Help in file sharing between 10.4.9 and 10.4.10

I have an iMac, running OS 10.4.9, and a G4 running 10.4.10. I tried to file share between the two, using a crossover cable between the two in the ethernet ports, and also using that cable and a patch cable with a router to try to get either of the two to recognize the other. No luck. I used to connect using the AFP protocol rather easily, but the developers had a brain freeze in eliminating that choice. So I'm wondering why something so easy has become so complicated, and what needs to be done to be able to share the two computers?

Have you tried from the Finder's Go Menu>Connect to Server, then type in afp://ip.of.other.mac ?
File Sharing is for sure on?

  • File sharing between 10.4.3 and 9.1

Because Tiger no longer supports connecting to AFP over the AppleTalk protocol, Apple suggests enabling the TCP/IP protocol on the File Sharing Control Panel in System 9.1.
This doesn't work for me. Since upgrading to Tiger on the 17" PowerBook, connecting to 9.1 on a B/W G3 no longer works. The old Pismo, on the same network, but running Panther, still connects, and to both machines.
Two other customers' networks have the same problem.
    Any suggestions?

I was having the same problem with the G5 not seeing my OS9 Macs. In Mac OS 9.2.2 you need to access the Control Panel, File Sharing, and in there is a check box called "Enable File Sharing Clients to Connect over TCP/IP". System 8 does not offer this.
If the box is selected but grayed out you are missing some needed extensions. Check your Extensions Manager and make sure that these three extensions are turned on:
    File Sharing Extension
    File Sharing Library
    ShareWay IP Personal Bgnd
Then you might also use Get Info for the OS9 hard drives and make sure that sharing is selected for those hard drives you want to see over the network.
It now works for me, I was missing "ShareWay IP Personal Bgnd" but once enabled everything worked.

  • File Sharing between OS 9.2 and OS 0.4 Systems

I have a B&W G3 400Mhz Mac with OS9.2 connected by ethernet to a Dual 1.25 GHz G4 with OS 10.4. Both have file sharing on and the other computer shows up on the network/apple share but neither will connect to the other. System 10.4 says an "incompatable version of AFP" and the OS 9.2 says "the connection to server is unexpectedly broken" when trying to connect as a Guest. Any suggestions?

  • File Sharing between 10.5.8 and Lion?

From my new MacBook Pro, running Lion, I can't connect to my iMac running OS 10.5.8.  I can connect in the opposite direction, but even logged in as the Administrator, I can't transfer files except by using the drop box.  Filing sharing is turned on for both of my Mac's.
    Any advice?  Thanks in advance,
    Racer Ralph

You may need to contact AppleCare with this issue it should be working. Prior to calling though I'd recommend on both the MBP and iMac restarting in Safe Mode to clear some caches and also doing both a SMC and PRAM reset on each machine. Be careful the process for doing a SMC reset on a MBP and an iMac are totally different processes. I've listed each below so please read carefully.
    iMac
    SMC & PRAM Resets
    SMC RESET
    Shut down the computer.
Unplug the computer's power cord and all peripherals.
Press and hold the power button for 5 seconds.
    Release the power button.
    Attach the computers power cable.
Press the power button to turn on the computer.
    PRAM RESET
    Shut down the computer.
Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command, Option, P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously in step 4.
    Turn on the computer.
Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys. You must press this key combination before the gray screen appears.
Hold the keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound for the second time.
    Release the keys.
    MacBook Pro
    SMC Reset
There are a couple of things you can do before heading off to the Apple store, a SMC and PRAM resets. To do these:
    SMC RESET
    Shut down the computer.
Plug in the MagSafe power adapter to a power source, connecting it to the Mac if its not already connected.
On the built-in keyboard, press the (left side) Shift-Control-Option keys and the power button at the same time.
Release all the keys and the power button at the same time.
Press the power button to turn on the computer.

  • How do I set up file sharing between my MacBook Air and IPad?

I'd like to store the files on the MBA and view / edit /use them my iPad and iPhone.

You can set up "iCloud" on all of them and select there to sync your Documents.  You must be running Mountain Lion on the MBA and iOS 6 on the iPhone and iPad in order to use iCloud:

  • File Sharing between macbook pro and imac

    Hello,
I'm having trouble with file sharing between my bankbook pro and my new iMac. I want to share some photos on my iPhoto library from my macbook pro and transfer them to my iMac. I've turned on file sharing and tried connecting, entered in my username and password, but it won't connect. I've tried several times with the correct username and password combination, and the box just shakes and denies entry. I've even tried connecting as a guest user and it says "access is denied, contact system administrator." Can anyone help? I've upgraded to Yosemite on both computers.
    Thanks in advance.

I've done everything that you've recommended, however, I am still having trouble sharing files between my macbook and iMac. I even tried using airdrop to transfer files, but nothing seems to be working. I've made sure the firewall options are what they're supposed to be and everything. Whenever I try to login as administrator to file share, it won't accept my password. I don't know why airdrop isn't working either.

I am succesfully able to share files from the old mac to the new one, as I can connect via the macbook,  but when I try and connect from the new Mac it "fails".   Everything is set up in System Preferences ok (I think) and I have restarted both macs, but still not conecting via the new mac. Any ideas on why this is happening?

  • Air Drop and File Sharing Between Macs Please HELP

I have a 2011 Mac Book Pro running Mavericks and a 2010 Mac Pro running mountain lion and I am having trouble air Dropping and file sharing between them.
My MBP works fine. It can see other macs and share with them on my home network. My MP on the other hand cant see any other computers under the shared devices location in my finder. I have turned on file sharing for my MP as well as screen sharing. Neither works. My Mp used to be able to Air Drop and File share.
When I try to Air Drop to my MP it wont receive the item.
Has someone been through this before and know how to fix the issue? Ive been trying to research this for a while and haven't been able to find a solution.
    Any help would be great!
    Thanks

  • Windows 8.1 ICS with file sharing between computers

Can someone help me get ICS working with file sharing between two computers (directly connected), without enabling file sharing on the internet network (on a public untrusted network)?  Is this possible?  I have set up ICS between two Windows 8.1
machines, but i can only get file sharing to work in one direction (from machine B to machine A)... UNLESS I turn on file sharing/discovery with the entire network from machine A (which i do not want to do).  I am not sure this exact question has been
asked, so my apologies if it has.
    Here is my configuration.
Machine A: win 8.1 (up to date), two NICs:  a wireless card (connected to internet) and a gigabit NIC (connected to machine B)
Machine B: win 8.1 (up to date), one NIC, a gigabit card connected to machine A
    What i did:
On Machine A:  I enabled ICS on machine A's wireless card, which automatically assigned the IP address 192.168.137.1 to the second NIC
On Machine B:DHCP was enabled so it automatically got an ip address (192.168.137.62), internet sharing works fine (i can open a browser, get email, etc.)
On Machine B: I enabled "Find devices and content" on the network device
On Machine A: Going into "view network settings" it lists my wireless network and the gigabit NIC.  The wireless under 'Wi-Fi' says 'Connected', and i can click on this and I have the option to turn on "Find devices and content".
On the wifi connection, i leave 'Find devices and content' turned OFF (so i don't discover computers on the wireless network, which is a public network).  My gigabit NIC shows up as "unidentified network"/"Limited".
When i click on the gigabit NIC, it does NOT give me an option to turn on "Find devices and content", it just shows some properties of the NIC (manufacturer, description, driver, mac address) and button that says "Copy".  On
the gigabit connection's properties (which is listed as "unidentified network/limited"), the option for 'Find devices and content' is missing.
On Machine A: I open a file browser and type '\\192.168.137.62' and it works correctly, i can see the computer and move files around.
On Machine B: It doesn't work.  I open a file browser and type in "\\192.168.137.1", and nothing happens.
If i enable 'Find devices and content' on machine A's wifi connection, everything works, but now everyone on the public network can see my computer.
Question:  How can i enable file sharing between machine A and machine B ONLY?
Thanks for any help you can provide.

The whole point of public networks is that they are unsafe, so file sharing is not permitted for your protection.
If you have a network which you know is safe, the way to get file sharing working is to change your security policy so that it is set to private, not public. You do this from the local security policy (on the ICS computer).

  • File Sharing between Windows PC and MacBook Pro using Internet Sharing

I have a MacBook Pro and a Dell Latitude D820 running Windows XP SP2 and I want to connect both using any of these two options. I do not have a wireless router and I use Sprint 3G data card to access internet.
    1) I access the internet using a EVDO data card on my MAC and use Internet sharing to access the internet on my Dell laptop. How do I access the files on my PC from my MAC?
    2) I can have two EVDO data cards to access the MAC and PC independently. How can I setup file sharing between Windows laptop and MAC?

  • Any issues with file sharing between Windows and latest Mac client?

We're running Lync 2013. My Windows client is 15.0.4551.1005. Mac client is version 14.0.8.
I open a conversation with a coworker on his Mac. I then try to share a png file. He clicks accept but then my client says the attempt timed out, and his client says that I canceled the file transfer. The coworker then boots the Mac into Windows and we try
again, and the file share works fine. When I jump on my Mac, I can send files to his Mac without issue. When he tries to send from his Mac to my PC it fails, but when he tries to send from Windows on his Mac to my PC, it works.
I can't find anything specific in the logs that would indicate a firewall issue. Is there a bug with file sharing between the Mac and PC clients?
    Thanks,
    Matt

No, There isn't a bug with file sharing between Mac and Pc client.

  • Wireless file sharing between two MacBooks

I feel like this is kind of a silly question, but here goes:
Is it possible to set up wireless file sharing between two macs when there is no wireless network available.
For example, if I am on a plane (with no wi-fi) and wan to wirelessely connect to my partners macbook to browse his hard drive, can I do it? Right now, I use a firewire cable when flying, but would love to not have to.
    Thanks for the help.

    Yes, it's possible to do.
You setup one of the Macs to act as a base station of sorts. If you've got the AirPort Status menu shown you can just use the 'Create Network…' option in that menu to create a new wireless network hosted on this Mac. Just tell the other Mac to connect to that network using the name and security credentials you specified when you created the network, and you're done.

  • File sharing between iMac Leopard and Vista Laptop!

ok this is my thing, i have an imac (leopard) that is connected wirelesslly and a laptop (vista home premium) that is also connected wirelessly to the same network. im trying to share files between the both so i don't have to use a hard drive every time i want to transfer files from one to the other. what is the process of setting this type of file sharing between the two machines? all wirelessly of course!

Because the iMac and XP are talking, it sound like a Vista sharing thing and the only other help I can offer is to look at these Google Search's:

  • Each App its files only... no files shared between Apps

Subject: each App its files only... no files shared between Apps in some space in device like Android
with iPad 3 or (future) iPad 4 I have the ability add files to device (eg PDFs) and with any pdf app choose that files (or for each App....I must upload to device its particular pdf files used only by this App?)?

It will likely always remain this way. The 'sandbox' nature of the iDevices is what renders them more virus resistent than other devices. They have no over all 'my computer' or 'finder' upper level file management system, so any malware or virus that gets on the device can be contained. Since files can only move from app to app with your direction, malicious software can't propogate itself and spread without you helping it to spread.
There are many apps that support the 'send to' feature that allows you to move documents between apps. And there are also some apps like ReaddleDocs that can serve as an intermediary between other apps, but the prospect of an overall 'whole system file manager' is unlikely.
