  • My imac shuts down during the startup process - possible startup file corrupt..??

    startup process begins normally...
grey screen - then the apple - then the spinning wheel -
sometimes shuts down during spinning wheel, sometimes it gets to the blue screen then shuts down

Zap the PRAM and Reset the SMC, then try again. If no go, Bboot with the SL install disc, launch Disk Utility, repair the disk, and restart normally. If that doesn't do the trick reinstall SL and then run Software Update if that does.

  • IMac shuts down during Mac OS X Bootcamp Installation PLEASE HELP!!

    Hi,
Just opened my new iMac and have installed Windows XP Professional SP 2. I have inserted the Mac OS X installation disc, per the instructions, but Boot Camp won't install in Windows! It looks like it is going to copy files, but then it just shuts down all of a sudden and reboots to Windows. Once it is rebooted, there is a "critical error" message - yikes! I wish I didn't need Windows on my new Mac, but I have to have it for work. Please please please help.
    Thanks

Sounds like the new iMac may not support XP. Someone was curious about XP support on MBP today also.
For my time/effort/money I'd choose Windows 7 Home Premium, probably 64-bit.
There are Apple support, tech articles and more -

  • 24" Imac shuts down during startup, HD replaced

So my iMac (running Mavericks) was running really slow and wouldn't respond often. It got to the point where it was freezing up or getting the spinning wheel all the time. I assume the HD was failing and bought a new one. I originally had a WD SATA 1TB drive in it (original from apple) So I basically ordered the same thing from Amazon. A WD SATA 1TB. I followed all instructions on iFixit for HD replacement. Overall the installation went fine. Not my first time under the hood of one of my Macs. I ran the recovery mode, formatted the new drive and restored from the time machine backup. All going smoothly. Now when it boots I get the gray screen, apple logo, spinning gear then complete shut down. Zapped PRAM, rest SMC. I'm at a total loss what to do next. PLEASE HELP!!

Try to boot up in Safe Mode. Hold down the "Shift" key as soon as you turn on the computer. This will force a check of the directory, turn off extensions and login items and more.
If that doesn't work, I recommend booting from the Mac OS X install disk and using disk utility to check the drive. Slide the install disk in the drive and then restart holding down the "C" key. Keep holding it down until it is booted up. From the menu select "Disk Utility", then highlight the hard drive, then click "Repair Volume".
Lastly, if that doesn't work - go get a copy of DiskWarrior which is known to fix just about any hard drive problem. Everybody should have a copy of this on hand anyway.
    Good luck!!

  • [HELP] iMac shuts down randomly

I bought my 20-inch iMac back in September, and recently my iMac has been acting strangely.
It will shut down itself randomly, and it's hard to predict when it will shut down.
It shut down yesterday after I got out of shower, and it shut down today after finishing my dinner. I've been trying to use process of elimination to figure what's the root of problem, but it is not as easy as it seems.
What I have known so far is that, the iMac never shuts down when I'm using it, it always happens when I am not around, and there is no one present while I was away so it has to be shutting down by itself. My iMac wasn't overheating either since it's idling while I was away.
Although the iMac did shut down while I was using Boot Camp before. However, after I upgraded to Leopard, my iMac, so far, has not shut down itself randomly while using Boot Camp.
P.S. I leave my iMac on all the time, and I was gone for Thanksgiving for 4 days. Surprisingly, the iMac was still on when I got back from the Thanksgiving break.
After doing some research, I come out of 2 possibilities that cause this problem.
    1st. It's a faulty iMac that I bought.
2nd. The way I have the iMac's power cord connects to the outlet using a 5-Outlet powerstrip, which does not produce enough voltage for iMac.
There are probably more than just these 2 possibilities, I have not yet tried connecting the power cord directly to the outlet since the power cord is not long enough to reach the outlet. I don't think it's a faulty iMac either because the possibility of getting a faulty iMac is pretty low.
This problem is starting getting on my nerve, and I am not sure if I am the only one out there experiencing this sort of problem.
I am sure there are experts out there have solution for this particular problem.

I have had this issue happen twice that I know of in the last month or so.
It has happened each time while burning a DVD in the iMacs internal DVD drive. I think from memory they were both DVD-ROM-UDF discs and both stopped in the middle of the burn.
I can't remember how long the computer was on the first time it happened but this time it was only on for a few minutes.
The only thing I could think it might have to do with is either the USB hub that I'm using or one of the external drives that were attached at the time.
They were being accessed at the time it shutdown so maybe there was a power management issue with dealing with the peripheral devices.
I have experienced inconsistent performance with peripheral ports in Apple products for at least the last 5 years. I have encountered problems with only one firewire port functioning properly on many different machines - i.e there are two ports both work individually, try getting them to work together and one device disappears.
Inconsistent speeds with USB ports acting something like a USB-1 speed or even slower, and non-powered (or... not powered enough) USB ports on the higher end laptops - i.e; PowerBook G4 15inch could not mount an external USB hardrive on any port (without the powerlead) while the lesser iBook 14inch could on either USB port.
I don't know if these issues were specifically designed to be there (I couldn't imagine why) but they do exist and frustrate me daily.
I'd try disconnecting everything including your keyboard and mouse, if you have a spare try those and see what happens.
Once your machine is up and running (if you get that far) try plugging one peripheral in at a time and leave it like that for an hour - see what happens.
If that doesn't work start unplugging your household devices that you seem to have many of. See if this helps - i think it would be better to replace a $60 phone then a $2,000 computer or an old microwave for a newer safer one.
It might be worth going over to you neighbours house to see if the problem persists there, you might have some kind of problem on your electricity connection.
Anyway good luck, let me know how you go.

  • IMac shuts down during startup

My 1.8GHz 20" iMac G5 will shut down soon after I hit the power button. Sometimes I get a grey screen for a few seconds before it shuts down and other times I only see the power light before it shuts down. You can hear things running but I am not sure if it is the fan, hard drive or both.
I took the back off and the first three LED's seem to check out okay. I also reset the PRAM to no avail.
My iMac had been in storage for a while and seemed to boot fine when I first tried. I plugged a portable hard drive into one of the USB jacks on the keyboard and got an error message about USB overcurrent. Before I could even finish reading the message and react to it the machine shut down and hasn't been able to start ever since.
Does anyone have suggestions on a self help fix before I take the machine in to the Apple Store?
    Thanks,
    Sean

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
The purpose of the test is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party software that loads automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, by a font conflict, or by corruption of the file system or of certain system caches.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards, if applicable. Start up in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. You must hold down the shift key twice: once when you turn on the computer, and again when you log in.
Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the startup volume is a Fusion Drive or a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to start up and run than normal, with limited graphics performance, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and Wi-Fi on certain models. The next normal startup may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually login automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem?
After testing, restart as usual (not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of the test.

  • My imac shuts down during the load up screen?

So I just got home and I realized the power was out. I bought this iMac literally like two months ago (I actually bought one two months ago but it wouldn't even turn on so they gave me a new one) It was working perfectly fine, and I was writing a report. I left the computer on and left the house only to return hours later with the power out, and when I turn it on it shows the start up screen with the Apple Logo, the little progress circle, and a progress bar that fills up to the end everytime but once it fills up to the end it stays there for a few minutes then the computer shuts off.
What should I do? I'm not tech expert please help, if it's possible I would really like to recover that report document, I need it by tomorrow!! Please help!!
Regarding Time Machine, no I don't know what it is or how to use it, so I don't think there would be any backup from it I could use.
    Thank you!!
I appologize I don't know how the categories work here!

The same happened to me a few weeks ago on my iMac (2008 24" 2.8 GHz model).  I attempted another boot cycle to go into safe mode while viewing the lines.  What you're not seeing when the progress bar is filling is your iMac attempting 3 tries to boot.  After the third try, if unsuccessful, it will power down.
There's a couple things you might want to try first:
    1)  Unplug everything from the iMac but your USB keyboard and mouse and try booting again;
    2)  Assuming you're running OS X and beyond, attempt booting into safe mode using these instructions:  OS X: What is Safe Boot, Safe Mode? ; or otherwise, if running Mavericks:  OS X Mavericks: Start up in safe mode
In my case, I never got that far because it still wouldn't boot up.  I had to take in into the shop so they could diagnose the problem.  It turns out, in my case, the power supply was faulty and had caused issues with the hard drive.  I had an older backup, but at this point, Apple no longer has parts available for my 5 year old iMac (which is quite a crappy deal).  We examined my options and I decided that I'll be searching outward for another power supply and new hard drive and doing the replacement myself (even if I have to cannibalize another old iMac).  Bonus is I'm in the market for a Macbook Pro now.
l can't say this would be your issue, as there are others that can cause a boot failure; however, if no other info comes your way to help you out, it might likely require a visit to an Apple shop for diagnosis.

  • IMac shuts down during start up

I installed Norton antivirus for mac, and to complete the installation I had to restart the mac.  So it restarts.  (Just to clarify if this does come up, I downloaded and made sure it was the official Norton page).
But it makes the opening noise, shows the apple logo for like 10 seconds.  Then it shows a loading bar that fills up in about 10 seconds, then a second load bar pops up that appears for about 4 or 5 seconds, gets to about 10% full and the computer shuts itself down immediately.
It happens exactly like that every single time.
I had no issues with this computer whatsoever until this suddenly started happening.
I tried holding option button and it popped up a harddrive option.  Being unable to use my mouse on this screen, my only option seemed to be to hit enter and accept, so i did.  It went right back to the 2 loading bars underneath the apple logo before shutting itself down.
I tried unplugging the power cord for 15 seconds (a second time did for 30 seconds) and then back in 5 seconds (second time waited 15 seconds after that) and then starting it up.  Nothing changed.
I tried holding down Command+option+P+R, the only thing that changed was the volume of the startup noise got louder (I understand the reset volume is natural with PRAM resetting).
Computer is about 2 and a half years old.  I don't have much on it backed up either.  Please don't criticize for this decision, I'm aware that I should have had everything backed up.  But if there is ANY way possible to redeem my computer and/or its contents; I am all ears.

My keyboard for whatever reason usually keeps de-activating (just replaced batteries) halfway in the middle of startup, so the Shift key to start up in safe mode doesn't register.

  • IMac shuts down - Is this issue being resolved?

Yes, so I had my this issue with my previous iMac and Apple replaced it with another that shuts down without warning. This second one came with 10.5 pre-installed. I had not even used it for more than 1 hour before it shutdown. It continued to shutdown spontaneously... I decided to reinstall the software and it shut down during each install after about 10 minutes. It took me two days to get software back on the machine. Yes, I did the PRAM and the power management resets. And it shut down again. I just installed the fan control and not have the HDD at 1860 and the CPU at 1760 to keep things cooler. What will happen when it is hot outside?

If it goes into overheat protection mode it goes to sleep and only wakes with the power button, but you won't see the start up animation or here the chime sound. Unless it is scheduled to wake up at a certain time I haven't had a Mac just wake up, so don't let that be your guide. As George said, either way it sounds like a warranty issue, but if you can narrow down exactly what is happening it might make getting that service easier/faster.

  • Shuts down during startup

IMac shut down during use. On startup I get a progress bar on white screen then shuts down again. Any thoughts?

    Hi Eric
When I put in my system DVD (I'm assuming that's the one with the operating system install) there was no change.  I still hear the computer power up, I get the white screen (and now hear the DVD churn), get the Apple logo, get the white bar across the bottom of the screen that shows progress, and then poof, the computer shuts down (with my operating system DVD in it).

  • IMac just shuts down during iDVD build

*4 week old 20 inch iMac just shuts down during iDVD build of a dvd. Its really weird, because it is rendering and encoding and all of a sudden it just shuts down without a know. Then when I turn it back on it ejects the blank dvd out and starts. I had my SuperDrive replaced also like 2 days ago from the apple store. I have pasted the system.log if that helps?*

most likely caused by overheating due to video encoding increasing cpu usage (system freezing and shutdowns is a problem with older intel imacs). monitor your internal temps using an app like istat. temporary workaround is to use an fan control app like imacfancontrol and increase the cpu fan speeds. but this does not actually fix the problem which may arise more periodically as the system gets older.

Check the user accounts via System Prefereces > Users & Groups.
The migration creates a new user account each time it runs, so depending on what it was doing/had done, it might leave a partial user account.

  • Computer shuts down during render/prerender

This was not my original problem but it has occured before and I know it will occur again.
My computer shuts down for no reason when I try to render or prerender video in Adobe Premiere Pro CS4. From what I can tell it is a general issue with premiere that I am having. I have tried multiple video formats, multiple video lengths, and multiple rendering options and I am still getting random shut downs during rendering.
Here are some specs for my computer which is a laptop:
OS: Windows 7 Ultimate (64 bit OS)
Proccessor: Intel Core 2 Duo @ 3.0 ghz
    Ram: 8 gigs of it
    Video: Nvidia Geforce 9600M GT
1 Hard Drive w/ 280 gb of space
As a recap.... My exact problem is that during the rendering or pre rendering proccess my computer simply shuts down as in it turns off.
I can also add that the computer does act strangely leading me to believe that theres some hardware or software incompatibility. While it is rendering I can hear the CPU fan pick up which is usually normal for any rendering application but what I noticed was that it doesnt stop speeding up. Its like if it was going into an overload and I can confirm that at its peak, the computer shuts down.
To add troubles... whenever I pre render any video and it succesfully renders.... Premeire will hang up really really bad if I try to play the pre rendered preview. In otherwords when you preview a video that it pre rendered it usually plays smooth and everything is fine. After I pre render something though and play it I can tell its locking up because the timeline bar is really jumpy and the video playback skips also.
This is the problem I would really love fixed. I usually have to button smash my keyboard until I lock premiere up and then once it unfreezes itself i can preview my work smoothly. This is however like a good 5 mins of my time trying to get the preview to play smoothly though so its really hurting how fast I can work.
If anyone can help me out I would greatly appreciate it. I will be trying to run the same stuff on my older laptop and observe the results. I personally think CS4 is incompatible with windows 7.

If you have a recent nVidia driver installed, you might want to check to see if you have either of these two modules loaded - check in the nVidia console:
PhysX, or 3D Stereovision. If you have them, definitely disable 3D Stereo, and test. If no improvement, disble PhysX and test.
Also, try adjusting your Hardware Acceleration. If Max, set to Min and test. If Min, set to Max and test. If either helps, try incrementing up, or down, until it no longer helps.
Last, check your OpenGL settings. If ON, turn OFF. If OFF, turn ON.
It appears that you have a laptop. Is that correct?
    Good luck,
    Hunt
