Help iMac hangs

Dear friends,
Upon startup, there are vertical yellow lines during the apple logo screen, once the loading (spinning bar) is done, the next screen is a white screen with yellow spots all over with my mouse (able to move around) but that's it, stucked.
I managed to get into disk utility mode upon startup, just changed my hdd a few months ago during the recall. During this screen, there are currently purple spots all over. Did a repair disk but it says that HD appears to be fine.
Pls help!

Hi there,
Thanks for your advise. I'm not really familar with the different models of the cards but would love to try my hands at replacing it myself. Would you be able to point me in the direction of which card to purchase for the replacement? It'd be good if there's a chance of purchasing a card 1 step up from my damaged one since i'm already replacing it.
Thank you so much!

  • IMac hanging caused by Safari (I think)

Have been having problems with my iMac hanging which I think is caused by Safari.
Safari (5.1.7 )will be working OK and then hang with the spinning wheel. Am then unable to quit and finder hangs in turn and I end up doing a restart with the power button.
Have 1 external hard drive attached which is partitioned for Time Machine backup and iTunes library.
In attemt to address problem I have previously erased my iMac and reinstalled all software (from new rather than from Time Machine backup) and then reinstalled user files (but not application library files in case any of these were corrupted.
Problem is common to all users.

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a test, not a solution. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
    Step 1
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is localized to your user account.
Enable guest logins* and log in as Guest. For instructions, launch the System Preferences application, select Help from the menu bar, and enter “Set up a guest account” (without the quotes) in the search box. Don't use the Safari-only Guest login created by Find My Mac.
While logged in as Guest, you won’t have access to any of your personal files or settings. Applications will behave as if you were running them for the first time. Don’t be alarmed by this; it’s normal. If you need any passwords or other personal data in order to complete the test, memorize, print, or write them down before you begin.
Test while logged in as Guest. Same problem(s)?
After testing, log out of the guest account and, in your own account, disable it if you wish. Any files you created in the guest account will be deleted automatically when you log out of it.
*Note: If you’ve activated “Find My Mac” or FileVault in Mac OS X 10.7 or later, then you can’t enable the Guest account. The Guest login created by “Find My Mac” is not the same. Create a new account in which to test, and delete it, including its home folder, after testing.
    Step 2
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party system modifications that load automatically at startup or login.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Boot in safe mode* and log in to the account with the problem. The instructions provided by Apple are as follows:
Be sure your Mac is shut down.
    Press the power button.
Immediately after you hear the startup tone, hold the Shift key. The Shift key should be held as soon as possible after the startup tone, but not before the tone.
Release the Shift key when you see the gray Apple icon and the progress indicator (looks like a spinning gear).
Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including wireless networking on certain Macs.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
*Note: If FileVault is enabled under Mac OS X 10.7 or later, or if a firmware password is set, you can’t boot in safe mode.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem(s)?
After testing, reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of steps 1 and 2.

  • Please Help :( iMac 20" refuses to boot up with anymore than 1gb ram?

Please Help iMac 20" refuses to boot up with anymore than 1gb ram?  It was fine 4 days ago and had been working with a 1gb stick in one slot and a 2gb stick, which had replaced the orignal 1gb stick that I got it with, in the other and it had shown 3gb of ram and was working just fine with that since November?  It went to sleep briefly 4 days ago while I was waiting on a customer and I came back to try to wake it up and it never would forcing me to hard boot it.  When I did that it would only go to a black screen with a solid white light on the power indicator.  Over and over again and same thing.  I read and tried every suggestion I could possibly find in this and a few other mac forums to no avail.
I finally after reading about RAM issues etc.  I decided to power off and take out the ram sticks and try them one at a time in each slot.  So I took out the 2gb stick and did the SMC reset and it would boot up and work just fine with the 1 gb of ram.  So then I went through the same process with the 2gb stick and it would not boot up only go to a black screen with white solid light again (NOT flashing).  So then I tried the other original 1gb I had replaced with the 2gb and it worked just find like the other 1gb.  So then I tried just 1gb stick in the other ram slot (back facing one) and with just the 1gb strip it booted up and worked fine.  Tried it with the other 1gb stick and once again that one too worked just fine.  So I determined it wasn't the slot itself I thought?  I then tried the 2gb in the back slot and it would not boot only go to the black screen white solid light deal like before.  So I thought well ok it's obviously the 2gb ram must have somehow went bad (even though I have only had it since November) and I thought well I will just use the (2) 1gb sticks in each slot and then that will at least give me 2gb because only 1gb really ***** LOL.  So I proceeded to go through the same shut down process installed both sticks (I always push them to I feel them click and my fingers have a nice indention on them) reset the SMC and turned the power one and.... It would only go to the black screen with white solid light on power indicator????  I went through the same above process at least 3 times and again today a few times and I can't figure it out and I tried to search and search and I couldn't find anything like what I am experiencing.....What happened?  Please help this slow Imac is killing me.  It will work with 1gb ram only nothing more?  Here are the specifics of my Imac.
It is a 20" Late 2006 Intel Core 2 Duo 2.16 ATI Radeon X1600 256 MB graphics card and Ram with now only 1gb (did have 3gb) and I am running OSX Lion 10.7.5
When I go to system report and go under memory it shows this:

Any help I can get would really be appreciated.  Thanks in advance

I have some more if needed???????????????

  • HT1148 Installed Mountain Lion - Now my IMAC hangs in a short loop (1 sec) at least once every other day.

Updated my IMAC from Lion to Mountain Lion. Processor 2.93GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, 4 Mag 1067 MHz DDR3. Now (usually when I am running two software items) my IMAC hangs up about once a day or so. It seems like a short 1 sec repeat. At that point the only way to stop it is to shut down using the main power button. Is anyone else having this problem? I never had a problem until I upgraded. I'm 99% sure it must be in the operating system. Can anyone tell me what's going on? Has Apple found this glitch in Mountain Lion and will they be coming out with a fix?

I was having a similar issue, my 27" iMac would lose the Internet connection, but not the wifi, later I'd find that the machine had restarted giving me a notice that there'd been a kernel panic. It was happening persistently after upgrading to Mountain Lion.
I used CCleaner to clear caches and now two days later I've had no problems.
I'm relieved that I didn't have to resort to more complex solutions.

  • My imac hangs up after upgrading to new os

After upgrading to new OS my imac hangs up where it never has done this before. My apple care has long sinse expired and I am really bummed. It was clearly related to the new OS. Any suggestions for relief?

    If 10.7.0 or later...
Bootup holding CMD+r, or the Option/alt key to boot from the Restore partitirion & use Disk Utility from there to Repair the Disk.

  • My iMac hangs when installing Yosemite.

My iMac hangs when "installing on HD about 22 mins remaining" I did not check to see if this iMac can support Yosemite. What do I do now?

You can try using the full offline Reader installer from

  • IMac hangs on spinning color wheel when coming out of screen saver

Since updating to the latest version 10.5.5 my iMac hangs when coming out of screen saver mode with the spinning color wheel and I have to do a hard reboot.
I did some searching and it looks like this was also a problem back with and earlier version of 10.5
I use the pictures screen saver.
Anyone else have this problem since the last update??

I was so spoiled from not having to do anything with my iMac but enjoy it that it never occurred to me a little maintenance would be required.
Still compared to the Windows PC's I have around that I have to try and maintain once a day I think the Mac is a killer machine....
You should attend to your iMac. Even the best machines need periodic attention.
Like an iceberg, most of Leopard is "under the ocean" or as we say, "under the hood." There is an extremely powerful BSD OS down there and it is really that, not Leopard per se, that need an occasional "tweak."
Actually there are automatic routines that do much of the hidden maintenance but permissions repair is not one of them.
Again, you do not need to run permissions repair every day. Not even every month, but it's best to do it anytime you install new software - before and after installing the software.
Some, but not all of the issues you see here are the result of not maintaining the computer.

  • IMac hangs several times a day

I have problems with my imac (late 2012). The iMac hangs several times a day. The messages (console) are different.

    Does anyone know a reason?

Back up all data immediately as your boot drive may be failing.
If you have more than one user account, these instructions must be carried out as an administrator.
Triple-click anywhere in the line below on this page to select it:
syslog -k Sender kernel -k Message CReq 'Channel t|GPU D|I/O|Previo' | tail | open -ef
Copy the selected text to the Clipboard (command-C).
Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Paste into the Terminal window (command-V).
The command may take a noticeable amount of time to run. Wait for a new line ending in a dollar sign (“$”) to appear.
A TextEdit window will open with the output of the command. If the command produced no output, the window will be empty. Post the contents of the TextEdit window (not the Terminal window), if any — the text, please, not a screenshot. The title of the window doesn't matter, and you don't need to post that.

  • IMac hangs (sometimes) on wake up

    Hello everyone
Over the last month or so, my iMac has sometimes started hanging on wake up.  The mouse still moves and I can click on icons to open programmes but they just bounce and never open.  I can force them to shut down and I can close any programmes I had left open.  It will not go on the wireless network when this happens nor will it let me turn wireless off and on.  I have to do a hard shut down to make it work again.  Normal shut down just results in it sitting doing nothing.
I copied the system log from this morning's hang up.  I have had my computer for over a year now but some of the inner workings of Macs are still very strange to me (I was a PC user before) so please be patient and do not assume that I will understand a reply.
    Thank you for your help!
PS I have removed my name from some of the log entries so if a gmail bit looks funny, that's why.

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a diagnostic test. It won’t solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
Third-party system modifications are a common cause of usability problems. By a “system modification,” I mean software that affects the operation of other software — potentially for the worse. The following procedure will help identify which such modifications you've installed. Don’t be alarmed by the complexity of these instructions — they’re easy to carry out and won’t change anything on your Mac.
These steps are to be taken while booted in “normal” mode, not in safe mode. If you’re now running in safe mode, reboot as usual before continuing.
Below are instructions to enter some UNIX shell commands. The commands are harmless, but they must be entered exactly as given in order to work. If you have doubts about the safety of the procedure suggested here, search this site for other discussions in which it’s been followed without any report of ill effects.
Some of the commands will line-wrap or scroll in your browser, but each one is really just a single line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, and you can then copy it. The headings “Step 1” and so on are not part of the commands.
Note: If you have more than one user account, Step 2 must be taken as an administrator. Ordinarily that would be the user created automatically when you booted the system for the first time. The other steps should be taken as the user who has the problem, if different. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this paragraph doesn’t apply.
When you launch Terminal, a text window will open with a line already in it, ending either in a dollar sign (“$”) or a percent sign (“%”). If you get the percent sign, enter “sh” and press return. You should then get a new line ending in a dollar sign.
    Step 1
Triple-click the line of text below on this page to select it:
    kextstat -kl | awk '!/com\.apple/{printf "%s %s\n", $6, $7}' | open -f -a TextEdit
Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Then click anywhere in the Terminal window and paste (command-V). A TextEdit window will open with the output of the command. If the command produced no output, the window will be empty. Post the contents of the TextEdit window (not the Terminal window), if any — the text, please, not a screenshot. You can then close the TextEdit window. The title of the window doesn't matter, and you don't need to post that. No typing is involved in this step.
    Step 2
    Repeat with this line:
    { sudo launchctl list | sed 1d | awk '!/0x|com\.(apple|openssh|vix)|org\.(amav|apac|cups|isc|ntp|postf|x)/{print $3}'; sudo defaults read com.apple.loginwindow LoginHook; sudo crontab -l; } 2> /dev/null | open -f -a TextEdit
This time you'll be prompted for your login password, which you do have to type. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. Type it carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. Heed that warning, but don't post it. If you see a message that your username "is not in the sudoers file," then you're not logged in as an administrator.
Note: If you don’t have a login password, you’ll need to set one before taking this step. If that’s not possible, skip to the next step.
    Step 3
    { launchctl list | sed 1d | awk '!/0x|com\.apple|org\.(x|openbsd)/{print $3}'; crontab -l 2> /dev/null; } | open -f -a TextEdit
    Step 4
    ls -1A /e*/{la,mach}* {,/}L*/{Ad,Compon,Ex,Fram,In,Keyb,La,Mail/Bu,P*P,Priv,Qu,Scripti,Servi,Spo,Sta}* L*/Fonts .la* 2> /dev/null | open -f -a TextEdit
Important: If you formerly synchronized with a MobileMe account, your me.com email address may appear in the output of the above command. If so, anonymize it before posting.
    Step 5
osascript -e 'tell application "System Events" to get name of every login item' | open -f -a TextEdit
Remember, steps 1-5 are all copy-and-paste — no typing, except your password. Also remember to post the output.
    You can then quit Terminal.

  • IMac hangs waking up from sleep mode, what can I do?

I have an iMac - early 2008, Inter Core 2 Duo, screenshots of full specs attached below.
I upgraded to Mountain Lion about 3 weeks ago. No problem until 2-3 days ago when the iMac started to 'hang' after waking up from sleep mode.
I'd try to launch Safari but the icon just bounces on the dock.
Force quitting all open apps, force quitting Finder. Still nothing.
Can't shut down unless I hold the power button down.
Then on restart it says something about an application that was previously unresponsive...try to reopen it or wait 50 seconds (or thereabouts) - I choose the latter option.
I've tried to do the usual verify/repair permissions and verify/repair disk. No problem found.
Incidentally, this has only been happening since 'upgrading' to iTunes 11. Coincidence?
    Can someone help?

Ok, I've done everything suggested above except for running the Disk Utility from the recovery partition, as I will have more time to spend on it tomorrow and that's something I'm too scared to try in a rush....!
I've made a screenshot of the energy saving settings changed to your suggestion, could you let me know if that's what you meant?
I really appreciate your help by the way

  • Brand new 27'' i5 iMac hangs for ever at the apple screen

After 10 days of normal usage, by brand new iMac 27'' i5 started to hang during startup (rotating cursor at the apple screen). I found unreparable errors with Disk Utility, erased and re-formatted disk with zeros and reinstalled Mac OS X snow leopard. The iMac worked for a short period but soon after restarting gave the same problem of hanging at startup and unreparable disk errors. Resetting SMC and PRAM made the situation only worse since the Mac OS X startup disk refused to eject or operate (pressing C at startup). My only contact with the iMac (the slow DVD player) was now unreachable, too
I contacted Apple Call Center in Greece and asked them if I could return this faulty iMac (Dead On Arrival, DOA) with a new one, since I don't want any Service Center fiddling with a brand new, expensive but faulty iMac, that could soon give the same or worse problems. They told me that it is not Apple's policy in many countries(??) to replace DOA Apple machines.
I was wondering if this is true in other countries and whether Apple would play with it's own reputation by forcing users to "live" with "faulty in the box" Apple computers.
I'm very sad since I paid 2000 euros and the only thing I got is all this aggrevation!!
Any help or information and similar experiences would be appreciated.

Hi I posted this reply on another topic today re freezing and hanging imac but it seems to have gone missing so I am posting this copy now so you will see what I have done. I have had the same freezing/hang problems. My imac is ok for a few minutes and then freezes. So after a lot of frustration I brought it to an Apple agent on 16th December. He could not find any obvious problem so he rebuilt directories with disk warrior and it worked perfecttly until the 24th December
and it was turned off until the 31st December. When it was restarted again it was back to the same spinning beach ball of death. I tried verify permissions and disk repair which said no obvious hard disk problem. I too sent screen shots to Apple on the 6th Jan but have heard nothing back from their engineers. So I brought my imac back to Apple agent on the 7th Jan and he has told me he has replaced the hard drive because I really think he could not pinpoint the real problem. My data could not be retrieved. The cost to me is 249euro or $303. Not really impressed with Apple or imac as this is the second big problem with this imac in 3 years and this time it is not covered by warranty. My computer equipment is never abused or worked full belt. So frustrating as I have loss 11 days worktime. If all these problems appear to be an Apple problem I think the least they can do is fix them for free

  • Why is iMAC hanging up  and Firefox crashing?

iMAC is hanging up  and Firefox has been crashing every day for 2 weeks
Since 6/2/12, Firefox has been crashing most every day on my iMAC.  Using Firefox help, checked plug-ins and several needed update, so I started wwith Adobe Flash and began having worse problems.  First, it did not seem to download, then the system would "hang" (spinning rainbow) for VERY long time (over 1/2 hour or overnight).  After shutdown and unplug power for 10 minutes, tried to start up and now it takes over 30 minutes with lots of hang time. Finally followed firefox help suggestion to "revert to default".  Not much help and of course favorites bar is gone. Has still crashed at least once since 6/15/12.
Tried using Safari instead of Firefox and performance was HORRID-- very slow and lots of hangups lsting 10 minutes and more.
Via my iPad, I looked at Skype and history showed several entries for "URGENT ONLINE REPAIR" and others starting 6/2/12 (Same date as most recent string of Firefox crashes.  Possibly related??
    Any ideas?

No smoking guns in the panic log that I can see. Does it KP in Safe Boot? Hold shift down at startup chime. Give it much longer than a regular bootup.

Faulty RAM is often a cause. Test the RAM with Memtest.
To test the memory, get memtest and run it in single user mode, where it will test as much memory as possible, more than with the OS loaded.
You can get memtest + directions from the link below. However, ignore running it from Terminal. Instead, boot into SU Mode, Cmd-s at the startup chime. (Best to startup from a full shutdown.)
At the prompt, simply type /usr/bin/memtest all 3 -L (From this link It will be installed in /usr/bin/) Then hit return. This will run three loops of memtest and create a log in Console in Utilties.
If you want to run memtest longer, which may be advisable, since RAM errors can be very elusive, just remove the "all 3" which will give you /usr/bin/memtest -L and hit return. It will keep testing until you quit it.
If you want to quit the test, just hit control-c
When finished, you can just type in "reboot" and hit return.

  • My imac hangs during starup after installing update

I installed the new update for OSX lion this morning and after installation the mac rebooted and it hangs on the gray apple screen.

The system was working fine before the update.
I got severals errors with the restore disk permissions the first time I ran it. The second time it didn't return any errors. The disk utility din't return any errros.
After booting in safe mode and hhaving the system hang again I ran the repair disk permission utility again and keep getting the same errors that are being repaired even after running it 5 times is a row.
The Imac is 3 months old and came with Snow Lzapord installed whitch I upgraded to Lion after startup thru the up-to-date program Apple offered.
Thanks for all the help seeing this is my first Mac

  • Aluminum iMac hang...of a sort

OK, so I was in the middle of a double pass (turbo 1st pss) encode in HandBrake, running iTunes and Safari with a dial-up connection (stupidly) in the background when there was some kind of graphical hang. It's hard to describe as I'm a new mac user for 2 weeks. But as I hovered over items in the dock it showed the program name in a black box, when i hovered over the min & max app buttons it showed the relevant icons but if I clicked anything nothing happened. I managed to cut off the connection by pulling out the USB modem. Tried to force quit, eventually with the right butons but couldn't move the dialog box. Couldn't turn off the mac by pressing the back button, and eventually turned it off at the mains. When I turned it on again, the login box appearred but I couldn't click any users.
    Any ideas?

Still haven't gotten past the log in screen. Woke it from sleep and clicked on a user account, got the spinning ball and one of the accounts highlighted and slowly made the animated transition it usually does, but got stuck. When i hover over accounts it still shows information such as short names but still cant click. Restarted but still no luck. Could it be a RAM problem?, I moved the iMac today but only a few inches!?
    Any help appreciated.

  • Desperated from the iMac hang&freeze due to overheated Nvidia Card

This mid-2009 iMac is really killing me... It hangs and freezes and stopped working quite often. Only I install the Windows and using FanControl program, I found out the Nvidia temperature is constantly at 65-66 Celsius, which clearly a cause for this.
Is there anyway to fix this? MacfanControl is not compatible fully with OSX 10.6
Thanks from bottom of my heart to anyone offered a fix!!!

Still no idea ? I figured out that iwlist cannot scan anything [edit: well, not everytime…] (while the network is working):
    $ iwlist wlan0 scan
wlan0 Failed to read scan data : Resource temporarily unavailable
And maybe this might help some guru :
    $ iwpriv wlan0
    wlan0 Available private ioctls :
    ndis_reset (8BF0) : set 0 & get 0
    power_profile (8BF1) : set 1 int & get 0
    deauthenticate (8BF3) : set 0 & get 0
    network_type (8BF2) : set 1 char & get 0
    media_stream (8BF4) : set 1 int & get 0
    reload_defaults (8BF7) : set 0 & get 0
I'm really hoping to hear from anybody soon… Thanks.
