Help- Importing DV movie file into FCP how do I change my FCP settings
I am importing 5 different dv movie files that are approx 114.1mb each into Final Cut Pro. I opened a new project.. imported the files. Now I want to start putting together my sequence, but I need to change some settings, and I don't know where to start.
When I go to insert the portion of one of the files into the sequence I get a popup saying
"Attention- This clip does not match the sequence's settings or any of your sequence presets.
For best performance your sequence and External Video should be set to the format of the clips you are editing.
Change sequence settings to match the clip settings?"
(No) (Yes)
I obviously need to select yes.. but then i'm not sure what to choose after that.
Could someone guide me please?
Thank you
They are .dv (person who sent them to me used imovie to upload their video they shot)
So I need to open them in compressor and find the preset to convert them to dv quicktimes.
Once they are dv quicktimes and I import them into my new project. Should I be good to go?
Sorry for the novice questions... I do appreciate your help.

I'm trying to import a movie file into imovie that I know is 3hr16mins long but when it's finished importing, all I have in the programme is the heavily edited 51mins that i used in a previous project (using the same file),5 years ago. How can I stop iMovie from reverting back or could the much longer file be there and I have incorrect settings so I can't see it all?
Are these files MPEG compressed files? iMovie can not deal with the multiplexed audio of those files. For suggestions on how to get them right start here...

And if your files are not MPEGs, some of the suggestions on that page may still do what you need done.

Dynamically importing a .mov file into flash
Hi,
I need to import a .mov file into a flash file and create a
.swf movie. I can do it through File > Import Movies option. But
I want to make it dynamic and import the movie. I would like to use
ActionScripts rather than the File> Import options. Pls let me
know if this is possible. Let me know if you have any questions.
Appreciate any help.
Thanks & Regards,
MageshYou can only dynamically load at runtime FLV movies.
You can automate the authoring time environment but this is
only with the Authoring tool. See

Can I import a *.mov file into iPhoto?
Can I import a *.mov file into iPhoto? If so, how?
Yes. Open iPhoto:
File > Import to Library... > select the .move file > Import -
Cannot import a .mov file into the library
I am trying to import a .mov file into my library so I can
create a .fla file. Every time I try to import it into the library
using the import wizard, it starts the importing process and always
quits not quite two minutes into the process. It then returns me to
the front page of the import wizard. I have done this before with
absolutely no problems.
The one thing that I am wondering about is the size of this
particular .mov file. It is 377MB. Do you think this may be part of
my problem? Thank you in advance for anyone's input or
suggestions!Jeremy Williams wrote:

I would consider 10mb to be too big for a flash file. Even if
it was CD
I would load it dynamically to avoid performance problem.
377mb is out of the question way beyond flash ability to
maintain stable
performance, not just the final output but the IDE itself.

I can't import my iTunes files into pages, how can i fix the privileges problem?
when i try to import any mp3 file into a pages document, i get an access privileges error saying it is either corrupt, damaged or "can't be used" because I don't have access privileges. This has happened since I moved my iTunes library to an external drive. Anyone have any solutions? The privileges on both the library folder, and all its files are set to read and write for sharing and permissions.
If you do not have done so, set the "Ignore Ownership" flag on the external drive. YOu can set this flag from the "File > Get Info" panel for the drive.
How is your external drive formatted?
Can other applications open these mp3 files? QuickTime? Do they play in the Finder preview?
Do the filenames contain special charcters?

Problem Importing Importing Avid Mov File Into FCP
Hello all,
I had transitioned into this issue off an older thread I had, with a different topic. So I figured it was smarter to just make it it's own thread, since it's become it's own issue.
I am editing the core of a project on Final Cut Pro 6. A portion of the footage that was shot for this project though, was captured on a PC into Avid Media Composer 3.0, and therefore, converted to MXF format.
I am running both Final Cut Pro 6 (FCP 6) and Avid Media Composer 3.0 (AMC3) on my Macbook Pro, so I was able to import this MXF footage into AMC3. That was the easy part. The hard part, has been knowing how to properly export it, so I can then, properly import it into FCP6.
Important detail about the FCP6 System Settings:
- *The sequence preset is DVCPRO HD - 1080p24*
In the Avid, when I go to export a small 1 min clip (as a test), these are the Quicktime options I am given:
Fast-Export Quicktime NTSC
Fast-Export Quicktime PAL
Make New - QuickTime Reference
Pro Tools QuickTime (ref)
QuickTime Reference
Quicktime Reference DV Codec
Send To QT Movie
None of them were seeming to work. I was getting this message:
"Long GOP media can not be exported using same as source. Please select a custom resolution or transcode to an I-frame only resolution."
*Send To QT Movie* seems to be the only one that works. But I then had to go in and customize it, making my own Saved preset for this.
I've now so far tried this with 4 custom presets, and while all of them are able to export and play / look fine on my desktop..... none of them import correctly into FCP6. They'll play as clips... but completely stuttery and unusable. I'll then drop them into a sequence, and they'll play for about 3 seconds and then I'll get this message:
"Warning - Dropped Frames
One or more frames were dropped during playback.
If this occurs frequently, try:
- Turning off 'Unlimited RT'
- Lowering your compression data rate.
- Closing open sequences.
- Lowering the preference for real-time audio tracks.
- Increasing the speed of your system and/or disk drives and/or network connection."
Now, I've also gotten a message about the projects needing to have the same capture preset, but I can't replicate it at the time of this post. Though, I'm sure this is probably the root of the problem.
Here's why: In AMC3, with my custom export preset, I notice that Avid supports the DVCPRO codecs, but doesn't have the exact one I'm using in FCP6.
Here's what I have in my AMC3:
DV/DVCPRO - NTSC (this is the one I'm using, and have tweaked the frame rate to 23.98)
DVCPRO - PAL
DVCPRO HD 1080i50
DVCPRO HD 1080i60
DVCPRO HD 1080p25 (this one is close...)
DVCPRO HD 1080p30
DVCPRO HD 720i50
DVCPRO HD 720i60
DVCPRO50 - NTSC
DVCPRO50 - PAL
Now, you'll remember that my sequence preset in FCP6 is DVCPRO HD - 1080p24.
Because this doesn't exist in Avid, I went with DVCPRO HD 1080p25 and just customized the frame rate to 23.98.
Still no cigar though.
Does anyone have any suggestions on how I should further customize the Avid codecs? Or is there even a way to just download more Avid DVCPRO codecs so I can find one with 1080p24?
Sorry for such a long post. I like to be thorough.Hi Kyle,
Just some more backstory:
This was a two day shoot.
- One Day 1 of the shoot (Saturday), we shot with the Sony camera, on Sony DVC tapes (MiniDV). This was about 20 gigs worth of media shot that day. That footage was later captured onto an Avid MC 3.0 in MXF format. (I still have it all raw on my passport drive if you need further info about those files)
- On Day 2 of the shoot (Sunday), we got the camera we wanted all along for the shoot -- the Panasonic HVX200. Therefore, all of Day 2 was shot on P2 cards, converted on a Macbook Pro, and then put onto an external harddrive. This was about 80 gigs of media.
Right now, when I watch the Sunday footage (Sony) on FCP6, I do indeed see faint horizontal lines on the canvas, when free-framed and at 100%. They're not terrible... but they're there. (I'm not great at this, so if you need total confirmation, I can upload you a large rez screenshot so you can decipher if the interlaced lines are there)
Now, I just checked this out on the Sunday footage as well (the Panasonic P2 card footage which wasn't converted, but imported directly into FCP6, without need for the Avid as the middle-man), and I see the same faint lines on this as well.
Both pieces of media (the original Panasonic footage and the converted Sony footage) are at 29.97FPS. Both are at the same Compressor now (DVCPRO HD 1080p30) per your instructions . Meaning, the Pansonic footage brought into FCP6 had that as a preset from the moment I installed the program and was asked to choose my project settings..... and once you explained to me how to look for this, I then sought to match it on the Avid end, and changed the EXPORT settings on the Avid files to that codec.
So both sources medias match now in FCP6. They also play now without stutter.
But they both do have those lines. Albeit, faint, but I'm concerned about them now.
So I think this definitely has to do with my Final Cut Audio/Video settings:
My Sequence Preset is: DVCPRO HD - 1080p24
My Capture Preset is: 1080p24 48KHz
Should the Sequence Preset be changed to p30?
And if so... will I then have to recapture all the Panasonic footage back in? (I'd lose all my log notes and shot names).
Or, can I just delete the two timelines, change the sequence setting, and then redrag them back in?
Thanks for all your help, Kyle. -
Cannot import specific MOV file into iMovie. HELP please!
I have been using iMovie for many years and am not a novice.
For some reason, I have a specific MOV file that I cannot import into iMovie 10.0.5. When I try to import the file, I get an error message:
"No Importable Files: None of the selected files or folders can be imported"
The file is NOT corrupt and plays perfectly in QuickTime. Interestingly, when I try to import the movie in iMovie, it shows 0.0 sec duration, even though it load/plays perfectly in iMovie with a duration of 54:45. See file A1 below:
I even tried converting the file to M4V in Quicktime, but iMovie would still not import the new M4V file.
Any suggestions? This is an important Movie, I cannot re-record it, and I need to edit it in iMovie.
Thanks in advance!I copied it below. I would appreciate any suggestions!

Can't import mp4/mov files into iMovie
I tried to create a new project by importing a .mp4 file from my account on Youtube. It copied the file to the event but didn't create a thumbnail. I did some research and I tried:
-Quitting imovie, changing the name of the event folder, then restarting imovie.
-Importing the .mp4 to a different event folder. Quitting/restarting.
At this point, the thumbnail for the newly imported movie appeared but the other videos that were previously (and successfully) thumbnailed in that event disappeared. I quit/restarted iMovie and all the thumbnails in that event were missing.
Here's what I've tried since then:
-Converting the .mp4 in Handbrake to .mp4 and then importing again. No luck.
-TRYING to convert the .mp4 to .mov in mpeg streamclip. I get an "Audio Decoding Error" when I attempt.
-Converting the .mp4 to .mov while disabling the sound in mpeg streamclip. IT WORKS and iMovie is able to import AND thumbnail.
So it'd appear that there's something wrong with the audio in the .mp4 file. Tried other .mp4 files and none of them were able to be converted or imported. Tried extracting the audio from the .mp4 file via MPEG streamclip and there's the same "Audio Decoding Error." The audio on the .mp4 file is AAC.
OK... It'd appear that I'd need to just import the .mov (no sound) along with the audio from the clip (I've used AudioHijack for that) to edit both in iMovie. The problem is that when I try to export it in iMovie I receive error codes.
This just all seems way, way more complicated that it needs to be. Does anyone have any suggestions on something I haven't tried yet or perhaps some video editing software (non FCE) worth looking into?
ThanksI was currently having the same issue trying to import into imovie. I have EyeTV Hybrid and when exporting a movie it asks you to select format in which to export it in. I selected m-peg4 and when I tried to import into imovie it was grayed in the finder, so what I did was return to the export feature in EyeTV and exported again under a different format - for imovie. It's exporting as we speak and I feel this will allow me to import properly now. Hope this helps.

Importing Quicktime .move file into iMovieHD
I have been successfully pulling the files off a DVD using DVDxDV, and using that to export to Quicktime in .mov NTSC format. Then I can import into iMovie HD. It's been fine, but I have one file now that will not import. When i try to import it, it gives me an error message and says there isn't enough disk space to import it. But I was able to import other files, same size, and the window at the bottom of iMovie says there is more than 20 GB available. I thought maybe there was something wrong with that one file, so I went through the extraction process again, but that one file will still not import, even if I start a new empty project. The file is 1.4 GB, but the project has only about 25 minutes of video and this new file is about another 8 minutes.
Does anyone have any ideas? I have a 1GHZ Power PC G4, with 768 meg ram.
Thanks in advance for any help.
Patif it is already in DV format you really do not have to import it
There is a difference in .dv stream and a DV-encoded .mov:
You can just put a plain .dv stream in the Media folder and iMovie will digest it OK (if it is the same PAL/NTSC and 4:3/16:9 spec as the receiving project).
But this doesn't work with DV-encoded .mov files which the OP may have. iMovie HD will sort of imports it, but if you add a title, it will have bad artifacts.
I prefer to use MPEG Streamclip which, unlike some of its rivals, allows to convert DVD/VOB/MPEG to .dv stream which is iMovie's native format. For some strange reason other apps can convert to only .mov.
My only gripes with MPEG Streamclip are that the current version can't set the 4:3 or 16:9 flag to the exported .dv file (BTW, iMovie HD can't either!) and that it doesn't recognize QuickTime 7-style AIF format. The next version might fix these. -
Problem importing some .MOV files into Premiere Elements 11
Hello,
I am trying to import film footage into Premiere Elements 11 and am coming across a rather confusing problem. All of the footage is in .mov format and all of it was taken on the same device on the same day with the same settings.
When I try to import the footage, some files import ok, others will not import at all and I get a message saying 'The importer reported a generic error'. It seems very odd to me that some .MOV files are OK and others are not.
This same footage can easily be imported into Premiere Elements 10 and into Windows Movie Maker - which makes me think the issue is with Premiere Elements 11.
Does anyone have any ideas on this?
ThanksWhat model of camcorder is your video coming from and what format and resolution is it? Did you use Premiere Elements to get the video from the camcorder to your computer?
Have you ensured you have the latest version of Quicktime installed on your computer? -
Need help importing canon xf files into final cut X
Hello everyone, I am new to this site and am really appreciative of all the great information I have been able to obtain through everyones posts. I do realize this thred has been beat to death and apologize in advance for being slow. I am in the same situation as I have an xf 300 and 100 and for the life of me cant get all my files into final cut X. It's about to drive me crazy! I have taken the steps to download PikaFoto's workflow tool for the xf files but I am still having problems understanding how to use the program. Thankyou for providing this program as I am grasping for anything I can to get through this problem. Can I take the files directly into this workflow tool or do I need to go through my xf utiliy program? I just need a basic process to go from my camera to final cut X. A few of you guys have aparently been able to make this work with the same problem so I know it has to be something my tiny brain has not been able to process yet. Any help would really be great. Thanks

what a surprise...
FCPX is - besides many other features - a highly complex data-base application.- Just dragging some content just somewhere isn't the workflow how a data-base.app can manage its data. I dare to say, your experiments distructed your file-structure irreversible.
You should revert to some back-up BEFORE installing a beta.OS (!!) on a productive system.

I NEED HELP CONVERTING A MOVIE FILE INTO A DVD
So this is my problem.
I have FCE and made a movie. Now, after i rendered it and used iDVD to make a DVD, it works and everything, BUT when i play back the DVD on any DVD player, the picture is not that great and at points looks like a bad TV reception.
I have a SONY handycam and this is what i used to captured the footage so i dont know if i need a HD camcorder. So my question is how do i make my DVD's look smooth??? does it have to do with the way i am rendering the movie, saving it, capturing it????Please let me know. Thank youWhen you have finished editing in FCE this is the setting you MUST use:-
File>Export>QuickTime Movie. (For speed, deselect the "Make Movie Self-contained" box).
You must NOT use QuickTime CONVERSION.
The QT Movie is then dragged into iDVD etc.
This will produce good quality DVDs.
If you get jitter you may have to apply FCE's De-interlace Filter. -
I cannot import sandisk movie files into iMovie any more after years with no problems.
For years I have filmed with my Panasonic HC-X900 and taken the SD card via a usb convertor, plugged it into my macbook pro and iMovie has automatically found the new files - easy to import into iMovie. Now the files are nowhere to be seen even though I can play them back through the camera. Any suggestions?

Big trouble with importing my .MOV files into any editing software.
Hi All
I am new to the forum and i would like to ask you a really big question that has been bugging me for days now.
I have a Cannon 700D and i have CS 4 pro and Cyberlink Powerdirector 12. Both worked fine with any other video file, but when i tried to import a file originating from my cannon 700D camera both of the softwares stated that the files were either corrupted or not supported. The error message also stated that i should call the video provider to ask for an alternative video footage (which is me ). I tried having quick time installed so that it could install various other kinds of CODEC so that it could read and I have also tried switching the camera settings from PAL to NSTC. I would be really glad if anybody could give me an explanation and a detailed explanaiton on how to fix my problem. Thank you very much in advance.
