Help! imac Intel duo core crashes/ model 6,1/10.4.11 must restart each time

The Imac crashes each time and I must restart it almost every hour! After restart I need to cool the machine otherwise I need to restart more then 5 times
before it starts running again. When I work with pictures there are horizontal stripes on the screen and see some delay in the finder screen. It looks like a video error.
My question is if this is a hardware problem or an OSX system problem? If I want to install Panther should this work in combination with this machine?
Hopefully somebody can help!

If you say cooling helps then that's likely a hardware problem.  Maybe even something as simple as too many dust bunnies inside.  You'd need to ask on the iMac forum on how to clean inside.  Overheating can cause various problems, including video.  I guess it could be software, but do you hear the fans racing?  I don't know about iMacs but other models will automatically turn fans on at high speed to prevent overheating should the software controlling the fans not run.
Panther? On an Intel Mac? No way.   You did mean OSX 10.3 didn't you?  10.6 is Snow Leopard and most people with your machine want to go that direction (or even to Lion 10.7).

  • Sharing hard drive with windows xp on imac intel duo core

    Hi,
I was wondering whether I could give over anymore of the hard disk on my imac intel duo core to Windows xp? If so, how would I go about doing that?
    Thanks in advance

At this point I think that you would need to use Boot Camp to remove the current partition and then make a bigger one and reinstall Windows.
Just an idea for you. There is an entire Apple Discussion forum dedicated to Boot Camp and Windows.
The Forum is at the bottom of the main Apple Discussions page under Windows Compatible Technology.

  • Less than 3 yr old iMac, Intel duo core powering out for no apparent reason

I'm fairly new to Apple and have had no problems with my iMac until recently. I upgraded to Leopard when it came out and it's been smooth sailing until now. Recently, whether I'm doing mail, talking on Skype, working with photos in iPhoto, out of the blue the screen will turn black and the iMac essentially powers down. Pushing the power button does nothing and I have had to unplug the iMac and wait 45 min. to an hour before plugging back in and it powers up right away. I'm looking for ideas as to why this is occurring and it's happening more frequently. I am also looking for ideas on how to get myself powered up more quickly than what I have been doing. Open to any suggestions. Thanks!

iMac powered down again without warning again. Have an appt. Sunday at Genius Bar but any insight before the appt. would be helpful. Here's the logs from today:

  • Migration Assistant From a Cube with 10.4.11 to iMac Intel duo Core

Did not use Mig. Asst. on first start up. Now trying to use it to transfer applications to the new iMac. Using Firewire, iMac does not connect so I choose "Use Network" having previously connected to the Cube and can see it. However as with the Firewire the rotating black radial lines never seem to go off.
I cannot set the Cube's Mig. Asst. to "To another Mac" only "From another Mac"
    Advice would be welcomed.

This is the way I read the initial instructions which asked for the 'old Mac' to be restarted with 'T' pressed.
Having done that, by FW I left the two machines on for about 2 hours plus and the rotation radial lines showed now sign of stopping. When I connect these Macs without Mig. Asst. I can see everything without delay.
According to Mac Help->Migrating->*Using Migration Assistant to transfer files from another Mac*
+On your new computer, open Migration Assistant, located in the Utilities folder in your Applications folder. Read the Introduction screen, and then click Continue.+
+If a dialog appears, type your password, and then click OK.+
+In the Migration Method screen, select “From another Mac,” and then click Continue.+
+Connect a FireWire cable from your new Mac to your older Mac, and then click Continue.+
+Follow the instructions in Migration Assistant to restart your older Mac and select the hard disk and user accounts from which you want to transfer. Then, select whether you want to transfer applications, files and folders, or your Library folder.+
+NOTE: When you first open a transferred application on your new computer, you may need to reenter the application’s serial number or registration code.+
+Select whether you want to use your old network, time zone, and sharing settings, and then click Transfer.+
+When Migration Assistant is finished, click Quit.+

  • Hotmail/intel duo core

Has anyone successfully downloaded the plugin for hotmail in mail on the new intel duo core and managed to get it to work?
v grateful for any advice on how to do this. i have installed the plugin but it doesn't seem to be recognised in the options for account set up.
    thanks
iMAC intel duo core 17"   Mac OS X (10.4.4)

I don't believe the httpmail plugin is Universal yet which means it runs/works for the Mail.app on a PowerPC Mac at the present time only.
An Intel Mac includes Rosetta which is a translation process that runs a PowerPC binary on an Intel-based Macintosh computer—it allows applications to run as nonnative binaries.
For the Intel based Mail.app (which should be Universal), try selecting run as a PowerPC binary (which requires Rosetta) using Get Info for the Mail.app application via the Finder.
This should allow the httpmail plugin to work.

  • Crashing Imac intel duo 2.0. with deep buzzer sound

I've been working on a imac intel duo 2.0 gig (4 gigs ram, 250 hd) and It's been driving me crazy as it crashes between 2 and 5 times a day. I'm doing constant photo shooting and processing from capture pro to photoshop, but the files are all pretty small- like 8-12 megs each, and I have to say that I've used these programs for years and found them to be extremely stable. There is still like more than half of the hard drive available for files, and I try to keep it that way by pulling old files off it to an external drive.
Often the machine will crash while in a finder type function often early in the day, before I've even opened any photo files or apps. Usually it just freezes. Rarely it will have a screen black out, and when that happens, I hear the deep buzzing sound that must signify something- I don't know what.
I've tried running the apple disc utility, and repairing the permissiions from there, but it hasn't really helped. I've disconnected and reconnected the camera, the external hard drive, my Wacom tablet, nothing really helps. Now that I think of it, I haven't replaced the mouse- could that possibly be the cause?
Oh well, any wisdom on this topic would be appreciated, especially what is that loud buzzer trying to tell me.
    Thanks-TD

You are right it's not an available space issue so now I'm beginning to agree with Allan. If you don't know how to run AHT, please click the Hardware Test link. Run it in Extended Mode too, not using Extended Model does not test very thoroughly. If it reports back with no errors run AHT 2-3x in Extended Mode to be sure. This test is time consuming so start it and come back in about 40 - 60 minutes. If it reports errors then you can either Google them or post them here and someone will try to interpret them. However whatever the error is you should write it down and bring the machine in for service at your local Apple Store or AASP.

  • Imac intel 2 core duo running at 117 Fº. Is this healthy?

my imac intel 2 core duo running at 117 Fº. Is this healthy? The fan speeds are ODD: 998 CPU: 1198 HDD: 1199.

What you need to understand is that your processor has two different temperatures. The temperature that escapes when it leaves the processor dye is called the t case. The temperature for each core is called the tcore. If your processor temp were to be a problem one or two things can happen. The system will shut down immediately to protect itself. For quad core temperatures for example, it will shut itself down at some point at 75-80 degrees Celcius. Operating temperature of about 40-60 C when the system is fully stressed is a target temperature.

  • My Apple desktop computer, 2.4 GHz Intel duo core, OS 10.6.8, stopped recognizing the WD My Book connected via firewire. It works fine with the USB port so it's not the drive. Help please.

My Apple desktop computer, 2.4 GHz Intel duo core, OS 10.6.8, stopped recognizing the WD My Book connected via firewire. It works fine with the USB port so it's not the drive. Help please?

It can be the bridge. It could need firmware update. or the FW ports may be an issue. LaCie seemed to invent the phrase/tip 'resetting firewire ports' due to the issues with their drive cases.
You can try an SMC Reset.
So far I have avoided name-brand and tend to see them mentioned. Often with a new OS (though you are on 10.6.8, but when 10.6 came out there was a common complaint and thread of users: FW or USB worked but not the other interface).

  • Final Cut Studio 2 on an Intel Duo Core 2 iMac?

Can FCS 2 efficiently run on an Intel Duo Core 2 iMac? Should I invest in a Mac Pro? Thanks for any advice.

On the contrary. I've been using a 20" iMac since June of 2007 and it has performed very well on a number of projects, including an hour-long documentary, a 1 1/2 hour concert, and multiple smaller projects.
That isn't to say that a Mac Pro isn't better. Often times it's the budget that makes people lean towards an iMac. Keep in mind, 540, that an iMac isn't expandable, and that's the thing to consider. You can't add more ram and you can't install a capture card for working with HD footage.
If none of that matters to you, then the iMac will do just fine.
    jesse.

  • Using Adobe CS2  with mc book pro intel duo core 2,16 .17"

As a designer working on high definition heavy graphic files intended for digital printing, i am about to go for mc book pro 2,16 duo core and 2gb ram.
I need to use CS2 (photoshop, illustrator) and know that it is not a native soft version, so not otimized for this processor. Any how, I just cannot wait CS3 (Adobe says 2007 whenever they are ready !), so I need advise of professional users of such applications on this mc book pro intel duo core 2,16 17".
I heard pretty scary rumours about such a professional use.
PLEASE HELP BEFORE I GO FOR PC/WIN !!!

CS runs beautifully, with really no lag at all. Keep in mind that I haven't gotten to upgrading from 1 GB RAM to 2 yet, since my tablet died and I needed to replace that. I just installed CS2 last week, and there is a lag, and we'll soon see if more memory helps. Everything works fine, no crashes, etc., but there is in my opinion a noticeable difference in loading time, and various other tasks within the apps take longer. Again, CS2 works just fine, but the performance of CS is much better.

  • Intel duo Core and CS2 - does it work?

    Hi guys,
I'm doing really well. I ordered a 17" imac 1.82Ghz Intel Duo Core and I have not as yet received it.
I have alos ordered Aperture (which will work but possibly quite slow) although I have upgraded to 2Gb Ram.
I have also ordered Photoshop CS2 (full version) and I'm confused. Can I install it? Will it work?
If Aperture is slow and Photoshop CS2 doesn't work what can a amateur photographer use. I'm cheesed off because I ordered an expensive machine and software and before I have even received it I'm seeing that it might not be suitable at all.
Can someone give me some "peace of mind" please.
    17" IMAC (1.83Ghz) Intel duo Core / 2GB Ram   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

Although you can use CS2 with an Intel Mac you should be aware of a significant problem which relates to its installation on them since the last Security update. According to Frank, one of the more senior members of the boards , with a good knowledge of this area:
The CS2 installer will fail if you have applied SU 2006-003 prior to the installation of CS2 on an Intel-based Mac. You will be required to reinstall Tiger, otherwise you will be only able to reboot the machine via a Netboot, CD boot or Safeboot. The Finder is completely locked. It is unknown at this time which extension is causing the issue. Adobe has acknowledged the problem.
One workaround that I am aware of has been suggested on MacFixit:
    MacFixIt reader David Warren writes:
"I had the startup freeze like others. For my MacBook Pro the answer was removing the Adobe VersionCueCS2 from /Library/StartupItems.""(from MacFixit - http://www.macfixit.com/article.php?story=2006051507495116 )
To do this, though, you would need to be happy starting up in the non-standard ways suggested by Frank. I wouldn't normally suggest this for a new Mac user. If you plan on going down this path post back and we can tell you how to.
I guess the real answer is that you will need to know whether the security update has already been installed on your new computer. If it has, then you should wait until Adobe have a fix for the problem before you install Photoshop.
If it hasn't, install Photoshop BEFORE you upgrade with the Security Update, and don't re-install it thereafter until the Adobe fix arrives. You should also remove the relevant startup file, just to be on the safe side.
So whoever warned you about installing it was doing you a favour, and a "simple google search", might have got you into quite a lot of strife!

  • Need RAM Installation Instructions for mac mini intel duo core

I just purchased two gig of ram for my intel duo core mac mini and cannot figure out how to install. I was able to get the cover off - but where does the RAM go?
I can't find any instructions on the apple support page for the mac mini.
All of the links in discussion board that I found are for instructions on installing ram on single processor mac mini which uses different type of ram and is installed in diff location.
    Any help greatly appreciated.

I found a video here at owc: http://eshop.macsales.com/tech_center/index.cfm?page=Video/mini/intel/high.html

  • Is there a virtual pc or Windows emulator for iMac intel duo?

    Hi there,
I just got a new iMac intel duo last week and its fantastic. Unfornatuly I need to run a stock market program that only runs on windows...
This is the only program that i need to run on the windows platform.
I was told to get the intel duo as it was the way things were going and that I may have to wait for the software side of things to catch up.
I currently have a workaround that is painfull, but I would like to have it all on the one machine...
Is there a virtual pc version for the iMac intel duo or are there other emulators I could use??
    Desparate..
