Help Installing JRE, Locked Folder?

I am trying to install JRE on a brand new computer I just built. It has WinXP SP2 Media Center Edition installed as the OS. I am using Firefox for a browser... Everytime I go to install, web based and locally from the downloaded installer I get the same error message everytime at the end of the installation.
JRE could not be installed in to the folder because it is locked. Please unlock the folder or close the application that is using it.
I've tried everything I can think of, I can't think of any apps that I have running that would be causing a conflict... esspecially since I have tried my own install paths on different drives. Can someone please help me with this? Thanks!

This search appears to suggest that there's a problem with the .dll's in your machine. You might try doing a check of the system files.

  • Fresh install leaves locked folder at top level (Mac OS X Install Data)

I jsut did a fresh install.  wanted to use my SL DVD but the MBP i5 refused to star with it so I used the original DVD (10.5) and upgraded with the SL DVD to 10.6.  However after the initial SL Installation, it tried from the SL DVD and this failed.  I did a manual restart, starting from the HD and everything ran fine.  however today I note there is a locked file on the HD named Mac OS X Install Data.  It contains 181 .pkg files.
Now I suppose this should have been moved or deleted as part of the install process.
Does anybody have an idea if this is indeed a install failure?  Can I move them to a file where they belong?  Could it be my install DVD is funked? Or any other suggestions?

Remains the quesion if one can remove the aformentioned folder.
I believe the folder is part of the 'preinstall' for Snow Leopard -- it should contain items the installer creates on the hard drive before the Mac automatically restarts from the DVD to complete the installation. It should only contain items referenced by the installer & should have been deleted at the end of a successful install.
Without knowing exactly what you installed over what (still not quite sure about that) I can only guess, but if everything is running fine, there should be no issues if you remove it.
Alternately, you could just run the installer again, making sure you used the one that came with that MBP.

  • Help Installing JRE in windows XP

I have been unable to install. Everytime I try I get the folliwing error message: "J2re_1_4_1_01-windows-i586.exe-Application Error
The application failed to initialize properly (0xc0000005). Click on ok to terminate application." I am logged in as administrator and I have tried installing an older version but to no avail.....Please help!!! TIA......

    http://java.sun.com/getjava/installer.html
I'm sure you did this, but did you make sure any temp files were deleted; any prior (and possibly partial) installs are removed; you re-downloaded and tried a reinstall from that after cleanup.
    Did you try the auto-installer?
Do you have a registry cleanup program, or can you manually edit your registry and make sure there aren't any broken keys?
I have a Sony Viao running XP prof, and didn't have a problem, but those are the things I'd try first...
Also, I'll send you a link to a thread that talks about other XP install problems.
    Luck to you

  • File sharing problem with a PC . locked Folder Icons and funny things

Help was running Tiger fine then upgraded to leopard now my Macbook pro wont shut down properly unless i disconnect all the external USB devices that are attached.
I also used to be able to write to my shared folder on my Windows PC, this comes up on my mac Book pro now with a locked disk icon on it and i cant save to it. the folders inside it also start changing there icon appearance at will. and some times when i try to save a file to it it keeps telling me the file name is too long even if i change it to only one or two characters .
would not mind too much but this is my business thats being effected by this . I have tried it on 2 Imac
Dual core flat panel machine's which still run in tiger and everything is fine with both of these so i know its Leopard that has caused these faults. anyone with any help please let me know .
    ian

*Same problem* here: MacBook on Tiger was fine, after installing Leo, unable to write on shared pc-folders (lock-icon).
    There are 2 work-arounds I found:
    1. uncheck the "protected" box in the info-panel (Mac) of a locked folder,
    2. if the pc-folder had a custom icon, resetting to standard will unlock the write protection as well. In both cases, the folders on the pc will change their icons... I have to agree that this is a Leopard issue.
As I use the Mac for work and often have to exchange docs from and to pc's this "bug" is annoying me.

  • Cannot install JRE 1.6u7

    Hello,
I recently formatted my hard drive and after reinstalling Windows XP SP2, I am having problems installing JRE on my system.
    These are two different types:
    1. When I double-click the offline installation file [version 6 update 7, newly downloaded], nothing happens. The process shows up in the task manager for a few seconds, and then disappears completely. No further procedure takes place.
    2. I observed that doing the above mentioned step leaves the installation MSI file at the location "C:\Documents and Settings\<user>\Application Data\Sun\Java\jre1.6.0_07\jre1.6.0_07.msi". If I double-click on this particular file, the installation starts without problem, but gives an error at the end.
The error is: "bin\java-rmi.exe: Old File not found. However, a file of the same name was found. No update done since file contents do not match."
After that, the installation gets canceled and it then it gives another error message - this one about the MSI package - Error 1722 to be precise.
"Error 1722.There is a problem with this Windows Installer package. A program run as part of the setup did not finish as expected. Contact your support personnel or package vendor."
Then it does the revert back procedure, which actually doesn't revert anything. All files created remain on the hard drive.
The log file at "C:\Documents and Settings\<user>\Local Settings\Temp\MSI30af4.LOG" mentions the following:
"Error 1722.There is a problem with this Windows Installer package. A program run as part of the setup did not finish as expected. Contact your support personnel or package vendor. Action patchjre, location: C:\Program Files\Common Files\Java\Update\Base Images\jre1.6.0.b105\patch-jre1.6.0_07.b06\patchjre.exe, command: -s "C:\Program Files\Java\jre1.6.0_07\"
    === Logging stopped: 7/15/2008 23:07:43 ==="
I went to java.com and tried the various solutions mentioned there, but none of them seem to work. I even tried to install an older version of JRE, but with the same result.
I sincerely hope you can help me troubleshoot the problem.
    Thanks in advance,
    Levi Smith.

The first time I tried to install, it was on a freshly formatted hard drive and a freshly installed OS. So there was no such directory present. After that, however, I tried the installation after removing all the previously created files, cleaning the registry, etc. So again that directory was not present by my reckoning.
Oh, and I also tried to install in a different folder - C:\Java or D:\Java, etc. but with same result.
Do you need any more details to solve this mystery?

  • Installed jre and jdk and setup environment  variable

installed jre and jdk and setup environment variable but still i am not able to rum program?
    cannot find symbol class string
    package system does not exist

if removing 1 jre will help your disk space problems
then you urgently need a bigger disk.
Btw i never notice Java installing 2 different JRE's
so i dont think it will harm remvong one, make sure
you dont delete one you are using :)I assume that you don't run MS os; that's the only one that installs 2 JRE's.
To OP: This has been discussed by Sun, but no changes have been announced. Maybe the relocation in version 1.5 of the private (aka developer) code to the Program Folder is a start of this change?

  • Install JRE silently

I'm installing JRE on my network workstations with these parameters :
    /s /v"/qn IEXPLORER=1 ADDLOCAL=ALL UPDATE=1 /L C:\jre.log JAVAUPDATE=0 REBOOT=Suppress"
under the administrator account remotely , the progress is finished successfully due to the log file and the add/remove programs applet in "Control Panel" , but when another user logs in and browse a page with java applets , the install screen apears and asks the user to install the java runtime environment again ! Of course this time there is only modify or remove items are available in the installation dialog . How can I finalize the installation and prevent the install dialog in the next user login ?

We've had many kicks at silent installation of JRE (we're a LanDesk shop), and if it occurs during a user session with an open browser, it can completely mess up the installation. I've submitted a bug report on this already (1669879).
Inside the %PROGRAMFILES%\Java\JRE6\bin folder is the Microsoft Runtime Library file MSVCR71.DLL that gets locked if a browser is open. During installation, the older JRE6 version is removed (unless it was installed with the STATIC switch) except for MSVCR71.DLL. Then the silent installation begins, with the core.zip expanding in alphabetical order until it comes to the letter m where it finds MSVCR71.DLL and just stops (in a non-silent mode, the user would be thrown a dialog to quit the browser / jqs, etc.). No roll back, no repair, etc. So now your left with some residual files, some reg entries but no control panel, no entry in the ADD/Remove Programs list (ARP), no regsvr32 registration has occurred.
MSVCR71.DLL See (MS KB326922) is distributed with an app when the application was developed with Microsoft Visual C++ .NET 2003. This file doesn't change (unless the Visual Studio gets upgraded) as JRE6 updates get incremented. A solution for the developer might be to skip this .dll if it is encountered during expansion of the core.zip file. Or how about an .msp file instead of full blown installers?
Using Group policy in a networked environment to push JRE will work if done correctly (using software installation or computer startup script).

The error was reportet by "Wow64 Emulation Layer"
this behavior we face since jre-7u45.

  • J2sdk-1_4_2_04-windows-i586-p.exe didn't install JRE correctly.

I realize that j2sdk-1_4_2_04-windows-i586-p.exe didnt install JRE probably.
Server folder which is used for Java HotSpot Server VM was not found in C:\Program Files\Java\j2re1.4.2_04\bin.
Hence, i need to manually copy the folder D:\j2sdk1.4.2_04\jre\bin\server to JRE location.
I was wondering is this the correct way to do so? anyone of u have encounter this problem before?
    thank you.
    regards
    yancheng

If a previous version of the JRE is installed, remove the previous JRE and install the j2sdk 1.4.2_04 JRE.

  • Want a code to check & install JRE automaticallly without user intervention

    hi
I am trying to run an applet on a machine that is not having JRE on it.
want a code that will check for such condition and install JRE automatically.
If JRE is already present then it should check for required version and enable it also.
    please help in this regard.
    thanks in advance
    Santosh.

The ability to detect the jre at the update level, as well as the ability to install a specific version are only present if the DT plugins are installed.
These plugins only exist for windows and are only part of the 6u10 (1.6.0_10) versions of java.
The javascript you show uses an undefined minimumVersion variable.
also note, you cannot use the wildcard '1.5.0*' in the call to isWebStartInstalled (which takes minimumVersion arg)
if fixed, this code would still not work as you want, since clients with 1.6.0 or later would sail straight thru and launch.
    I suggest replacing isWebStartInstalled() with deployJava.versionCheck('1.5.0*') .
then on systems with the plugin installed, if no 1.5.0* version is installed, the latest 1.5.0_XX will be installed before launching the app.
(assuming the app has also <j2se version=1.5/> or equiv.)
on systems w/o plugins installed, the latest version of java will be installed, and it will be up to javaws auto download to get 1.5.0* version.
this could still have problems, especially on platforms not supporting the plugins (non-windows) , since code keeps checking for '1.5.0*', and installing only latest, so you would want to wrap install with something to prevent repeated attempts to install:
    if (deployJava.versionCheck('1.6.0+') && !deployJava.isPluginInstalled()) {
    ---- don't do any install here - ---

  • I don't have a locked folder to unlock it

    Hello,
My ipod classic 3 generation this morning was on lock, which it has never been since I got it. So I went online and found a way to unlock it. But unfortunately the only way to unlock it is to have a "locked" folder on my ipod which I do not have. How am I suppose to unlock it when the only way to is not there? Please help!!

I have restored my ipod and tried to restart it, but that doesn't seem to work either.
I saw online that you are to make your hidden files known and than you delete the locked folder and than my ipod should unlock, is it a lost cause to get it or do I need to get another ipod?

  • Error installing jre 1.4.0_01

I have installed and installed the sdk and jre version 1.4.0_01. To cleanup my environment I uninstalled all of my java products and began re-installing them. When I tried to install jre 1.4.0_01 (this is the first product that I tried to re-install) I get a message from the installer
"You already have the Java 2 Runtime Environment, SE v1.4.0_01 already installed on this machine...."
I have went thru the registry and deleted any reference to java 1.4.0_01. Any help would be great.
    Thanks.

Yep, i had installed the JDK, but when I found out that the plug-in app was not operating properly in the control panel, I figured something had gone wrong. I uninstalled everything and tried installing just the JRE, when I noticed this error.
I used Iolo's system mechanic to try and clean the registry and run all kinds of analysis and cleaners on my system.
No dice, still have that problem.
I believe I may blow away windows and move to a Linux desktop

  • Locked folder I can't get rid of.

I was burning a data-DVD of some photos when I hit a snag navigating in Finder, and so I control-clicked on Finder and told it to relaunch. But by doing that, it interrupted the DVD burn. Now, I have a folder on my desktop that is called Untitled DVD that is locked, and I can't get rid of it. I can't unlock it either. When I try, Tiger tells me I don't have permission to do that. I tried to move it so it wouldn't be on my desktop, and instead, it just copied it to another folder. So now I have two of these stupid, useless folders.
So, any ideas on how I can get rid of these folders? They're not taking up that much room, but they are annoying.

Delete the locked folder with Terminal (in Applications > Utilities):
    1. Open Terminal window
    2. Type 'sudo rm -rf ' (Not the ' marks, just what is between them. Yes, that is a space on the end. _Do not press enter yet_.)
    3. Drag the offending folder into the terminal window. Its path should be entered after the text you have typed. Click in the Terminal window to switch back into Terminal (from Finder).
    4. Press enter/return.
    5. Type your admin password.
    6. Wait until the prompt appears again (may take some time).
    7. Quit Terminal.
Follow the above instructions *carefully and exactly* (rm -rf is capable of deleting anything).
    Hope this helps...
