Help in choosing a new laptop.

I am getting ready to go back to school and feel its time to get a new laptop since the majority of my classes will be online. Price is not an issue, I will be using my laptop for class work, watching movies, surfing the web, music, and some work with photos. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks

My thoughts:
I think what xl posted about having a blu ray drive is good advice if you plan to watch movies of all kinds. BUT the only issue here is that the cheapest new computer I saw with a drive from my search was $1,347.I know you said no budget limit but as a former student as well...yeah...
I think you would be better off getting a usb hub/with a usb blu ray drive.
I would probably suggest something like this

or something like this

I need it to be able to do research, write multiple documents and most importantly it needs to be portable and durable.
I am interested in the google chromebook but very hesistant.
    Please help!!

    Hey Taryn,
I understand you want a new laptop to do research, write documents, and browse the internet. Thank you for such great info to start out!! I have a couple questions.
Do you have any brands already in mind? What is your idea price range? And when you say portable, are you talking about a netbook or just a small laptop? I'm looking at laptops that Best Buy sells but answering these questions will really help me start to narrow it down for you!
Also, are you going to need your laptop for anything else other than the basic tasks you already listed??
    Thanks!

  • Help needed choosing a new router

    Hi there,
Our company is in need of a new router for internet traffic. Because I'm having trouble selecting a model, I would like to ask for your help on this one. Our situation is as follows:
     - Primary internet connection is a 60/10 Mbps cable connection.
     - Backup internet connection is an ADSL connection (not normally in use)
     - Currently our old DrayTek Vigor 2910 is incapable of processing more than 25 Mbps.
     - We have approximately 35 users working in our office.
     - Traffic primarily consists of web browsing, e-mail and VOIP phone calls.
When the need arises, we would like to have the option of adding an additional cable connections for more bandwidth.
Additionally, we would like to replace our OpenVPN server with Cisco VPN on this new router, which should handle about 5 users during daytime and 10 outside of office hours.
I have narrowed it down to a 2900-series router because of the flexibility provided by the EHWIC slots. I have found the following models:
    Model
    WAN performance
    Realistic performance
    Cisco 2901
    25 Mbps
    167 Mbps
    Cisco 2911
    35 Mbps
    181 Mbps
    Cisco 2921
    50 Mbps
    246 Mbps
    Cisco 2951
    75 Mbps
    297 Mbps
These performance numbers confuse me as to which model to choose.

  • HELP!!! New laptop and need to connect to internet

I just bought a HP dv6t laptop.  It has all the connections labelled very well but I am having a problem getting connected.
I have a desktop computer as well and I disconnceted the cable from the cablebox/modem and tried to connect it to the port on the right side of my laptop.  It doesn't fit there but it does fit in the networking port on the left side of the laptop.
How do I connect my laptop to the internet?   I have comcast cable, phone and internet.   There is a snall box with no connection except to the TV and other box.  The second box has many connections, one of which connects from the box to the cable wall outlet.  Do I just need a phone connection line?
    HELP!!!!  Please!!!

  • NEED help on choosing a new VGA video CARD for 875pNEO-LRS mobo.

I've purchase a GEforce4 MX440SE 4x/2x 128mb DDR (Taiwain base company made it)...however on their manual & web site..I cant find the voltage info. of it. Thats why I worry that if its not 1.5v 4x AGP card, I will ruin my new mobo.  My first question is that if there is a way that I can test the voltage of it.  I really dont want to wast the money I already spent on it.  However if its my only choice is to buy a different one ... Please post what type of Video CARD you guys are using for this mobo.  Your input will be much appreciate it.

    Hi
I'am using a Sapphire Radeon 9000 Atlantis PRO 128Mb on my mobo, works fine. One thing. Dont't use the drivers on the cd that comes with the card. Get the fresh stuff from ATI's site.

  • Help me choose a new Mac! PLEASE....

I switched to the Macintosh back on Jan. 2nd, 2005 with the original iMac G5. Then I moved to Mac OS X Tiger when it came out and have been obsessed with the Mac operating system ever since. I am one of those people who run Quicksilver and have 15 icons next to there clock.
Currently I have the Intel Core Duo mac mini (1.66GHz) and am happy except... I need hard drive space and dedicated graphics! I do film and fell in love with Motion a few months back but am unable to run it. I want to know if I should stay with the mini, save for a Mac Pro, move to the PowerMac G5, or what ever.
My only objective of moving back to PowerPC is speed and old, and well I use Parallels. What is everyone's opinions?
PS: I have a 20 inch cinema display so any iMac is out of the option. WHY WON'T APPLE MAKE A MAC PRO FOR $1,499!!!!!

Anyone in this situation really needs to consider not just what their needs are at the present time, but also what interests may develop in the period of time the system being bought is likely to remain in active service.
For most people, the question wouldn't be all that critical - web browsing is web browsing, and a bit of Word, email, a library of music in iTunes, a few amateur video projects maybe in iMovie.... those are not really demanding on systems and any Mac capable of supporting those uses is likely to be fine for a few years.
But for users with an interest in the pro-level applications, the chances are that they will be pushing their systems quite hard, and be looking at new versions of the applications and new software titles for specialist uses over time, so unless these potential additional demands are taken into account at the time a purchasing decision is being made, there's a real risk that the system bought will run out of steam rather faster than it runs out of viable life.
In this particular example, it makes no sense at all to buy a G5 system, even though in themselves the G5 power macs are very powerful. Pro-level software into the future will be increasingly designed to make more and more effective use of Intel hardware, so G5 technology will be a limiting factor into the future. That makes the Mac pro the only real option and even if the 20" cinema display wasn't already owned, the expansion options in the Mac Pro make it the obvious choice over and above an iMac or MacBook Pro.
And to the OP.... wait long enough and the first generation of Mac Pros will eventually reach $1,499 in the refurb store. Might take a while though!

  • Need help in choosing the best laptop

I want the best laptop for running Windows Server/Client, Linux/Unix and VMWARE.

I am looking to switch from a desktop to a laptop what would people suggest. I would need something that could handle heavy graphics and a lot of ram.

  • Gurus: please help me choose my new HD Video camera

    Esteemed Video Gurus:
Currently I am an intermediate level Adobe Premiere Pro user. As my video editing projects grow more complex and my skills grow, my 8-year-old SD Video camera is just not acceptable anymore.
I would like to upgrade to my first HD Video Camera. Can anyone suggest a camera based on my needs?
*I need professional grade "starter” HD Video camera (<= $800 dollars)
    * I prefer extra features that I may need as more proficient in the Adobe Creative Suite applications.
*I was a professional photographer (when they used film) so I prefer to have manual control to focus, set exposure, use spot metering, and other settings that are adjustable, rather that auto.
*I primarily shoot inside "green screen" studio videos of subjects using a tripod and lighting. However, I also would like a camera that I can take with me anywhere, that would quickly stat for spur of the moment videos in public.
*I would want enough storage to shoot 2-4 hours of HD video.
*I know that I would like to have a long battery life.
*An Image Stabilizer is important to me.
*I would like to be able to burn blue ray in the future.
    *again I can afford a camera (<= $800 dollars)
Thanks for your time. Any advice is appreciated.
    Respectfully
    Bryan Edmondson

    [Moved to the Lounge.]
    You're asking a lot for $800.
As you were a photographer, and might still have lenses around, you could look into the Panasonic GH2.  New, they went for around $600 to $700 for the body.  But there is a new model out which now runs about $1,200 for the body, so you may have to look into a used one if you don't want to up the price.
The genius of the GH2 is that some Russian figured out how to hack the firmware and adjust things inside the camera.  As a result, and with the right hack, I'd argue that the GH2 can produce an image equal and most often superior to any other camera costing less than $5,000.  (And even for cameras costing more, it can sometimes hold its own.)
So, with the GH2 you have "Professional" grade.  (The following film was shot with the GH2.  http://movies.netflix.com/WiMovie/Upstream_Color/70265224)  You have your manual controls, small enough to take anywhere, OIS available on many lenses, and it produces an excellent Blu-ray image.
The down sides are that the improved image quality definitely eats up storage space.  With what I consider the current best patch, you're looking at maybe two hours recording on a 128 GB card.  However, there are many patches available and quite a few will allow you to reach the desired 4 hour length with image quality still vastly improved over the original.  The other down side is battery life.  You'll need more than one for a full day.  You might get 2 to 3 hours out of a battery, so travel with several.
In your price range, I think that is definitely your best option.  You won't get a better image at that price.  Although you might be able to beat it for a little bit more when the $1,000 Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera comes out in July, though it will likely have it's own issues that may not work for you.  (You'll be hard pressed to get an hour of recording on a 128GB card at best quality.)

  • I need some help in choosing a new router

I need some advice. I need to get a new router that will last. I have had a Belkin Surf and the reason I got rid of it I thought I need a stronger signal as I was getting a new computer and adding 2 internet radios. SO I bought the D-Link DIR 655. WELL, that lasted 2 months. It is now in to be replaced. Have not got it yet. But because of their rotten attitude and horrible so called customer service. I am looking for another router. Below is a list of what I have and what needs to be connected. The room that the router has to service is 27Ft. X 32Ft.
Main computer is a Dell 8300 4 months old with Windows 7 installed
Second computer is a custom computer with Windows XP Pro. This is 5 years old but works great.
2 internet radios, a Logitech Squeezebox and a Squeezebox Boom
Netflex receiver that streams movies to my television
I have a copier, printer and fax machine attached to the Dell computer

Looking at the distance of wireless devices a basic router can work very well in your network, But you also have Audio/Video Streaming Devices in the Network So would Like to Recommend E3000 with Key Features
    Key Features
Enjoy the power of high-performance Wireless-N technology—optimized for wireless entertainment
Connect your computers, gaming consoles, Internet-enabled HDTVs and Blu-Ray players, and other wireless devices at up to 300 Mbps of transfer speeds
Enjoy the benefits of simultaneous dual-band (2.4 GHz and 5 GHz), including smoother HD video streaming, wireless gaming and file transfers
Share your files at home or on the Internet by connecting a storage device to the Linksys E3000's built-in USB port
Stream video and media content via a built-in UPnP AV media server to an Xbox 360, PS3 or other compatible device
Use four Gigabit Ethernet (10/100/1000 Mbps) ports for faster file sharing with other Gigabit-enabled devices, including computers, hard drives, and servers
Set up your wireless network in a few simple steps using included Cisco Connect software
Keep wireless freeloaders and Internet threats at bay with customizable security settings, including WPA/WPA2 Personal and SPI firewall protection
Give visitors password-protected Internet access on a separate network—so your visitors have access to the Internet, but not your computers or data
Use Cisco Connect's Parental Controls to block specific websites and restrict Internet access during certain hours
Customize your network using easily accessible Advanced Settings

  • Help me choose a new printer

I am looking for a multifunction printer with the following features. Other than the Brother machines, I haven't been able to find out for sure whether any of the printers I've researched would fit the bill. I don't want another Brother printer - that's what I'm replacing. I'm partial to Canon printers, having had good experiences, but would consider other brands.
I have three, and sometimes four Macs in the house, all connected via Airport Extreme to the network. I would like these features to be available to all computers on the LAN.
    Ethernet
    Duplex printing
Separate ink tanks for each color
    Print-to-fax over the LAN
    Scan-to-computer over the LAN
    Local copy/fax
I don't care so much about printing pictures directly from a camera - I consider this feature optional.
    Thanks for your suggestions!
    - Chuck

I'm going to butt in with the suggestion that you rethink purchasing an AIO printer. If you perform a quick search on printers (and ignore the first month or two after Leopard was first released) you'll see that the two biggest printer questions involve AIO printers and sharing USB printers. Further, while inkjet printers may be cheaper up front, their consumables are much more expensive and inkjets, unless printed to frequently, tend to clog.
Since networkable color laser printers broke the $300 barrier 2 years ago I began recommending them strongly. Consumer level scanners are inexpensive and seriously, how often do you scan? Anyway, you know best what you need and free advice is worth what you pay.

  • I need help choosing a new Palm phone.

    No device
I'm trying to get a new Palm phone but the HP website has no useful information.  I would appreciate anyone's help with choosing a new phone to replace my Palm Centro. I want to continue using the Palm because it sounds like iphones and other smart phones don't have a way to back up their contents and they all require internet.
Here are some of the qualities I'd like to have:
    1. No internet requirement but able to use wifi.
    2. ptunes or similar mp3 app that syncs with Rhapsody.
    Thanks,
    Mario

Hello mars_d11, I regret to inform you Palm Inc. ceased to exist years ago.
There are no more PalmOS phones in existence. You do have the option of searching for another Centro on the internet...p
