Help!Importing images to existing folder in Aperture

Hi everyone,
I am currently try to use Aperture to organise my image files. I have a very large image library appoximatly 100GB, they are already been organised in different folder, and been backed up on the server. But because the library is taking up a huge amount of space on the machine, I moved my library onto a external HDD. However, after I have deleted all the images(not the folders), I will need to add more images into the folders on the machine, then add them into Aperture library. The problem I am having, is whenever I try to add the new images, Aperture will automaticlly create a folder for me with the same folder name again, rather than adding them into the exiting project. Is there a way to import new images to exiting project which I imported before without having Aperture creating new folders for me?
The difficult part is because it is not going to be 3 or 4 images in one folder, but over 100000 images in different folders, how I can transfer the image without have to make any changes to the project in Aperture?
Many thanks in advance!
Ken

Hi Celineken-
If I understand you correctly, you have new images in a folder on a disk somewhere, and projects in your Aperture library with the same name as one or more folders on the disk. When you import the new images, Aperture is creating a new project with the name of the folder on the disk and importing the images there, instead of the already-existing project with the same in your library, is that right?
If so, happily there is a simple solution for you: Open the Import Pane and navigate to the folder with the new images. Select the images you want to import, then click the Destination popup in the upper right of the screen, under the heading "Aperture Library". Change the Destination from New Project to the project of your choice. You can also save a step and just click the project from the Projects list on the left side of the Import Pane. Now, when you click the Import button, the photos will be imported into the project you specified.

    Check your Import settings in the Import Panel, i.e. all that might exclude the image type you want to import:
    If you did not exclude any file types, and still Aperture will not import, remove your ImageCapture preferences fro your user library:
    To remove the image capture preferences:
    If Aperture is running, quit Aperture,  and log off and on again.
    Open your user library from the Finder's Go menu: Hit Command Shift G (⌘⇧G) and then type in: ~/Library/Preferences/  then hit return.
    In the window that opens remove "com.apple.ImageCapture.plist"
    and look into the subfolder "ByHost": if there are files named com.apple.ImageCapture  something .plist  remove them too.
    then try again.
    And if that still does not help, remove the Aperture preferences as well:
    ~/Library/Preferences/aperture.plist
    Regards
    Léonie
    P.S. in MacOS Lion and later the user library ~/Library is hidden by default.
    You can reveal it also  from the Finder's "Go" menu:
    Finder > Go,   then hold down the options ⌥ key, until the Library appears in the drop-down menu, select it and open the Library folder. Then go to the "Preferences".

    Tried to change that in preferences but no luck.

    It is working for me.  Two ways to import into an existing project:
    Select a project and view it in the browser in split view. If you drag image files from a folder directly into the filmstrip, the dragged image files will be added to that project.
    Or select a project in the library, before you open the Import panel. Then you can switch the destination project in the Import Settings  from "new Project" to the selected project.
    Have you tried these methods? Where does it not work for you?

  • When using Iphoto to import photo from existing folder, what happens if I delete the photo in Iphoto ? Will the original file in the folder be deleted too?

    When using Iphoto to import photo from existing folder to iphoto, what happens if:
    1. I delete that photo in iphoto? will the original file in the folder be deleted too ?
    2.  when importing, does the hard disk store 2 versions of the photo, hence occupying additional space in the harddisk?

    1 - no  --  iPhoto only manages fiel within the iPhoto library - it does not ever do anything with files outside the library
    2 - No idea what you are asking - by default (and strongly recommended) iPhoto copies the original to the iPhoto library and you delete the source file outside the iPhoto library - iPhoto alwasy has at least two versions of every photo and some times three - it always have the original, a thumbnail and once a photo is modified a preview - this is not optional - if it is not what you want then iPhoto is not the correct progrtam to be using for phopto management

    I am experiencing Mavericks failing to copy subdirectories from usb sticks, I am backing up game saves from a console. Both sticks I use are fine, same permissions of course since the console wrote the files. Sometimes it copies, sometimes it doesn't. It seems to be related to the mounting process.
    Thank God Apple hasn't (yet) broken bash.

  • Imported images from iphone are unsupported in aperture?

    When I try to import images from my iphone into aperture, they come in as gray boxes. When I click on these I get a message that the file format is unsupported. Anyone else running into this?!

    Also, I tried image capture and tried to open the jpg's in preview. This also didn't work and said the format is unsupported. Photoshop gives the following message:
    Could not complete your request because a JPEG marker segment length is too short (the file may be truncated or incomplete).

  • I cannot import images from EXT HD

    UNtil yesterday, everything was fine. I am on a Mac. Running iOS 10.9.5 and LR version 5.5 (CR 8.5)
    I have imported images from my card into Aperture and these images are stored on an external HD. I then bring the ones I wish to edot into LR
    When I try to bring them inot lr, the import process seems to go as always, but upon completion, i get a message saying 'some files cannot be written'. No Error code. Basically all files are not being written. The images are in Aperture. I can see and edit them there, but I cannot bring them from there into Lightroom as I have always done. I havemnt done anything to change my set up. SOmething has happened and I dont know what it is or what to do about it.
    I upgraded from LR4 online, so I no longer have a physical cd of the software.
    I would be very grateful for any help anyone can give me. Thank you

    I mean the directory specified in the Lightroom Import dialog box, near the top right, it says "Destination". Has that directory been accidentally changed to someplace different than it was before when things were working properly?
    I can't tell you how to change permissions, as I am not a Mac person, but I think that Google thing might be able to find the answer.

  • Import image from computer

    I would like to know how to import image to existing report page.
    Thanks,

    Hi,
    I'm not sure what code you have copied and then updated. So, assuming that your filebrowse item is called P2_FILE, my upload process would be:
    BEGIN
    IF (:P2_FILE IS NOT NULL) THEN
      INSERT INTO A_IMAGES (FILE_NAME, BLOB_CONTENT, MIME_TYPE)
       SELECT FILENAME, BLOB_CONTENT, MIME_TYPE
       FROM APEX_APPLICATION_FILES WHERE NAME = :P2_FILE;
      DELETE FROM APEX_APPLICATION_FILES WHERE NAME = :P2_FILE;
    END IF;
    END;My DISPLAY_IMAGE procedure is:
    create or replace PROCEDURE "DISPLAY_IMAGE"
      inID NUMBER
    AS
      vMIME VARCHAR2(48);
      vLENGTH NUMBER;
      vFILENAME VARCHAR2(2000);
      vBLOB BLOB;
    BEGIN
      SELECT MIME_TYPE, BLOB_CONTENT, FILE_NAME, DBMS_LOB.GETLENGTH(BLOB_CONTENT)
        INTO vMIME, vBLOB, vFILENAME, vLENGTH
      FROM A_IMAGES
      WHERE IMAGE_ID = inID;
      owa_util.mime_header(nvl(vMIME, 'application/octet'), FALSE);
      htp.p('Content-length: ' || vLENGTH);
      owa_util.http_header_close;
      wpg_docload.download_file(vBLOB);
    END;followed by:
    GRANT EXECUTE ON DISPLAY_IMAGE TO PUBLICMy report's SQL statement is:
    SELECT FILE_NAME,
    '<img src="#OWNER#.DISPLAY_IMAGE?inID=' || NVL(IMAGE_ID, 0) || '" height="50" width="50" />' IMAGE
    FROM A_IMAGES
    ORDER BY FILE_NAMEThis is based on my A_IMAGES table, which is defined as:
    CREATE TABLE "A_IMAGES"
      "IMAGE_ID" NUMBER(10,0) NOT NULL ENABLE,
      "FILE_NAME" VARCHAR2(4000) NOT NULL ENABLE,
      "BLOB_CONTENT" BLOB,
      "MIME_TYPE" VARCHAR2(4000),
      CONSTRAINT "A_IMAGES_PK" PRIMARY KEY ("IMAGE_ID") ENABLE
    CREATE SEQUENCE "IMAGE_ID_SEQ" MINVALUE 1 MAXVALUE 99999999999999999999999 INCREMENT BY 1 START WITH 1 NOCACHE NOORDER NOCYCLE
    CREATE OR REPLACE TRIGGER "A_IMAGES_BI"
    BEFORE
    INSERT ON "A_IMAGES"
    FOR EACH ROW
    BEGIN
      DECLARE

      BEGIN
        IF :NEW.IMAGE_ID IS NULL THEN
          SELECT IMAGE_ID_SEQ.nextval INTO v_id FROM dual;
          :NEW.IMAGE_ID := v_id;
        END IF;
      END;
    END;
    ALTER TRIGGER "A_IMAGES_BI" ENABLEFrom my test page [http://htmldb.oracle.com/pls/otn/f?p=267:11] you can see that this functionality works just fine. I can only assume that one part of the above has been copied or rewritten incorrectly?

  • Help!  Images in Aperture are dark and oversaturated...

    I just got a new MacBook Pro, so I decided to download the Aperture demo to give it a try. I have been working with Lightroom and wanted to compare the two.
    So I imported my first folder of images from some conference events I shot. My first impression was that images appeared a bit dark, contrasty and oversaturated, but I figured that was probably a result of underexposure, since I didn't have a lot of light to work with, or possibly from working with flash in dark rooms.
    I went through and opened up all the photos and pulled-down highlights and did color-correction (flesh tones were a bit red). Then I uploaded photos to SmugMug... imagine my surprise to see everything appear flat and light and undersaturated. I couldn't figure it out... I looked through Aperture for possible explanations... proofing wasn't on so that wasn't it. Exported images were given sRGB profile (as opposed to Adobe RGB). I checked them in both Safari and Firefox... same results. Then I went back to the originals and opened them in Preview... they were lighter and less-contrasty than Aperture showed them to be. They looked like they should have looked. (By the way, I am working with JPEGs taken in the sRGB color space.)
    So what happened in Aperture? Did something happen on import? I have searched all over the internet and can't seem to find anyone else having this same problem.
    Help!
    -Erin

    Okay, may have posted prematurely... images look the same in Aperture as they do in Photoshop and Lightroom. So it is something weird with how they display in Preview and online...
    Grrrr! I hate this color management crap!

  • Exporting Aperture photos to an external HD while keeping existing folder structure

    Hi,
    I have over 300gb of photos on my MBP.  I need to export the photos onto an external Hard Drive and keep the existing folder structure.  How can this be done?
    My source for the Aperture library is iPhoto.  I know that I can 'show package contents' from right clicking the iPhoto library, but this only displays the masters.  I need the versions as I have done many edits on the majority of photos.  I am fine with having the photos separated out by date - renaming the folder isn't a problem.  I just don't want to have to sort through ALL of my photos and place them into different folders.
    Does anyone have any ideas?
    Thanks!

    Thanks for the information everyone!  I apologize if I'm not being clear.
    Here are a few call outs:
    1.  I have my aperture library and iPhoto synced (the source of all my photos is iPhoto.  I exclusively use Aperture for photo editing however).
    2.  I am actually using a work computer and I am leaving the company.  Therefore I need to give the computer back.  I will be 'uninstalling' Aperture and eventually erasing all the photos.
    3.  I don't know what my next photo editing computer will be at this point as I have not purchased one.
    4.  Since I don't know my next computer, I would like to have all of my existing "Folders" and "Projects" (as Aperture defines them) on an external drive so I can pick and pull the ones I would like to view / edit.
    5.  On my next computer, I would not like to import my exact settings / folder structure from Aperture.  I will be starting fresh.  With that said, I would prefer to have all my existing "Folders" and "Projects" in one giant folder called "Pictures" on my external HD.
    Example folder structure on my External HD:
    Folder 1: Pictures
    Folder 1a: Aperture "Folder" 1
    Folder 1ai: Aperture "Project" 1
    Folder 1aii: Aperture "Project" 2
    Folder 1b: Aperture "Folder" 2
    Folder 1bi: Aperture "Project" 1
    Folder 1bii: Aperture "Project" 2
    I have roughly 90 "Projects" inside about 5 "Folders".  Of course I can create a folder on my external HD, select all the pictures, and click export for every single one of my "Projects", but I would prefer not do to that as it is incredibly time consuming.  I am looking for an automated way of copying all my photos to an external drive while maintaining my existing folder / projects hierarchy into what 'finder' defines as 'folders'.
    Although I would like to keep my 'masters' and 'versions', my original thought was to just export the versions.  So actually, I guess just 'moving' the entire library would work.  But since I don't know what computer I will work on and I may be on a temporary computer (install Aperture and manually select photos to import and work on), I wanted to have them be in a folder structure for easy importing and viewing if I wanted to on any mac.
    My existing structure in Aperture are Folders --> Projects.
    In order to copy my entire library, I have gone into (from finder) "Hard Drive" > Users > Wingmandan > Pictures > iPhoto Library.  I have taken that icon and dragged into my external HD.  It was 300 gb, and took about 8 horus to complete.
    Desired end result
    -Be able to quickly reference/view the versions of my pictures on any mac through my external HD (Versions)
    -Be able to choose what photos to import based upon my existing 'folders' and 'projects' into my next computer (Versions and Masters)
    -Have a full backup of my Aperture Library
    I hope this makes more sense and I'm a bit more clear.  Again, thanks again for your help.  I need to return the laptop by the end of the week.

  • How can I import *just* the new images in a folder?

    Is there anyway to import only the images within a folder that aren't already in the library? This seems to be the default behavior in Lightroom and makes really good sense. If I add an image to a folder without doing so in Aperture, I'd really like to just import that new version into the library.
    Thanks,
    -Dave

    Yes, I knew that I could do this, but I was hoping for an automated method as I suspect that I will screw things up if I rely on doing everything manually.

  • How can I import selected images from a folder instead of the whole folder in iPhoto 9.5.2?

    Hi there,
    I was trying to help my parents import some photos from a folder they have created with photos from their holiday. They only want to import select images from this folder into iPhoto. I said it would be easy and they can do it in 2 ways. First, they can drag and drop selected photos from their folder into iPhoto - and this works for them. However, more convieniently, they can click file>import to Library and then select the photos they want by going into the folder... Well that's how it works on my iPhoto '11 at least. When they showed me their screen via Skype (they are running iPhoto 9.5.2), when they click import to library, and try to go into the folder containing their photos, it imports the whole thing and there appears to be no way that they can enter the folder to select just a few photos from what I could see.
    Does anyone know anything aout this problem?
    Cheers.

    What view are using in the Import dialogue. Column view might be easiest to navigate.

  • How to make new project in existing folder with applescript in Aperture?

    I want to create a new project in an existing folder. I've scoured the web for answers to this but I cant find any. The closest I've come is this:
    tell application "Aperture"
    set imgSel to (get selection)
    if imgSel is {} then
    error "Please select an image."
    else
    set pName to name of parent of item 1 of imgSel
    set pID to id of parent of item 1 of imgSel
    set cID to id of parent of parent of item 1 of imgSel
    set cName to name of parent of parent of item 1 of imgSel
    set cLoc to folder cName
    tell library "Aperture Library"
    make new project at cLoc with properties {name:pName}
    repeat with i from 1 to count of imgSel
    move item i of imgSel to project (pName)
    end repeat
    end tell
    end if
    cLoc
    end tell
    Which returns:
    error "Aperture got an error: AppleEvent handler failed." number -10000
    Can anyone enlighten me as to what I'm doing wrong here or show me another way to achieve my goal, thanks?

    when you say 'new project in an existing folder'..... I assume you mean to create a new Project inside of an existing "Blue" folder...?
    Easy.... Select (click) the Blue folder you wish a new Project to appear inside > At the top left corner where it says "new" click the drop down arrow and select the project icon and click it.
    Easier still > select the Blue folder you wish another Project to appear inside > use 'Command & N' on the keypad and away you go...
    If you dont mean the above...? and you want a blue folder inside a blue folder..?
    To create a new blue folder use either the 'New' icon again at the top of the library inspector and click the blue folder icon or (Shift & Command & N ) on the keypad. Then select the new blue folder and repeat the process again...... A folder inside a folder..
    Couldn't be simpler....
    Aperture already provides these simple commands.... I cant imagine why you want to write an 'Applescript Action' for it.... Unless just for the heck of it...??

  • Aperture not working to get import previews and thus import images

    I cannot seem to get images to appear int eh Import Window's preview pane, and thus cannot import them. I have some 1600 images from a recent shoot in a sub-folder on an external drive (in two locations actually) and Aperture is not hunting them down. I have tried importing files on the desktop as a test and the same problem, no previews and no chance to import. All my OS and Aperture updates are installed and I did a restart to no avail.
    I know that this version of Aperture, along with the user manually select to not import into a New Project (grip for Apple dev if they are reading), that previews take long to load and freeze the Import process on my setup. So, it could be that it is taking forever to get 1600 previews, but viewing them in a finder window shows no problems getting previews.
    Any pointers as to what the problem might be?

    I have occasionally had this problem and found either waiting a while or cancelling the Import and then retrying the Import (and being patient) works.
    The workflow I use includes giving a custom master/version name to the appropriate images from the camera, such as "Judy in the Garden", importing those pics of Judy, and then supplying another master/version name, such as "Punch Drunk" for the appropriate images of Punch, importing those, and so on. So it can take many iterations to pull all the images in. Often the imports work as you would expect but then suddenly, nothing appears to happen and cancel and I redo it. My suspicion is Aperture is busy doing some housekeeping or other (or hung) but since a retry or two does the trick, I don't worry about it.

  • Importing images with Aperture 2.1 Trial

    I've installed the latest trial version of Aperture and have tried importing images from one of my external hard discs, but having navigated to the folder containing the images I want to download, (all of which are RAW files from my Nikon D300), no thumbnails show up and Aperture tells me there are no images that I can import.
    I've navigated to other folders that contain various other kinds of image files, (e.g. .JPG and .TIF files), and still Aperture won't display them for import. However, when I connect my camera direct to my laptop and navigate to its folder, no problem! Up come the thumbnails and I can import as many as I want.
    Does anyone have any idea what might be going wrong? i.e. Why can't I import RAW files from my external hard disc?
    Many thnaks,
    Chris

    I'm having the opposite trouble. All of a sudden, Aperture refuses to show thumbnails or download images from my Nikon D-50, but I can get them using Image Capture and then import from the hard disk.
