Help in moving iMovie Event Library to an external HD

I'm trying to move everything from my iMovie '11 library from my computer to my External HD. I have managed to move all my projects by holding down the command key and dragging them to the external HD icon but that process doesn't work on the EVENT library. How is this done?

If it's the same as iMovie09 - I did it like this:
From inside the events browser in iMovie, select the disc icon along the edge - to make sure you can see events sorted by drive.  Command-click on the events you want to move (you have to click on the event name - not the group), release the command button and drag the files to the new drive - then press the command button again before releasing the mouse button.
Hope this works.

  • Copying or moving video from your Event Library to an external hard disk

I have a Network Drive where I'm used to putted all my iMovie08 files.
I'm start using iMovie09 and i'm no longer able to have my *files/library in a network drive*. Did apple remove this functionality? If this is true this is unbelievable because now a days everything goes to network storage. On iTunes i can have my library virtually anywhere. I need to have the same behavior when i'm using iMovie.
    Can someone help me?
    with my best regards,

Copying or moving video from your Event Library to an external hard disk
If you want to save space on your computer’s hard disk, you can move your stored video in your Event Library to a compatible external hard disk connected to your computer with a FireWire or USB 2.0 cable.
You can also copy Events to another hard disk. You might do this, for example, if you want to create a duplicate copy of your video library or an Event on a friend’s hard disk.
NOTE:When using an external hard disk with iMovie, make sure it has been formatted as Mac OS Extended (Journaled).

    - If i understood correctly, the solution you propose will replace completely my hard disk library with NAS location.
    - What i need (because when i'm travelling i dont have my NAS) is to have both. My hard disk library and the ability to copy/move (drag & drop within iMovies09 ) events and projects to my NAS at my description as i use to do on iMovies08.
And yes all my NAS locations appears with and yellow flag on iMovies09.

  • How do i import my iMovie event library to FCPX when the iMovie library is NOT in the home folder.

    my situation:
my MBP is running two drives:  a 160gb SSD that has my home folder, OS and all apps, and a 500gb HDD for data and non-essential software.
the HDD used to be my OS and home folder, so I used to run iMovie off it.  but after installing the SSD, i am now running Lion off it, and it is now my new home folder.
so my iMovie events are now marooned on my ex-home folder, on what is now my HDD data drive.
I can import iMovie events no problem, as FCPX prompts for where the project files are.  but FCPX doesn't prompt for the location of the iMovie events library, so how do i get those old iMovie events in?
i suppose i could copy all the events over to my SSD, then do the import, and then delete them.  but that would take up a lot of space, and id rather not be copying and deleting so much data on the SSD.
    is there any other way?

It is definitely to your advantage to use the FCP command to Import your iMovie Events all at once. The reason is you will not double up on space. FCP will create a hard lingk to your events so you can access them in FCP without altering the iMovie Event in any way, but without doubling the space.
So there are several ways you could approach this.
    1) If you are not using iMovie anymore, you could simply move them to the iMovie Event folder at the top level of either your old drive, or any attached drive that is formatted correctly (Mac OS Extended (journaled). This would likely break any iMovie Projects that you currently have, so it is not recommended if you will continue to use iMovie.
    2) If iMovie is still working, you can use iMovie to move the Events to a proper drive. Click VIEW/EVENTS BY DISK in iMovie, and Command-Drag in iMovie to Movie Events to the drive you want while maintaining your project links. This option is probably only available to you if you have set up your old drive as your official Home directory.
    3) As long as you set your "old" drive to be your Home Folder in OSX, you can just leave them where they are. OSX lets you have the Home folder on a different drive than your startup drive. This is not ususally recommended, but it is useful when you have an SSD. When I got my current Mac with an SSD, I moved my home folder to the internal hard drive but OSX and my Apps are on the SSD.
To do this, I followed the advice of longtime poster Pondini, who has a great website that walks you through this.
    Here is a link.

  • How do I move Iphoto videos to iMovie event library?

I have this huge English project and my Photobooth videos which I have put in Iphoto won't move into my IMovie event library! I put a background in the Photobooth video. Does that make the video invalid for Imovie videos? HELP!

    Hi welcolme
You may get a better response posting this under iLife iMovie section
A PhotoBooth movie can be dragged by it's thumbnail image from the bottom of the PhotoBooth window out of PhotoBooth on to the Desktop and then can be dragged into an Event in iMovie's Event Library. Or you can drag it directly into the iMovie Event Library if you do not want a copy on the Desktop

  • Help! my imovie project library is full of temporary folders.. some are the ones i deleted.. i tried deleting the folders one by one but when i try to open the imovie, the folders keep coming back to my project library..

help! my imovie project library is full of temporary folders.. some are the ones i deleted.. i tried deleting the folders one by one but when i try to open the imovie, the folders keep coming back to my project library..

If it was working on 10/1, why not open up the most recent backup library with a timestamp of that day. Unless you specified otherwise, your backup folder is in Movies in your home folder. You can double-click one to open it in FCP.
The update command actually wants a mounted drive selected.
I suggest not going into the library bundles and moving or modifying folders/files except as a last resort. It sounds like both libraries are corrupted.

  • Can I or how can I move my "Project Library" and "Event Library" to an external hard drive and work from there?

I am running low on hard drive space and would like to move my imovie "Project Library" and "Event Library" to an external hard drive.   I cannot figure out how to find these libraries on my hard drive to move them.    How do I tell iMovie to look to the external hard drive to find them?

You need to do all moves from within iMovie so you do not break the links between your projects and your events.
First you need an external drvie that is formatted as Mac OS Extended (journaled). FAT32 drives will not work, but can be reformatted using Disk Utility.
In iMovie, click VIEW/EVENTS BY DISK.
In the Project Library you should see all properly formatted disks as well as your current projects. Hold down the Command Key as you drag the small icon for the project to the small icon for the external drive in the Project Library List. Repeat for all projects.
Now do the same for the Events. Command-Drag the small icon for the Event to the small icon for the external drive in the Event Library List.
Note: If you drag, rather than Command-Drag, you will Copy rather than Move.

  • I moved my iTunes library to an external hard drive. It re installed itself on the PC and there is now no more room. I cannot sync with the external version. My wife has is a user on the same computer and we have the same iTunes account. Can I uninstall

I moved my iTunes library to an external hard drive due to lack of space on the PC. I uninstalled it from the PC at the time to increase space. My wife is a user on the computer and shares the same apple account. I discovered that iTunes was back on the PC hard drive when I tried to sync my iphone and it would not for lack of space on the PC. If I uninstall I tunes from the PC where I am the user will it affect my wife's itune account which is still on the PC?

Close iTunes. Click the icon to start it, then press and hold down the left shift key. Keep holding until asked to choose or create a library. Choose the iTunes folder on your external drive. That should bring back all your playlists, ratings, play counts etc. You may have to settle for removing and reloading the media onto the device again. That's not too bad, but what you don't want to have happen is your apps being removed and reloaded as then you can lose settings and data. If that looks likely backup and then restore the device rather than sync it.
If for some reason rebuilding the library the way you did has moved files around then the restored library may have trouble finding things. If so post back and I'll explain what to do...

  • I moved my itunes library to an external hard drive and now when I try to sync my ipad it says it is already synced to another library.

I moved my itunes library to an external hard drive and then I tried to sync my ipad.  I got a message that says my ipad is synced to another library and it will erase my ipad, which I don't want to do.   I'm not sure how to fix this problem, any ideas?

    Ok. progress...
So is your media folder called iTunes Music or iTunes Media? And does it have a folder called Music inside it?
Before going any further you should first attempt to use File > Library > Organize Library > Rearrange files in the folder "<Media Folder>" (ignore if grayed out). This will make sure that any iPod Games or Mobile Applications get placed inside the iTunes Media folder which is needed for portability.
If your iTunes Media folder is called iTunes Music, close iTunes, rename the folder as iTunes Media and start iTunes again. iTunes will automatically adjust. Close iTunes again.
On your external drive rearrange the folders that you have already copied there so that they match the layout in your active library. You should end up with a folder called X:\iTunes where X: is the external drive letter, and the media folder is X:\iTunes\iTunes Media. If the library layout was upgraded then you will need to create a Music folder inside this and move all the artist folders and Compilations into Music. You will also need to copy iPod Games and Mobile Applications from your internal drive into the new media folder. Next copy the files iTunes Library.itl, iTunes Library Extras.itdb, iTunes Library Genius.itdb, sentinel and the folder Album Artwork from the internal drive into X:\iTunes. The preceding manipulations should make the internal and external copies of your library match without you having to copy all of the media over again.
Now hold shift as you start iTunes. Click choose, browse to and open X:\iTunes\iTunes Library.itl.
Finally use File > Library > Organize Library > Consolidate files. This will ensure that any stray files that might have been added from outside your original media folder will be copied into the new one.
You can now reclaim the space used by your library on the internal drive, however before you do so I would advise you to obtain another external drive and make use of this backup tip.

  • Moving the iTunes library to an external drive

I followed the Apple article and successfully moved my iTunes library to an external drive. BUT, is the Album Artwork supposed to stay in the original location (internal drive)? Mine did, and I had to redownload album artwork again. HOWEVER, I don't have all my artwork since the transfer and since the redownloading of it.
Is it safe to drag the album artwork folder to the external? I don't want to mess anything up.
    Thanks.

which article (post a link) did you follow and what exactly did you move to the external ?

  • I moved my iPhoto library to a external hard drive to free up space on my iMac per instructions, but the library is still on my iMac so I don't have much room left.  How do I get rid of the all the contents of my library on my iMac so just on backup drive

As per Apple instructions, I moved my iPhoto library to an external hard drive so that I could free up space on my full iMac.  However, I was not told the last step in the process -- How do I get the iPhoto library off my iMac so I free up that memory?

And after deleting the old Library, you should start up iPhoto while holding down the Option key in order to force iPhoto to let you select your iPhoto Library that is on your external hard drive.  If you start up iPhoto the usual way, it will just create a new, blank iPhoto Library in your /users/yourusername/Pictures folder on your iMac's internal hard drive.

  • Moving a music library from one external hard drive  / disk to another

My music library is already on an external hard drive and I want to move it to another external hard drive (along with the music filkes). I have follwed the standard setps of chaning the itunes folder location, keeping my itunes folder organised etc. When I come to consolidate my library it doesnt find anything or copy anything accross? Is it just looking on my MAC drive do you think? How can I get it to look on my 1st external hard disk?
Getting fed up with this now - must be the 4th time I've had to move libraries from one machine / disk to another and each time I always end up having to re rate music, or have lots of duplicates etc.

  • Final Cut X Crashes every time I try to import imovie event library.  Help?

Like it says in the title.

I had problems getting it to accept .dv files from imovie. I batch converted all of them with MPEG Streamclip to .mov files. That helped.

  • Imovie event library

Hey Apple users out there. Years ago I started out with a Steve Wozniac signed Apple IIGS. Switched to PCs due to software and finally am back in the Apple fold. I am learning with the imovie after using Ulead for a while. When I do a project, then close it, it does not appear in the 'event library' window upon opening imovie. According to the 'help' window I need to have it in the event library to merge 2 projects. None of my projects appear there. I can view it in the project library. I want to merge 2 finished projects into one for burning a DVD. What am I missing here? Thanks, and I'll probably be back with more questions later.

Think of the Event Library as the place to store your raw footage from the camera. It usually makes sense to break it up into Events (like iPhoto) so you might have one Event for a football game, another event for a birthday party, another event for a vacation cruise. This is the raw footage.
A Project is basically a text file that specifies which frames from your raw footage are to be used in the final product. All the data is still physically in the event. The project says "Grab frames 35 through 166 from clip 1. Insert a transition. And grab frames 56 through 800 from clip 2" (for example). It also allows you to specify titles and where they go, music, and where it starts, color correction, etc. All of this in in a text file that is used in conjunction with the Event footage when you render (SHARE) the project. When you SHARE the project, the set of instructions in the project file is executed and an output file is created.
A project might use footage from a single event. Or it might use footage from 20 events. It is totally up to you. I did a project that showed footage of my daughter's birthdays at age 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 8, 15, 16, 17, and 18 and gave it to her as a present for her 19th birthday. So, I had one project using many events.
    Hope that helps.

  • IMovie: Event Library Disappears and Projects are Not Editable...

Was in the middle of editing an iMovie project when it froze.
Restarted the application and now there is no list under Project Library, and I can't click on the Event Library.
I can see that the video is still there because it plays when I hit the spacebar but I can't edit any video components or export it.
Have tried restarting, installing updates, etc but no luck.

Delete (trash) iMovie's preference file. First, close iMovie then in Finder go to your user (home) folder Library>Preferences and locate the file named "com.apple.iMovie8.plist". Drag this file to the Trash. When next opened, iMovie will create a new preference file with the default settings.
You may need to change some settings to suit your own preference. To do this, in iMovie go to the menu item iMove>Preferences and if desired change any settings under each of the 4 tabs.
