HELP!!!!!! iMac "No Entry" sign

Hi all,
My G5 recently started behaving strangly, i.e. not responding when I double clicked on things etc.. and so I did a re-start. When I boot it up, the apple appears and then it is followed by an image of a No Entry sign (rather than the usual log in screen). I have re-booted several times and nothing. I have tried zapping the perameter ram and booting from disc but nothing works.
It is only 1 year old!
Any ideas?
Please help

  • My iMac won't start up (no entry sign/folder with question mark)

    Hello,
I recently updated the mac software through the App Store and it is now unable to start up.
When it starts up it has a white screen and a folder icon with a question mark in it. However, sometimes it has a 'no entry' sign instead.
I've found a few solutions online involving using the installation disk and holding certain buttons and going through safe mode but I'm not sure whether the mac is picking up my wireless keyboard. I've replaced the batteries and tried the wireless keyboard from my other mac but nothing has worked.
    Can anyone help?
According to the box it is an iMac 27"/3.06/2x2GB/1TB/4670
And it's running Mountain Lion- I can't be too sure exactly which version because I can't get to the system information.
    Thanks
    James

  • HELP: MacBook Pro won't start. MachKernel/slow/no entry sign/erratic

(having major issues figuring out which forum to post this question... In error, I posted this last night to the Mac Pro forum, then this morning to the OSX Leopard Forum. I think it goes here.)
MacBook has been running slow the past couple of days. Yesterday, it wouldn't start-up, and after resetting the PRAM, I got the no-entry sign (barred circle).
Restarting with V: I got a mach kernel error. Found a help sheet on that, but when trying to restart with X, got only as far as the blue screen.
This morning, miraculously, it started up, very slow. I then tried to backup my files, with no success. Tried to burn to a dvd, but that was unsuccessful. (Later at the Apple Store where I was able to backup a few essential files realized that the Burn DVD folder was empty.
Tried to restart using it in target disc mode using FireWire, but on my good macbook, although the slave computer appears, I couldn't access any data ("alias can't be found")
I've tried restarting from a bootable disc. It gets past the apple, the gears, then I can just hear the dvd drive spinning and eventually, I force quit. So restarting from a bootable disc seems out.
For a while, it would startup, but aside from the hard drive icon, the file (pdf, doc, and jpg) icons on my desktop wouldn't change from generic to specific and the rainbow wheel just kept spinning and spinning. I finally forced quit.
Update: Just got back from the AppleStore where I was able to backup a few essential files. It started up again, very very slowly, and all the icons finally changed to their specific thumbnails.
It appears as though it works better if it's rested for a while, although I'm not kidding myself: it does appear as though the hard drive is failing. After the trip to the AppleStore, I bought an 320GB hard drive. I'd like to finish backing up - please don't ask me why I didn't do this before going to the AppleStore...
    Anyway, any help much appreciated,
    --Laura

I've goggled just about everything and I can't seem to fix this problem.

  • 'No Entry Sign' on Macbook Boot-up with new SSD

    Hi Everyone,
I'm a first time poster looking for some help.
I recently installed a new SSD (Samsung 830 128GB 2.5") in my white Macbook (2,1).
After buying the SSD I did a clean install of Mac OS X Mountain Lion, however, due to not having a physical disc, I performed the install using my iMac, the Mountain Lion DMG, and the new SSD in an enclosure. The install seemed to go fine and my iMac will boot up from the SSD with no problems, but when I try to put the SSD in the Macbook, I get a 'No Entry' sign and no sign of life.
I have tried putting the SSD in an enclosure and tried to boot it with the Macbook by holding 'Option' to choose my start-up disk. When I do this, it reads both the 'Macintosh HD' and the 'Recovery HD' but when I click on either option to boot, it shows the 'No Entry' sign. Is there anyone who could suggest anything - any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Mr Flollop

I have now managed to get Mountain Lion working on my Macbook - even though as Mike has correctly pointed out, it is not in the system requirements.
I believe the problem lay with installing Lion on the SSD via a different machine than the one the SSD was meant for - though this should not have been the case.
I ended up installing the SSD in the Macbook and booting Mountain Lion install from a USB stick - it worked and Mountain Lion is running well on my machine.

  • 24" MAC freezes on start up with no entry sign-II

Right, this is how is all started:
I turned on my MAC and got the gong, grey screen, spinning wheel, and apple.
I then got, instead of the apple, the no entry sign after a longish wait
I started in safe mode and repaired permissions.
Repaired he HD too (no problem, according to the disk utility there.
    No progress.
    So:
Having bought my iMAC with Leopard and later upgraded to SL, I started with the Leopard start up disk (installation) that I got with my computer, entered in disk utikities and erased the disk.
    I then re-installed Leopard.
    I then re updated SL
I then restarted with Leopard again in order to enter disk utilities and access the Restore from Time Machine option.
I went through the process of restoring from TM
When the process was supposedly finished, I was asked to click on a button to re start, which I did.
    The Surprise:
The computer then started up, gong, grey screen and..... a line scanning the screen from top to bottom darkening the screen a little and then a dialogue box appearing (black box, white text in several languages), telling me that "..I needed to restart the computer, I should press and hold the power button till it shut down and then press it again to restart it."
I did. It didn't work, the same instructions to press and hold the power button, shut down, release and press again appeared again.
Now I shut down the computer pressing and holding the power button and feel desperate. (I am writing from my MacBook Pro)
    Where have I gone wrong?
    Please.... Help!

  • Dreamweaver icon has no entry sign on it

    Issue:
My Dreamweaver (CS 5.5) icon has a no entry sign on it and I get an error when trying to launch the application. When I log in as another user Dreamweaver works fine. This leads me to believe the issue is with my user account but how could I determine the exact cause of the fault. My Photoshop works fine, I have checked and Dreamweaver and Photoshop both have the same permissions. I have also tried re-installing and fixing drive permissions
    Setup:
    iMac 3.1Ghz Intel core i3 8Gb RAM and a 250Gb hard drive
    Mac OS 10.8.2
    Adobe CS5.5 (Dreamweaver v11.5.1.5366)
Failing account is a network admin account
Working account is a local admin account
Any help would be greatly appreciated

You get that error when you try to run PowerPC code on Intel machine without Rosetta. Obviously CS5.5 isn't PowerPC based, the possible reason is your Launch Service database is corrupt. If so, the command to reset the database is:
    lsregister -kill -seed

  • I have tried downloading firefox but the icon now has a 'no entry' sign over the firefox icon and it won't open. whats wrong!!!

I have been using firefox and was recently prompted to upgrade to a new firefox. I followed the instructions and dragged the icon into my apps folder. It had a 'no entry' sign on top of it which I didn't really understand. Now it won't start up and gives me a message saying 'You cannot open the application “Firefox” because it is not supported on this architecture'.
    Can you help?

  • Macbook Pro Does Not Start Up - Stuck at "No Entry" Sign

    Hello,
I've been dealing with this hours, so at last I decided to get help from the community.
Let me explain the issue first.
I have checked Software Update, and there was two updates. First one was Java and the other one was EFI Update 2.7. I don't remember the Java update version. After I applied the update, the MBP rebooted itself as it should do; bu the problem occured at that reboot. OSX tried to start up three times, like as it was failing to install the updates after reboot. And at the fourth time, after a few minutes the Apple logo turned into a "No Entry Sign". And it stuck like that. Now, the MBP cannot boot normally, I can only run it on safe mode.
    I have reset PRAM.
As far as I read about the issue over the boards, the problem occurs to be an HDD problem. Yet I can run the OSX in safe mode, which bugs me. So I downloaded SMART Utility to check the HDD. It says there is 1 Pending Bad Sector, and 1 Removed Bad Sector.
What do I do now, any solutions you can offer?

As I'm sure you are already aware, that HDD has failed to the point it cannot find a bootable volume.
If you have a backup, no worries.
If you do not have a backup, you could try to reinstall the operating system and get the disk to a state in which it will at least mount. Then, copy whatever information remains intact to another disk. I would be inclined to replace the drive now, install the failed one in an external enclosure, and attempt to extract whatever information you need from it.

  • Why do I have no entry sign apper when I log in

When I turn my iMac on the log in screen appears, when I select my (or any for that matter) user accounts, I am prompted for password, which is accepted and the system goes through the start up process, rather than starting the apple logo in the middle of the screen turns to a 'No Entry' sign - how do I over come this and what is likely to have caused it?

How do I tell if it is full?
If some basics are there and functioning, you may boot into Safe Mode (see point #1 in the linked doc), or into the Recovery System, from where you could launch the Disk Utility to look at and work on your HDD.
Uhm, just in case: You do have a backup, yes?

  • No entry sign on reinstalled Address Book

I have reinstalled address book (after deleting it for reasons I can't recall).  It has contacts in it and opens up fine but a) there is a "no entry" sign when I open Applications as a stack and) b it doesn't sync with my iPhone 4, though everything else does sync, and the "sync contacts" box is checked in iTunes sync info tab.
Are these issues related?  Can anyone help me with either/both?
    Thank you!

Thanks.  The plot thickens in that sync has now happened sucessfully and all my contacts from the Mac are on the iphone and viceversa (tho in two diffrent groups on the phone).  So that's ok now - just have to de-dupe.
The story doesn't seem that strange to me having lived it...for the last 5 years I've had email contacts on entourage, addreses on a big fat Word document that I used for mail merge, and phone numbers on my old Nokia.  I kind of half-heartdely started using Mac Address Book, but never worked out how to get it to talk to the other lists so it was wasn't very useful. Getting the phone was the nudge to bring all these things together.  Which at last I kind of have.
The "no entry" sign is still there after the reinstall which I did using advice from this link http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=Mac/10.6/en/19535.html but it doesn't seem to be affecting things at all.  Maybe a complete reinstall is the way forward.
    Thanks for all your help!

  • No Entry Sign on booting

Ok so i have a old eMac, and its not booting.
Its just sits with the apple logo on start up, makes the chime but does not move.
I held the option key, and got the option to boot of the mac HD.
But as soon as i click on it, the apple logo dissapears, and then there is a no entry sign.
I have tried to rebuild this machine, and its starts to load off the disk, but then the no entry sign pops back.
Please can someone help, its driving me crazy

    Hi celeben,
I asked " Have you tried to repair the disk?" an you said you had, " I have tried both, but to no avail "
But by the sound of it maybe you haven't.
In Applications/Utilities open the Disk Utility. Selecting the hard drive, there will be displayed S.M.A.R.T. status for your drive. it should say verified.
From that same application, you can do Repair permissions and Verify disk.
If the disk needs repairing then these are the instructions.
The startup drive can only be repaired from another drive. Simply loading the install disk is not sufficient. You have to boot from the install disk.
To do this: Insert the Install Disk 1 into the drive and then select Restart, then hold down the C key until you hear the chime.
This will take you to the installation software, but you do not want to install.
Select your language, then go up to the top menu bar to First Aid or Disk Utilities, depending on the system and navigate to the Disk Utilities app.
Then you will be able to Repair Disk on the start up drive.
If it finds errors, repeat the process until it reports no errors.
    Then run Repair Permissions.
After these repairs, quit the application, and restart normally.

  • My MacBook Pro with retina keeps on showing no entry sign on startup

Every time I try to log into my MacBook a no entry sign keeps showing!! Help! And I can't reinstall mountain lion because there is no disk for me to select

You need to go to an Apple store, G Bar, ASAP. Your Mac SSD/Flash storage has died and needs to be replaced or the complete system replaced.

  • Grey screen"no entry sign/question mark

My imac was working fine and then the browsers began freezing.
Tried force quits but no apps came up in the window.
Tried restarting and heard a loud beep followed by grey screen and folder with question mark.
Took out all connections and tried starting up again, this time a grey screen with a no entry sign appeared.
Powered off and on again, this time blue screen appeared after 5 mins then went on to mouse/keyboard bluetooth set up,finally got back on to my log in screen.Logged in and tried disk utility which began verifying permissions but got stuck saying 4 mins remaining.
Spotlight was also beginning to re-index.
another restart, and no entry sign appears.
Next restart, reset Pram, apple logo appeared and stuck on grey screen with nothing happening.
    Any ideas people?
    thanks in advance!
Also,is there still an apple support contact number from the UK? used to be able to phone through for one off incidents.

    just done this:
    "Try Disk Utility
Start from your Mac OS X Install disc: Insert the installation disc, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu.
    Click the First Aid tab.
Click the disclosure triangle to the left of the hard drive icon to display the names of your hard disk volumes and partitions.
Select your Mac OS X volume.
Click Repair. Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk."
Taking AGEs again,ut waiting to see what happens next!
