Help imorting OLD VHS, dropping frames

Hi I'm trying to import an old concert video I have on VHS and I keep getting dropped frames when I play it back. The tape has some issues, but it plays. I'm importing through my Canon ZR70, when I watch what's coming through the ZR70 there are no issues, it is gettting everything, but I'll lose little seconds here and there on my capture, which obviously with audio sounds like a skip. Any settings, or things I can try to fix this?
Thanks!

Final Cut Pro 4.5

If you are capturing the material directly to the system drive, that's likely your problem. Video puts demands on a drive that the system drive often can't support.
Get a firewire exeternal drive. Recognize that your Canon camera may cause problems if you try to use it in a controlled capture process. I wouldn't think it would be an issue in a non-controllable device capture.
good luck,

  • Please Help *Deadline Coming Up* Dropping Frames

hello everyone. I am getting ready tired. I've burnt this project 9x already. I'm using iMovie 08 and I'm editing on a Macbook with an 500 gig firewire drive. The drive has 230 gigs left so it should have plenty to write a temp file for rendering. I got a Core Duo/ 2 gig proc and 2 gigs of RAM. the video is about 1hr30mins. I've tried reimporting into Garageband to set the chapters because they play back great in iMovie and in Quicktime. They play fine in the Garageband window for the preview under the media tab. then I mark my chapter points and I send to iDVD. this is where I think it's messing up. but once iDVD is up and running I will customize the menu. I've tried leaving Garageband opened while rendering and closing it while iDVD is rendering. I've tried closing every program down and even the task pane up in the right hand corner. i've even turned off Airport. Either way I do it I am either dropping frames like crazy or this last time the video sped up. Audio sounds great on all the DVDs it's just an issue with the video. So it's either speeding up or mostly slowing down. Right now the only other thing I know is to wait 2 hrs for the old iMovie to import the video and do the chapters there (WHICH SHOULD BE LIKE THAT IN THE NEW iMOVIE). I definitely don't get that reasoning from Apple. Let Garageband do it's own thing and leave the video to the video apps. Ok well I'm sorry I'm just trying to beat a schedule.
P.S. was running Leopard and thought it might be an issue so I reformated and reinstalled Tiger. So it's on a fresh machine. all the patches updated for mac os x tiger and all of my apps. I've even tried different hard drives. I was editing on a 250 gig firewire drive and went out thinking this 500 gig would work.

you could probably then leave GB set to stereo since the itnerface wuld like send the (mono) signal to both channels

  • HELP!!! Dropped frames capturing

Please help...Dropped frames while capturing from Canon XL2 to FCP!!!!

    Hi
Can be many things but - as it is a miniDV tape Camera
    • connects via IEEE 1394 also called FireWire
    A. is it recorded by the same Camera ?
    B. is it recorded in SP or LP-mode ?
If recorded in LP-mode - Then You must use same Camera as recorded the tape - That's why I recommend to NEVER use this  - when Camera dies so does the tapes.
I used iMovie HD6 as intermediat tool to capture (as it's not so sencitive to drop-outs as FCE/P) - and this I set to NOT import as individual clips. Then I Copied back to a new tape - BUT this time Camera was set into SP-mode.
Eventually one can do a Camera to Camera Copy with receiving Camera set to SP-mode (but I'm not sure it works) (the new tape I pre-record with just any thing of no importance to get a full continuous Timecode - then I use this to take the Copy)
Why I'm not 100% clear is due to that it is about 10 years ago I had this dilemma.
    Yours Bengt W

  • HELP PLEASE!! Dropped Frames while capturing....lots of them!

We're running Final Cut 5.1, Quicktime 7.4, and OS 10.4.11 on a Dual 2 GHZ PPC G5. We're trying to capture whole tapes with no timecode breaks. However, more often than not :30 to 1:00 min into the capturing process we get a window that pops up stating there were dropped frames. How can we fix this? We are using a Canon XHA1 as a deck, and we've tried capturing to 3 different drives. Two internals, both 7200RPM and an external 7200RPM via firewire 800.
Any ideas? I would really like some help.

QUicktime 7.4 might be the culprit. Many people having issues.
Gotta do an archive and install and get back to QT 7.2.

  • Help changing ProRes to dropped frame.

I need to change a ProRes file to dropped frame. I right clicked the time code but it does not give me the option. I Tried turning the colons to semi-colons. Wondering what else I can do. Any suggestions?

I just figured it out. I created a new sequence with the correct frame rate and then dropped the file in. It converted it to the correct specs. Thank you though.

  • Help needed with drop frames

    Hello everyone,
A few weeks ago with the help of some of the participant on this panel I change my settings and move my scratch disk from my internal HD to the external one.
Since then it seems that I have a lot of drop frames on the video as well as on the audio: and it seems that the problem is worsening.
Any suggestion to try to remedy to this problem will be greatly appreciated.
    Thank you very much.
    Guy.

I guess I have a problem with my external drive (LaCie 250 GB). I was working this afternoon and I noticed that I had a lot of dropped frames in a clip in the viewer and when replaying the same clip the drop frames were not at the same place.
So my question is : what's a good external drive?
This one is about 2Yrs old . Is that an average life time for this kind of material ? or was I unlucky?
Any suggestion on what I should do or try would be gretly appreciated.

  • HELP!  Dropped Frames

I changed my audio/video settings from DV/NTSC to Uncompressed 10 bit in logging VHS into FCP 4.5 HD. I already had footage on the timeline and was told that is a big no no to change in the middle of a project. My question is, how can I get it back to where it was before without having my timeline footage go offline? I changed it back and I'm getting dropped frames during log and capture. I tried copying the clip from the timeline and opening a new project and it went offline. HELP!

Your post is a bit confusing.
I already had footage on the timeline and was told that is a big no no to change in the middle of a project.<<</div>
    Change what...?
I changed it back and I'm getting dropped frames during log and capture.<<</div>
You changed 'what' back?...do you mean you changed your capture settings from 10bit, back to DV?
    Please clarify your procedures.

  • Help Please?  Dropped frames during capture!

Hello everyone, I am capturing from a mini DV camera to FC Express HD using a fire wire. I've been doing this for a year and all the sudden I'm getting a "dropped frame during capture" message.
I have read many many discussion boards and tried all of your suggestions...
Using different camera's, different tapes, different firewire cables. I've uninstalled and reinstalled FC EX HD and Quicktime. I tried turning off my external drives and using the internal drive to capture to and created a FC project within the internal drive. I have plenty of space on all drives.
Does anyone have any other ideas? Nothing seems to be working. I appriecate your help!!!!!

    there any problem still?
I'm really worried now. I turned off the "warn dropped frames" option. After capture, when I playback, I get a warning that there are dropped frames, and then picture freezes. Help! I don't know what to do!

  • Jumpy timeline, dropped frames - please help!

I am experiencing a persistent problem with a jumpy timeline that surges forward - (it looks like dropped frames). I have all of my media on an external hardrive with 160 GB to spare, I have formatted that HD as Mac OS extended "Journaled". I have made RT as "Safe" and video quality as "dynamic", frame rate as "dynamic". It seems to be unnoticable when I reduce the size of the canvas to below 50% but at that point I am going cross-eyed in trying to decipher the picture on the screen.
    Question 1:
Do I need to reformat my HD without " Journalled" or is this not a problem?
Any other ideas how to resolve?
    Question 2:
What is Pulldown Pattern and what setting is best for my project (720 x 480 DV/DVCPRO - NTSC 29.97 fps)?
Any help in these matters would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

    Thanks for your suggestions.
All in all, I tried everything but to no avail. i suspect that in my trying to figure out solutions, i may have made some illogical formatting/preferences for my media and project on the hole. I ended up just starting from scratch with a new project, rudimentary preferences, imported my media - and it has been perfect ever since.

  • 30p with a Canon XA10 - need help with Final Cut 7 "FIELD DOMINANCE" setting and an explanation of "drop frames". Thank you!!

I shot footage using a Canon XA10 and there are issues with the HD quality not looking as crisp as it should.  I am trying to make sure the settings in Final Cut are right.  Need help confirming what should be in "Field Dominance" --- have seen discussions about making sure it's set to "none" but I'm confused as to what to do.
Also someone suggested I use "drop frames" to change from 30p to 24p within Final Cut.  He couldn't explain how to do it so any input appreciated as well as any thoughts on whether this is a good option to try.

If you're shooting 30p, field dominance should be set to none.   Since you need to use log and transfer to bring this material in to fcp, I would assume it would be set correctly automatically.  Are you sure you've set the camera properly?
Drop frames will not change 30 p to 24p.   Dropframe timecode simply refers to the number assigned to each frame which drops an occasional number (not any frames) so the timecode duration is the actual duration, since 30p videoi is actually 29.97 frames per second which each frame assigned a timecode number.
This is very basic video stuff and requires some basic knowledge of video.  Wikipedia is a pretty good resource for much of this stuff plus there are lots of great resources on the web.  Look up interlaced and progressive video, 24p and 30p.
And as far as judging quality, you can only get an accurate view of the quality in fcp when you have a video card attached to a video monitor.  The viewer and canvas are only an approximation of what the quality is.  Minimally, set the canvas or viewer to 100% to get a better approximation of the quality.

  • PLEASE HELP (Dropping Frames

Alright bare with me I know nothing about the program seeing how I just downloaded it. I'm using a Canon Rebel T1i as my video camera and am currently trying to shoot a music video. The video files come in as .mov files and when I edit them in Final Cut the dropping frame window would come up every second.
After several attempts I converted the videos to Mp4g and when I played the file in FCS it actually played until I added an effect and rendered then the frames would drop again pleaseeeeeee help me.
I have a Black Macbook 2.2 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
    ATAPI
but Im running FCP off of an external hard drive with 900G free
Im new to this whole professional editing and any help would be greatly appriciated

Ok, I think I can tell you what the problem is:
Im running FCP off of an external hard drive with 900G free
Bad Idea.  You want FCP running off your system drive because it's going to be much faster and you don't want to be both running FCP of that drive AND trying to process data.  Basically you are telling your external drive to work twice as hard and that's going to kill FCP performance.  You just won't have enough connection bandwith to push your application data AND your video data through.  You are lucky you aren't crashing the program, to be honest.
FCP should be installed and running from your internal hard drive.  Move other, less critical apps and data to your external drive.
Second, what type of external hard drive are you running?  If it's USB 2.0 it's probably not going to be fast enough.  USB 2.0 has about a 400mbps connection speed (400 million bits ber second) and firewire 400 has a similar data rate.
You want a Firewire 800 external hard drive plugged into your firewire 800 port and the drive should only be crunching video data.
Fix these two problems and it should work a LOT better, but still expect long conversion/compression times if you are running a Core 2 DUO.
One other note:  If you are connecting your camera to your firewire port and can't connect your external hard drive at the same time (like me), just dump your captured video data to a folder on your system drive, then disconnect the camera, plug in your firewire 800 drive, then copy your video files and projects to the external drive.  Yeah, it takes 2 steps and is a bit of a pain, but it should work a lot better.
    Hope this helps!
    Louis
Oh, a couple of other notes:  I am new to this too, but I have learned a TON over the last month.  You don't need an excessive amount of internal hard drive space to capture SDV video.  I can capture 60 minutes of SDV video and it takes up about 8GB.  Figure 16GB for a motion picture's worth of data.  This you can work with on your internal drive (make space if you have to!!!).  However, when you go to turn your project into uncompressed frames for DVD authoring your files are going to get HUGE.  Make sure your ouput directories in FCP are set to your external drive (your "originals" can stay on your system drive).  Unconpressed files can reach 50-100GB or more.  900GB is plenty if you want to do a feature length film.
However, if you are working in HDV (high def) you can expect files close to twice the size on both drives.  I am not sure if a core 2 duo can do HDV to be honest, but it's worth a shot.  I know nothing about HDV because I am working solely in SDV.
One other note that just saw:  You are doing this on a MacBook?  You really want the video card of a Macbook Pro for rendering.  You should still be able to do it, but it's going to be slow.  Snow Leopard (theoretically) should make better use of your hardware, but I can't prove that.

  • Final Cut Pro 4.5 & Dropped Frames..Please Help

I am a wedding videographer and have been using Final Cut Pro with no problems for several video projects. My most current project however problems arise. I am using Mac OS X 10.4.9 with 512 MB of Ram on a G5 1.8 Single. When I try importing video from my last wedding when I capture it I always am getting a message saying dropped frames were present. I have tried 2 different camcorders, 2 different firewire cables, defragmenting my hard drive and still nothing but dropped frames messages. I also have tried importing video from a previous wedding with no luck. If anyone has any ideas please help. Thanks

FCP 4.5 and Mac OS 10.4.9 are incompatible...known issue.
#45 - FCP 4.5 and Mac OS 10.4.9 - how to get it working again
Shane's Stock Answer #45 - How to get FCP 4.5 working again under Mac OS 10.4.9
Apple's solution: Archive and install the OS again, this time updating only to 10.4.8.
Another COOL solution: Samba2007 posted that a friend solved the FCP 4.5 + OSX 10.4.9 capture issue adding the Capture Scratch folder to the Privacy of Spotlight in this thread:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=4417320#4417320
OlSchoolCutter tried with SUCCESS (see post in that thread).
Then follow these stepe and try (it's free!):
    1. From the Apple menu, choose System Preferences.
    2. From the View menu, choose Spotlight.
    3. Click the Privacy tab to reveal the areas that Spotlight will not index.
    4. In the Finder, open your "Final Cut Pro Documents" folder.
    5. Drag the Capture Scratch folder into Spotlight's list.

  • HELP, still getting dropped frames!

I'm still receiving dropped frames on my capture, which throws my audio wildly out of sync.
This is an FCP 3.0 running on a 10.4.9 Mac OS X computer, a G5.
    I have:
Switched from both Safe RT to Unlimited RT.
Made sure there aren't multiple firewire drives plugged in.
Captured directly to my internal hard drive (as opposed to my external G-Raid)
    Switched cameras.
    Switched mini-DVs.
(I've also done that thing where you go into User Preferences, Go to Spotlight, Click on Privacy and drag your capture folder into the bin...which didn't work)
I've concluded it must not be the camera itself if two different cameras are both dropping frames, probably some setting in FCP I don't know about.
If anyone can help, I'd really appreciate it, Thanks.

SInce you list an iMac as your computer your options are limited as the usual fix for this problem is adding a second firewire bus and you can't do that with the imac.
But to clear something up, earlier you wrote...
Sorry, I'm running my camera through the firewire device....and capturing all the media to my internal hard drive.
The only hope you have is that you can capture directly to the system drive. To do this, just plug the camera into the computers FW port. Disconnect any other FW devices including the external drive.
If that works you can transfer the footage to the FW drive after capture.
Might also try the spotlight fix again although I don't know how it works if the scratch drive is your system drive.

  • Dropping frames, generally not playing. Please help, URGENT.

    Hi,
Sorry to anyone who's seen this question under a different category, but I have to do a presentation tomorrow and I'm freaking out that this doesn't work, I wasn't quite sure what program's fault it was.
I have a .mov file that was encoded from Final Cut (h.264) on a mac pro running Tiger and QT version 7.5.5 and is a .mov file
I am trying to play it on a G4 PowerBook running 10.3.9, QT version 7.4 and it wont play the movie, it keeps dropping frames and generally playing very shakily and sometimes crashing, I tried it on a G4 I-Mac (with the same specs) too, and its the same problem. Therefore I can only presume that it must be something to do with the OS, or the QT version or something else entirely maybe.
Thanks loads to anyone who can help
    Sam

QuickTime Player is designed to drop frames if the viewing machine is too underpowered for full frame rate playback.
H.264 Video codec demands a fast machine. No doubt your Final Cut export used a very high data rate and the G4 machines just can't keep up.
