Help importing SD video to FCE4

I am trying to download SD video from a new Sony HDR-SR10 for editing in FCE. I have two main problems:
1. It seems like the only way to get the SD video off the camera and into FCE is to go through iMovie. FCE won't let me capture it, and the Log/Transfer function only pulls off the HD video off the camera, not showing the SD video at all. I believe the SD video files are recorded as MPG files. So what I have done is download the SD video in iMovie and then export the clips as an XML file, then open in it FCE. The first question: is there an easier way to do this?
2. Once I import the XML file with the SD video, I'm having trouble working with it. I have placed the XML sequence in the timeline and rendered it. I can then cut the video using the razor blade, but there doesn't seem to be any way to slice up the clips into independent clips that I can name and manipulate etc. I think this is because the XML file is coming in as a sequence rather than just video, but I am honestly so confused that I don't know what to try next.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

1. You need to convert the media. I don't know what iMovie does to it but it won't work in FCE as it is. You could use MPEG Streamclip to convert the media I think.
2. XML import is for iMovie projects and brings in a sequence and the media. You should be able to put the clip in the browser, mark In and Out points, use the Blade tool, whatever you want in FCE. The media still may not be in the right format for FCE however. What are the specs of the media? Look in the QT player and get info for the iMovie ingest file. What exactly does it say?

  • Importing VHS video into FCE4 via a camcorder

    Hello,
I’m trying to import some old family videos that were recorded on an old VHS camera (now long departed) into Final Cut Express 4 using a Sony DCR-TR330 camcorder & a VHS player.
The camcorder is connected to my iMac via the firewire interface, the VHS player is connected to the “audio/video” input on my camcorder
When I press play on the VHS player the video appears in the Final Cut Express 4 capture window (the audio also plays) When I click “Capture Now” on the capture window I get the message:
    “Waiting for Timecode
Device must be in VTR mode when Device Control is enabled”
If I first record the VHS video onto a Hi8 tape in the camcorder, I can then import the video (& audio) into FCE4 using the “Capture Now” button.
Is there any way to import the video straight into FCE8 instead of first having to transfer it to the Hi8 format.
    Thanks for any help.
    John Hutchinson

Many thanks for your prompt reply,
I am now able to capture straight from VHS to FCE4
    Kind Regards

  • Help importing iDVD video

I'm having trouble importing iDVD videos into iTunes (and then into my iPhone) that I made with iMovie and then burned with iDVD. When I try to import it, nothing goes into my iTunes movie folder. I get the sense that there's a problem with the type of file it is, but I'm not sure what to do about it (and haven't seen a similar post here). Thanks-
    Dino

If you still have the working file from iMovie, you should be able to save as mp4/aac file (quicktime), instead of working with iDVD file. If you have one of those, it is even better - just drag it into iTunes. If you have non-standard aspect ratio, then you will have to convert it to iPod video somewhere (in iTunes also).
DVD files are in a folder called Video_TS and they need to be ripped using Handbrake or some other software like that so it can be used in iTunes.
It is time consuming, from my perspective, so I don't do it very often...
    Cheers

  • Need help importing Hi8 footage into FCE4

    Hi all,
I have a Sony Digital 8 TRV310 camcorder. I'd like to be able to import the Sony footage directly into FCE 4 but am having trouble.
I've successfully imported Hi8 footage from the TRV310 into FCE 4 in the past (it's been a couple years) but for the life of me I cannot remember how I did it (it had something to do with Easy Setup and choosing 'device control = none' or something like that. I can't seem to find that option anymore and the only 'device control none' is 'DV-NTSC DV Converter' and that selection doesn't work for the import).
Here is the process that I am going through:
    1. I hook my Sony TRV310 up to my Mac Pro via a firewire 400 cable, turn the camera on and switch it to VTR (play) mode. I manually cue to the beginning of the footage I want to capture.
    2. Before attempting to import Sony footage into FCE 4 I go to 'easy setup' and dial in format=NTSC and use=DV-NTSC then click the setup button. I then go to file-->capture and a small window pops up indicating that capture is being initialized.
    3. The the 'capture window' pops up with preview screen indicating that 'preview has been disabled'
    4. I then hit the 'play' button in the capture window and then hit the 'capture now' button.
A black window with 'Final Cut Express and Apple logo' pops up for a few seconds, then a warning window pops up which states 'this operation could not be completed as there is no video'.
Any help with this will be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks.
    Dennis

    Sounds pretty close to me.
Try starting a NEW Project the the DV Converter option selected , you may not have initiated the DV Converter option.
Also there is no device control, so the Capture Now will not work, Start the camera manually and use the Escape key to stop capture.

  • Help-Import Analog Video

I have done this successfully in the pas, but think am missing a stp, can anyone help.
My old camcorder is hooked up via S-Video Cable to new Digital Camcorder. I have a blank tape in th new camcorder. I have old cam on VCR and hit play, new cam is on camera and I hit import, but only get audio and a blank screen.

Hi napamatt - it seems that your camera does have an analogue video-in capability (not all do), and I assume you are trying to import directly into iMovie using that method? And you have connected your new cam to the computer by firewire?
Does the iMovie screen display the 'Camera Connected' notice?
It may be that your new camera does not have a 'pass-through' capability. With some cameras, this feature has to be activated via a menu option.
Have you tried making the connection without a tape in the new cam? That's the way 'pass-through' worked until iMovie HD, after which you had to make the connection with a tape in, and then remove the tape (at least for some cameras (mine included).
You may have to copy to the tape, and from there import into iMovie.
    Does that help at all?

  • Help importing live video from DV deck?

Ok so I have a JVC DV firewire deck.
I have a old school vcr hooked up to the deck. The deck will convert the vcr output to DV output
without actually recording the signal.  SO with the last version of iMovie I would choose import
the DV deck is recognized. I would than start the VCR inputing into the DV deck and could see
the VCR tape being played in the input window of iMovie I would than record through iMovie
and end up with an event. WIth this version of iMovie I still see the video being played in the import
window but when i hit the input button it doesnt actually record the video being streamed as if its
waiting for me to hit the transport controls in the deck. Is there a way to revert back to the last version of iMovie where
this was not a problem?  Also how do you designate in which of 5 different hard drives I have where I want an event stored?

Cool, I can see me using this - need to properly test with http://b-l-a-c-k-o-p.com/CamCamX.html#upgrade
this allows you to choose video sources to play - so i'm betting it will allow video cameras to be used - so it ought to be possible to do live demos/illustrate slides with 3d objects etc ... cool - suspect voice syncing still might be an issue. And KN record doesn't work properly if you have a live movie - it just shows the camera content that's live ... (if you follow me...)
PS Almost forgot - it will do one of the things I was so desperate to achieve: It would allow you to have a window on the screen with a live feed of a signer for those who use BSL and other sign languages - that's really important. And if you needed to you could use two projectors (see other thread on multiple screens) and put the signer on a nicely designed screen all of their own. WOW!!!

  • *need help* Imported avi video portion playback is super fast but the audio is normal

I imported an avi file that was recorded on a dell laptop built-in webcam (running windows vista).  When I imported this file/clip into Premiere Pro CC, the video portion played back 2-3x faster than normal yet the audio played back normal.  So the video finished way early and the screen went black while the audio kept going normal speed.  What's going on?  FYI, I imported the same video clip into windows movie maker (using the PC I'm on now which is running windows 8.1 pro) to create a quick video blog and everything was fine.

AVI is a wrapper, what is inside YOUR wrapper - Exactly what is INSIDE the video you are editing?

  • Need help importing music videos to Quicktime in full quality

Hello everyone. I am having a really hard time figuring out a way to convert music videos in raw DVD video (VOB files) into an equally high quality Quicktime format. All of the software I have used thus far has not gotten me anywhere near the quality I need for this project, so I was wondering if anyone had a suggestion as to what software would be best to achieve a high quality. I have been working on a Windows computer, but I have access to a Mac. After encoding the videos, I plan to put them into iMovie and make a compilation DVD to play at a school function.
    Thanks!

  • Importing video to FCE4

I'm looking at buying Elgato Video Capture, before I do can anyone tell me if you can directly import VHS video into FCE4 for editing with it? If not is there any other way of doing it?

There is no way you can capture VHS video directly.
You need a device that will convert the analogue material to DV.
This could be a standalone A-D Converter or a DV camcorder which has "Analogue IN".
All camcorders have "Analogue OUT" but many don't have "Analogue IN".
If yours has, you are in luck!

I am importing a video and in iMovie the video is now white. the audio still plays and I can play the video properly outside of iMovie so any help is good?

I going to recommend again, downloading and installing some video helper applications.
    1. http://perian.org/ (this will add a number of different file types to the ones QuickTime already plays)
    2. http://www.divx.com/en/software/mac (will add more file types to what QuickTime can play)
Either one of these might be necessary to get MPEG Streamclip to export the video. Failing that the only other thing I have found is an obscurve discussion thread on Avid.com:
    http://duc.avid.com/archive/index.php/t-277791.html
I've figured out what the problem is on my end. The video came from Avid on a Windows machine and was encoded with Squeeze. I found out that the 2 seconds of black at the top of the video were at a different frame rate than the rest of the video. I chopped off the 2 seconds of black and started at the first frame of video, exported it with Quicktime Pro and was able successfully view the video in ProTools. Apparently Squeeze will let you create a movie file that has different frame rates within the same movie... This fixed my issue that was exactly as you describe, hopefully it might work for you.
Lastly, you could try converting the video clip using HandBrake

  • Help! ipod can't import movies/video...

hope u guys can helpme out. Just bought ipod recently but having problems importing music videos/ movies from itunes. Called apple but they said that the movies is not the right format as my ipod. How do i reformat or import movies into my ipod? pls help. thanks

There is two ways of playing back music videos. They are displayed in your "songs" as well as in "Videos" > Music Videos. When you are playing back a music video from "Songs" then you can only see a small, non-moving screenshot and can only hear sound. However if you play it back from "videos" > "Music Videos" than you can see the video and sound.
    Is that your case?

.. seems like, iM is an actor's tool.. you're not the only one producing his own showreeel with iM.. lately gave some help to your British colleague +James Frazer+, accomplishing the same.. (besides being an excellent actor, James is a wizzard using iDVD!)
no need to use HB.. if the DVDs are not commercially encrypted/DRM (=no allowed discussions issue on this board), you simply abuse a MacOs Utility, shown in my screencast:

  • Please help CS 4.2 will not import ANY video file

I've been working for days to get this fixed. Everything installs fine software wise and I am using a
Matrox RTX2 for capture/playback but Prem CS4.2 will not import any video file type.
My system is up to spec.
I've seen this problem discussed but none of the (many) suggested solutions have helped.
I've uninstalled and re-installed the OS and clean install multiple times and still I get "file format not supported" with EVERY file type.
    Please help!

    Brian,
    Welcome to the forum.
When issues occur with Matrox cards, updating its drivers often fix things.
If you create a non-Matrox Project, can you then Import AV files?

  • I need help importing video from my Sony digital 8 camcorder

Help !! I bought a new imac g5. When I try to import my video from my sony DCR-TRV460 it shows only a blue screen without sound. My camcorder is connected via firewire. I open iMovieHD, then connect my camcoder. I turn on my camcoder and set it to play/edit. iMovie starts controlling my camcorder (rewind, play, etc...) yet it onlys shows a blue screen when playing. It does the same if I use the import button. When it starts playing, sometimes it shows a scrambled digital image, then goes to blue screen. Can anyone tell me how I get my imovie and camcorder to work together? Thanks

Can anyone tell me how I get my imovie and camcorder to work together?
Yup! but you have to keep an open mind here...
First-if your camera can control the camera but not see the video,
    *Open Garageband
    *Play a note or two
    *Close Garageband
    *Open iMovie
    The camera will work now-REALLY!!
    If not, look here:
