Depends on how much you need a new computer. If you can wait, do. If not, then you'll have to buy it when it comes out.

  • Please help me choose a Mac Mini

I have not owned any mac computer and have been waiting for the new mini for a few months. I need a decent mac computer without having to spend too much to program iOS and maybe some photo viewing and casual editing. So the OS X is important to me.
The new Mac mini is kind of disappointing. I would expect a better quad CPU and user expandable memory (still uncertain so far). So I am struggling between two choices:
    1. I may choose the new 2.6 G model and definitely need the memory to be 16GB. I am not sure if I want the 1TB fusion drive for $200.
    2. There are still some old 2012 quad models available at some online stores and I may get one and expand the memory to 16 myself. Can we easily swap out the hard drive and install one 1TB SSD? How do we transfer the OS and app with the box to the new SSD? The biggest concern on this option is if I can update the OS to OS X Yosemite and even later versions because I will use it for programming iSO apps and must be able to update to the latest OS X.
    Thanks.

From what I see in the Apple Store, the new Mini still does not have a quad-core cpu
nor did the older Mini (Late 2012) across any they had listed. However if you need a
quad core model and performance, looking into the future, you should seek to inspect
the higher specification computers in the line. Since there is a limited upgrade, I can
see why the Mini is desired. If you get a Mini server model, internal storage options
can be increased. New MINI 16GB RAM upgrade is an Online Store-only upgrade.
    http://store.apple.com/us/buy-mac/mac-mini
The only small computer with quad-core cpu technologies in the Store, is 15" MB/Pro
portable, offering several features but at a higher price; including a Retina display.
Of these, two models; both near & above $2K USD; the dual GPU model may have
gotten past the hardware earlier model owners cited issues with over a few years.
    http://store.apple.com/us/buy-mac/macbook-pro
An SSD and RAM upgrade could make the MINI a fair computer, even though it only
has the Dual-Core technology. However the upgrade may affect AppleCare coverage.
There often are Late 2012 model Mini Macs in the official online refurb store page, &
they qualify for the optional AppleCare; however they don't offer custom upgrades.
The low-end MINI has similar specs to the low-end non-Retina MacBook Pro 13-inch.
A little faster bus speed, and a slightly newer graphic processor...
At least the newest Mini, according to the online Apple Store, says it will ship with
Yosemite; so with 16GB RAM, that can be a good start. You should ask an Apple
genius or specialist what they can do for you in the way of an upgrade to larger SSD
or HDD, after delivery, so AppleCare is not affected. If they still let you do anything.
    In any event...
    Good luck & happy computing!

  • Help me choose a Mac

This will be my first Mac purchase. I'll be using the Mac for my "mini" home studio. Its nothing impressive, just a drum machine, a turntable, a keyboard, and an alesis io 26 interface with Cubase 4 and a couple other audio/editing programs running.
I needed to know if a Mac Mini running at 2.0GHz, with 2GB's of RAM installed with the Mac OS X Leopard would be enough to run all of these programs and will be able to support my interface. I know the interface will work with Leopard and the 2GB's of RAM, but would all of this make the Mac Mini run slow? Thank You

    yeah~ that's right, Go for a 24" iMac, you won't regret it.
I would have one if I had enough budget.
I try not to look iMac 24" too long when I go to Apple shop, because it will lure me to buy it. Even in Apple web site, when iMac appears, I will just change the page very fast or I will start to think of buying it. I am not a computer nerd, but Apple iPod and computers are really attractive.

  • Please help me choose my MAC

    Hi all,
I bet you get this a lot but im struggling to decide on what to spend my hard earnt money on.
I am looking at either an Macbook Pro or Macbook Air.
    Normal uses are:
    E-mail
    Apps
    Facetime
    Pictures
    Music
    Specialised uses:
    Recording Music
World of Warcraft (Not a heavy user)
So basically, my contacts are telling me different things...
Get the Air, SSD  with external storage because its worth the other sacrifices
    no ethernet socket
    less disk space
Get the Pro, 750GB Seria ATA Drive no external storage.
Im basically looking at spending no more than £1500, but to be honest, id like to of spent less yet if spending that extra amount is game changing then im not worried...
Anyone able to tell me if the SSD and Air is deffinately worth the sacrifices of having to get the external storage and losing the internal disk capacity?

    Guys,
I think im going to spank the majority of my bonus on the following...
    MacBook Pro 15-Inch
    2.2GHz Quad-core Intel Core i7
    4GB 1333MHz DDR3 SDRAM — 2x2GB
    128GB  Solid State Drive
    SuperDrive 8x (DVD±R DL/DVD±RW/CD-RW)
MacBook Pro 15-inch Hi-Res Glossy Widescreen Display
Backlit Keyboard (British) & User's Guide (English)
That comes in @ £1,789 incl. VAT
That will last me some seriously good few years for my range of needs... agreed?
(I have an external 1TB storage already for my PICS and VIDS and MUSIC)
    Thanks
Ah yea your more of a "power user / 3D gamer" although please take a look at this video concerning the glossy screen, you may reconsider and get the anti-glare as it's a big creature comfort feature and nobody will care about two days after you got your new shiny machine, but your eyes will from glare and reflections.
    (loud sound attack)
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_X0wo6dIsMU
Another, the 128GB drive is  TINY, you won't be able to carry much on it or have a lot in Windows if you go there.
You'll be hooking up that external drive A LOT and if it's USB that's going to be slow as Apple only supports USB 2.1, not the newer USB 3., you'll need Firewire 800 preferred, then the one port is going to wear out faster as your connecting and disconnecting a lot to go somewhere with the laptop.
Take that external with you and it's subjective to shock/loss and damage.
IMO you should get the 5,400 750GB stock drive or the 500GB 7,200 RPM, 500GB is a good size to grow into.
Plus since it's a MacBook Pro, LATER when the price of 500GB SSD comes down from the clouds you can upgrade it yourself and not void your AppleCare or warrantly (as long as you don't break anything, the new drive isn't covered of course)
I have the 5,400 RPM stock drive, because the larger RAM ability of these newer 64Bit machines (32 bit could only access 3.5 GB or so) there is less swapping to the drive so the drive speed isn't so much a factor like it used to be with the Intel Core Duo's that needed a fast 7,200 RPM drive to handle swap.
Also don't let Apple upgrade your RAM, it's a fortune, especially if you walk out the door with a new machine it goes up to $435 to up to 8GB as they don't buy back the 4GB.
Otherworld Computing and Crucial.com has 16GB of RAM for $234 apx now.
Again RAM, like the hard drive, is user replaceable as long as nothing is broken and it's not covered by AppleCare/warrantly. Keep your original RAM, you may one day have to reinstall it.

  • Help me choose a Macbook Pro

Hey everyone, I need some help in choosing which Macbook Pro is right for me.
Basically I'm wondering which of these 2 would be a better choice.

    http://store.apple.com/us/product/FB471LL/A?mco=MTEzMjIzODU
    What are the main differences?
4gb of ram should be sufficient and I doubt I would ever upgrade to 8gb.
as for graphics, I would mostly only need a mac that would allow me to play the latest Sims games. the first has a graphics memory of 512 and the second has 256.
    Thanks in advance.

  • Anyone help me reset my Mac OSX 10.8.2 password? I have no disk

Anyone help me reset my Mac OSX 10.8.2 password? I have no disk

You must back up all data before continuing, unless you've already done so. If you need to back up but can't log in, ask for instructions.
If the user account is associated with an Apple ID, and you know the Apple ID password, then maybe the Apple ID can be used to reset your user account password.
Otherwise*, boot into Recovery mode. When the OS X Utilities screen appears, select
    Utilities ▹ Terminal
from the menu bar. In the Terminal window, type this:
    res
Press the tab key. The partial command you typed will automatically be completed to this:
    resetpassword
Press return. A Reset Password window opens.
Select your boot volume ("Macintosh HD," unless you gave it a different name) if not already selected.
Select your username from the menu labeled Select the user account if not already selected.
Follow the prompts to reset the password. It's safest to choose a password that includes only the characters a-z, A-Z, and 0-9.
    Select
     ▹ Restart
    from the menu bar.
You should now be able to log in with the new password, but your Keychain will be reset (empty.) If you've forgotten the Keychain password (which is ordinarily the same as your login password), there's no way to recover it.
*Note: If you've activated FileVault, this procedure doesn't apply. Follow instead these instructions.

  • Help me choose a 865PE board

    Hi,
I need some help in choosing the best(most feature packed, fast etc.) MSI 865PE motherboard.
There are two boards that are pretty identical and trying to find the difference between them has been difficult. They are the Neo2-FIS2R and Neo2-PFISR.
Which one of these two should I buy? They cost about the same. What are the major differences between them?
    Please help me in choosing.
    Thanks!

The faster Prescott's are no longer shown, so maybe they are being re-spec'd again.
Great, I did see this link earlier but I'm confused by several things and please excuse my ignorance but I have been out of the Hardware scene for 4-5 months which is a long time in hight tech.
First thing on this table that I see on the P version is "P4EE Support" what is this? and why does the first table not support it?
On the first table it had a column "PCB Ver." what is this and where can it be found on my computer or Mobo?
So from looking at this link then I can safely say that I can buy a prescott CPU and it will run fine on my neo2 FIS2R?
faster Prescott's, so are there variations in the CPU and will my board be able to handle the faster ones?
Sorry about all the questions but if I can get answers to these then it would be extremely helpful.

    UPDATED:
I do find these two tables very confusing and there is little explanation, To me the first table is saying that all the boards only support P4's and not prescott? the second table is saying that only the Extreme Edition supports prescott?
but the second table also lists the FIS2R etc so its all very confusing????

Please describe the problem in as much relevant detail as possible. The "etrecheck" fad hasn't made that step any less necessary. The usual results of posting etrecheck output on this site without a full description of the problem are very poor.
The many "failed" warnings that etrecheck sometimes spews mean nothing. Those warnings are not a reason to reinstall the OS, or to do anything else at all. They should be ignored.
The better your description of the problem, the better the chance of a solution.
For example, if the computer is slow, which specific actions are slow? Is it slow all the time, or only sometimes? What changes did you make, if any, just before it became slow? Have you seen any alerts or error messages? Have you done anything to try to fix it? Most importantly, do you have a current backup of all data? If the answer to the last question is "no," back up now. Ask if you need guidance. Do nothing else until you have a backup.

  • Help With Choosing The Technology

    Hello,
I need help in choosing the appropriate technology for the application that I'm going to be creating.
The characteristics of the system that have been decided until now:
Standalone app built on either Flex/Flash/AIR
Restricted to using the system on a single computer, hence can be a tightly coupled system
The server component of the system needs to be closed source and robust, for which im thinking something like a Java backend, etc, etc.
In a completely new environment, all that i need to be able to do is install just the AIR application and not worry about installing extra stuff for the server support.
Thanks In Advance for anyone who can help me out with this.

If you are saying you want the server component to be on the same machine as the Flex app, then your choices are severely limited due to the sandbox, unless of course you are using AIR, then you can just use the SQLite database.
But if there will be a sevrer component on another machine on the web, you could use BlazeDS, and like I said, its free and very robust.

  • Help with a new Mac user

    Hi,
New to MAC. Is there a way to do a restore to out of box set up? I also need to find a local group to go to to help learn about the Mac G4. Want to learn more about how to use the software. It is 9.2 os.

derftl, welcome to Apple Discussions & the Mac community.
You can download a PDF copy of your Mac's user manual at this link.
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=50018
I doubt that you will find an OS 9 manual in any computer store. You might find a copy by doing a Google web search, or possibly in a used book store. Also, suggest you join LEM-Swap for buying & selling Mac stuff. http://groups.google.com/group/lemswap
After you join, post a WTB (want to buy). Ask for a book on using OS 9.
