Help in locating a stolen refurbished iPad

Question

My mother received a Apple Certified Refurbished iPad as a gift 4 months ago.  She is old and uses the iPad for card games so the iPad was never registered. She doesn't even have an iTune account.  Anyway, 2 days ago, while at work, 3 teenagers came into the store where she worked and stole the iPad right under her nose.  I tried to help her by first locating her iPad box which has the serial number of the iPad.  Unfortuantely, when I logged into Apple and typed the serial number, it said that it is already registered to another Apple user. I guess thieves work pretty fast.  How can I get Apple to tell me who has registered the iPad?
