HELP! Import iPhoto 4 pics from external drive into iPhoto 5

I had computer issues so cleared my hard drive which was with iPhoto 4
Moved the entire iPhoto Library to my external.
When they updated my software they used the 5 version.
Now I am having issues getting iPhoto 5 to recognize my data.
I have tried various way indicated... but each one presents with a different problem.
* If I pull them directly from the External drive to the Photo finder window - then when I open iPhoto i get the spinning wheel for HOURS (quit after 12).
* If I drag them directly to Iphoto (either the entire folder OR year by year)
They do show up in iPhoto, however, in iPhoto ALL dates are the date I pulled the iPhoto Library onto my External drive. Also, when in iPhoto there are film roles, however, the events are mixed up.
I have tried this about 10 times, all different ways, my latest is now it imports them in DUPLICATE (and I had deleted teh thumb files prior to import)
My question:
How do I pull my iPhoto 4 library into iPhoto 5 and KEEP proper fiilm roles to include 1) Correct pictures in each 2) correct dates and 3) preserve the role titles 4) not duplicated
HELP!!!
THANKS!

Here are some instructions from Apple in iPhoto Help that explain how to switch from your normal iphoto library (on your internal drive) to your older iphoto library (on your external drive:
"You can switch from the photo library you're currently working on to another one you've already created.
1.Quit iPhoto.
2.Rename your current iPhoto Library folder in the Finder or move it to a new location on your hard disk, and then open iPhoto.
3. Tip: If you don't want to rename or move your current iPhoto Library folder, hold down the Option key while opening iPhoto.
4. Click Find Library.
5. Choose the library you want to display.
6. Click Open.
The library appears in the iPhoto viewing area."
If you succeed in doing this, you can thus direct your iphoto 5 program to open the iphoto 4 library on your external. If this succeeds, iphoto 5 will automatically convert that library to iphoto 5. Then you can burn your external drive iphoto 5 library to CD or DVD using the "burn" function from within iphoto. It is best if you can fit everything on one CD or DVD, but if not, you can burn by album, or by roll, or even by date. Make sure you burn this disk (or these disks) from within iphoto 5. Then, following the above instructions again, revert back to your internal drive iphoto 5 library. Then, while iphoto is running, insert those CDs/DVDs you burned from within iphoto earlier and when you do, each will appear inside iphoto along with your other albums. Each CD or DVD, as you insert it, will look like another album. You can then import those into your existing internal drive library. Unless you hhave many thousands of photos, this should not take a long time.
By the way, if ALL your photos are in that external drive iphoto library, you can first quit iphoto and then you can drag it over and replace your internal drive iPhoto Library with the external drive iPhoto Library. Then iPhoto 5 will convert the older library automatically when it starts up.
Before doing any of these things, I suggest backing up all your photos to something safe as if there is some corruption in your original library, it could get mangled in a way that makes it unusable and then you'll need that backup.
I have actually done what I have descriibed above. We have an older iMac G3 with iPhoto 4. We got my daughter a new iMac G5 which came with iPhoto 5. I copied over her iPhoto Library from the iMac G3 which had been running iPhoto 4, and when she started iPhoto 5 for the first time on the new iMac, it converted everything in the old iPhoto Library (created under iPhoto 4) to iPhoto 5.
You would only need the CDs/DVDs if you have two libraries you want to merge, one being an iPhoto 4 Library, and the other being an iPhoto 5 Library.
There is a guy named "Old Toad" who sometimes comments in this forum. He probably has a better way of doing this.

  • Import still pics from video camera into iphoto with firewire?

I have a new panasonic pv-gs250. Although it is PC based, I was able to bypass their software and use imovie by attaching a 4 to 6 firewire to the dv port. It imported the movieclips with no problem. When I changed the mode on the camera from replay movie mode, to view pics mode (it can take stills on an sd card), it said that there was no cable connected. I tried using iphoto and importing from there, but it says there's not cable connected. There has to be a simple solution to this! Please help. thanks.
    powerbook G4   Mac OS X (10.0.x)

So, just to be sure, I used the USB cord and opened iphoto. Briefly, under sources, it said it was reading the Panasonic. I got up and when I came back, the Panasonic source was gone, and it said I couldn't close the window because it was importing files. Nothing new has shown up in the library yet. I also don't see anything counting down the loading, or importing. Do you think it's working, but just slow? Or is it having a hard time adjusting to the non-mac compatible thing, and it can't be done? thanks.

My Mac crashed. I got a new hard drive. I reinstalled Lightroom. Fortunately ircats are stored on an external drive. How do I import all of the old catalogues from external drive into a new LR catalogue. I have done it before. It has just been many years and I can't recall how.

If you had stored your catalog files on an external drive, then all you have to do is double-click on them to open them and use them.
Or you could move them to the internal drive and double-click on them once the move is completed.
To create a single catalog file from multiple ones, you could use File->Import from Another Catalog

Are you trying to open an audio file in GarageBand or a GarageBand project?
To open an audio file drag it from your NAS to a real-instrument track in GarageBand.

  • Can't read iPhoto library from external drive

I suddenly can't can't read iPhoto library from external drive. I have talked to WD and nohing is wrong with the network drive. I can open images and files from it. But, I can't read in iPhoto Library.

    Network Drive? a NAS?
iPhoto needs to have the Library sitting on disk formatted Mac OS Extended (Journaled). Users with the Library sitting on disks otherwise formatted regularly report issues including, but not limited to, importing, exporting, saving edits and sharing the photos.
Basically, you need to move the library to a correctly formatted disk.

  • Cant import raw files from sony rx1003 into iPhoto

Cant import raw files from sony rx1003 into iPhoto.  with rx1002 no problem! any suggestions?

Every model of a manufacture's camera have a different  RAW format and, therefore, you'll have to wait until Apple receives the necessary information from Sony so they can create a RAW Compatibility Updater that includes that model.
In the meantime you can try the Adobe RAW converter with might support that camera model to create a dmg file that iPhoto will recognize and begging shooting the highest resolution jpegs until the updater is released.

  • Moving photos from external drive to iPhoto '11

OK. I'm going nuts. I recently purchased an iMac and I migrated all of the photos from my old G5 with no problems. All of my photos and their Album structures came along. Now, I also have a lot of different photos on a MacBook that is also running 10.6.6 and iPhoto '11. The MacBook is backed up onto an external drive which I am trying to use to move the photos to the iMac. I have tried what Terrence Devlin suggests. I tried to drag the MacBook iPhoto library into the iMac Pictures folder, but it asks me if I want to replace the existing iPhoto library. I most certainly do not. I don't want to lose anything that is already on the iMac.
I tried manually exporting folders from the external drive by clicking individual albums in iPhoto and "exporting" them to the iMac desktop, but not all of the photos come in the export, no matter which folder I try to export.
Yesterday, before I updated the laptop to iPhoto '11, I created a new iPhoto Library on the iMac and dragged the entire iPhoto Library from the MacBook into that new Library. It worked, however it all came over into one big album and my previous album structure was gone. There are waaaaay too many photos for me to go back through and sort them again. Did that happen because I was going from an older version of iPhoto to a newer version or will it happen again if I drag the MacBook iPhoto Library into a NEW library on the iMac? (I only ask before I try because it took several hours the first time.)
So what do I do? I want all of my photos on the iMac with my existing Album structure. If I have to do it Album by Album fine, but how? Selecting every photo from an album and dragging it to a folder on the desktop doesn't work either. I can always take every photo minus one. Weird.
    Thanks,
    John

What you want to do is merge the two Libraries? The only way to do this is to use the paid ($20) version of iPhoto Library Manager
I created a new iPhoto Library on the iMac and dragged the entire iPhoto Library from the MacBook into that new Library. It worked, however it all came over into one big album and my previous album structure was gone
Never import one Library to another. Every version and thumbnail is imported like a distinct photo, you lose all your Albums, Keywords etc., the link between Original and Previews is destroyed, the non-destructive editing feature is ruined and so on. In summary: it's mess.

  • Importing pics from the internet into iphoto

Hello, my 8 year old daughter has to do a presentation on Holland.. so I thought
that I would help her with technology!! We are trying to make a slideshow of pictures from holland, I found a bunch of pics on a website that are perfect.. I dragged the pics into iphoto, put them in order.. but when I begin the slideshow, the pictures (which appear very clear when they are small) get very blurred when they fit the size of the screen. How Can I fix this? Is it possible?
I do not mind leaving the pictures smaller so that they are clearer.. please advise

If the pictures you imported were small photos to begin with, they will be blurry when they enlarge because there is not enough information to make them clear at such a size. These are called "thumbnails," they are low-resolution and only look good when condensed to a small size. Find larger photos and try again with them. You might try clicking on the small photos when you find them on a webpage, sometimes that will load a higher-resolution version of the photo, and you can drag this into iPhoto instead of the thumbnail. Good luck to you and your daughter.

    Hi,
The Canon S100 wasn't supported until version 6.6 of camera raw and that isn't supported by pse 8.
You options are to either upgrade to pse version 10 or use the DNG converter

  • Help: Can't import old imovies from external drive unless I save on iMac

Forgive me, I have read the similar questions in this forum, but I still need help.
I made a great number of movies using the old imovie HD, and then saved all of them on my external hard drive. When I open up imovie 08 and look at the event library, it lists my hard drive with that yellow warning triangle and exclamation point on it (What does that mean?). Naturally, the old movies don't show up, so I try to import them manually. When I do, the new movies get imported on my imac. Is there any way for the imported movies to remain on the external drive? And should I be worried about the warning triangle? I should add that the external drive is a "My Book" that was originally used on a PC, and has also been used on my imac for the last 12 months with no issue.
Thanks to all for your help.

+I should add that the external drive is a "My Book" that was originally used on a PC+
Then it is probably still formatted as a FAT partition, which has file size limitations that make it unsuitable for storing movies. You can check with "Disk Utility". For best results when used exclusively on a Mac, you should convert it to the Mac Journaled HFS file system with Disk Utility. The conversion will erase anything currently on the drive, so you will have to temporarily move the contents to another location.

  • How to move iPhoto Library from external drive to new mac?

I have exported a copy of my iPhoto Library from my old mac to an external hard drive. How can I import entire library into iPhoto of new mac? When I click Import to Library, I'm unable to highlight iPhoto Library file listed on my external hard drive in Finder. Any suggestions? Thanks.

Is the iPhoto library on the new computer empty? If it is, quit iPhoto and just drag the iPhoto library on the New Computer to the trash and drag the iPhoto library from the EHD to the pictures folder on the new computer - there is no importing involved - you NEVER want to import an iPhoto library into another iPhoto Library
If you want to run the new computer with the iPhoto library on the external drive simply launch i{Photo while depressing the option (alt) key and use the select library to point to the EHD

  • Import iTunes Library from External Drive to New Computer with Vista

I can't seem to "import" my entire iTunes library from my external hard drive to my new computer. However, I can import songs one-by-one. There must be a way to transfer the whole file at once but it is beyond me. Anyone have a solution?

Hi I am new and have found a way to import Files & Folders over my home network and or other drives.
Start in File, click "Add File to Library", or "Add Folder to Library". In the “look in” dropdown window, locate the File or folder and double click on it. It should begin to transfer. I have never transferred an enter library though.
    On a personal note,
I have come to realize that I can only transfer iTunes music. I can not transfer or even find the music that I have installed from a CD into my iTunes library. iTunes dose recognize even the folder that such music is in. If any of you have an answer to this problem let me know.
    Thanks

  • Can't read iPhoto library from external drive via airport extreme base stat

I can't seem to open my iPhoto library from my external USB drive that is hooked and being shared through my airport extreme base station. If I plug the external drive directly to my mac via USB it works but not when going through the base station.
This only started happening when I upgraded from iLife'06 to iLife'08.
Anyone have any ideas on how to fix?

That's a problem that many are posting about. Haven't read of a solution yet. Be sure to report the problem to Apple at: http://www.apple.com/feedback/iphoto.html.
    Do you Twango?
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've written an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 08 libraries. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.

  • Can't import .mov files from my camera into iPhoto

I am not able to import .mov files from my kodak camera into iPhoto. It says the file is not readable. Also, if there are any photos after the video file, those are said to be unreadable too, even if I select just the photots for import. I tried to import the .mov file with image capture as well, and that gave me an import error also. I can view the file fine on my camera and iPhoto and image capture both will give me the properties of the video file but will not import. I have imported .miv files before with no trouble. I have tried several different files with the same results. Even tried different memory cards. Not sure how to get this file on my computer or why there is a problem all of the sudden.
    Thanks.

    Welcome to Apple Discussions,
What model of Kodak is it?
There is a discussion thread on this topic: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=11942367&#11942367
Try using a media card reader (sometimes built into printers) to see if that allows the import. Others seem to report having luck by importing the movies off the card using a different computer, deleting them, and then importing the pictures.
    Hope that helps.

  • Importing iTunes library from external drive

Cannot play iTunes after importing library from PC into Mac.

    Simply highlight and delete
But doing so it will also trash all  playlists, data added, ratings, etc.  Something the OP said about having to rename lots of files during a previous library rebuild suggests to me they may even be stored in WAV format.  If the OP deletes them from the library all the labels will be lost, they will get added back with only file names as track information and they will have to be renamed again.
This will delete not only the reference to the file, but the library.itl file that Limnos refers to.
I don't think so.  The file will still be there, it will just be stripped of any entries.
Now you should have an empty iTunes.
Now go to where the files are on your external drive. Two options. Choose the one you prefer:
In iTunes, go to >> Preferences >> Advanced -- Select the location of your files on the external drive. Tick OK and iTunes should re-add all the files. Depending on how many, it may take some time as it organises everything. But your files will remain on the ext drive. Any new songs you get will get added to your external drive by default now.
Changing this preference setting will not get iTunes to inventory the files in the media folder, nor add them.  It simply tells iTunes to put any new media added in the location selected.
Or, select the files on your ext drive, hold down OPTION and drag the files into iTunes. It will add them to your library, but leave the files on your external drive. Note that any new files you add directly to iTunes (like from the store) will be added to your default iTunes folder, not the external drive.
Well, yes, it will do it, essentially creating a brand new library that the OP will have to organize again vs. using the existing organization. My reservations about the need to rebuild the library from scratch still exist.
If the OP desires to keep storing media on the external drive in the long run it is best simply changing the preferece to use the external drive for media storage.
