Help!  iMac monitor problem

I was online downloading and reading emails when all of a sudden, long pixels the length of my screen and in varying widths in various colors appeared on my screen obscuring the desktop. When I move my mouse, the pointer became scrambled and whereever I move my mouse over to, the image under it gets scrambled with glitchy pixelated graphics. I was downloading emails at the time so I thought perhaps its some kind of virus but I hadn't opened any email attachments. I quickly forced my computer to shutdown, holding down the power button and restarted. Same thing happens, the whole screen has the long bars with various widths, looking glitched. I put in an OS X install disk and restarted from that, and it appears to be ok while starting up from it which lead me to believe its a software/hard disk problem. But after I re-installed OS X and restarted again to read the system software off the hard disk, the pixelation came back. I couldn't get to my desktop using OS X install disk so I had to restart using the original system 9 disk (no screen problems here as well) that came with my iMac for it will allow me to go in back up some of my files from desktop first because it seems like I would have to re-initialize my hard disk and re-install everything. Anyone have any insight on this?

okie dokie...now i'm really scratchin' my head on this one: since i last posted, i just left the computer alone to rest and just recently i tried to start up the computer using the OS x system that in the computer already . i got to the white apple screen, (no pixelation, just like normal) and the little pin-wheel thingy spins for like 5 - 10 mins then a black blue screen with a white box with pixelation which i'm thinking is the arrow. when I move the mouse it doesn't move. then i did a force shutdown. when i tried again to start up from the system 9 disk that came with the computer, the start up screen with color bar pops up (no pixelation, as normal), then as the color bar is almost filled, then comes a black/blank/dead screen. What do you guys think it is now?
I guess the only thing i can do now because I can't see properly what's on the screen, is take the harddrive out and hook it as an external drive to get the files I need out of it. does anyone know if its possible with these harddrives?

  • IMac Monitor Problems

Today I was using my iMac G5 and all of a sudden the monitor started blinking and the colors turned to almost a negative and the screen went all staticy. Now its been doing this off and on. Even when its sitting being unused it will start flashing and I'll get rolling bars of static, almost like trying to tune in a TV with rabbit-ears.
    Has anyone experienced this before?
I've had the computer for about 18 months now.

Welcome to Discussions - try resetting both your SMU and your PRAM. Remove all peripherals except for your keyboard and mouse.
Ket us know how you make out, there are other things you can try if these don't work.

Get a lens cleaner disc. One with brushes and try that. CDs and DVDs use different lenses, so since CDs load and play, I strongly suspect a dirty lens.

  • External monitor problem after Lion upgrade

    Hi,
I have a 20" iMac which has a screen resolution of 1680x1050(ATI Radeon HD 2600 Pro 256 MB).  I have been using an additional 168x1050 monitor(Dell 2009W) in dual screen mode.  This was working fine with Leopard, Snow Leopard, but it does not work after I upgraded to Lion.  The screen appears to look fine for a few seconds then blanks out for a second and repeats.   The only way I can use my extra monitor is by reducing the resolution to  1360x768.
Does anyone know of a fix or if apple is working on a fix.   I called apple support, but all of their suggestion (fix disk permisions, reset PRam) did not help.
    Thanks for any help.
    Paul

Similar problem here with a 15" MacBook Pro purchased in late 2009. Connected to a new Dell ST2210 21.5" display via a DVI cable and Apple's mini display port to single link dvi adapter. The cable is dual link but seems to work fine the majority of the time.
When I wake my mac from sleep 1 time out of 3 I see black and white static on my external screen that only goes away when I unplug the screen or power it up and down.
I've tested another older MacBook Pro with the screen and everything works fine and when I connect with a different dvi cable I get the same issue.
When I called Apple support, they said it was a software issue and directed me to remove some .plist files in my library. I did what they said on the phone and it seemed to work for maybe 6 sleep cycles but the issue came back again. Since then I've reset the VRAM following their directions in a support article on the subject of external display static. (http://support.apple.com/kb/TS2377)
Does anyone know of a way to fix this or if Apple is actually listening? VGA works fine but I hate the quality of VGA compared to DVI. Should I look into getting an mini display port to dvi adapter from someone other than Apple?
It's annoying to have purchased a perfectly Mac compatible monitor which you really need, just to discover that Apple is having trouble with their mini display port...
Here's another guy with a similar issue and the same monitor (http://en.community.dell.com/support-forums/peripherals/f/3529/t/19330464.aspx#1 9691738). However, from the research I've done, his conclusion about it being the monitor seems to be false, especially with all the complaints here about similar issues regardless of display model.
I need an answer that does not include going back to VGA. What are your suggestions? I do have HDMI but would rather not shell out the money for a cable and adapter...

  • IMac Monitor not working properly

My iMac 24 monitor has started acting strangely.  I hve what looks like snow or flickering across the whole screen.  I tried rebooting and at the Applw startup screen the scrrne is covered with noise and the Apple lgo is semi duplicated higher on the screen.  It seems to bootup and then the screen realy goes crasies with black blocks in 4 columns on the right side of the screen.
looks like a monitor problem.  I tried unplugging everyting and startw ith shift key.  no luck, same thing.
Any suggestions other than take to Apple.  It is a 2008 unit so it is outside of warranty....
I think I have uptodate backups of most of info using time machine.  I may be missing a bit from Parallels, but should be enough to get back.
I currently have it unplugged to see if cooling it down helps.  I am guessing graphics card is ...
It was not overheated when this occurred, I had just started it from sleep mode...

You're likely correct in that it could be a failed/failing graphics card but you could try a couple of things that might help, if you haven't already. Sounds like you have backup organised - you may need it.
Are you really running 10.8.2, as per your profile - 10.8.4 is the current version? Applying the combo will bring you up-to-date with the OS: http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1659
Try a Safe Boot: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1564 - once booted restart as normal from the Apple menu.
Boot into the Recovery HD and run Disk Utility to see if any repairs are required. Restart holding down Command = r - more info here: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4718

  • IMac monitor mess

The week for before Christmas 2005 I got a new iMac G5 iSight. From the first boot the monitor sucked--staticky, multiple docks, triple finder menus, etc. After about 30 seconds the screen problems stopped and the Mac behaved as it should.
I took it to one Mac retailer/service department and they said they couldn't duplicate the problem. I brought it home and the same effects were happening. So I took the computer to another Mac service department, about two hours away.
They replaced the logic board, and now the monitor problems are worse than ever. The static is on screen and doesn't disappear after 30 seconds like before. My finder menu shows up below (underneath) the dock. Despite maybe an hour or two of use since purchasing last month--it appears there are ghosts/burned images in the screen. Like files and stickies notes.
Since Apple service centers can't seem to figure this one out, and technical suppport + "chat" guys are no help at all...anybody have any ideas?

Is there a reason that you haven't tried calling Apple? Chat support is fine, but I like to talk to someone instead.
As far as Apple service centers go, I like to deal with the source so I would stick to Apple Stores or AppleCare.
The host images are something that can happen with any LCD screen. If it is what I think it is, it should go away rather soon. I tend to put windows in the same place when I use my Mac, so it happens to me often, but dissappears quickly also.
I think you have a pretty clear case of a DOA Mac and should not settle for another repair. It never worked, you tried a fix and now it is worse. Contact Apple Consumer Relations and get a replacement.

  • Display discoloration on the left side of my iMac monitor.

I recently notice a dim discoloration on the left side of my iMac monitor. From top to bottom and about 1/8 of the screen. Kinda like a faint burn but has not a distinguishable image just seem to be wavy lines up and down and starts happening as soon as I bootup. Is this common and will my applecare cover a replacement?

I'm not even sure why you posting on a help forum when you have AppleCare, the first thing I'd recommend you do is   pick up the phone and call AppleCare, describe the problem and they will advise how to proceed. It's that simple, follow the directions they provide and the issue should be handled.

  • My iMac monitor will flash sometimes.

My iMac monitor got some problem.
It won't turn on during startup but it will turn on after a minute.
Sometimes, my iMac monitor will flash suddenly.
    What's the problem?

Turn off the iMac, unplug the power cord for 30 seconds.  Plug it back in...  Hold down the COMM+Option+P+R keys when you turn the iMac back on, kept them held down.  When you hear the starup chime twice, let go of the keys.
If this does not work, make sure you have unplugged all external devices and reboot again.
If that all does not work, take her into a ARS...
    Hope this helps.

  • Possibly mundane Mini-DVI to VGA into an external monitor problem

    Hi,
I've had a look over the interwebs regarding my problem and it seems as if it's not unusual to have external monitor problems but I'm not sure if mine is slightly different:
I had a perfectly working set up with my new Macbook (the white one, '06 model I believe), that was connected to my Hanns-G HU196D monitor via a mini-DVI to VGA adapter, no problems whatsoever. But for a couple of weeks now my Macbook just flickers a light blue colour, with nothing at all on the monitor, and my macbook is unusable until I remove the adapter. I've read about updating firmware but I can't see my desktop once the macbook is connected to the monitor so it's not possible to configure anything. I've read somewhere that my external monitor isn't compatible with this set up, but it was until a couple of weeks ago!
My Macbook's 4 months old now and since then I've bought a new mini-dvi to vga adapter and a new VGA cable, no connections seem loose on either mini-dvi port or my monitor's vga port.
    Thanks if you can help!
    Jack

You will need to use a mini Dvi-dvi and a dvi-svideo/rca adapter.
    Joy joy hallelujah.
Pardon the sarcasm...I just wasted 3 hours of my life trying to sort the issue out.
Heard a KWORLD PlusTV PCTOTV Converter SA235 USB 2.0 Interface would sort the issue out for under 40$ but it's not Mac.
    Hope that helps.

  • FCE HD Output to Sony Trintron Monitor Problems

I am trying to output my Program Canvas to my Sony monitor, via a Hollywood Dazzle Firewire converter. When the Dazzle is trying to output to monitor, I get a very pixelated image and distorted audio.
All the settings under view appear to be correct, with Apple Firewire NTSC. Are there any thoughts at to what I might be missing here that could help fix this problem.
    Thanks

Connect your DV cam & see if you can play your Canvas to your camera. If that works ok, then the problem is either in the Dazzle, the TV or your cables. I would suspect the Dazzle first, or perhaps the FW cable second. Check whatever you can on the Dazzle setup - there might be some DIP switches on the bottom that need to be set.
You might find some informative/revealing material in this review.
(fwiw, I've never been wild about the Dazzle products myself, the quality never seemed up to other products on the market.)

  • Can I connect Mac mini to iMac monitor

Can I connect a Mac mini to iMac monitor ? To view Mac mini files

    Hi Ricemail,
You *may* be able to do so, depending on the specific models of your iMac and Mac Mini, using a feature known as Target Display Mode. You may find the following article helpful:

  • My iMac monitor just goes black

I have a 2009 27inch iMac with an external Samsung monitor.
Out of the blue, the iMAC MONITOR just goes black. Like it went to sleep or something.
This has happened 4 times in the last 2 weeks. (luckily I can restart the computer because the external Samsung still works.
I restart the computer and the monitor works fine again.
    Help.
    Thanks.

    Hi.
    Screen goes totally black.
The good news is, I read around and was advised to turn off the computer and unplug it, and plug it back in and start up. That seems to have fixed it. So far, so good.
    Thanks.

  • External Monitor Problem

I've got a 24" Imac and just bought a Lindy Mini DVI>HDMI connector so I can watch DVD's via my LCD panel on the wall.
I connect up, go to displays but the external screen is not found. (detect displays)
Am I missing something with these imac DVI connections? I don't have anything else to test it on and I've tried various options on the TV.
    I'm sending a 1280 x 800 signal to the TV. It supports 1920x1080
    Help appreciated!
    K.

The 2009 iMac models have a Mini DisplayPort. 2008 and earlier Intel iMacs have a mini-DVI port.
Some display settings are stored in PRAM, so if you have not already, try resetting PRAM
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1379
If that does not help, you can also try resetting the SMC (power management), which is basically unplugging and reconnecting your Mac following a precise procedure.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1543
When you reconnect it, as a test, try connecting it by itself to a separate wall power outlet instead of to a crowded and/or old power strip. Do not connect any peripheral devices except for your USB mouse/keyboard initially. Then connect just your HDTV.
Also, as another test, you can try connecting the HDTV and starting up from your Mac OS X installation disc. You won't be able to do anything with the display, but if it is recognized as being attached, you should see the computer's Desktop extended to the display. This will help isolate your problem to hardware or software.
