Help! iMac hard drive failure No Backups

I bought iMac in 2011 and worked perfectly fine until 4 days ago. The first sign was everything became so slow. Every task took about 2 minutes to finish or the mouse cursor spinning forever. Then I started reboosting the system. The problem remained. The following day, I tried to turn on the iMac. However, within 10 seconds, it shut itself down. I tried reboosting on and off for a few more times. Exactly the same thing happend. I haven't done anything to iMac. I mainly use it for surfing on Internet, listening to itune or using iphotos.
Then I realized, since I bought iMac, I never used time machine or external drive to set up the backup files. I was stupifiied that I never thought about it because I secretely believed that iMac will never have hard drive problem on me. I never even had such problems in all my precious PCs. All my files from my previous PCs are in iMac as well as saved word documents, photos, and videos. It would be the worst thing in my life if I lose all of these files including files that have sentimental values.
I already made appointment with apple store genius bar. But while anxiously waiting for the appointment, I wonder if anyone could tell me a solution to recover all my files in iMac.
Thank you!

This depends entirely on the nature of the failure or if there even has been a disk failure as opposed to a system failure.
You might try reinstalling Snow Leopard:
Reinstall OS X without erasing the drive
1. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your Snow Leopard Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior and/or Tech Tool Pro to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
2. Reinstall Snow Leopard
If the drive is OK then quit DU and return to the installer.  Proceed with reinstalling OS X.  Note that the Snow Leopard installer will not erase your drive or disturb your files.  After installing a fresh copy of OS X the installer will move your Home folder, third-party applications, support items, and network preferences into the newly installed system.
Download and install Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1.
If the above is not possible:
General File Recovery
If you stop using the drive it's possible to recover deleted files that have not been overwritten by using recovery software such as Data Rescue II, File Salvage or TechTool Pro.  Each of the preceding come on bootable CDs to enable usage without risk of writing more data to the hard drive.  Two free alternatives are Disk Drill and TestDisk.  Look for them and demos at MacUpdate or CNET Downloads.
The longer the hard drive remains in use and data are written to it, the greater the risk your deleted files will be overwritten.
Also visit The XLab FAQs and read the FAQ on Data Recovery.
If the above is not possible, then you would need to send the drive to a disk recovery service such as Data Recovery by DriveSavers | All Drives, RAID, SSD & iPhones. These services are very expensive and provide no guarantee of success.

    BACKUP BACKUP BACKUP Right?!
I was listening in on the Typical Mac User Live Podcast. Very strange that after I left the chat, I worked a bit on graphics and product images for my CafePress shop. Then all of a sudden my Mac G5 PPC starts acting very slow. After every thing I did I got the beach ball and it would take a considerable amount of time before it caught up. I force shut down a couple times. Then I zapped PRAM (no change). Keep in mind that I have not had any problems like this with my G5. I DID replace the SuperDrive early on. I bought a second internal from Apple. Thank God I recently purchased a couple external Hard Drives for backup.
I rebooted holding down the ALT key. I chose my backup hard drive to boot up. Then I tried using disk utilities to repair the main disk. It failed 3 times per Disk Utility. I am currently running Tech Tool Deluxe (8-5-07 11:05 CST). It has found 4 errors so far. Here is the Disk Utility Log:

So now, I assume I need a new hard drive. I have 2 LaCie externals. 1 is Firewire and 1 is USB. I have a second internal Maxtor HD. I use my second internal to store work, iPhoto Lib, iTunes Lib and movies, etc. The two externals are just backups.
I am currenlty running on my backup ext. HD. Any suggestions or help would be GREATLY appreciated.

You can always cut and edit a log and just give a summary or snapshot.
Lots of threads on suggestions for new and replacement drives.
I would focus on 500GB and either Hitachi or WD.
At some point I would add external SATA as well (PCI-X plus a dual drive at the least).
    Zeroing drives is always handy.
I think Disk Warrior does the best job with problems such as yours.
Or upgrade to TechTool Pro 4.5.3.
Intech Speedtools can map out bad blocks without a destructive format and zero-all.
And always have two backups, and an emergency boot drive. Sometimes it is helpful to keep a month old set or the last OS revision (10.4.9 etc).

  • Help! hard drive failure and data recovery

I am a happy PC-traitor who has been using my Macbook successfully for over a year now. I love the Mac.
    Until now.
Last night, while downloading torrents onto my computer, it froze. I restarted. A blinking folder with a question mark was displayed. I tried resetting the PRAM. Disk Utility does not see my hard drive, so I cannot attempt to repair it.
In short, I think it's dead.
Disk recovery is so incredibly expensive! Can I stick the hard drive into an external housing and access the data via Firewire? Can I freeze it overnight? I'm desperate! I can't afford a data recovery service. Help!

If she's dead, she's dead. Could be a loose cable. If you boot from a DVD and DU can;t see the HD, that's usually a really bad sign.
If you are comfortable removing it, you can try something like
    http://eshop.macsales.com/item/Newer%20Technology/U2NV2SPATA/
which will allow you to mount just about any HD via USB.
    You can try stuff like
    http://www.macintosh-data-recovery.com/download-mac-data-recovery.php
    http://subrosasoft.com/OSXSoftware/index.php?mainpage=product_info&productsid=1
    http://prosofteng.com/products/data_rescue.php
And then there's DiskWarrior and TechTool.
Some of these may see HD's that won't mount and allow you to recover data.
Others may chime in with more detailed experiences.

  • IMac hard drive failure query

Hello, my IMac harddrive has failed (bought in 2008). I have managed to copy my photos, music, documents etc onto an external HD (using Linux as my Mac boot disks were not having any effect).
My question is, can anyone tell me what other info I should copy before reformatting and wiping the hard drive? Eg would I need to copy over Itunes settings, photshop shortcuts etc? and how would I do this?
I was only running Leopard so I guess nothing is in the cloud.
    Any advice gratefully appreciated..
    Thanks!

    Ignore. I misread 2008 as 2009.
See HD replacement program. Do note that the program goes to at least 12 APR 13,

  • IMac Hard Drive failure

Okay, so....last night my 27" iMac completely locked up as I tried to open Safari. It wouldn't accept any commands and I ended up powering it down via the power button on the back of the computer. I waited a few minutes and powered it back up and it stayed on the grey Apple screen with the gear grinding away for a good 10 minutes or more before allowing me to log in. I get in and attempt to open my mail and it hangs again so I power it down and restart again. This time, on the grey screen I get a status bar that never gets beyond 10% and never goes away. I shut down again and reset the PRAM....same thing, only now the status bar will go away after awhile (never gets more full than 10%) but I can never get beyond the grey screen. My next step was to dust off my OS X disk and boot from there (needed to use a wired keyboard as the wireless wouldn't connect, which I assume was because of the PRAM reset). When I first used the disk utility I Verified the disk and got back an "invalid node structure" error and then proceed to repair the disk. Took all of about 2 minutes before I got the message, "Disk Utility can't repair this Disk. Back up as many of your files as possible, reformat the disk, and restore your backed-up files."
Not willing to admit defeat I tried again, this time with a different error message, "Invalid Key Length" with the same ending....cannot repair. What are my options? I, of course, have not backed up in recent memory (re: EVER) so is all my info lost? Can I use my macbook pro to try and pull info off the iMac's HDD? I can't get the iMac to boot up past the disk utility. Will a reformat even fix my problem or am I going to need a new HDD?
Any advice or information will be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Is there anyway to tell if this is a physical problem with the HDD or just a logic problem that a reformat will fix?
It is a physical problem with the drive, or with your Mac. If the SMART status shown in Disk Utility is anything other than "Verified," then it's certainly the drive. If the status is "Verified," it may still be the drive that's at fault, but you can't rule out a logic board fault.
You need to understand something about Disk Warrior. It's often touted in these forums as a maintenance tool, which it is not. It's a recovery tool with only one legitimate use: to recover data from a damaged HFS volume that Disk Utility can't repair, and for which there are no backups, or inadequate backups. That seems to be the situation you're in. Disk Warrior may enable you to recover some or all of the data from your drive, but if so, that doesn't mean everything is fine. You must still replace the drive, unless of course it turns out that your logic board is defective, but that's much less likely.
Once you've used Disk Warrior to recover your data, you should never need it again, because you're never going to get caught without a backup again.
There is not a shred of independent evidence that Disk Warrior's "defragmentation" of volume directories has any effect on performance. Apparently the vendor used to make that claim, but has abandoned it as the nonsense it was. In any case, you can get exactly the same effect by erasing the volume and restoring it from backup, probably in less time, and without spending $100.

  • Can i use a external thunderbolt harddrive to copy my imac hard drive.

how fast would a thunderbolt external hard drive be, if i were to copy my Imac hard drive as a backup or image. At the moment its taking 4 hours to copy 95gig using my USB external hard drive......Seems like forever!!!!!

    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1948?viewlocale=en_US&locale=en_US
Visit that link. It seems you should be able to but you would have to format the drive and install the operating system to it.
On the iMac, start it up and immeditely hold down Command + R.  From there you can open disk utility and format it.

  • Hard Drive failure - various boot modes won't work, HELP!

    Hello all,
First of all, sorry for the essay, but I didn't want to miss out on possible crucial details that could help!
A couple of weeks ago, my beloved 27" iMac had a hard drive failure. It won't boot, but instead goes to the grey 'no entry' sign when booting up. I tried holding Cmd + V on boot and this message repeated itself whilst failing to boot:
    "rooting via boot-uuid from chosen/: D94DA2D5-DB38-3517-B05D-70A97AC6EE5B
    Waiting on <dict ID="0"><key><IOProviderClass</key><string ID="1"> IOResorces</string><key>IOResourceMach</key><string ID= "2">boot-uuid-media</string></dict>
    Got boot device = IOService:/AppleACPlatformExpert/PCI0@0/AppleACPIPCI/SATA@1F,2/AppleIntel5Serie sAHCI/PRT0@0/IOAHCIDiskDriver/IOAHCBlockStorageDevice/IOBLockStorageDriver/Hitac hi HDS722020ALA330 Media/IOGUIDPartitionScheme
    BSD root: disk0s2, major 14, minor 2
jnl: unknown-dev: open: phys_blksz 4096 does not match journal header size 512, and journal is not empty!
hfs: late jnl init: failed to open/create the journal (retval 0)
cannot mount root, errno = 19"
I'm not sure how much of that is useful, but I thought I'd copy it all down anyway.
I googled error number = 19 and found articles on an invalid b-tree node and corrupt journals, leaving me to believe that because I recently deleted a Windows Vista partition and reformed the overall HD into a 2TB OSX volume, some windows data may have been left over and corrupted the journal?
So it fails to boot normaly, using Cmd V, and using the OSX install disk, as well as failing to boot from the DiskWarrior 4 DVD I purchased from my local Apple Reseller because I'd heard that it's very good at helping with issues such as what I think my HD is having. I tried Disk Utility whilst booting from the install disk, and tried to repair the drive, and each time I tried it said that invalid content was present in the journal but the disk repair had been successful.
Am I right in thinking that my data is on the drive, it's just that OSX won't register the drive's existence because of a corrupted journal? (the little I know of hard drives is shining brightly through at this point, I'm sure!)
I also tried to boot using target mode by connecting my iMac to a MacBook Pro also running Snow Leopard, but, whilst the iMac clearly went into target mode (bouncing firewire icon on screen), my HD never appeared on the desktop of the MacBook Pro, nor in Disk Utility.
Whilst I have AppleCare, I haven't tried taking it to a mac store yet because of two reasons; 1. The last time I did this I had HD failure on my old 2008 MBP and, whilst I told them to keep the data on it, the first thing they did was reformat the disk. Needless to say, it worked, but I lost all my valuable Data! The second reason is that it's bloody heavy, and I don't own a car!
Before people go on about the way I should have backed up my data, I did, and that's gone as well! D:
    System Specs:
    First generation of 27" iMacs
    2.8Ghz Intel i7 quad core
    2TB HD
ATi Radeon HD 4850 512mb VRAM
    8GB DDR3 RAM
OS version: not the very latest snow leopard but the one before.
Thanks in advance, and once again sorry for the essay!
    Westy

I'm not sure about the DW disk. Check that out at Alsoft's website. Apple doesn't provide data recovery services.
Apple has records of your iTunes purchases. However, the licensing for music only permits you to download it once. I'm surprised that you don't have backups.
If you get an external enclosure in which to put the drive then you might try accessing it from the MBP as an external drive. If you have an external drive you could try using recovery software:
Beyond this you would need to send the drive off to a data recovery service which will be extremely expensive.

  • I had a hard drive failure on my iMac.  I can restore my music, tv shows, and apps from the iTunes store.  How do I restore my movies?

We came back from vacation to find our iMac not working.  Turns out I had a hard drive failure due to an invalid node structure?  They could not recover anything.  I can restore our music, apps, and tv shows from iTunes.  Anyone know how to restore the movies we purchased from iTunes?

It has always been very basic to always maintain a backup copy of your computer for just such an occasion.  Use your backup copy to put everything back.
If for some reaosn you have failed to backup, then you can transfer itunes purchases from an ipod.  File>Transfer Purchases

  • Hard Drive Failure on HP DV 6000 Pavilion laptop Windows-XPsp3 OS - Need Data Recovery Help

Hard Drive Failure on HP DV 6000 Pavilion laptop - Need Data Recovery Help
HP Pavilion DV 6108 NR, RG365UA, purchased in late 2006 at Best Buy, with Windows XP, upgraded to Service Pack 3. It has a Fujitsu hard disk, 60 gigabyte, partitioned into C: and a Recovery D:.
Windows tries to boot up, but goes to blue screen with the message: "Unmountable Boot Volume" for one second, then just keeps recycling until I force a shutdown.
BIOS Phoenix, hard drive test result: " #1-08 Fail "
I ran a disk analysis/recovery program on the Cdrive and it seemed to show the directory structure intact, and it was able to recover some files. I was using the free one from Seagate (which only recovers small files). The second pass didn't run so well, and during the third run the program said I should not proceed further, and I should contact a professional disk recovery company.
However, the D drive seems to be intact, so, I wonder if the disk is corrupted or just some aspect of the logical C drive is bad.
How can I get the D: to run the recovery software on it? The recovery disks, made by Best Buy, only proceed to the R / F / Q option screen, and when I press R, I get a blue screen every time.
Tapping the F10 key during startup gets me nowhere. Ditto the F11 key.
I dont care about the hard disk; it is the data (files, docs, images, etc)  that I want.
I contacted HP to order recovery disks but they are no longer available for my computer.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

    Update...
I found a website that offers the following:
    http://www.computersurgeons.com/p-13442-recovery-kit-435422-001-for-hp-model-number-dv6108nr.aspx
Recovery Kit 435422-001 For HP Model Number dv6108nr
    Price: $27.00
Recovery Kit Set (An Entire Image of the Computer hard drive when the computer was new)
But I wonder how useful it would be. Early XP , no doubt. And if my hard disk problem is a mechanical fault, would any recovery disk even work? The disks made by Best Buy when I bought mine new in 2006 don't do anything more than go to the R /F/ Q screen and then goes to a blue screen when I press R (to recover the OS and apps and data files). And, as I wrote, it is the data that I want, not the disk drive.

  • Hard Drive failure on 2006 iMac

So my iMac (model 5.1; EMC 2118; 2.16 GHz) had a hard drive failure (even Disk Warrior couldn't fix it!), but I can't tell if it's just the boot partition/sector that's bad or total failure .  Any easy way of finding out other than getting SATA/USB adaptor thingy?   I've swapped out the bad drive and replaced it with a new one, but there's data on the old drive I'd like to get at if I can.  If the drive is still good I'll just get an external drive case for it and use it that way.

Any easy way of finding out other than getting SATA/USB adaptor thingy?
Not that I know of. This one?

  • Experiencing strange performance issues after a hard drive failure - Help!

I bought my mid-2012 i5 Macbook Pro in December of 2012. I realized when shopping for computers that I wanted an SSD installed, but that it would be a lot cheaper if I bought the SSD and installed it rather than customizing it in the Apple Store. So I bought a nice Samsung 128GB SSD (820 or 840 - can't remember which) and did the installation. I went ahead and installed two 4GB sticks of RAM while I was at it. Everything was just dandy: my boot time was just under 9 seconds, and all of my data-heavy apps booted in no-time at all. Then all **** broke loose.
About two weeks ago, I opened my computer and I got the dreaded "? File Folder" notification with a gray screen. I immediately thought hard drive failure. No matter how many times I tried to boot, the computer just would not talk to the SSD anymore. I used Internet Recovery to get into my Disk Utility, and the entire partition was gone. I assumed the worst but wanted to be sure - I bought a hard drive enclosure and hooked the SSD up to an older Macbook, and lo and behold: it worked perfectly. I was not only able to recover data, but I could write data to the drive. Nothing appeared wrong with the drive when I plugged it into the old Macbook, but my newer Macbook still would not recognize it. Even my fiance's Windows 7 PC recognized the drive as "?" (since it was formatted for Mac, but hey - it recognized that it existed!).
I decided to re-install the original HDD that came with the 2012 Macbook Pro (the one I removed in favor of the SSD). I was able to re-install the OS and I can boot up at will, but everything is different. The performance issues are extremely noticeable. I can't have more than two programs running at one time without the spinning wheel of death appearing. My boot time went from 9 seconds to 2 minutes. I know that SSDs increase performance, so there is some slight performance downgrade to be expected since I am using a mechanical drive now -- but these are not normal issues. Sometimes I can't even type a web address into Safari without the wheel appearing. iTunes, and specifically the App Store, take minutes to open - and I have no media is on iTunes.
Here's the thing: I have tried just about anything to fix this problem that Google can pull up. I've verified the HDD, I've booted into Safe Mode, reset RAM and cache, run benchmarks and other performance tests, entered all sorts of weird language into Command Prompt, and studied Activity Monitor - I can't find a single red flag that would indicate anything being wrong. It appears to be a perfectly functioning, updated computer.
I'm thinking a piece of hardware failed that triggered the error with the SSD. I'm not really sure though since all of my performance tests indicate perfectly functioning hardware. I'm a little afraid to take it to the Apple store because I know they'll tell me it's my fault for opening the computer and replacing the hard drive in the first place.
Any ideas? At this point anything to salvage this computer would be helpful.

    Spin Cycle,
were those other computers which were able to recognize your SSD in its external enclosure also Macs? Do you know if your SSD has its most recent firmware revision installed? (If it doesn’t, its installer can be downloaded from the Samsung SSD firmware page for burning onto a bootable DVD.) I haven’t used the 830 myself, so I don’t know what its reputation is with Macs. I have an 840 PRO in my MacBook Pro, which has been trouble-free for me, but my understanding is that the 840 EVO has had trouble with Macs in its earlier firmware revisions — so I’m wondering if the 830 has a known track record with Macs, good or bad.

  • Please help RE retrieval/transfer of imac hard drive to imac Part 2

Absolutely any assistance would be gratefully appreciated thank you. I am computer illiterate and I need assistance retrieving data from a imac hard drive (rest of computer isn't working) to a newer imac. Previously had received help from the forum and found out I needed an external casing (thank you again to all those that helped), but no shops near me sell them, sales person told me Sata HDD Docking (OTB) would be able to do a similar thing. I really suck with technology, so I humbly ask if any patient persons more intelligent than me could help me with some basic questions to help me retrieve/transfer data. Let me know if I need to give details. Any links to guides or tutorials welcome as well, but I tend to second guess myself and fail at basic terms often, there are probably 6 year olds with better computer skills and knowledge than me, so yeah, pity welcome, help even more so. Oh first question am I still suppose to use Migration Assistent or do I just turn on computer with old HD in dock connected?

Okay, I apologize for throwing you the following curveball - it appears the shop assistent I was talking to may not have been as knowledgeable as I had hoped, because I don't think my imac is compatible with USB 3.0? I tried putting it into the dock but nothing happened - it gave me four options, transfer from another Mac, transfer from a PC, transfer from a Time Machine (and something else) and forth option was not to transfer now.
I attempted to transfer from Mac and Time Machine options, but with both the loading dial spun for 10 mins with each with no change. So I decided to try and set up the computer anyway. The internet set up part came up but at the time I didn't know how to set it up, and now with retrospect I assume I have to set that up before I "register this computer" as no hard drive is showing onmy computer at the moment? Sorry for the sudden and strange switch in problems but now that I have set up the internet - could you or anyone else please tell me how I can register the computer details (or why the hard drive icon is not appearing assuming those things are connected - when I did fill those details out before it told me it couldn't send them now and would have to be done later?)
Sorry for being so clueless - any help appreciated.
I am looking up my imacs specs now to see if it actually can access this dock. (thank you once again)
