
14,500Hz? I know this would be outside the frequency range for the human ear to hear, but that is the point of my question. Any help would be very much appreciated
    Thanks!!!!

You are thinking about it absolutely the wrong way if you think you can "convert" a voice file to be only 14.5kHz. You need to think of a control frequency (14.5kHz) being modulated by the voice line you record. You can't just change the pitch of the voice file or use the FFT filter to eliminate everything under 14.5kHz. It won't work that way.
Try it yourself. Record a voice line. Use Pitch Shifter or pitch strech to change the pitch on the voice. Crank it up all the way to highest possible pitch. Listen to it. Painful isn't it? Could you understand anything? Thought not. Then go to the FFT filter. Reset so it's flat. Add a break point (click on the line) at 14.5kHz. Then click and drag the line below 14.5kHz and bring it to zero. Listen to it. You get the occasional movment if you watch the Frequency Analysis window, but certainly nothing audible to my burned out ears.
The direction I would look at is using the Vocoder effect in MT. insert your voice line into the MT window. In EV, create a new file using Generate Tones at 14.5kHz of the length you need. Insert the tone file into MT ABOVE the voice file. Select and highlight them both. Still in MT, go to Effects>Vocoder. Make your Control Wave the voice file and your Process Wave the tone file. Hit OK. A new file (that looks blank) will be created. Play it in EV with the Frequency Analysis window open and you will see activity at 14.5kHz. This is amplitude modulation (AM). Will it result in anything subliminal? I doubt it, but it would depend on how much you belive subliminal messaging works.
Didn't an earlier version of Audition have some subliminal effect? Could it have been as far back as CEP 1.2?
