Help: iMac logs on automatically to BSD/Darwin commmand line

Hi folks,
I got a wee little problem with my iMac G5 running OS 10.3.9. I left the computer for a while last night to download and install the system updates (ipod updater and the recent Security update). Later my girlfriend went into the room and said something happened with the computer.
There was an error in some part of the download/install process. I remember that it said some like "does not have permission to write to something something /tmp someing. Vague, I know. I think we had to hit OK to the error window and the computer restarted. I left the room thinking everything would be fine but then the girlfriend says the mac started up with a black screen and white text. Sure enough, I came back and there was the command line login screen for BSD/Darwin.
I don't no much about the unix side of things so I logged on to the command line and looked for a command to enter into the GUI. No luck. I logged off and the screen when to the Aqua Blue back and the litttle waiting animation. Then it went to just blue and then it went to the black unix login again.
I did a restart and the mac starts up normally: gray apply screen, aqua blue screen, status bar fills up.... but instead of going to the window that shows what users you would like to log in as the screen goes blue and up comes the black unix login screen. Another time I restarted... I got a folder with a question mark (?) but eventually the unix screen came up again. The question mark thing only happened once.
I restarted with the system disc and repaired permissions (there was a long list... mostly associated with printers from what I could gather) and I repaired the disc. A previous verify showed their was nothing wrong though. I set the start up disc to be the hard drive and restart. No change. It goes through the regular apple start up screen and instead of giving me the user login screen, it gives me the unix command line.
I called Apple support and described the problem and what I had done to troubleshoot so far. He figured something bad happened with the Security Update. Support recommended a safe boot by holding the shift key. We did that... same thing except this time the status bar indicator on start up has the words "Safe Boot" underneath. Support suggested that I do an archive and install of the OS. I don't want to try this untill I back up the entire 160 GB hard drive, which has about 20 GB free.
I did have a partial back-up on an external drive 40 gig HD last week, but I needed the space for a video project and overwrote it. The kicker is, that last week I ordered a 400 gig HD for back up and video work and it should be in very soon.
Anyway... so I know that reinstall of the OS will probably fix my problems, but does anyone know another way that I can make it so that I get my regular login instead of the unix or restore the GUI from the command line?
I think it's important to note that evertime I logout of the unix or screw up the unix login the screen goes mometarily to the Aqua Blue background, th little spiral waiting animation and eventually a blue screen and then the unix login screen.
Trying to look on the positive side, I told the girlfriend that we wouldn't be able to use the computer over the weekend and being free from it for a few days is not necessarily a bad thing.

Welcome to Apple Discussions, Paul!
What I would do is the following.
I would start from the CD and repair disk permissions again. I would try to see if Safari is available for use on the CD and go download again the Security Update 2005-009(Panther Client) and reinstall it again.
This is all conditional on whether or not you can use Safari from the CD, see your HD and if you can access your computer desktop though. If you absolutely must use the command line to accomplish this, I'm afraid I can't help you.
I do hope this works.

  • BSD/Darwin

    I have no idea on any of these problems and whats pram, i just have a mac
    that dual boots XP and Mac OS X. It has been like this for a week, i think it started like this after i did a security update? or a important update that was recommended that needed to reboot. But i needed to do something after that on Windows, so when it rebooted, i ran windows holding down the options button.
    After that, i shut it down. Oh and before doing the update, i upgraded my ram to 4 Gigs. so after a day i tried to boot my computer, using Mac, but it showed up with a black screen sometimes with the BSD/Darwin, other times it just showed a darkened black screen that kept loading with no stop. When it showed the BSD/Darwin however, it was logging into i think someone else-computer.local. I was on a network that was shared, so it was logging into someone else's. Other than that. I can run windows normally.
    Any Suggestions
    Urgent Help needed. I hope i don't need to reinstall since many of my important documents are on the mac partition.
    And i do not have the mac os x install disk with me. its another country.

    Tough with no tools, but try the fsck here... Resolve startup issues and perform disk maintenance with Disk Utility and fsck...

  • Please Help :( iMac 20" refuses to boot up with anymore than 1gb ram?

    Please Help iMac 20" refuses to boot up with anymore than 1gb ram?  It was fine 4 days ago and had been working with a 1gb stick in one slot and a 2gb stick, which had replaced the orignal 1gb stick that I got it with, in the other and it had shown 3gb of ram and was working just fine with that since November?  It went to sleep briefly 4 days ago while I was waiting on a customer and I came back to try to wake it up and it never would forcing me to hard boot it.  When I did that it would only go to a black screen with a solid white light on the power indicator.  Over and over again and same thing.  I read and tried every suggestion I could possibly find in this and a few other mac forums to no avail.
    I finally after reading about RAM issues etc.  I decided to power off and take out the ram sticks and try them one at a time in each slot.  So I took out the 2gb stick and did the SMC reset and it would boot up and work just fine with the 1 gb of ram.  So then I went through the same process with the 2gb stick and it would not boot up only go to a black screen with white solid light again (NOT flashing).  So then I tried the other original 1gb I had replaced with the 2gb and it worked just find like the other 1gb.  So then I tried just 1gb stick in the other ram slot (back facing one) and with just the 1gb strip it booted up and worked fine.  Tried it with the other 1gb stick and once again that one too worked just fine.  So I determined it wasn't the slot itself I thought?  I then tried the 2gb in the back slot and it would not boot only go to the black screen white solid light deal like before.  So I thought well ok it's obviously the 2gb ram must have somehow went bad (even though I have only had it since November) and I thought well I will just use the (2) 1gb sticks in each slot and then that will at least give me 2gb because only 1gb really ***** LOL.  So I proceeded to go through the same shut down process installed both sticks (I always push them to I feel them click and my fingers have a nice indention on them) reset the SMC and turned the power one and.... It would only go to the black screen with white solid light on power indicator????  I went through the same above process at least 3 times and again today a few times and I can't figure it out and I tried to search and search and I couldn't find anything like what I am experiencing.....What happened?  Please help this slow Imac is killing me.  It will work with 1gb ram only nothing more?  Here are the specifics of my Imac.
    It is a 20" Late 2006 Intel Core 2 Duo 2.16 ATI Radeon X1600 256 MB graphics card and Ram with now only 1gb (did have 3gb) and I am running OSX Lion 10.7.5
    When I go to system report and go under memory it shows this:

  • All agents were logged of automatically from agent dekstop

    Hello,
    We had an issue last week where all agents where logged of automatically.  By the way we have UCCE version 8, CTIOS agent desktop 8, Call manager 8, and 7961 Cisco phones. Agents were able to log back in and everything seems to be working fine.  We are running duplex mode in call center. on the CTIOS server it show in call manger the agent destkop unregister, however the call manager and switch logs doesnt show unregister. It is really weird and on the switch there isnt any errors that indicate that packets were loss, does any UCCE expert out there know what could of been the root cause.  The error on the CTIOS server says cucm faulire for all those phones but phones werent unregistered.
    Any Suggestion please help.
    Thanks,

    All agents logged off, not just half? Typically when you run in duplex, half of those CTI OS Agent Desktops should connect to your secondary CTIOS server (50% chance at login). Are the effected agents all in the same location? To me this points to perhaps being a network issue if everyone was effected.
    Can you run a report on the Logout codes for the effected agents? What logout codes were recorded for this event?

  • IMac Starts Up Automatically at Midnight. Why?

    Since I installed Leopard my (intel) iMac's been automatically starting up at midnight on certain nights of the week (Tuesday night is one).
    Does anyone know why this is happening and more importantly how I can stop it?

    Thanks for the replies. As my iMac fired up again at midnight last night I was able to check the console log this morning.
    First of all:
    1) I'm not connected by a wire/cable.
    2) I do have EyeTV installed but it's set not to check for updates.
    So onto the log. Immediately before the "Shutdown NOW!" is "*Wakein: 0 entries in power event schedule table" so I assume there's nothing set to wake it up.
    The entries on waking up are:

  • Simple question: I placed a document in iCoud on my iMac and it appeared on my iOS devices. If I change it on my iPad it changes on my iMac. Now, how do I change it and save it on my iMac so it automatically changes on my iOS devices?

    Simple question: I placed a document in iCoud on my iMac and it appeared on my iOS devices.
    If I change it on my iPad it changes on my iMac.
    Now, how do I change it and save it on my iMac so it automatically changes on my iOS devices?

    Welcome to the Apple Community.
    I have seen previous versions mentioned in a pop up message before on iCloud.com, but I'm not really sure at all how it would help, as I couldn't get it to do anything.
    The best advice I have at this time is to back up your work on your iOS device by regularly saving it to iTunes, if anything goes wrong you can then either load it into the numbers app again on the device or recover it via iTunes on your computer.
    My syncs are immediate, I never get chance to see if it works in the background, sorry.

  • IMac won't automatically connect to Wi-Fi.

    iMac won't automatically connect to Wi-Fi.  I can connect manually using "Network Diagnostics".  After I select my router the connection is made.  How can I make it automatic again?  I only have a medium/low expertise.  Software is Mac OS X v10.7.5.
    The problem all started when I let Nintendo do a computer share in order to connect to a Wii U.  The tech was into so many things I couldn't keep track of them.  I have tried everything I know to fix it but to no avail.  I even let Nintendo try twice to correct this...no luck.

    Hello, how do you fetit to connect?
    Make a New Location, Using network locations in Mac OS X ...
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2712
    Instead of joining it from the list, click the WiFi icon at the top, and click join other network. Fill in everything as needed.

    I have tried to use class net.sourceforge.jtds.jdbc.TdsCore but in constructor of TdsCore class there are two parameters needed one is ConnectionJDBC2 and another is SQLDiagnostic.

    Please reply it is urgent...!!
    Thanks in advance......!!

    if you want to use log4j then,
    in your project create a file called log4j.properties and add this
    # Set root logger level to INFO and its only appender to ConsoleOut.
    log4j.rootLogger=INFO,ConsoleOut
    # ConsoleOut is set to be a ConsoleAppender.
    log4j.appender.ConsoleOut=org.apache.log4j.ConsoleAppender
    # ConsoleOut uses PatternLayout.
    log4j.appender.ConsoleOut.layout=org.apache.log4j.PatternLayout
    log4j.appender.ConsoleOut.layout.ConversionPattern=%-5p: [%d] %c{1} - %m%n
    log4j.logger.org.apache.jsp=DEBUG
    #Addon for
    com.sun.faces.level=FINEGo to your class and add this line
    private static final Logger logger = Logger.getLogger("classname");and then you can use
    logger.info();
    logger.error();

  • Why is the brightness of my iMac become 100% automatically when I turn on..

    Why is the brightness of my iMac become 100% automatically when I turn on my computer even though I set the brightness to the lowest before I shut it down.
    I want to set the brightness to the lowest every time I turn on the computer automatically.
    Is there anything I can do?

    Hi,
    There seems to be a serious issue with screen brightness on the 24" iMac. About 6 days ago I bought a 24" iMac (2.66 Mhz model w/4 GB RAM + 640HD).
    Out of the box it had Leopard 10.5.5 installed; there were several problems.
    1. Screen brightness was way too BRIGHT. Display preferences would not pull brightness down. At least not down far enough so that the screen could be viewed without extreme discomfort. Plus add insult to injury a reboot would reset the preferences to maximum brightness. NOTE: An upgrade to 10.6.1 did NOT fix the issue.
    2. Viewing a browser page via either Safari or Firefox (latest versions of each) was not good. A vertical scrolling would be jumpy and appear pixelated. Upgrade to 10.6.1 seemed to fix most of the issue in Safari, but Firefox was still not working properly. The issue appeared like a horizontal "ripple" in about the bottom 2/3 of the browser window. The effect did NOT extend outside of browser window. Changing screen resolutions did not work.
    3. Connecting a USB Logitech head set caused issues with Sound preferences.
    If the head set was connected during startup the machine would recognize them as main sound. The internals speakers did NOT appear in the Sound preferences. as an optional choice. Removing USB headset and reboot would return the internal speakers to the Sound preferences. Plugging in headseat would work for a while. We could repeat and same problem would occur.
    These are all in 10.6.1 - definate bugs.
    Returned with the iMac to the Apple store. Bottom line, after nearly three hours; the Apple technician, and everyone could see what we were talking about.
    Regarding the screen brightness. Nothing they could do about it. They stated that "not too many people have complained about it, to their knowledge." They stated that the electronics in the "florescent" panel could not be turned down the same way. TRANSLATION: The programers at Apple let this one slip past them. As a customer (software programmer & network analyst) I expected a bit more of an intelligent answer.
    However.
    Examining the 20" model I noticed that we could turn down the screen brightness - at least to a level that my wife and I could live with. PLUS the settings remained after a restart. Something that was NOT happening with the 24" model.
    So - we exchanged the 24" for a 20". Frankly we are a LOT happier. The Safari/Firefox issue is still carried over to the 20". However it is not nearly so noticable on the smaller screen.
    Plus the USB headset did not cause the same Sound Preference issues.
    So - Thanks for the speedy return/exchange of the iMac. But someone needs to look at this from the programming side of things.

    You're facing memory constraints in your device. Perform the following steps -
    Give a soft reset by removing the battery for 30sec.
    Check how much memory is free in your device to Options -> Status -> Free Memory. To view all the database size go to Option -> Status -> click Menu button then select Database Sizes
    Delete less frequently used application. To delete go to Options -> Advanced Options -> Applications -> highlight the application you want to delete -> click Menu and select Delete
    If you stored your picture in device memory them move them to your media card
    For details check knowledge Base KB11570.

  • How do I stop my imac OSX from automatically opening itunes 10 when a new device is attached via USB.

    How do I stop my imac OSX from automatically opening itunes 10 when a new device is attached via USB? The devices do not pop up in itunes under a sync category, so I can't turn them off one by one, nor would I want to.
    I apologize if this has been answered, but I couldn't find the solution for this problem.

    Thanks for the reply but it didn't solve the problem unfortunately and I didn't think it would as I only downloaded Firefox for the first time a few days ago even though I have had this problem for over six months using IE.

  • IMac logs me out and closes all applications while working

    Hi,
    I am facing a ridiculous problem now with my new iMac. I have been using if for a while now. Recently it has started showing this issue.
    Issue:
    While I am working on the mac, suddenly without any notifications or any actions being taken iMac logs out. It even closes all my open/working applications all of a sudden and takes me to the login screen.
    When I log back in, it's like the system has been restarted/afresh. And I again need to open all my applications.
    This has started from last couple of weeks, and happens once/twice each day.
    Anybody have any clue why this happens? It has become a headache for me as it closes all my unsaved works too

    Thanks for the reply baltwo.
    Sorry that I missed to mention that. Before posting the question here, I searched the support forum and found a similar suggestion.
    Unfortunately that is not the issue with me. I have checked that and that option
    +System Preferences->Security->General and ensure log out after XX minutes of inactivity isn't checked.+
    The logging out issue still persists. And I am unable to find the solution yet.
