Help, important, external hardrive question
so im putting all my stuff on this external harddrive to transfer it from my dell to my macbook that comes in on fri i think. and im selling the dell tonight so i wont be able to go back and redo anything
the harddrive is in ntfs, will i be able to drag and drop my files to the mac from the drive?
KJK's idea of burning to CD also has its own pitfall, though not a bad idea. Many CD burning software aren't specific as to which format and may use UDF instead of the more standard ISO 9660. Make sure yours uses ISO 9660 before doing the CD burning route. Otherwise you'll probably need Software Architect's ReadDVD which supports most if not all UDF formats. But that's an extra cost for an uncertain ability to read.
On the other hand, if you installed one of the new solutions for running Windows, and added MacDrive (a commercial software), you'd get the files over that way. My FAQ here links to several of the popular ways to run Windows on Intel Macs including Boot Camp and Parallel Workstation:

External Hardrive questions (particularly with iPhoto)
I want to keep my external hd organized and I also want to delete some photos from my iPhoto to free up some space on the internal hd. I started to organize but then realized I wasn't sure how it all works. I guess my question is when I back up my computer on an external hd, does it save iPhoto exactly as it is, organized as it is in the iPhoto program? If that is true and I delete photos from my iPhoto library and then back up on the external, all of the photos will still be on my external drive, correct? (unless I delete them manually myself from the external hardrive).
Also, is this all different than backing up via Time Machine?
If someone has answers to these questions, I would love to hear. I'm just trying to figure out the best way of going about this. I would appreciate any knowledge on the subject.
I have a Macbook Pro OS Extended. My external hard rive is a Seagate 1 TB.It depends on how you're backing up.
Most Simple Back Up:
Drag the iPhoto Library from your Pictures Folder to another Disk. This will make a copy on that disk.
Slightly more complex: Use an app that will do incremental back ups. This is a very good way to work. The first time you run the back up the app will make a complete copy of the Library. Thereafter it will update the back up with the changes you have made. That makes subsequent back ups much faster. Many of these apps also have scheduling capabilities: So set it up and it will do the back up automatically.
Example of such apps: Chronosync - but there are many others. Search on MacUpdate or the App Store
In the first of these cases, then yes, nothing is deleted from the back up.
In the second of these cases, then everything can be kept - if you set the app doing the back up to do so. So, it depends on the app you use and the settings of that app.
Time Machine
Time Machine keeps a rolling back up with the ability to revert, but this is space limited. So, once you fill the back up drive things will be deleted. SO if you delete something from your Library it will eventually be deleted from the Time Machie back up. How soon? Depends on the size of your back up drive. -
Using my external hardrive question!
Ok, so I'm a little computer challenged and probably not nearly as knowledgeable as most of the people here. Anyway, I'm sorry if my question sounds stupid! I bought a 250GB external hardrive today to back up all my music and pictures. When I plugged it in, it automaticaly opened Time Machine and asked if I wanted to backup my computer on it, so I hit yes. Now, my question is, if I unplug it from my computer, will it rebackup everything again when I plug it back in? I also looked around in it and was unable to find all my music and pictures so I copied all that onto the external hardrive again. This is probably a really stupid question, but I'm paranoid! Thanks!

Were you using Finder to look around the drive or did you use the Time Machine program?
If you gave Time Machine enough time to actually do the backup, and left it on for a couple of hours, you should be able to see several restore times that you can go back to. To see music files - launch iTunes first, then Time Machine. To see iPhoto picture library files - launch iPhoto first, then Time Machine. To see emails - launch Mail first, then Time Machine.
For other files in folders or on your desktop you just go to the folder where the file used to be, and then launch Time Machine. You can also get back different versions of the same file, based on when it was re-added to the Time Machine backup. Everytime a file changes, Time Machine makes another copy of it.

So I need to back up my time machine and I have 1T external but I partioned it a long time ago into 2 section. 1 for time machine the other
for my art work. I need more space for time machine so how can I make my external just 1 hardrive again aka just 1T. Instead

im having trouble with syncing my ipod touch with my itunes library that i keep on a external hardrive. when i plug up my external hardrive that has all my songs on it, it doesn't sync to my ipod correctly. i have to copy and paste the songs to my ipod device when its connected. i dont want all the songs on there and i want to be able to manually control whats on my ipod. and id like to take some songs off of the ipod also but i want them still in my itunes library though. i usually check the songs i want on the ipod but it isnt working that way maybe because its a external hardrive?? i never had a problem with past ipods with my library on itunes but i ran out of space on my computer and had to transfer all of the songs to my external hardrive. please someone help me!! i thought it would be simple! but it isnt the case! i plug up my hardrive then my ipod, i press sync and nothing gets transfered unless i copy and paste them to the ipod. even though it says ipod syncing in progress! this is really confusing! please help me!! sorry if this is jumbled up and confusing..
Correct. When you update via iTunes all synced media that is not in your iTunes library will be lost.

Ipod not recognized when using an external hardrive, please help me!
I have a 4 gig ipod mini, I have been using it for over a year with no problems. recently, my computer will not recognize my ipod when it is plugged in with my external hardrive. I have chosen to keep all of my music on a 100 gig external hardrive, because I have a lot of it. when I plug my ipod into my computer and run Itunes my computer will recognize my ipod, open itunes and then the program will freeze. i can also plug in my external hardrive and when i do my ipod is not recognized by the computer at all. I have tried, numerous scans of both hardrives, multiple updates, new USB cords, I have the most current version of itunes and yet I come to see no results, if you know anything please help me, I don't know what else to do.

Our computer is REALLY low on memory...we will get a new one at some point but can't at the moment.
Upgraded to the new iphone 4s and bought an external hardrive so I could move my Itunes library to that, so I could update iphone/itunes (isn't enough memeory on PC to do this)
I read that I need to consolidate my itunes first but again when I tried to do this it said not enough computer memory.
Anyway I tried to move the itunes folder over to hardrive and then it looked like it had worked. Clicked on itunes via the external and it opened ituens up..brilliant I thought!Backed my old iphone up and then clicked update...then a m,essage came up saying not enough memeory on comouter to update.
Is this because i need to delete itunes off the computer?
Am worried in case it isn't on the hard drive correctly and will lose everything!You would be better off to go through and uninstall programs you no longer need or use and move your data over to the external drive, at least temporarily. The iOS update file will be somewhere around 700MB. If your system has less than 20% free disk space, you're pushing the limits even without trying to download something that large and back up your phone so the update can process. If you're running less than 10% disk space you've entered dangerous waters no matter what you're doing.
This really isn't iPhone related and we can't advise you as to what data and applications you can move or delete. You will have to make that determination yourself or get a friend or family member to help.
If you do not have a current backup of your computer system, you need to make one. NOW! -
I am trying to import aperture library from macbook to new imac the import window sees the external harddrive but does nt see library. I can open library as a refernce library but cannot import onto hardrive as managable files
I may be misreading what you are trying to do but you don't import libraries via the import window. You use File->Import->Library..
If this doesn't resolve your problem post back with more detail of what you are doing and what is happening.

I have a firewire desktop Lacie external hardrive. I used it on my iBook with no problems. I then tried to plug it into my iMac g4, and it didn't show up as a drive. In the apple system profiler, it said nothing was plugged into my firewire port. BUT, in the disk utilities, it DID show up as LaCie. I read the manual and tried calling costumer service for lacie, but the number is not working. I do not think it is a problem with the drive (cause it worked on the ibook). I am quite frustrated. Can anyone offer any help?
It does indeed show up in disk utilities, but I do not know anything about disk utilities. Should I just click erase? I am a bit aprehensive to do so :/. If this aprehension is unjustified, then please let me know, I am willing to try anything that will not ruin this drive (it is now empty, so no problems there)
And yes, unfortunately I have checked the cables, and I have read EVERYTHING on the disk that was included, and no luck. I do not have a network, so I would not knwo how to go about chekcing your other possibility, but I doubt it would show up if it wont even recognize the disk on the system profiler on THIS computer. I guess what Im most perterbed by is that it does indeed show up in disk utility, but NO WHERE else. If it didn';t how up anywhere, I know that for some reason the computer just can't recognize the drive, but it obviously does know that its connected. And it can't be the fire wire or the port, because I've used the port and wire fro soemthing else (connecting the ibook to the imac) and it worked perfectly. Boy, how frusterating. -

Need help setting up external hardrive to play itunes on 2nd Mac
I have my main music collection on my Mac Pro (400 gigs). I want to be able to use my Mac Mini downstairs to play my itunes collection. I have attempted the following steps without success:
Using my Mac Pro, I formatted a 2TB Seagate drive into two partitions (one to use as timemachine back up for the Mac Mini) the other to copy my itunes collection to.
I copied my entire itunes folder onto that Seagate hardrive partition which I named :"Mac mini Itunes"
plugged in seagate hardrive to the mac mini
Opened itunes using the hold option button to choose the iTunes library on the external hardrive
When I chose the iTunes folder located in that "mac mini iTunes" hard drive icon on my desktop, I get the following message:
"The iTunes Library file is locked, on a locked disk, or you do not have permission for this file"
When I go to the Sharing and Permissions info on that "mac mini Itunes" hard drive icon, it shows "You can only read"
Below that I see that the Name and privilege info is grayed out and I can not change anything.
The Ignore ownership on this volume is checked but grayed out and I can not change it.
Any suggestions on how I can use this hardrive to play my iTunes collection on my mac mini?
Do I need to reformat the Seagate drive and do something different while partitioning the drive?
Should I reformat it using the mac mini instead of the Mac Pro and then copy my iTunes folder to it?

For your described network configuration, you will want to reconfigure your 802.11n AirPort Express Base Station (AXn) as a "wireless client" to the Buffalo wireless router.
Here's how ...
Either connect to the AX's wireless network or connect directly, using an Ethernet cable, to the Ethernet port of the AX, and then using the AirPort Utility in "Manual Setup" mode, make the following changes:
(Note: As a third option, you can temporarily connect the AXn directly to an available LAN port on your Buffalo wireless router during setup, and then, place it at the desired location when complete.)
AirPort > Base Station
o Base Station Name: <rename or leave default>
o Base Station Password: <enter desired password>
o Verify Password: <re-enter desired password>
o Remember this password in my keychain: (optional)
o Set time automatically: (unchecked)
AirPort > Wireless
o Wireless Mode: Join a wireless network
o Network Name: <existing Buffalo's wireless network>
o Wireless Security: <select the encryption type of the existing wireless network>
o Wireless Password: <enter the existing wireless network password>
o Verify Password: <re-enter the existing wireless network password>
Music
o Enable AirTunes (checked)
o iTunes Speaker Name: <enter desired speaker name>

o Click Update to write the new settings to the AX
In iTunes:
iTunes > Preferences... > Advanced > General
o Look for remote speakers connected with AirTunes (checked) -
I bought a external HD for my mac and everytime i turn on my computer, all the contents of my Macintosh HD folder are copied into my external hardrive. This takes up alot of space. WHAT DO I DO??????? HOW DO I STOP THIS?????
<Edited by Moderator>Well, to start exactly what is making the copies? Does the copying begin immediately after you start up? Have you checked your Login Items in the Accounts preferences to see what applications you've set up there to run at startup? What software have you recently installed that was for backup? What is the external drive model? Does it have automatic backup software installed on it?
You've done something to cause this to happen, so you need to think about what you've recently done that would cause it. -
ITunes Music Folder will not play from external hardrive after setting the correct path
I've decided to try and create some more space for my music collection and decided to keep my entire iTunes library on a portable external hardrive. I researched how to do so online and was successful at first. I set the correct path from the advanced menu so that iTunes would recognize and save music to the folder on my HD. It worked fine last night, but today when I try and access it I get the, "could not be used because the original file could not be found. Would you like to locate it?" error message when I try and play a song anywhere in iTunes. I then tried to import the library from my external hardrive and then everything was duplicated. I some how reversed the duplication by using time machine and then redownloading iTunes, which is a riduculous story in itself, but thankfully, I am back at square one.
I have over 24,000 songs with a majority of them rated as well as playlists I do not want to lose. I don't understand why it will not play the songs. Can anyone help me?If you are going to have the library on an ext HD the transfer the entire iTunes folder. This way you capture all the files - not just the music.
Launch iTunes with the 'option' key down and follow the dialog - tell iTunes to open the iTunes library file on the ext HD and things should be ok.

I just came home to mix a little and ran into a new problem.

When I went to open some sessions on my hardrive (same hardrive I've been using for a few months) I get this message,
"This session is saved on a volume set to TRANSFER only. If permitted, set the volumes in question to "P" (playback) or "R" (record) in the Workspace.
Otherwise, choose OK to save a copy of this session and its media to a valid playback volume. The session copy will automaically open from the chosen location."
Please help, I don't understand how i get this error all of a sudden.
How do I change teh workspace to record?

Request the info (-i) check the "ownership and permissions" in the bottom of the info panel that pops up.

External hardrive/time machine
Hello,
I am a little new to the imac world.
I am a photographer and have lots and lots of files that need to be backed up without me having to worry if I am going to loose them or not.
I am confused right now by having to do this manually.
Can you guys recomend a good/big external hardrive that will work with both pc's and macs? and that will hold up thousands and thousands of raw files?
Also I am trying to figure out how to set up time machin and I am not sure how, can anyone give me some advice on this? will it save EVERYTHING stored on my mac? I want to make sure all files on Finder, Aperture, iphoto, imovie etc are all backed up into time machine.

DelfinaFirst, if you wish to share the external drive across platforms, it cannot be formatted for Mac (HFS+) or Windows (NTFS).
Common formats are FAT32 and exFAT (aka FAT64).
FAT32 will work with Mac and Windows systems back into the mists of time. However, the format has a limit of around 4GB per file, which may be a problem.
exFAT works with later versions of Snow Leopard and subsequent, and with current Windows systems (I believe it can be added to XP too). There is no file size limit (for all practical purposes).
In your case I would suggest a minimum 2TB drive formatted exFAT if both your systems support it. (NOTE; format the drive on the Windows machine and check it works satisfactorily on both before commiting important files to it).
Getting the files there will require third-party software if you wish to do scheduled incremental backups, but there could be problems there if the contents are modified on Windows and the drive subsequently backed up from the Mac.
I would endorse the idea of using a multiple drive station either directly connected or NAT, with a mirrored pair of drives. I wouldn't use a striped array.
Time machine cannot be used in this way - it needs to be formatted for Mac only. It will back up selected categories, including the entire drive if you so specify, but it's not intended for use as a storage drive - restoring files from TM should be done within the TM environment.

Note that you'll need a HD at least twice the size of the internal for best results with TM.
